This management-systems oriented book is an excellent source of information for college students, beef producers, leaders in the beef industry, and anyone interested in beef cattle. It has three objectives: (1) to identify the primary biological principles that contribute to raising productive beef cattle; (2) to integrate these principles with the economic considerations involved in producing profitable, highly preferred consumer products; and (3) to enhance understanding and communication between all segments of the beef industry. The Third Edition strengthens its emphasis on management and management decisions based on sound biological and economic principles that meet specifications for beef production and improve profitability.

About the Author

Dr. Taylor was raised on a beef cattle ranch in southern Idaho. He was involved in managing this seedstock, commercial cow-calf and backgrounding operation. He also managed Colorado State University's seedstock herd that is used in teaching, research, and extension activities.

Dr. Taylor received his BS and MS degrees at Utah State University and a PhD from Oklahoma State University. He taught courses in beef production and a graduate-level course in beef cattle management decisions. His research focused on beef cattle management systems. His consulting activities in the U.S. and foreign countries involved all phases of the beef production system.

Dr. Taylor received teaching awards from Iowa State University and Colorado State University, in addition to several regional and national teaching awards. He also received the Distinguished Teaching Award from the American Society of Animal Science recognizing his ability to organize and present materials to students. Many of his concepts for effective teaching are included in this book.

Dr. Field was raised on a Colorado cow-calf and seedstock enterprise. He was involved in the management of the family business after completing his BS degree. He received his BS, MS and PhD from Colorado State University.

Dr. Field teaches courses in introductory animal science, beef production, management decisions, and family ranching. He serves as the director of the Beef Industry Leadership Program and conducts beef cattle management research. He works with beef cattle producers and organizations in the U.S. and internationally.

Dr. Field has received teaching awards from USDA, NACTA, ASAS, and Colorado State University.

A GREAT up-to-date text for students or aspiring ranchers!

If you are considering cattle ranching or producing beef in a feedlot this book will be invaluable to you or your students.
I found the inclusion of general management advice to be especially valuable.
The data provided to analyze the income potential of various types of production considerations also is appreciated.
If you can buy only one book regarding beef production, buy BEEF PRODUCTION AND MANAGEMENT DECISIONS. If you can afford a second book, purchase STOREY'S GUIDE TO RAISING BEEF CATTLE.

Ariel Rocked! I loved the concept. The characters were well developed and the storyline was fresh. Ariel is my entry into the paranormal world of shifters. I like it here and plan to write a few more in this series. My love of science fiction might be showing through again in these stories--just a little. I'm a science geek who wants her romantic comedies to have the adventure and excitement that can only be found in a paranormal world.

Not sure what book everyone else read, but the one that showed up in my library was a dud. As a lover of shifter stories and having read other people's reviews, I was really excited to devour this one. I was sorely disappointed. The idea and plot were good, but the writing and narrative lacked the natural rhythm I prefer. It was almost robotic and if the writer hadn't told me who was speaking, I would have never been able to tell since everyone sounded the same and had no unique qualities to their personality or individual voice. I'm amused at how other reviewers noted that the characters were funny, especially the main character. That never came across to me. If the author hadn't constantly told me that people were laughing, snickering, smiling, etc...I would never have known. I never had an emotional reaction to this book because I was constantly being told what someone felt instead of understanding their feelings through good creative writing. I know someone is happy because I'm being told, I know someone is angry because I'm being told, I know someone is in love, because, again, I'm being told. I don't want to be told, I want to be shown and a picture painted for me.

Good character development, storytelling, and writing. The science was told in a way that didn't go overboard, and was smoothly summarized so the scientific reader wasn't offended. (That last is rarely the case for the romances I have read...) The intrigue was interesting. The relationships helped build the story, while also giving the reader lots of happy vibes. The romance was sweet.

This was my first book I read by this author and I was very much impress by this type of book.
The story I love it I like the way the character's grew into there story parts and how they learned from eachother about love, friendship and what it's like to have a family and also most of what loyalties means to them as a family . I can't wait see what in book 2 and how grow more as a family and stand tall for eachother . Thank you for letting me enjoying your story.

Awful.

Not only is this book terribly overpriced, it's not even a book. It's a bunch of super-thin paper that you're supposed to put in a binder for 'ease of use.' A binder is not easy for me to carry back and forth to work-- a book is. Additionally, the definitions of basic terms are so convoluted that it leaves them unrecognisable. Exams in my class based on this book's content are very difficult. While the leadership evaluations are interesting, there are most certainly better OB books out there, and I wish my professor had selected one of those.

Couldn't give me a free binder for the high price?

Book itself is great - Pretty stupid that it is a loose paper and no binding. The paper is even cheap but yet they charge the same price as a regular book. RIP OFF

Good for basic knowledge, bad for focus.

Purchased this book for class. It is a great foundations book for those unfamiliar with OB. It is full of typos which cause me to lose focus often.

An honest, introspective memoir of evolving lesbian motherhood. When Chicana lesbian writer Moraga (coeditor, This Bridge Called My Back, not reviewed) was 40, she decided to have a child. She asked her white lover (who is called Ella here, the Spanish word for ``she'') to help, not so much to be the other mother as to continue to be Moraga's partner and support; inevitably, though, Ella does turn out to be a ``co-mother.'' Moraga asks her much younger Mexican friend Pablo to donate sperm; he too ends up becoming very involved with the baby. Against the odds, Moraga gets pregnant the first time they try. In this memoir, Moraga muses honestly on how she feels about having a boy (at first ambivalent, then pleased). She is also thoughtful on the meaning of blood and family; as a lesbian, she's always created her own ``familia,'' yet she is also quite close to her parents and sister, and it was important to her that her baby's father also be Mexican. Both her sister and Ella are present at Rafael's birth, which is premature, and he fights for his life the first few months. Moraga writes well about the struggle and the exhaustion of daily facing this new loved one's death after months of creating his life. When Rafael is well, Moraga battles to find the energy to write. Her relationship with Ella suffers and Ella moves out, though it seems they may stay together. Some of the writing in this memoir is a bit indulgent, having been culled from journals. However, much of it is powerful, and the journal form does give the narrative a sense of immediacy. making familia from scratch

Moraga's text is a thoughtful meditation on the dialectics of biology and social construction of gender, sexuality, and bodies. She offers very personal reflections on how her choice to bear a child disrupts societal expectations for lesbians and how her choice is also shaped by race & culture. Ultimately, she envisions her child and the ghosts of those who have passed on (her Mexican uncle who died of lung cancer as well as gay male friends who died of AIDS) surrounding him as well as those present as part of a larger community of familia and a future generation that is inclusive of racial-ethnic minorities and sexual minorities. Moraga's trajectory as a writer is fascinating to explore--I would recommend reading The Last Generation before this book, and then reading the new sections from Loving in the War Years afterward. I also would suggest keeping an eye out for Yvonne Yarbro-Bejarano's book on Moraga's work, being published by University of Texas Press.

This is a beautifully written and insightful memoir. Moraga communicates a deep love of self, family and community in this finely crafted volume. I was particularly inspired by the seamless way the recounting of her personal story addressed so many larger political and spiritual issues.(A better case for the honoring of queer famlies could not be made). More than this, however, Moraga is just an exceptionally gifted writer, and this book highlights her luminous talent. One poetic phrase follows another, until the reader is left with one of the most elegant memoirs out there. Read it, and experience a unique glimpse into the heart of her fiercely loving mother's heart.

Essential Reading

The Intelligent Asset Allocator sits right next to 'Stocks for the Long Run' and 'The Intelligent Investor' on my bookshelf; it's a classic.

I enjoy thinking about asset allocation and how to best structure a portfolio. No matter what studies you may trust the most, asset allocation is clearly a major driver of portfolio returns. This book invites you to deconstruct your assumptions and build them back up again. I would have liked a book ten times as long, but then I really enjoy seeing all the intricacies. Even so, there is a lot hinted at in these pages that gives you further directions to explore. Even if you are familiar with diversification, various asset classes, portfolio theory and the reasons for indexing, there is a lot of value here. I will admit the book is growing somewhat dated with respect to the time frame it discusses, but the book loses nothing in relevance.

I am still building assets, and because this book referenced both standard and aggressive growth portfolios (I employ a portfolio very similar to the 'Madonna' Portfolio he mentions, with a couple key differences), I knew I was on the same trail as the author, which was incredibly gratifying for me. For those with different backgrounds, the insights you find relevant may differ.

I will say the book would benefit from a greater discussion of various portfolios. How important is it to mimic the market (or rather, what is the risk associated with failing to look like the market, which is true to some degree of every portfolio?) What is the role of TIPS in a portfolio (or rather, when does Inflation become a central risk? I maintain that you only need them in retirement, but am eager to hear different opinions.) How much risk should you take with the credit portion of your portfolio (I use intermediate term treasuries myself - covariance vs equities is just too superior not to, even with the risk of rising rates. Again, I like to hear other opinions.)

With reference to portfolios I've read about: the 'Gone Fishing Portfolio' was also amazingly comprehensive, if not as focussed on portfolio building as the IAA, and the portfolio it proposes is pretty solid. Swenson's books are very good, and his suggested portfolio is top notch, if history is any judge. Swedroe suggests a pretty bullet-proof portfolio, so even though returns won't blow you out of the water, they should be solid, and the ride should be serene (which can be very important in a retirement portfolio, as lack of volatility both increases SAFEMAX and decreases the odds of running out of money early... i.e. the trade-off for lower returns can yield a higher cash flow.) All of these authors are worth the read.

One of the top 4 books that should be on every saver/investor's book shelf!

I first read this back in the 1990's when Bill Bernstein first published it online in manuscript - and it has been my guide ever since! I consider this to be one of the top 4 books any investor should have ... to be read from cover to cover. While math, statistics and charts are an essential part of this book, don't be scared off by them - they illustrate the very points Bernstein is trying to drive home - and it's all based on historically empirical data, not hypothetical scenarios. Bill is a very good writer and even if you don't "get" the math or statistics, the text is all you really need. (BTW, the other 3 books I recommend are Bernstein's "The Four Pillars of Investing," Benjamin Graham's "The Intelligent Investor" and Jack Bogle's "Common Sense on Mutual Funds.")

For Growing Wealth

I buy this book for intelligent friends who are serious about preserving and growing wealth. It is not suitable for amateur investors who aren't willing to take Bernstein's hand as he walks them through the evidence. Speculators and others who derive entertainment value from "investing" will be immune to Bernstein's knowledge.

It is awesome for professionals and personal investors who want to allocate assets based on sound principles and an awareness of the money management industry's many biases. For the modern investor, this book is more important than anything written by Buffett, Graham, Fisher, etc.

Good for fantasy fans of all ages

Inspired by Welsh mythology, this story is classic Garner: ordinary people pulled from their ordinary lives into a magical and dangerous world. It's intended for children but adults who enjoy fantasy will find it worth their time. It does have the patented Garner sudden ending - no winding down of the story, no hint of what happens to the characters after the climax.

This ranks below "The Weirdstone of Brisinghamen" but well above "Elidor," by the same author.

Creepy Story with Unobvious Ending, Read Effectively

This review is for the audio book on CD version of The Owl Service by Alan Garner.

I'm not going to go over the story here, as too many other reviewers have done so with painstaking (and painful) detail, except to say that the action takes place in Wales in the early to mid 60s, and concerns a population forced to periodically witness the recapitulation of a folk myth that can be found as one of the stories in The Mabinogion (once available as a translation by Penguin Classics), a collection of Welsh mythical stories that predate the written word.

The reading here is excellent, with just the right amount of characterization (aka "doing the voices") to make the story come alive in your headphones. I bought it for my teenager, who ignored it so I played it on my car stereo while she was with me. We only got four chapters done by the time we were finished with our errands, but she was eager for the rest. "Creepy story, Dad".

I first encountered this story as a TV production when I was younger than my kid is now. I read it when I was in my late 20s, and gave a copy to my girlfriend (now my wife) early in our relationship. I still found the reading here to be fresh, intense and riveting, some 25 years later.

You will too. Recommended.

A little background helps a lot

If I recall my Mabinogion correctly, Blodeuwedd was the girl made by a wizard from flowers. She was created in order to be the bride of a prince who had been cursed never to marry mortal woman. She conspired with her lover to murder the prince, and as punishment was turned into an owl.

It is not by accident that the flower pattern on the dinner service can be rearranged to form owls.

This is the root story behind "The Owl Service", and I think it's helpful to know the tale before reading the book, since it adds a bit of clarification that is otherwise lacking. That said, the book is wonderfully atmospheric, and a faithful adaptation of a classic Welsh tale to a modern setting. This has been done well in some children's books, (Nimmo's Magician trilogy and Cooper's Dark is Rising set), but is often less successful in more adult treatments.

If you would like a good, challenging, moody and engrossing tale, this book is well worth trying.

About the Author
Michelle Menard is a freelance writer and game producer. After receiving a double bachelor of arts in Applied Mathematics and Music from Brown University, she decided to jump into the games industry by getting a master's of fine arts in Game Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design. A solid beginner-intermdediate book

This is a very well-written book on Unity game development. It discusses, in detail, virtually every aspect of Unity interface, gives a good review on Unity Javascript and in some cases C# when the differences between these languages merit attention. The entire book centers around the 3rd person character control, which is missing in other books on Unity. I especially liked the natural & logical flow of discussion from the starting level creation phase to the final stages of optimization and publishing. The number of pages is over 460 rather than 350 and appendices are on the accopanying DVD. The DVD also has useful resources and all the project files in the book. The only thing I don't like about this book is that it is based on Unity 2.x version. Thus, like other books so far published no new aspects introduced in Unity version 3.x are found here, either. Still, the material coverd in this book holds in version 3.x, if some minor modifications are made. Overall, this is a well thought-out book and the price is quite reasonable, so I believe you will get your money's worth.

I purchased 3 books from this retailer. 1 of the books did not have the product DVD with the data files for the book.
Very frustrated and would not recommend as the book does not have value with out the DVD and would not have purchased with out DVD.

Worth the time

I'd been using Unity 3d for awhile when I got this book. I picked it up as a quick reference because it had a chapter on a piece of code I was writing and I wanted to see how they suggested doing it. I ended up reading the book cover-to-cover. It told me things about tools I'd been using that increased my efficiency. It went in-depth in to configuration settings I'd never thought to try. If you find the way beginning books skim the in-depth details of a tool annoying, this is a great beginners book for you. If you find that all that detail is annoying, pick this up after you've done a few other tutorials. Either way, pick it up.
