Good reference but forgot about Independent Producers.
By Adam Spade
Great knowledge popper! This book covers practically everything a game producer needs. Pretty layout. I read it straight through. No regrets.

I am an Executive Producer on a small Indie team and only have two complaints;

1. I wish the book catered somewhat to Indie Developers rather than assuming the reader works on a team of 200 with a Mr. Publisher pouring down their necks. That's not me at all. I expected it to be more diverse than that.

2. Lot's of errors. There is a section in the book, "Technical Production" if I remember correct, where the frequency of errors really start to pick up, as if the writer used Apple Voice Recognition instead of an actual editor. That was frustrating to me as it slowed down my reading flow. I don't want to edit the book while I read unless I am being paid. I do believe this section had a different author but ahm... read before you publish. :P

Overall, I recommend this book as it is a great reference and I will keep with me forever or until the next edition. However, I will be looking for a similar book but more suited to my personal needs as an Indie Developer. "Indie Game Development Survival Guide" might be my next try. But don't hesitate to buy this.

Thanks for the book, Heather:)

Fairly useful
By M. A.
This book is a pretty rigid look at game production. It's probably fairly applicable to large corporate game development. I'd view it as useful to a suit coming from another industry to games and needing to know all the paperwork and processes to stick to "to do it by the book".

Generally not applicable to small time, lean, or indie projects I feel. Of course, there is always stuff you can glean from the content regardless of its intended audience.

Great guide to the game dev pipeline
By Harold Jr
This book was required for a graduate class. As with any text book, some texts just have basic information for you to follow along with the instructor. However, this title is a great read for anyone looking to get into the production side of game development. Each chapter contains valuable information along with interviews from people who have worked in the industry. This book covers a project management styles, business and legal information, technical requirements for games, game ratings, and even outsourcing and localization. There is also a DVD that accompanies the book which has examples of budgeting and scheduling. I highly recommend this book for those who lack an understanding of how game production functions.

JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why It Matters, by James W. Douglass

The acclaimed book Oliver Stone called “the best account I have read of this tragedy and its significance,” JFK and the Unspeakable details not just how the conspiracy to assassinate President John F. Kennedy was carried out, but WHY it was done…and why it still matters today.

At the height of the Cold War, JFK risked committing the greatest crime in human history: starting a nuclear war. Horrified by the specter of nuclear annihilation, Kennedy gradually turned away from his long-held Cold Warrior beliefs and toward a policy of lasting peace. But to the military and intelligence agencies in the United States, who were committed to winning the Cold War at any cost, Kennedy’s change of heart was a direct threat to their power and influence. Once these dark “Unspeakable” forces recognized that Kennedy’s interests were in direct opposition to their own, they tagged him as a dangerous traitor, plotted his assassination, and orchestrated the subsequent cover-up.

Douglass takes readers into the Oval Office during the tense days of the Cuban Missile Crisis, along on the strange journey of Lee Harvey Oswald and his shadowy handlers, and to the winding road in Dallas where an ambush awaited the President’s motorcade. As Douglass convincingly documents, at every step along the way these forces of the Unspeakable were present, moving people like pawns on a chessboard to promote a dangerous and deadly agenda.

JFK and the Unspeakable shot up to the top of the bestseller charts when Oliver Stone first brought it to the world’s attention on Bill Maher’s show. Since then, it has been lauded by Mark Lane (author of Rush to Judgment, who calls it “an exciting work with the drama of a first-rate thriller”), John Perkins (author of Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, who proclaims it is “arguably the most important book yet written about an American president), and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., who calls it “a very well-documented and convincing portrait…I urge all Americans to read this book and come to their own conclusions.”

Amazon.com Review
"In JFK and the Unspeakable Jim Douglass has distilled all the best available research into a very well-documented and convincing portrait of President Kennedy's transforming turn to peace, at the cost of his life. Personally, it has made a very big impact on me. After reading it in Dallas, I was moved for the first time to visit Dealey Plaza. I urge all Americans to read this book and come to their own conclusions about why he died and why -- after fifty years -- it still matters.” -- Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

“Right now, I ask all of you—please please, read JFK and the Unspeakable! I cried all night reading it, and didn’t sleep a wink. It is a book that could make us stand up and change the world, right now. Maybe we can save the world before it blows up. Really” —Yoko Ono

Review
“A remarkable story that changed the way I view the world.”—JAMES BRADLEY, author of Flags of Our Fathers

“Arguably the most important book yet written about a U.S. president … Should be required reading for all high school and college students, and anyone who is a registered voter!”—JOHN PERKINS, author of Confessions of an Economic Hitman

“The best account I have read of this tragedy and its significance … But don’t take my word for it. Read this extraordinary book and reach your own conclusions.” —OLIVER STONE, director

"Jim Douglass has unraveled the story of President Kennedy’s astonishing and little-known turn toward peace, and the reasons why members of his own government felt he must be eliminated. This disturbing, enlightening, and ultimately inspiring book should be read by all Americans. It has the power to change our lives and to set us free."—MARTIN SHEEN

“JFK and the Unspeakable is an exceptional achievement. Douglass has made the strongest case so far in the JFK assassination literature as to the Who and the Why of Dallas.”—GERALD McNIGHT, author of Beach of Trust: How the Warren Commission Failed the Nation and Why

“Once in a great while a book comes along that both records history and makes it. … An exciting work with the drama of a first-rate thriller.” —MARK LANE, author of Rush to Judgment

“Right now, I ask all of you—please please, read JFK and the Unspeakable! I cried all night reading it, and didn’t sleep a wink. It is a book that could make us stand up and change the world, right now. Maybe we can save the world before it blows up. Really.” (Yoko Ono)

The Seminal Work of Kennedy Assassination Research.
By J. Roth
The sheer breadth and scope of Kennedy assassination research can be daunting. It’s a subgenre of nonfiction rife with inaccurate, poorly-sourced, and hard-to-access drivel. Even the most touted works (e.g., “Reasonable Doubt,” “Crossfire,” and “Reclaiming History”) are saturated with poor scholarship and misinformation. Yet there is one thread of research — built upon by authors like John Newman (“Oswald and the CIA”), James DiEugenio and Lisa Pease (“The Assassinations”), Jefferson Morley (“Our Man in Mexico”), David Talbot (“Brothers” and “The Devil’s Chessboard”), and Gaeton Fonzi (“The Last Investigation”) — that commands both clarity and credibility. This line of research — which probes Lee Harvey Oswald’s involvement with American counterintelligence — builds upon the work of the 1978 House Select Committee on Assassinations and offers the clearest and most level-headed perspective on the domestic assassinations of the 1960s. Within this body of work, there is no single book that paints a clearer, deeper, and more moving account of the history surrounding the Kennedy assassination than that of James Douglass’ “JFK and the Unspeakable.” It is, bar none, the single most readable, most concise, and most compelling depiction of that dark chapter in history. That’s why most, if not all, of the aforementioned authors regard “Unspeakable” as the seminal Kennedy research book. It’s easy-to-access (even for beginners) and impossible to put down.

Not only the best JFK book I've ever read, but the best book I've read, period!
By Tom L.
Not only the best JFK book I've ever read, but the best book I've read, period! Like author James Bradley wrote on the book cover, it changed the way I view the world. Thoroughly and meticulously researched, it lays out not only JFK's assassination plot, before, during, and after, but his legacy, and the state of our government in a way you won't see anywhere else. I owe a debt of gratitude to Mr. Douglass for opening my eyes. I still can't believe I was so ignorant in regards to our government and politics prior to reading this book. I recommend this to anyone interested in knowing the truth. It will change the way you see the world, unless that is you go into it with a pre-set agenda or bias, and unfortunately there are many people like that. But luckily there are more of us that simply want to know not only what happened and why, but why the government and military act the way they do and create their policies, then and now. By the way, after reading this book you probably won't be that interested in watching the news anymore, if you even were before, or watching political debates; at least that was the case for me, and you'll understand why when you're done with the book.

Depth yet clarity on a complicated subject
By Joey Harper
I first became attached and addicted to this subject after watching the televised showing of the Zapruder film in 1975. I have never lost that interest and addiction to this subject. A part of me always knew it was important far beyond the crime itself and the loss of a President in an awful way.
Over the years I have read numerous books and have tried to answer and assuage that awful emptiness of not fully knowing th truth. It never came until now.
This book has carefully laid out what happened. It dealt with the unspeakable and the why. Yes the why! What other good books have dealt with seems definitively, clearly, and in a correlative way set down here.
For the first time since 1975, I now have a sense of closure concerning a tragic event in our history.
What happened does not bring peace and at best it remains troubling. Yet it is reality.
I recommend the book as required reading. It moved me. It shows us that we have yet to grow and mature as humans in this complicated world and our country of many differences.
It talks of hope despite the unthinkable. It definitely presents reality. Thanks to the author and all those who have tried to resolve and bring closure to this horrific event.
Is there hope? Perhaps...but we collectively must begin with it and aim at what would be best for all and not just a few. Thanks.

Great Book
By Rand
The picture / numbers / steps approach is the only way to go for such visually-based software. The information presented shows an in-depth knowledge of the the inner workings of the software. This should be the first book for the beginning user and a handy reference for the experienced one. The sections on file sharing and using iCloud with GarageBand for iPad are invaluable.

I ACTUALLY have an iPad.
By David G Thelen
*I accidentally ordered Garage Band for MAC, but I don't have on of those.
Garage Band for iPad will teach me A LOT more than I would do on my own.
Garage Band for iPad, anyway is NOTORIOUS for not volenteering information.
The book helps a lot. For example, I couldn't figure out how to make it between the 4 sections, it showed me that.
The book was worth it for that alone! And I'm sure I will learn a lot more too, before I'm done.

Where to start
By Glenn
Ok, best part is the pictures, but still as with all DAW software it seems to leave the beginner without the basics. It starts as if you knew how to perform these recording tasks already.

Review
"Book of the Month . . . all aspects of the ships are covered."  —Ships Monthly

"Highly recommended."  —Voyage

From the Publisher
Sitting around a dining–room table in 1907, the owners of the White Star Line discussed their competition to the newly–built Cunard liners, Lusitania and Mauretania. From that smoke–filled room came the first designs of three White Star superliners. Olympic and Titanic were to be built at Harland & Wolff’s yard in Belfast, while the third ship, Britannic, was to follow after construction had been completed on the first pair of sisters.

Each ship was subtly different. Lessons learned from the service of Olympic were put into practice for Titanic. With the loss, on her maiden voyage, of Titanic, the hull design was radically changed for the third sister ship. The new double hull, however, did not prevent Britannic from sinking in less than an hour in the Aegean after she hit a German mine in 1916.

Illustrated with many rare images of all three vessels, only one of which survived in regular service, this is the definitive history of the most famous sister ships of all time.

Mark Chirnside has researched the history of the White Star Line’s famous sisters for the past decade. He is currently working on a biography of RMS Olympic for Tempus Publishing.

Insightful and comprehensive
By Marc_Florian
A treasure trove of insight, at least to me, on previously unknown angles of the Olympic Class. A definitive work. Must-have for anybody with a more than superficial interest in these Edwardian superliners. Here, again, is a great diversity of text sources, mixing excerpts from personal diaries, information from company records and other resources with some good, solid writing of the author that makes for an engaging reading experience.

Great book
By Russ
I've read a number of books about the Titanic and Britanic. This book places these two ships and the Olympic in their historical perspective. The Olympic served in WWI and even ended her career with grace. She was scrapped to provide jobs for an economically depressed region. I learned a lot about social norms for the period and about competion on the Atlantic runs. It was fact filled, but not boring. I would recommend it.

Very Informative
By metalslinger
Very detailed with wonderful pictures. The book is imformative and usually debunks most of the mythology about the Titanic and the Olympic. A must read for anyone who is interested in the Titanic and wants to know more about the other ships she was built with.

Penguin Atlas of World History
By J. Lindner
This two book set is the same as the old Anchor Atlas of World History though volume 2 has been updated to bring the set more or less to the present. I fell in love with the Anchor Atlas set to the point I wore out my first set so I bought a second set. Then the publisher took the book out of print. It stayed that way until the last couple of years when Penguin took over.

These atlases are perhaps the most comprehensive of any similar books on the market. One or two come close, but I think Penguin's atlas is still the best if you are looking for a brief overview. Critics say the print is too small or the content is not detailedenough. I disagree with both criticisms. I believe a historical atlas should be brief. The intent is to cover an event and depict it in maps. If in depth analysis is wanted, then find a book dedicated to the particular topic.

I bring these books with me whenever I travel and want something to read. In fact, back in high school we had a group assignment of what books we would bring along if we were to be stranded on a desert island. I convinced my group these books were worthy of such a list. With them back in print I can finally discard my first set (the glue binding disintegrated leaving me with single pages. I bought this set to the cabin for casual reading up there. Now I can bring my first replacement set up there.

I just can't say enough good things about these books. I did notice a flaw in a map label in volume 2 that has not been corrected since the initial publication. In a map showing the early United States they label as "Minnesota Territory" those lands which were originally the Wisconsin Territory after Michigan gained statehood. This flaw leads me to wonder about other maps whose labels I'm not as well versed it. But overall I still remain very impressed with this set. Anyone who buys this set for what it is: an introduction to the topics it presents accompanied by detailed maps, will not be disappointed.

History's Bible
By Kochevnik
This and Volume II are reprints of the old Anchor Atlas of World History. I received that edition as a birthday present when I was 10, and it played a huge role in the development of my passion for history. Leaving through the pages year after year wore the old edition out for day to day use(it is still faithfully preserved!), and I was happy to replace it with the reprint.

For the size, portability, and cost, you cannot do any better than this. Yes, the print is tiny, and much of it is basically written in shorthand My dad read through it back in the day and wondered who "Gks" were (the Greeks). The maps are detailed, but stylized, and can definitely use geographic terms in somewhat misleading or cryptic ways.

The book isn't Euro-centric: it's German centric. I suppose this makes sense as, if I recall, it was originally published as a supplement to a German history TV documentary aired in the late 60s. But the upshot is that you *will* know everything you never wanted to know about the Ottonians, the Invesititure crisis, the Hohenstaufens, the Interregnum, the House of Luxemburg, etc. etc.: Germany gets five maps with the same number of pages of text for the High Middle Ages (900-1200) alone. East Asia gets its history from about 200 to 1200 squished into a page. But overall, it is still an excellent reference, with useful dynastic family trees, schematic diagrams, and very detailed overviews of world history topics. The sections on ancient history are simply great as a reference. It is indispensable for the historian.

Pound for pound the best there is...no contest
By Jacques Talbot
I have loved maps and history for longer than I care to admit and I was fortunate enough to have a father who shared these interests and provided a fertile and far-ranging "garden" of books for my edification and enjoyment growing up. One of my favorites was this book. The story skips ahead many years--I decided to look for this book, which had been out of print or at least unavailable for a long time. I found it here on Amazon and ordered it, along with another larger highly touted atlas from another publisher (rated #1 by another reviewer). Much to my delight and surprise, the Penguin atlas has aged quite well (to be expected given the period covered). Its strength lies in the abundance and thoroughness of the map coverage--where other atlases give one map, this one often gives three or more--and in the "extracurricular" material such as diagrams illustrating governmental organization. Incidentally, I was sorely disappointed in the other atlas, which cost far more and sported foolish and uninformative cartographic projections as well as such vast lacunae in coverage as to render it virtually worthless as a serious reference.

As I see it, the heart of any atlas worth its salt must be its maps and this compact, user-friendly little volume offers such a wealth of these that it exposes other historical atlases as the patchy, inadequate waste of paper most of them are. I don't buy an atlas for text--though this atlas has excellent if necessarily skeletal narrative accompaniment--I buy it for the maps, to complement my reading. There's nothing sillier than an "atlas" that overdoes it on the text at the expense of the maps; oddly enough, Penguin also publishes some of what I consider the worst atlases available today (see their atlas of the Roman Empire for a prime example)--go figure.

Really this atlas does everything right. My sole complaint is the small size, but this could just as easily be considered a plus (for portability, ease of use, etc.); if only there were a large format historical atlas to match--I'm still looking for a worthy counterpart.

1421: The Year China Discovered America, by Gavin Menzies

The incredible true story of the discovery of America before Columbus was even born.Gavin Menzies's extraordinary findings rewrite history.

On March 8, 1421, the largest fleet the world had ever seen sailed from its base in China. The ships, huge junks nearly five hundred feet long and built from the finest teak, were under the command of Emperor Zhu Di's loyal eunuch admirals. Their mission was "to proceed all the way to the end of the earth to collect tribute from the barbarians beyond the seas" and unite the whole world in Confucian harmony. Their journey would last more than two years and circle the globe.

When they returned in October 1423, the emperor had fallen, leaving China in political and economic chaos. The great ships, now considered frivolous, were left to rot at their moorings and the records of their journeys were destroyed. Lost in China's long, self-imposed isolation that followed was the knowledge that Chinese ships had reached America seventy years before Columbus and circumnavigated the globe a century before Magellan. Also concealed were how the Chinese colonized America before the Europeans and transplanted to America, Australia, New Zealand and South America the principal economic crops that have fed and clothed the world.

Now, in a landmark historical journey, Gavin Menzies, who spent fifteen years tracing the astonishing voyages of the Chinese fleet, shares the remarkable account of his discoveries and the incontrovertible evidence to support them. His compelling narrative pulls together ancient maps, precise navigational knowledge, astronomy and the surviving accounts of Chinese explorers and the later European navigators to prove that the Chinese had also discovered Antarctica, reached Australia three hundred and fifty years before Cook and solved the problem of longitude three hundred years ahead of the Europeans. 1421 describes the artifacts and inscribed stones left behind by the emperor's fleet, the evidence of wrecked junks along its route -- discovered in locations ranging from the middle of the Mississippi River to tributaries of the Amazon -- and the ornate votive offerings left by the Chinese sailors wherever they landed, in honor of Shao Lin, goddess of the sea.

1421: The Year China Discovered America is the story of a remarkable journey of discovery that rewrites our understanding of history. Our knowledge of world exploration as it has been commonly accepted for centuries must now be reconceived due to this classic work of historical detection.

From Publishers Weekly
A former submarine commander in Britain's Royal Navy, Menzies must enjoy doing battle. The amateur historian's lightly footnoted, heavily speculative re-creation of little-known voyages made by Chinese ships in the early 1400s goes far beyond what most experts in and outside of China are willing to assert and will surely set tongues wagging. According to Menzies's brazen but dull account of the Middle Kingdom's exploits at sea, Magellan, Dias, da Gama, Cabral and Cook only "discovered" lands the Chinese had already visited, and they sailed with maps drawn from Chinese charts. Menzies alleges that the Chinese not only discovered America, but also established colonies here long before Columbus set out to sea. Because China burned the records of its historic expeditions led by Zheng He, the famed eunuch admiral and the focus of this account, Menzies is forced to defend his argument by compiling a tedious package of circumstantial evidence that ranges from reasonable to ridiculous. While the book does contain some compelling claims-for example, that the Chinese were able to calculate longitude long before Western explorers-drawn from Menzies's experiences at sea, his overall credibility is undermined by dubious research methods. In just one instance, when confounded by the derivation of cryptic words on a Venetian map, Menzies first consults an expert at crossword puzzles rather than an etymologist. Such an approach to scholarship, along with a promise of more proof to come in the paperback edition, casts a shadow of doubt over Menzies's discoveries. 32 pages of color illus., 27 maps and diagrams. Book-of-the-Month Club alternate.

Menzies makes the fascinating argument that the Chinese discovered the Americas a full 70 years before Columbus. Not only did the Chinese discover America first, but they also, according to the author, established a number of subsequently lost colonies in the Caribbean. Furthermore, he asserts that the Chinese circumnavigated the globe, desalinated water, and perfected the art of cartography. In fact, he believes that most of the renowned European explorers actually sailed with maps charted by the Chinese. Though most historical records were destroyed during centuries of turmoil in the Far East, he manages to cobble together some feasible evidence supporting his controversial conclusions. Sure to cause a stir among historians, this questionable tale of adventure on the high seas will be hotly debated in academic circles. Margaret Flanagan

A Great Disappointment
By gmcw
I started this book and was quite excited about the possibilities it purported to prove. The farther into the book I read, the more uneasy I became regarding the accuracy of the author's claims. There were too many instances of "This artifact/item proves this fact, however, it has disappeared". When the author came up with claims that pertained to "proofs" of his theory in my home state, he lost me. Had his claims been accurate, it would have been "shouted from the rooftops". I have no doubt that the Chinese explored many of the places the author claimed that they did, however, his "proofs" were merely suppositions and wishful thinking, not verifiable facts.

Not factual at all, not history.
By Jane
Its a historical novel, not much truth in here. But sort of a fun read.
This series is not anything that a person who has studied history for decades will want to read, but if you are looking for some entertainment, then its not bad.
But certainly not a good read for anybody who knows history.

Fascinating Read.
By Duncan Day
This book is a good blend of imaginative historical storytelling, and detailed evidence building to support a case. Mr. Menzies describes not only life in the 15th century, but the voyages and trials of the great treasure fleets from how it might have been experienced. Once drawn into the stories of the voyages and how they might have gone, he spends considerable time walking the reader through his detective work, providing evidence to support his thesis. While not all the evidence is equally compelling or convincing to me (one of the reasons it isn't 5 stars; the other being moments of plodding writing), the idea and the work he has put into it is fascinating and worthy of serious consideration. For the most part, he convinced me, and I now tell my kids this new version of how the world was mapped and how navigational challenges were overcome.

From Publishers Weekly
When infectious-disease specialist Verghese, the Ethiopian-born son of Indian schoolteachers, emigrated to the U.S. and settled in Johnson City, Tenn., in the mid-1980s, he finally felt at peace "in my own country" at last. But his work at the Johnson City Medical Center soon led him into a shadow world of Bible-belt AIDS, often without the support of his colleagues. Verghese discovered a local gay community that was then untested for the HIV virus. If revealed, these people's closeted relationships would have, writes Verghese, made them stand out "like Martians." The author tells the stories of several patients, including the gay man who must reconcile with his father and the "innocent" man who has contracted AIDS through a contaminated blood transfusion but who, concerned about society's response to his plight, keeps his disease a secret even though he believes that "this thing, this virus, is from hell, from the devil himself." Verghese reveals his own confusions about homosexuality, immigrant identity and his wife's fears about his health. Writing with an outsider's empathy and insight, casting his chronicle in graceful prose, he offers a memorable tale that both captures and transcends time and place. From Library Journal
In fall 1985 Verghese--who was born in Ethiopia of Indian parents--returned with his wife and newborn son to Johnson City, Tennessee, where he had done his internship and residence. As he watched AIDS infect the small town, he and the community learned many things from one another, including the power of compassion. An AIDS expert who initially had no patients, Verghese describes meeting gay men and then eventually others struggling with this new disease. Verghese's patients include a factory worker confronting her husband's AIDS, bisexuality, and her own HIV status and a religious couple infected via a blood transfusion attempting to keep their disease secret from their church and their children. This novelistic account, occasionally overly detailed, provides a heartfelt perspective on the American response to the spread of AIDS. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 1/94.

From Booklist
Infectious disease specialist Verghese is a Christian from subcontinental India who earned his M.D. in Ethiopia, and living in various cultures has helped him to be open-minded toward and supportive of his patients, who currently are the veterans and civilians living in and around Johnson City in east Tennessee. His book covers the five years in the latter 1980s when AIDS began to make itself felt in the area and during which he treated gays, victims of tainted transfusions, and infected spouses. Among the book's fascinating features are its portrayals of the gradually increasing impact of AIDS on the community, the changing relationships between Verghese and other health caregivers and the patients, and the frightening toll the disease took on families, friends, and society. Nor were Verghese himself, his wife, and even his children immune to those grinding forces. Few, if any, books written by someone without AIDS have offered such a perceptive and realistic perspective on this disease and its ramifications. William Beatty

At first Verghese seems like an interested outsider
By Amazon Customer
In My Own Country is an autobiographical narrative of Dr. Abraham Verghese and his work as an infectious disease physician in rural Tennessee during the early years of the HIV pandemic. Verghese is a powerful writer, and his rendering of the AIDS crisis immortalizes the victims of the AIDS crisis in Johnson City. More than that, Verghese offers a rare perspective of the time—he starts out his story as little more than an outsider stumbling into an interesting medical phenomenon. He was not gay, had little connection with gay community, and was neither an advocate nor an enemy of gay men. Yet, over the course of the novel we see how their stories begin to envelope him. At first Verghese seems like an interested outsider, and we wonder if his fascination is purely medical. But when the young men come to him he learns their names, and he asks for their stories. Perhaps because he is a real foreigner in a place that has made them to feel foreign too, they open up to him. Giving his patients the opportunity to speak is one of the few medicines Verghese has. Medically speaking, he offers little in terms of real therapy. He becomes a doctor specializing in palliative care.

Over the course of the novel, Dr. Verghese shows his readers the immense role a physician can play in the lives of patients. His patients are dying. They are afraid. There is little he can do to ease these physical pains. But he is there for them. And it is clear that many of them feel a true patient-physician bond with him as he helps them navigate their journey from life to death. This isn’t an easy process for the patients dying of AIDS, or for Dr. Verghese.

As we see a community form around his perseverance to treat his patients with dignity, we also see how his job begins to overtake his life. As Verghese becomes indispensible to his patients, his relationship with his wife and family deteriorates. We feel for the doctor as he misses important moments in his personal life. We can feel how he is pulled in different directions. He needs to choose between his patients and his family. We see how he chooses his patients. By the end of the novel, it is clear that Dr. Verghese is burned out. His marriage is strained and he has nightmares about the infection that consumes his working hours. We end the book with the same uncertainty that he feels. It turns out that the doctor’s calling has drained his spirit.

The book ends with Dr. Verghese making an important discovery about the pattern of AIDS in rural areas, and deciding to leave Johnson city for somewhere new and more detached. It is a conclusion that fits the topic. This book is not just about a viral pandemic. It does a good job of detailing HIV before treatments, but it’s mostly about the evolution of an idealistic physician. Read this book if you’d like to understand how incurable diseases affect both patients and their healthcare providers. You’ll get a glimpse into the hidden and sometimes heart-wrenching world of doctor-patient relationships.

Appalachian Spring…
By John P. Jones III
…summer, fall, and winter. The four seasons. Attune to all, because one has decided to pause long enough in life’s journeys to call one small piece of the earth “home,” as in, “my own country.”

The proverbial butterfly wings of the chaos theory launched two vectors whose paths were so highly improbable. A man leaves his home in Galilee, whom the world would call St. Thomas, and convinces many in a coastal part of India known as Kerala to become adherents of a new religion. As a result, that area would always have a much higher literacy rate, the initial prerequisite to become a teacher, even an expat one in Africa. Abraham Verghese’s parents were teachers in Ethiopia, where he was born, and given his Christian name. The overthrow of Haile Selassie in Verghese’s birthplace required him to flee. He came to America, worked as an orderly in a big city hospital, would finish his medical training to become a doctor in Madras (now Chennai). A sliver of the American medial leadership convinced itself it would be best NOT to be self-sufficient in medical humanpower; rather foreign labor should be imported, and hence what Verghese calls the “cowpath” was created: Indians, but also other nationals would become “the drones,” as he calls them, of the medical establishment, initially working in the inner city big city hospitals. After “bootcamp,” the “drones” were free to disperse across America, with many going to small towns in the rural areas. Many Indians praised the natural beauty and small town life around Johnson City, Tennessee; Verghese was primarily attracted to the area because he liked the people. He obtained a post, and would live on the bucolic campus of the Veterans Administration Home there.

The second vector commenced in Central Africa sometime shortly after the First World War, when, based on genetic studies, it appears that the virus known as HIV would cross the species barrier from monkeys and/or gorillas and enter a human. For 4-5 decades, the virus never gained enough traction to become an epidemic; people simply would die of unknown “tropical diseases.” Shortly after independence from Belgium, the Congo would be forced to import teachers since their former colonial masters never trained enough. The government of the Congo brought them from Haiti. (See The Origins of AIDS). As Verghese notes: gays watched from the sidelines while heterosexuals enjoyed their “sexual revolution” in the 1960’s. They decided to commence their own in the 1970’s, and the warmth of Haiti made it a gay resort destination. Very Bad timing.

The two vectors would cross in the summer of 1985, when a very sick man tried to make it back to his own country – of birth and upbringing – from his home in New York City. He made it to the Emergency Room instead, and became Patient #1 of the AIDS epidemic hitting Johnson City. Verghese is in the ER with his parents. The father, always having been in denial, and now enraged, asks: “Is my son a queer?” Verghese reports the mother’s reaction: “She gazed at the floor, nodding slowly, confirming what she had always known.”

And that is one of the many strengths of this seminal account of the early days of the AIDS epidemic. The author has the very keen eye of an internist, a clinician who is trained to carefully observe the human body for signs of anomalies. He uses that keen eye on the human spirit, at the time it is under duress, as in life-and-death matters. He says that he is: “…a doctor, a scientist, trained in professional detachment, but all the usual postures seemed satirical in the face of AIDS. I felt these deaths.” And he cried more than once, the proper reaction in the face of this devastating epidemic, to lose one’s “professional detachment.”

The author primary work is as a doctor at the Veterans Administration, treating, mainly old soldiers, who wear their lung cancer from smoking as a badge of honor. From this basic pedestrian clinical practice, Verghese becomes the “AIDS” doctor in Johnson City since he is the only internist. The 3x5 index cards on his patients are in his pocket, growing one by one. At the beginning, they are only male homosexuals. There are also two females who have been their partners. Then there is one couple, “pillars of the community,” who contracted HIV/AIDS at Duke Medical Center, from blood transfusions, weeks before the blood supply would be routinely tested. Awful timing, yet again. Likewise, there was a hemophiliac who contracted it from a batch of Factor VIII, which was so often produced from Haitian blood donors. After five years, Verghese will have more than 80 such cards, more than 80 heart-rending stories.

The author describes the medicine involved, and the reactions of medical personnel. He told the very human stories behind 10-20 of his patients. He relates the varying reactions of relatives, and other members of the community. He describes his own fears of catching the disease, and the increased tensions with his wife (and other members of the Indian community) because of his work. He sits with one of the patients at her single-wide trailer, and enjoys a smoke. He is introspective enough to wonder if he had treated the “pillars of the community” differently, because it was “not really their fault,” unlike the others, that segments of the community condemned for bringing down the wrath of god on their “lifestyle choices.” The author only lightly touches on the slow acknowledgment of this epidemic by President Reagan, the FDA, and other leading members of the medical and financial establishments.

After five years he was obviously burnt-out and decided to leave the place he previously had described as: “I suppose this is when you know that a town has become your town: where others see brick, a broken window, a boarded up storefront, you feel either moved to tears or to joy. The map of the town becomes the map of your memories, the grid on which you play out your obsessions…” His country, the heart of Appalachia.

At the end of 1989 Verghese picked up his temporary roots, and moved, with his family, to Iowa. I had started life in the Appalachian Mountains, and had followed other vectors. In 1989 I also picked up my temporary roots of ten years duration, in the deserts of Saudi Arabia. Three months before Verghese crossed into Iowa for the first time, I was in a one-month immersion French class in Villfranche-sur-mer, France. A small class of ten. The teacher was gay, and it became increasingly clear that he had AIDS, as did some of his friends. Utilizing his discretion, we had a one-hour class on AIDS – in French. He concluded the class by asking each of us the very pointed question. If this was a disease that impacted only the “haute bourgeoisie,” would we already have a cure? My answer was a straightforward: “Oui.” 6-stars for Verghese’s heart-rending and evocative account.

Rural Frontline of AIDS From The Doctor's Perspective
By Tom
Abraham Verghese's story perfectly illustrates a variety of aspects of society ranging from Tennessee suburban culture to medical hierarchy. The cover story is the spread of HIV and AIDS from the cities. He meets a diverse array of patients that help to highlight the different victims of the HIV and AIDS epidemic. First there was Gordon, a young gay man returning back home to Tennessee after catching HIV from one of his partners in the big city of Atlanta. Then there were Ed and Bobby, a gay couple that had previously tried to remain heterosexual. Next was Vickie and Clyde, a married couple that got HIV from the husband's homosexual activities. A perfect example of "innocent" victims, were Will and Bess. Will was a successful businessman that got HIV through blood transfusions. He spread the infection to his wife through sexual intercourse. Another unfortunate victim was Norman, a hemophiliac that got HIV through one of his factor VIII injections. The personal story of each of these individuals help to show the true tragedy of the HIV and AIDS epidemic.

In the foreground of the HIV and AIDS story is Verghese's own battle against the medical establishment. The dire reality of the situation and lack of medical treatment brings up issues of euthanasia and DNR. In addition, Verghese's position as an infectious disease specialist reimburses him at a lower rate than the other specialists in his field. His role as almost a primary care giver leaves him dealing with the most stressful aspects of patient care.

My professor stated that this book could be viewed as a primary source document of the US HIV and AIDS epidemic. I agree 100%, Verghese's book with its colorful descriptions is a on-the-grounds narrative suited for the those looking into the HIV and AIDS fear years.
