About the Author
MARGARET WISE BROWN (1910-1952), best known as the author of Goodnight Moon, wrote countless children's books inspired by her belief that the very young were fascinated by the simple pleasures of the world around them. Among her many bestselling Golden titles are Mister Dog, The Color Kittens, The Golden Egg Book, Seven Little Postmen, The Friendly Book, and The Sailor Dog.

GARTH WILLIAMS (1912-1996) is known for his realistic yet highly expressive animal characters. His unique style has brought to life some of the best-loved children's books of the 20th century, including E. B. White's Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little, and the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. NOT an exact reproduction of the original

The reviewer who said that Golden Books had inexplicably ruined a classic was absolutely right. For some bizarre reason, the publisher decided to delete some pages and add new pages with illustrations that are supposed to be just as good as those done by Garth Williams. (Yeah, riiiight.)

This is a classic instance of trying to fix something that is not broken. It is still a darling story, but if you are looking for the exact book that captured your imagination when you were a child, this ain't it.

To say that I am disappointed is an understatement.

And That Was His Home

"Spring, spring, spring," sang the frog, from a pond by fresh green grasses and flowers. "Spring," said the groundhog, his arms raised in celebration.

So begins this lovely book, telling how a small brown bunny goes down the road and down the road one day when the butteflies are swaying on stalks and a flora botanica of the brightly colored small flowers are unfolding in the warm sunlight. The bunny meets three baby robins still wearing bits of their blue shells, a somewhat inhospitable ground-hog, and the frog in his bog. In none of their homes can this sweet-faced bunny find his home. UNTIL.....

The Little Golden Book is a poem, written like a small song by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Garth Williams with the precision and color of the millefleurs tapestries of the Middle Ages. It is loving, friendly, unfussy, and perfect, a beloved book since 1956---reprinted fresh and sparkling new as children, parents, and grandparents remember it.

The book boards are sturdy, heavy cardboard, the pages are strong enough for years of turning by small hands, and the Amazon price is unbelievably low. I have just purchased five copies as Easter-spring greetings for family & friends and yes, one for myself.

No reservations or reader alerts. "Home for a Bunny" is a heritage gift at a peeps price.

I used to read this to my 2 sons when they were young. They loved it so much that they memorized it & I would pause to let them finish a sentence. They're both grown with families of thier own now so I bought a copy for each of them. Inside the front covers, I wrote a little note that I hope they enjoy reading it to thier kids as much as I enjoyed reading it to them. Cute story, nice pics, wonderful memories. Enjoy!

Finally a book that answers all my questions about using LinkedIn

This book explains step by step how to optimize your profile to be the most effective for career and business building – exactly what all my options are - and unlocks all the possible uses that can allow you to really create your personal brand. How many times have I looked at other people’s profiles and wished I knew how to present myself as well? Even the ability to publish on LinkedIn, taking the step into presenting myself as a thought leader, has always been both a mystery and intimidating to me. Every time I thought she’d leave me hanging, the advice or how to instructions were on the next page. She doesn’t present everything as cookie cutter. She makes it clear you should take whatever resonates for yourself and run with it – not run with everything.

Now I know EXACTLY what I need to do. It’s like the author is literally standing behind me guiding me, even being as detailed in helping me select the best words to describe my professional experience (there’s a complete list in the accompanying website the author has set up to accompany the book!).

There is so much tucked into LinkedIn that you can use without spending a dime to advance where you are at in your career. Grateful to have found this gem. I read it once and now I’m going back, taking it chapter by chapter and making changes where I want.

Thorough and very useful

One thing I can appreciate about this book is the vast amount of information about creating your personal brand and how to promote on social media, namely LinkedIn. I preferred reading one chapter at a time to digest or apply all of the tips and ideas, but I also appreciated the links to other chapters that were mentioned so I could continue the thought that is directly related to what I want to be able to do on my profile. The author really seems knowledgeable in the area and had plenty of facts and tables to give you everything you need to adapt the techniques to your qualities or business. Chapter 2 mentioned that you don't have to fill in every section in your profile because it is not relevant to you. Sometimes it shows that you are trying too hard to make a good impression. This book uses words and concepts that you can understand as well as keeping it approachable for many types of profiles. It is thorough and very useful.

This is a fantastic book! It delivers on the promise of the title! Sandra Long's LinkedIn book does more than offer information on how you can maximize your presence on LinkedIn thereby maximizing your visibility on the web. The format provides a great forum for introspection -- which is key to creating a positive and relevant LinkedIn presence, and therefore a powerful resume.
I recommend this book to my colleagues and my students to help them maximize their professional online presence. One of the side benefits is that once you have gone through the book and created your profile, you will know more about how to best yourself than you did before. Even though LinkedIn is evolving since it was acquired by Microsoft, Ms. Long's book walks the reader through many of the areas of the site that are both helpful and not intuitively visible.

Excellent and useful text! If you have any interest in Scrum, this is the first book to buy!

This is a good read and an extremely useful text. As the blurb states: "Scrum is the most popular agile project management methodology used in web projects today." This is the kind of book that makes finding pertinent information easy and absorbable. There are more online resources made available to readers as well. There are colorful icons used to highlight specific kinds of information, in addition to some clear but informative graphics. The author, M. David Green, is a highly accomplished, writer, speaker, web engineer, agile coach, and the founder of a consultancy that helps people in engineering organizations collaborate to make constant improvement a daily practice. His expertise and facility with the subject matter are very clear in the elegant and useful way the material is presented. If you have any interest at all in Scrum, this is the first book to buy. As a side issue -- the paperback book was shipped in a padded envelope and arrived bent. Amazon should send it in a cardboard mailer, so people can treat their purchases as carefully or casually as they like. I really dislike buying a new book and having it arrive in "Acceptable" condition.

You won't become a scrum ninja, but you will learn everything you need to know at a team level

SitePoints scrum, novice to ninja starts off by giving you some background history into how scrum came about then takes you step by step through the scrum process, starting with who makes up a scrum team through to a hypothetical sprint encapsulating all the rituals and artifacts that make scrum what it is.

Scrum is not for everyone, even though it has major benefits over the old waterfall method of development. The author does point this out albeit not in a big way which is ok. He concentrates on what scrum is and leaves the decision as to whether this method of development will work for you.
In short, scrum is a methodology in which development is broken down into generally two week "sprints". During this two week sprint you have certain "rituals" that must be adhered to starting with sprint planning in which you detail "stories" and allocate "points" to each one which is a rough indicator of the amount of time/effort the team thinks that particular story should take. Each day there is a "daily standup" in which each member of the scrum team details what they accomplished the previous day, what they hope to accomplish this coming day and any impediments that may delay or hinder their work effort. A "story" is a unit of work that details what needs to be done as well as criteria for proving that what you code actually works. At the end of each sprint you have a team demo of all the stories completed during that sprint and also a retrospective in which the team discusses what they felt worked, what didn't work and could be improved upon and a list of improvements to be incorporated into the next sprint. As such, scrum is a constantly evolving process.

The author takes you through each of these steps one by one is a very clear and readable way. He introduces you to new concepts such as "sprints", "artifacts", "retrospectives" etc. and how these work, who should attend each of the scrum rituals and what should happen in these rituals such as the daily standup and also gives an indicator of how long these rituals should take. Along the way the author introduces you to a hypothetical scrum team and shows what is expected of each member of the team through a typical sprint.

Will you become a scrum ninja after reading this book? Certainly not. Scrum is an evolving process and it will take your team a little while to get used to this new method of working. You will need buy in from not only every member on your scrum team but also from management, the business and executives to make it work.

One thing I was a little surprised about was that the author didn't mention anything about SAFe agile. Scrum in and of itself works for small teams but when you have multiple scrum teams working towards a common goal like you do in larger enterprises, scrum in and of itself tends to break down. You need methods and practices to align each of the scrum teams to standardized sprint lengths, common backlogs, releases etc. which is where SAFe agile comes into play (the Scaled Agile Framework).

If you are new to scrum and wanting to learn what it is, how it works and what its benefits are, you can't go wrong with Scrum, Novice to Ninja. The author has done an excellent job of explaining things and giving examples. Even if you are looking at SAFe agile (of which scrum is the basis) this is an excellent guide to the team level of SAFe.

Dante Alighieri was born in Florence in 1265 and belonged to a noble but impoverished family. His life was divided by political duties and poetry, the most of famous of which was inspired by his meeting with Bice Portinari, whom he called Beatrice,including La Vita Nuova and The Divine Comedy. He died in Ravenna in 1321.

This translation is outstanding!! And the notes are very helpful as well. This text is one of the richest texts I've ever read. Dante is amazing. This is like a Cathedral in verse, or, as someone said, it is like Aquinas' Summa in verse. The fundamental lesson from Dante's Purgatory is not that Purgatory is a literal place (though D. may have thought so) with these literal punishments, but he wants his reader to see the true, destructive, nature of sin, and how it pulls us away from the full pleasure of God's presence, and causes us to seek pleasure in a perverted way in various other things that cannot satisfy. It has a powerful spiritual lesson. It also conveys (to me, a Protestant) the most attractive elements of Catholicism: a rich spirituality that ties all of life together through spiritual practices (liturgy, prayer, sacraments, etc.). This work is truly breathtaking.

I bought these 3 volumes for a course, which was then postponed indefinitely. But since I'd already started reading, I kept at it. I'd tried reading/studying the Divine Comedy before, without success - too dry. The translator of this version is just excellent, presenting the text in a beautiful flowing, readable English.

Valuable Reference

Great reference. I've used the 2nd Ed. of this book until recently. A number of other engineers in my office also use this book for quick reference. The best part about this book is that it also contains the original reference chapter by chapter, so you can back track most of the information stated in this book, and includes equipment by manufacturers that we regularly use. Definitely recommend this book, I'm not aware of any other book as good as this one is.

The original printing was excellent, but the 2nd and 3rd editions both have errors in descriptions and equations (the 2nd edition is MUCH worse), making them suspect at best and utterly useless at worst as a reference guide.

About the Author
Joan Saslow is the author of a number of textbook series for adults and young adults, including "Ready to Go," "Workplace Plus," and "Literacy Plus," She was also the Series Director of "True Colors: An EFL Course for Real Communication," and of "True Voices," an EFL video course. Ms. Saslow's special interest is in distinguishing the needs of the EFL and ESL learner and creating materials appropriate for each. Ms. Saslow has taught in Chile and the United States in a variety of programs, including binational centers, academic programs, intensive language programs, and workplace programs. Ms. Saslow has been an editor, a teacher-trainer, a language learner, and a frequent speaker at gatherings of English teachers throughout the world. Allen Ascher, formerly Director of the International English Language Institute at Hunter College, has been a teacher, teacher-trainer, author, and publisher. He has taught in language and teacher-training programs in both China and the United States. Mr. Ascher has an MA in Applied Linguistics from Ohio University. Mr. Ascher is author of "Think About Editing: A Grammar Editing Guide for ESL Writers," As a publisher, he played a key role in the creation of some of the most widely used materials for adults. Peter Marinker's sympathetic narration is so effective that the listener, gradually and almost reluctantly, begins to feel a measure of compassion for Gloria and Anthony-almost as if they are naive children who can't understand what is happening to them or why. Marinker's rendition of Gloria's soft voice is especially persuasive. By the end, it seems as if Fitzgerald's flawed second novel has been redeemed by audio. For most serious literature collections.

The story of Anthony Patch s pursuit of the beautiful, spoiled Gloria Gilbert and their financial and social decline after marriage seems interminable and rather self-indulgent; the dialog and descriptions, too, are strained. But in this audio edition of Fitzgeralds longest and arguably weakest novel, while actor/narrator Kirby Heyborne initially seems overwhelmed by the overripe verbiage, his understated style ultimately emerges as a perfect match for the callow hero, and he ably conveys the sense of wonder in audiences Fitzgerald surely intended them to feel. For Fitzgerald completists, who will savor this best reading The Beautiful and Damned is likely ever to receive, and for those who might appreciate the work for its portrait of early 20th-century New York. --Library Journal

Extraordinary Writing, What Fitzgerald is Known For

This novel took a while to warm up to but the more I read, the more I became involved in it. Fitzgerald's language is beautiful, so I continued reading just for the extraordinary writing. The book, like The Great Gatsby and Tender is the Night, is populated by people who are wealthy and lost, the famous "Lost Generation." Interestingly, I'm now reading The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton, which was published in 1920, two years before The Beautiful and the Damned, and we're in the same New York City Fitzgerald created but with a different focus. I recommend the book especially to writers because even though there's a tendency and preference to write shorter sentences today, Fitzgerald's fluid writing makes a case for more complex constructions and the use of metaphor and polished narrative description.

As beautiful as can be...

There's a reason F. Scott is one of the GOATs. What he can do in describing a dinner scene is greater than what most authors can do in their entire novels. The words here are beautiful, decadent, oozing style and grace and charm and sensuality in spades. While the pacing is often slow, when you realize that it was done deliberately you begin to enjoy the words upon words F. Scott uses to delve into the minutiae of these people's lives. Anthony and Gloria aren't exactly likable characters, and they weren't meant to be, but in watching their lives fall apart and their dreams become ever more deferred they do manage to extract a tiny bit of sympathy from the reader. If you have some time on your hands and enjoy a little bit of schaudenfreude, it's more than worth a read.

A must-read--before it's made into a movie

Nearly ninety years after its first publication, _The Beautiful and Damned_ is still a shockingly relevant account of the entitlement class, the children of the rich or privileged who don't know how to navigate through life without big money. And, it's a New York City novel--written as only a mid-westerner can. It seems to me that because New Yorkers are too much in the middle of it to see themselves clearly, an intelligent "outsider" like F. Scott Fitzgerald must come along. To write as well as he did, Fitzgerald let the city inhabit him. New York got into his blood, and he recorded it in narrative right down to the dirt under the carpet. Fitzgerald's details lead the reader into the depths of the beautiful and doomed couple, the Gloria-Anthony entanglement, as they are part and parcel of the extremes of poverty and wealth (in the World War I era or the roaring 20s).

I don't know how Fitzgerald knew what he knew about the human psyche, or specifically about how a young man might react when he is good-looking and swimming in money and New York, but Fitz's life at Princeton University among this set of people gave him the environment in which to observe; Fitzgerald supplied the story around which the narrative coheres. Of course, there are autobiographical elements to this novel--a lot of himself and Zelda--but what the literary art requires is critical distance. To put his main characters through some shameful scenes, Fitzgerald had to know what tough love is in the New York City context. He had to put his couple to the test, people who from birth had relied on the "religion" of charm and money. And the author had more than just critical distance: F. Scott had them down right! Every expression, every word. Gloria: "This is life! Who cares for the morrow." And you can see Anthony deciding to have one more drink, his speech becoming slurred, his manners maudlin. While Anthony and Gloria wait for his inheritance, we find out what they're made of.

Most pleasurable about Fitzgerald's craft is his carefully-controlled technique of letting Anthony and Gloria visit hell (the "damned" in the title) while softening the harsh surgery-like light with well-timed, well-handled, lyrical sentences. In a single beautiful line, the passage of the winter sun describes both Fitzgerald's craft and his beautiful couple's descent: Gloria "lay still for a moment in the great bed watching the February sun suffer one last attenuated refinement in its passage through the leaded panes into the room" (p.173). Fitzgerald knew how to show the attenuated and refined way downhill.

One more thing about the craft of writing: Only the omniscient narrator technique--which Fitzgerald employs--can show characters in shameful acts and show what they're thinking, and the circumstances in which they got there, and how they "need" money in order to "survive." I wonder if now, in nearly 2010, this novel is not more important than in 1922. More than ever, _The Beautiful and Damned_ is a national portrait. (I can see how "spending" money could be the "sex" in the novel.)

Advice: Read this novel while in New York, if possible. The first time I read _The Beautiful and Damned_, I was living near 123rd (me, a Westerner!). I looked up every address in the novel (except for the gray house near Cos Cob, Conn.) and got to know New York through this novel. In fact, I could almost pick out their final apartment in Harlem near 127th.
