From the Back Cover
This graceful and digestible volume was called 'a little classic' by the New York Times Book Review. In it, one of the best known theologians, Tillich, explores the idea of faith in all its dimensions, defining the subject in the process. As Reinhold Niebuhr wrote in the New York Times Book Review, 'Paul Tillich is a giant among us.' 'A little classic . . . His analyses of the purely intellectual, emotional and volitional interpretations of the dynamics of faith are superbly subtle in distinguishing what is true from what is false in each position . . . Again reveals the astounding virtuosity of the man and the thinker.' ---Reinhold Niebuhr 'Tillich remains one of the very few of the very great theologians of our time. Dynamics of Faith is a good introduction for those who would like to get acquainted with him, an important clarification of his thought for those who have struggled through his earlier books and an important essay in its own right.' ---Albert C. Outler

This book helps put everything together for those of us who used to rely on statements of faith.
By flyinpro
Personally this is one of the books I will refer to again and again. I haven't lost my faith, just dogmatism that used to dominate it. I needed a place to go where I could still keep my fatih and yet live in the 21st century, and this book helped me tremendously. If you have lost your faith in the doctrines of your religious affiliation and need to develop a new understanding of theology then this book can be very helpful. It distinguishes between belief and faith and shows that by understanding the difference you can replace the troubling doctrines that you can no longer believe in and still have a faith that is vibrant. In fact, you must deal with those doctrines you have trouble with in order to live a life of true faith. It is not simple reading and it will take me many years to understand some of these concepts, but it is a journey that I am excited to be on. Personally, I believe that Paul Tillich, through the short time he spent in the US teaching has influenced every other writer that has had a profound affect on my life and I cannot be more grateful.

Thoughtful and Challenging
By S. Tomlinson
Anyone living with a sense of "ultimate concern" -- living as if, at the bottom of it all, something truly matters -- will find Tillich a thoughtful and encouraging companion in the making of meaning. He carefully explores what is means to have faith (whether your faith be in material success or human potential or religious authorities) and the ways in which faith can go wrong (becoming "demonic") or provide a durable foundation for the rest of ones life. Apart from his specialized terms, he writes in an accessible, almost conversational style. Faith, writes Tilich, involves the whole person and is far more than belief, and his little book compassionately challenges the part of us that wants to take our beliefs for granted.

One faith can only be attacked by another faith.
By Wil Roese
Paul Tillich defines faith as being in a state of ultimate concern or loving something with all our mind, body and spirit Examples of an object of our ultimate concern include money, success, God, and our nation. The object of our ultimate concern becomes our god. If we put our faith in something other than the ultimate, than that faith can be destructive. Therefore, there is always a risk in faith and this risk causes doubt. This doubt is overcome by courage which is one aspect of faith. Faith involves the whole personality: our intellect, our will, and our emotions. Faith must be distinguished from belief although belief is an aspect of faith. Therefore arguments for a belief or even a will to have a belief can not produce faith alone. The emotional aspect of faith is the feeling of unconditional dependence but again faith can not be limited to an emotional feeling.

We can only express the object of our ultimate concern symbolically as the object itself is beyond our grasp. Here Tillich makes the distinction between a sign and a symbol. Wile both point to some reality beyond themselves a sign does so only by convention while a symbol participates in that reality to which it points. Symbols reveal a reality that can not be understood without them and also reveal a before hidden, corresponding area of our soul. Works of art can act as symbols in these ways. Symbols can not be invented but come to have a life of their own. Faith goes beyond belief in a story/myth to acceptance of the ultimate concern to which the story symbolically points. Accepting the story literally destroys its symbolic meaning and makes it unable to point us to the ultimate. The literal interpretation of the story comes from belief in a god confined to space and time and makes the symbol an idol.

Tillich next discusses two types of faith; ontological faith and moral faith. Oncologic faith is the faith of being. It is the experience of the ultimate. Moral faith is the faith to be what the ultimate intended us to be. There is a constant tension between these two forms of faith.

Faith and reason are thought to be in conflict with each other only by those who misunderstand the true meaning of faith. Reason is what makes us human and any "faith" that tries to destroy reason is dehumanizing. Faith is built on reason for it takes reason to distinguish our ultimate concern from our other concerns. Tillich defines reason as the "meaningful structure of the mind and reality." Although faith is based on reason it is not confined to reason but reaches out to that with is beyond the grasp of reason, for our reason is finite. Faith is the ultimate fulfillment of reason. Science deals with the physical universe and faith deals with our ultimate concern which is beyond the physical universe. Conflicts occur when science tries to deal with issues beyond the physical universe or faith tries to deal with issues of the physical universe. The relationship between faith and philosophy, in the traditional sense, is more complicated because they both deal with ultimate reality but faith uses symbols and philosophy uses concepts. The reason for the different tools is the fact that the philosophy remains distinct from the ultimate reality/concern. In the symbol of God are the concepts of life, being, sprit, and love. In the symbol of the fall is the concept of man's estrangement from his essential nature.

The truthfulness of our faith can be looked at subjectively and objectively. Our faith is subjectively true if it what we are really ultimately concerned about and it is objectively true if it what is really the ultimate. There can be no faith without the participation of that which is ultimate. If there is no revelation of the ultimate, than man can not have faith in this ultimate. Faith, as our ultimate concern, integrates all other aspects of our life. Love is an inseparable aspect of faith. True love contains both eros and agape. Acton is the expression of love. Not only does faith exist in community but there can be no community of any kind without a shared faith. One faith can only be attacked by another faith.

Section by Section Review
By Amazon Customer
The Pokemon Company have put out an odd product this time. There are several sections to this guide, and it is rather interesting that it is a volume 1. I'm assuming that this means that Part 1 is for Johto, and Part 2 is for Kanto. We'll see, when there is a Part 2.

I've had mixed feelings towards this book. As a strategy guide, it seems to be lacking some things that I am used to. Also, some of the information is not as in-depth as I would prefer, while other information is remarkably in-depth.

So, I'll break this up into sections for my review.

Section 1: Introduction of characters.
-This section has a few pictures and names of the various characters you'll meet in your adventure. While I understand this is a flavor section, many of these characters are introduced later as well. I feel that this section was a waste of a few pages.

Index:
-This section was done rather well, with other sorting methods used to try and find things quickly. This made for a nice reference section.

Region Map:
-Nice detail, and a general list of interesting items at each location. I will probably use this quite often.

"How to Use This Book"
-I'm not sure why this was added... it is another index page.

Primer for Pokémon Training
-Some information here seems to be reiterated a few times, but there is some interesting information here. There is a list of the event Pokémon, advice on using False Swipe and sleep to catch Pokémon, and other listings for those that are both new and familiar to Pokémon. I learned a few things about increasing and decreasing Pokémon encounter rates as well. Useful information is provided on how the damage is increased or decreased from typing, and nice source of data for other things. I liked most of this section.
-Sample team building is provided as well, for ways to work around each starter. For instance, it says to put a Sandshrew and Krabby on your team to assist Chikorita, creating a nice triangle of resistances and strengths. A sample of what the guide says: "Chikorita is weak against Fire-type movies. That's why you want Krabby, a Pokémon who's strong against fire-type Pokémon. However, Krabby is weak against electric types, so add Sandshrew for its advantage over Electric types. Water types that have the upper hand against Sandshrew are at a disadvantage against Chikorita." This gives you a solid foundation for building a sample team.

-I would have loved for this section to go more in-depth with teams. People have been playing with competitive teams for years, and advice on team strategies would have been interesting. There could have been advice on building a sandstorm team, on what types of Pokémon become good physical and special walls, and sweepers. Even general descriptions of what these terms mean could be a drastic addition that can give people a large advantage.

-Radio Programming charts were useful, but overly descriptive. Looking at them, I realize they used the same set of charts for all of them, but some space could have been saved condensing the data.

-A list of items is provided of what your mother buys if you have her saving money. However, it does NOT state how much money you have to have saved for each of these.

-Shiny Leaf guide was rather interesting. This is something I wasn't actually aware of, until I saw it. A nice chart displays where to get different leaves for your Pokémon. I really liked this charge, but I'm not sure if this needed to take up an entire page.

-Overall, this section is full of information for a new player. Old players might learn something new,, but not as much. I do wish some of the information was more in-depth, but I'm happy with most of what I have. To improve this section, a bigger guide on team building with a handful of teams and strategies would be nice. There are websites out there providing this information for now, though.

Johto Walkthrough:
-Pay good attention to the first page of this. There are keys here that are NOT repeated elsewhere (though some of it could easily have been at the bottom of pages associated with it). Notice the Encounter Rate chart, Version Differences, and field moves. These are not repeated, which is something I kind of disliked.

-There are good step-by-step instructions, though I dislike the blue section. There are orange steps that you preform the first time you enter somewhere. When you get to the blue steps, they are "after x event has happened." In the early part of the guide, this information gets repeated, so that creates redundant information.

-There are notes on many pages to the right of steps, and some are useful tips or advice. Sometimes this is just flavor text, but I found it to be useful information more times than not.

-In the guide, there is a "differences between Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver" section. This explains some quick information, but the information is not complete. The Pokémon that are different between the two does not have a complete listing, but that is the only thing that wasn't complete. Note, however, that it says here that you can get both Lugia and Ho-Oh on both versions, just at different times and levels. The Pokédex later on does NOT state the same information.

-Another special section describes Pokémon that are useful for field moves. This is a great section, and people should pay attention to it. Rather than teaching HMs to your fighting Pokémon, create a slave based on this chart that you can teach the extra abilities to.

-Wherever items are located, there is a graphic of a pokéball in its location. The bad thing for this, on the maps, is that the items are not listed. There is a chart that lists the items and when they are available for you to pick up, but there is nothing saying what item is what. I found this frustrating.

-Puzzles are NOT solved for you. This goes for the Unown areas and the gyms. The player is still left to figure out everything on their own. Generally, when I buy a strategy guide, it is to get past some of these puzzles quicker. Unfortunately, if there was a puzzle I was unable to solve myself, I had to go online to find the answer.

-Trainer information is ONLY provided for Gym Leaders. For all other trainers, there is nothing provided for reference. The maps do give the trainer names and numbers, but their Pokémon are still unknown. Fortunately, you can use the names to cross reference with some gaming websites to know what you need to prepare for.
-Overall, the guide section requires a little reworking, but it is manageable. I'm still curious as to how many pages could have been saved if they didn't re-iterate several steps of the guide.

-NOTE- This guide only takes you through Johto. In the games, you unlock more content, and Pokémon, once you've beaten the Elite Four for the first time. As this is Part 1 of the guide for the games, it should be safe to assume that this information will be provided in another book, at about the same cost.

Safari Zone Guide
-Interesting new section. I found this useful, and it explained the way that the new Safari Zone works. A few patterns are displayed for you, and it tells you how to get the Pokémon you are looking for within. Great addition.

Pokéathlon Guide
-Awesome. The guide provides information on unlocking other areas, what Pokémon to use for each event, rules for the events, and strategies to win each one. I enjoyed this section, and I feel that each page was worth my time to read.

Pokéwalker Guide
-Nice information. Consolidated lists, useful charts, and it explains almost everything about the Pokéwalker. Unfortunately, it did skip over special 'events' that happen on the walker, and how sometimes a Pokémon will start following you automatically, if you don't already have one.

-I found this information to be extremely useful. This was worth putting in, and the extra information was enjoyable.

Wi-Fi Connection Guide
-A lot of information is here, but it is yet another place where competitive teams could have been explained, or competitive battling.

-This does not give information on connecting for Wi-Fi, nor anything on troubleshooting problems. Definitely something that was overlooked.

Link Play Guide
-Useful information again, but still nothing on connecting and troubleshooting.

Adventure Data
-Useful information abound. There is a ton of useful information here, and the data can seem overwhelming at times. I found all of the information I needed here, and more. There were well organized charts, item listing, and how to locate several things. These charts make up for the lack of the next section. If it wasn't for them, I would be completely upset with my purchase.

-Pokemon weakness charts were amazing. I've not seen this before, but only brief chart of what is effective against other types. This is a first I've seen. You can look up different Pokémon and find out what is effective, what doesn't work, and several other things. I really enjoyed this section, and was happy to find it. Unlike other guides, this lists everything per Pokémon. The data here is amazing.

Pokédex
-This section needed a lot of improvements. I'll actually sort this by pros and cons.
Pros:
*Direct Attack in the move charts. This lets you know if the move will directly attack an enemy or not. Useful for when you are attacking Pokémon that cause status upon direct contact.

*Performance stats were easy to read, assisting you for building a Pokéathlon team.

*Stats are useful for knowing how well the Pokémon grow in each area. Useful for team building.

*Move charts have useful information attached to the move the Pokémon learn at various levels.

Cons:
*Move charts do not include egg moves, TMs, or HMs.

*How to Obtain is not always accurate, complete, and is often lacking. With only two sections for it, I found it to be wanting.

*Move charts often repeated movies for evolved Pokémon. The higher evolved forms would show moves as being known by default, but would display it as being learned at level 1 again for each previous evolution. This made some lists longer when they shouldn't have been.

*The listed abilities do not have a general description of what they do. You have to look in the back of the book for this.

*There is no information on breeding Pokémon. Nothing explains the egg groups, how to breed, or egg moves. I found this information to be quite lacking in that regard.

*No separate section for evolution lines for Pokémon. Instead, you had to look at the already crowded "How to Obtain" section.

-In the Pokémon games, the Pokédex is one of the most important databases. For this guide, I had to go to online sources for everything. This is disappointing, as that is one of the main reasons why I picked the guide up. Also, only the Johto Pokédex is included... which is rather disappointing. It appears that they want people to buy the separate Pokédex guide in order to get complete information. Without previewing this guide though, I think I'll stick with the online Pokédex that I've used before.

-Overall, I was completely disappointed in the Pokédex section of the guide.

The Pokédex is one of the larger sections of the book for me, and finding it lacking really put me into a negative mood. With all of the smaller things about, I found myself cross referencing this book (mainly for the detailed maps) with guides I found online for free. A guide is not made to be a reference to use with something for free... it should be a great offline resource so that nothing else is required. This guide requires a lot of work before I will be happy with it. I hope that Part 2 doesn't seem as rushed as this one.

Unfortunately, this is the only guide available for the game. No other companies (prima, etc etc) have created one, so we are stuck with this if we want a paper guide. Rather upsetting, really.

Great for the first part!
By ClassicRocker
The year is 2000, i had just finished second grade in June. The month is July, and we have just been told there was going to be a new pokemon game. I didn't really care at the time, but when i got Pokemon Silver in 2000 i couldn't have been happier. I got myself the primia guide book originally back then and saw i could travel to Kanto, where the original pokemon took place AND could battle my charter from Red Blue and Yellow. 10 years later I am a senior in high school when i hear they are going to remake gold and silver!!! i was so happy they were my favorite pokemon games as a kid, i liked how it changed from day to night in the games. It took me three years to finally get heartgold. and as like before i had to get a guide to go with it. I was unhappy with how they were both split up but in the end was happy. I couldn't believe how much changed! It then inspired me to fix my original copy of silver....great guide book to explain on the changes with Gold and Silver and how they were similar too!

If this book is for Dummies, then I need the one for seriously brain damaged individuals. This book has several instances of listing menu options that do not exist in the software. I would not purchase this book to learn Project 2013. I have a masters degree and have been running a successful business since September of 1999. You be the judge, but I would look elsewhere to learn this software.

I'm about 1/4 way through this, but it is very well-written and organized to get the most from Project. Project, BTW, is not super-simple, but it's superior to all the cool new apps out there if you really want to analyze and optimize projects. No pain, no gain.

Take on the Street: How to Fight for Your Financial Future, by Arthur Levitt

In Take on the Street, Arthur Levitt--Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission for eight years under President Clinton--provides the best kind of insider information: the kind that can help honest, small investors protect themselves from the deliberately confusing ways of Wall Street.

At a time when investor confidence in Wall Street and corporate America is at an historic low, when many are seriously questioning whether or not they should continue to invest, Levitt offers the benefits of his own experience, both on Wall Street and as its chief regulator. His straight talk about the ways of stockbrokers (they are salesmen, plain and simple), corporate financial statements (the truth is often hidden), mutual fund managers (remember who they really work for), and other aspects of the business will help to arm everyone with the tools they need to protect—and enhance—their financial future.

  • Great product!

From Publishers Weekly
Levitt, the Securities and Exchange Commission's longest-serving chairman, supervised stock markets during the late 1990s dot-com boom. As working Americans poured billions into stocks and mutual funds, corporate America devised increasingly opaque strategies for hoarding most of the proceeds. Levitt reveals their tactics in plain language, then spells out how to intelligently invest in mutual funds and the stock market. His advice is aimed squarely at small, individual investors, as he explains how to look for clues of malfeasance in annual reports, understand press releases and draw more from reliable sources. Woven throughout are his recollections about the SEC boardroom fights he oversaw. While most of them serve to illustrate a point about the market and its machinations, some passages, often outlining a failure or frustration, are oddly apologetic. In particular, when addressing the origins of recent corporate scandals (e.g., those involving Enron and Arthur Anderson), his effort to lay the responsibility equally on indifferent legislators, special interest groups, greedy CEOs and, perhaps most of all, lazy investors, makes it clear that Levitt wishes to avoid criminalizing corporate officers' actions. (After all, many of them are his friends and colleagues.) The final chapters, detailing how stocks are bought after they're ordered ("Pay Attention to the Plumbing") and retirement plans are structured ("Getting Your 401(k) in Shape") return to practical, profitable advice. One in particular, "Beware False Profits: How to Read Financial Statements," is worth the book's price. Levitt's mini-MBA course-sans the lifelong club connections-should be mandatory reading for anyone with a dollar invested in the stock market.

Good advice to individual investors from the longest-serving chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

From Booklist
Levitt was the longest-serving SEC Chairman (1993-2001) and was instrumental in making changes to protect individual investors from fraud and level the playing field through equal access to information. This ultimate insider reports that a culture of collusion still exists between brokers, underwriters, analysts, and mutual-fund managers--all eager to make sales and keep the Wall Street casino churning. He shows what really happens when you place an order through your broker, and he reveals the "seven deadly sins" that mutual-fund managers make, such as the hidden costs of fees and the tendency to overtrade, which usually lowers returns. Despite the current bleak market, he continues to tout the advantages of investing over time and has lots of advice on how to protect yourself and make relatively safe financial decisions. He keeps to a fairly traditional approach, as expected, steering clear of Wall Street's obsession with short-term results and market timing. This is solid, understandable advice for the conservative investor. David Siegfried

Assume you will be taken advantage of
By Al Pal
I think it's a good book. It covers a broad range of financial topics from basic (how to pick a financial adviser / if at all) to complex (plumbing of the financial system). Arthur Levitt is perhaps the last competent SEC Chairman who gave a damn (through 2016) about investors' rights, auditor independence, and corporate disclosure.

My favorite thing about the book is his perspective on perverse incentives inherent to the financial system. Advisers' choice of financial products for clients, brokers' choice of market centers, and corporations' relationships with auditors -- to name just a few -- are all sub-optimal arrangements for end-customers, i.e., the investors.

Another favorite is the discussion of different ways companies can game financial statements in the Beware of False Profits chapter. Pro-forma statements that add-back the bad and keep the good (with Trump Hotels used as an example; hmmm can't wait for selective White House disclosures); restructuring charges that front-load recurring expenses; "cookie jar reserves" and "channel stuffing" aka "bill and hold" that inflate profits (where "Chainsaw" Al Dunlap finally cut his teeth); write-downs and reversals; vendor financing (some customers may not pay you back after all, Motorola); goodwill gaming; in-process R&D; and early revenue recognition (hello Microstrategy, you and your scumbag CEO Michael Saylor are still around after all these years). What's appalling is that more often than not, the consequences to such corporate misbehavior are immaterial to perpetrators -- cease and desist letters, fines, and perhaps an occasional short jail sentence.

Bottom line: you have to be very careful who you trust and how you interpret the information provided to you. The devil is in the detail... and understanding everyone's incentives. Assume you will be taken advantage of.

Unique and Important Perspective
By Chiu-ying Wong
The perspective of the former SEC chairman can be very useful for ordinary investors. I learned, for example, how and why some important accounting standards were changed in recent times. This helps me to read financial reports with a better focus. The politics of the investment community was also very interesting. The letters from politicians to the SEC, questioning SEC's proposal to limit the amount of consulting work that accounting firms could do for their audit clients, were particularly enlightening. The expose of how a small group of people can influence policies of public interest is already worthy of the price. I was not completely naive before, but reading such letters from people who gained power by claiming to be protectors of public interest swings the argument for more safeguards for small investors. Self-regulation of professional bodies simply does not work, at least as far as the accounting profession is concerned.
I would have been even happier if the book were to go deeper, and gave more examples, on the issue of number games, in place of the last chapter, on 401K. But the existing chapters on accounting tricks already contained more beef than those in the other book, 'Financial Shenangans' by Schilit, which were very repetitive and not much depth.

Orthodoxy and Heresy in Early Christian Contexts: Reconsidering the Bauer ThesisFrom Pickwick Publications

Eighty years ago, Walter Bauer promulgated a bold and provocative thesis about early Christianity. He argued that many forms of Christianity started the race, but one competitor pushed aside the others, until this powerful "orthodox" version won the day. The victors re-wrote history, marginalizing all other perspectives and silencing their voices, even though the alternatives possessed equal right to the title of normative Christianity. Bauer's influence still casts a long shadow on early Christian scholarship. Were heretical movements the original forms of Christianity? Did the heretics outnumber the orthodox? Did orthodox heresiologists accurately portray their opponents? And more fundamentally, how can one make any objective distinction between "heresy" and "orthodoxy"? Is such labeling merely the product of socially situated power? Did numerous, valid forms of Christianity exist without any validating norms of Christianity? This collection of essays, each written by a relevant authority, tackles such questions with scholarly acumen and careful attention to historical, cultural-geographical, and socio-rhetorical detail. Although recognizing the importance of Bauer's critical insights, innovative methodologies, and fruitful suggestions, the contributors expose numerous claims of the Bauer thesis (in both original and recent manifestations) that fall short of the historical evidence.

Review
''Orthodoxy and Heresy in Early Christian Contexts brings up to date a long-existing debate about those other gospels and early Christianity. Covering issues tied to the Apostolic Fathers, Irenaeus, Gnosticism, and the rule of faith, here is a solid compendium of essays that issues a significant challenge to the thesis of Walter Bauer--that orthodoxy emerged late from a largely sociological battle over the origin of the Jesus movement. It shows how orthodoxy's roots are far older than claims of other options from the second century and beyond. This is simply profitable reading.''
--Darrell L. Bock, Senior Research Professor of New Testament Studies, Dallas Theological Seminary, Dallas, TX

''With worthy contributions from both New Testament and patristic scholars, Orthodoxy and Heresy in Early Christian Contexts offers a timely reappraisal and rebuttal of the 'Bauer thesis.' The authors of this handy volume simultaneously sum up Bauer's evidence and arguments, size up subsequent post-Bauer mutations of the thesis, and serve up a needed corrective from a variety of perspectives--a must-have for students of New Testament and early Christian studies.''
--Michael J. Svigel, Associate Professor of Theological Studies, Dallas Theological Seminary, Dallas, TX

''Modern scholars continue to be entranced by Walter Bauer's thesis that earliest Christianity was wildly diverse with no clear orthodoxy or heresy. Indeed, it is Bauer's thesis that has provided the foundation for many of the modern attacks on the integrity of the Bible. Thus, I am thankful for this outstanding collection of essays aimed at refuting Bauer's thesis and setting the record straight about what earliest Christianity was really like. With clarity and thoroughness, these essays sweep away the cloud of doubt raised by Bauer and shine fresh light on how Christianity developed in the earliest centuries.''
--Michael J. Kruger, President, Reformed Theological Seminary, Charlotte, NC --Wipf and Stock Publishers

Although not a layman I would not recommend this book to either a layman or a theologian

A very difficult book to follow. All it really is, is a compilation of many papers and articles that deal with the Bauer theory and a modern look at it. Somewhat disjointed in its approach and very academic. Although not a layman I would not recommend this book to either a layman or a theologian.

A Helpful Work
By Daniel Pandolph blogging at danielpandolph . com
Scholars like Bart Ehrman and Elaine Pagels have brought to the masses the Bauer thesis. What is the Bauer thesis? In a nutshell, it is the theory advanced by German scholar Walter Bauer that states early Christianity was composed of multiple "orthodoxies"/"heresies." It was until later that the church at Rome established its dominant form of orthodoxy that destroyed all competitors. In this way, Bauer advanced the idea that there was no true orthodoxy. We should consider even gnostic forms of Christianity as acceptable. Therefore the history of Christianity is one of silencing different views.

So here is the deal: Bauer's thesis has been basically refuted on EVERY SINGLE point over the past century. The details of his argument just cannot sustain his reconstruction. However, the History Channel and Ehrman, Pagels and Karen Armstrong seem insistent on spreading this view as if it is fact. Because they write at a popular level, their views have really caught on. I have had a few of my students basically trumpet that view. "What is orthodoxy anyway," they ask rhetorically. What indeed...

Now, from Pickwick Publications comes Orthodoxy and Heresy in Early Christian Contexts: Reconsidering the Bauer Thesis, a book dealing with refuting (again) the Bauer thesis. This work is composed by multiple authors, each dealing with early Christianity, orthodoxy and heresy. Some chapters include dealings on the apostolic father's understanding of orthodoxy, Montanism, heresiologist and more. The basic conclusion of all these studies can be summed up in the last argument:

"In a closing reflection for future trajectories of inquiry, the decisive issue does not seem to entail a historical discernment of precedence (which could theoretically vary by locale) or of plurality (which all scholars acknowledge in some form or manner) but of the possibility and nature of a focused normativity." (pg. 248)

Yes, there was diversity but there was always a consist stream of orthodoxy. To argue otherwise is to go against history and the New Testament texts. This book functions as a great refutation of Bauer/Ehrman's thinking.

That said, I wonder who this book was written for. It is too detailed and complex to be considered a "popular" level work. Those convinced of the Bauer thesis will not give much attention to this work since all the contributors are evangelicals. There have already been many works dealing with refuting Bauer's thesis so I don't feel like anything new is really presented here.

I guess the best part of this work is found in the fact that it brings most of the best arguments against Bauer's thesis together in one book. For that reason alone, I highly recommend this work. We live in a world that is skeptical of the truth of orthodoxy. Thus it is impossible to ignore this highly important book.
