BJ Handbooks are the Best...the next best finishes in third.

If what you need is not in this book, you probably don't really need it. Bill James has put out the most awesome books on baseball, baseball statistics and the history of baseball since the late 70s when he was self-published. I know. I have most of what he has written. I always get several copies of the BJ Handbook each year because they are available in December and for a baseball fan, they make the greatest Christmas gift. There is nothing else available that has the variety and quality of current statistics besides the BJ Handbook. If you can't find it in this book it is probably not of much value. I love my BJ Handbooks!

Meh-typical upper level or graduate readings

This was a typical collection of articles about politics in Africa for, in my case, graduate school, but could be used in an upper level undergrad course. It has a good range of relatively recent (as of DEC 2015) essays on politics in Africa.

African politics is a depressing parade of internal corruption coupled with external exploitation. While Africa is an amazingly diverse place, the problems are not, but any rational effort to address those problems will have to be as diverse as the continent.

a nice overview of the subject title

This book is a nice overview of the subject title. Not very in-depth but then it's not intended to be. There is some very useful information on the sawmill and lumber industry that should be very useful to someone considering purchasing a portable sawmill or hiring one. If you are looking for chainsaw and felling techniques keep looking as this book gives about as much information on that as is included in your saw's owners manual.

Loved it. Some of the info was unnecessary for me as I work in the tree care industry, and so, already know how to use a chainsaw. But even that info is worth reading again, and especially if one is unfamiliar with that aspect of things.

Take what works, leave the rest

I've mixed feelings on this book. On one hand, it articulates a good framework for the gender generalities that I've observed and for the most part, the author takes care not to paint with a broad brush. In fact, his intro takes care to acknowledge individual differences within that gender spectrum. He also provides a lot of good strategies for peacemaking and reconciliation as well, like the Love Letters. I especially liked the ending chapter on the seasons of love-- it matches what I've seen in long-term relationships.

On the other hand, I definitely felt that much of his advice was very heavily slanted in the man's favor, at significant risk of turning the woman into a doormat. For example, when a man withdraws, the author advises the woman to basically just accept it if the man doesn't want to come out and provide the needed or requested support. This ranges from simple requests like "could you take out the trash" to rather necessary errands: "could you take me to the shop to pick up my car so I can go to work" or "could you pick up our kid from school" (taking examples from the book). If someone resisted doing those last two things, especially on a regular basis, I would seriously question his/her priorities, as well as their suitability as a partner and parent.

I would also regard an unwillingness to provide emotional support as a yellow flag, especially if the onus for emotional maintenance falls on one party-- in this book's case, it's usually the woman. Is the man upset? The woman has to give him space and be caring and accepting, no matter how he responds. Is the woman upset? She has to figure out why she's upset, tell the man she's upset, then sit back and... basically leave the rest up to him. If he becomes caring and accepting in turn, great. If he's still distant, then the onus falls back on her to do more work. In other words, many, if not most, of the author's proposed sacrifices seem to fall on the woman to bear, because men are the way they are (i.e., from Mars). I can't really think of a section in which he says, "men, if a woman responds this way, just accept it-- that's how women are."

Overall, I'd keep and re-read the book for its insights, but it's very much picking out what works and glossing over the rest.

Eye Opener

This book has definitely opened my eyes on not just men but more of myself. I felt like everything that was written in book in regards to women was about me and it just calmed me and helped me realize that I wasn't crazy lol.. It definitely brought in a great perspective on how men could be and saw many issues my partner and I experienced because we didn't understand each others differences and because we weren't understanding we were unable to provide each other what we truly needed.

The book is a very read and makes a lot of great points in my opinion but at the end it is up to every single one of us to put the effort into practice the points that book brings upon and that's the hardest part.. But I will say that I am incredibly happy I read this, as it has made me more aware of myself and my partner and I look forward to practicing and accepting our differences.

Every couple needs this book

This is my second time buying this book. The first one, I loved so much I let someone who I thought could use it, borrow it and they never returned it. I bought it again because its been a few years since I originally read it and my husband decided that he wanted to read it now. It really does have great tips on communicating with your spouse. Men and women clearly think differently and this is a great tool at understanding what they are really trying to communicate.
Communication has always been a great part of our marriage but this book took that to a whole new level. Even though my husband is just now reading it, it still has been valuable in our marriage. Because of this book I am able to understand some of the things he does. Its a great tool for helping any marriage get through tough patches.

Uninspired but a good summary of Flash events if you want a starting point

Flash: Rebirth was decent. The writing was pretty ham-fisted, very preachy without very much nuance. It played fast and loose with the laws of the Speedforce and time travel, while simultaneously making Barry Allen one of the dullest characters in the DC universe (and that's including Superman) - honestly, I came into this series thinking the Barry Allen was one of DCs better characters and left thinking of him as a fast boy scout - honestly, Wally West has more depth. They misused the word "reboot". Rebirth picks up where Crisis left off, all the same plot points and events still occurred, the only difference is that (SPOILER) Nora Allen was murdered by Eobard Thawne and Henry Allen went to prison for it. Other than that small detail, everything in this Flash universe is the same as before, Barry Allen's just magically back and ready to go on more adventures, cause nothing says "I learned the secrets of the universe and ultimate enlightenment" like beating up Captain Cold. All things which might be forgivable if the story didn't culminate in a Steven Moffat Dr. Who-esque Deus Ex Machina where "feeling really strongly about stuff" magics things better again. Despite its heavy-handed "love is the answer" writing style, Rebirth is actually a pretty decent starting off point for anyone who want to get into the Flash and doesn't want to start the series back in the 1950's. It neatly summarizes all the major plot points and events of the past 60 years and sets the stage for the rest of the series.
I think my biggest complaint is with the artwork. While the artist excels at action scenes (there were a couple of really beautiful frames, one being when Barry was running on water, every tiny rivulet of water was lovingly hand drawn, and when Wally and Barry were being torn apart by the Speedforce, very creative, very engaging, lovely panels), he struggles to maintain women's faces. I kid you not, there was a panel where I would NOT have recognizes Iris West if not for context and hair color. And Nora Allen? *shudders at the thought* The artist tried to draw her at a challenging angle and ended up drawing her like a melting crone. The notable exceptions to the artist's "can't consistently draw women" rule are Irey West and Jesse Quick - proving that he is only capable of drawing little girls and super hot chicks.
But I think I take particular issue with the design of Barry Allen. This might be my own personal beef with DC/Marvel comics in general, but how come all the superheroes look professional wrestlers? Like, ok, sure, their superpowers make them mad buff, but what about Barry Allen BEFORE he got his powers (through a ridiculous and apparently very reproducible lab accident involving lightning - coming in through the window? - and a bunch of chemicals, making Barry Allen basically DC's Power Puff Girl). Barry was a CSI geek, who basically lived at the lab trying to solve his Mom's murder, when exactly did he have the time and the inclination to hit the gym and become mad swole? For someone who was supposed to be super slow and a total dork, he looked suspiciously like John Cena. And even after he got his powers, I mean, come on, that's just bad character design. His mad all-over muscles connote super-strength, not super-speed. For Superman I totally get the body-builder physique, but for a Speedster I'd expect him to be streamlined, have a runner's body. It's just lazy artistry: "I'm drawing a superhero? Oh, I clearly should draw him like 90's Arnold Schwarzenegger" without even taking into consideration his a) day job, b) super powers, or c) personality. Very disappointing.

Tl;dr:
The writing is preachy and full of MacGuffins but is a pretty good summary of everything that's happened in the Flash storylines up to this point so you can read from Rebirth on and be pretty clear on events. Art is beautiful on action sequences but suffers in character design, especially that of Barry Allen, and consistency of female characters.

Verdict:
Very bland, but if you want to get into the Flash without starting in 1950, it's a good jumping off point. Also, I think I've decided Wally West is a much more interesting Flash than Barry Allen, if this story is anything to go by.

Barry Allen died in 1986 during the Crisis on Infinite Earths which reduced the size, scale and complexity of the DC Universe into a manageable realm where origins were rewritten for Reagan-era sensibilities. Twenty-three years later, DC comics brought him back, despite the fact that a couple generations of comics readers (I consider a comic-reading generation to emerge every 10 years, instead of the 20 years applied to human generations) only know Wally West as the Flash.

Geoff Johns is an excellent writer and is the major architect of the current DC Universe. He handled Hal Jordan's return with aplomb, but this tale is more scattered and more sloppy. A problem of this book (and Flash books overall) is that there are way to many Flashes and speedsters. This was my first Flash book and I have to say I was very entertained. The story is obviously centered around explaining Barry Allen's return, but it encompasses much more, and sets the stage for the start of New 52. Great Art. Great Writing. Great Book

Decent, although an illegal copy.

I think the majority of the raving reviews are from professors that have lost touch with what it is like to be learning the material for the first time. There are a lot of assumptions of knowledge that is taken for granted. This is much better than most text books as it does not needlessly go into several pages of equations to explain a concept, words and the critical parts of the derivations are used. The equations flow nicely without skipping the critical steps for understanding. Examples would be nice. Another reviewer mentioned the MIT Open Courseware and another site for examples and solutions. You definitely need a solid calculus and differential equations understanding to follow along. If you were unfortunate enough to get apathetic graduate student instruction for those courses, you will be in a world of hurt.

The paperback is an illegal copy from India. You can see wrinkles and folds in the pages, yet the pages are smooth. Some pages have smudges while others have debris printed on them. Everything is readable, so it seems that they have improved the scanning/printing quality from earlier reviews. The copy page states that it has been published in India by arrangement with W.W. Norton & Co, which I am assuming is the original publisher, but there is a piece of black tape over the words "Sales area: India only".
I'm not really complaining as the book was under $15, but it would have been nice to know what I was getting beforehand (I didn't read the reviews as it was required for part of a course) and I'm sure this violates Amazon's sales policies.

This book has no examples

{excuse me if my review does not flow. I'm not very good at connecting paragraphs. I hope what i'm about to say here will be helpful to at least some of you.}

I realize by giving this "classic" a 3 star I'm literally asking to be bashed on. But i think it's only fair to rate a book the way one perceives it.

Before I bought the book, I read the reviews here, there were 10 five star reviews and 1 one star review. The latter one (1 star review) was voted not helpful by several users, and I thought it was just some guy trolling. But now that I've bought the book, and actually read it, I see where the guy was coming from. I think he was way too harsh to give it a 1 star rating though.

Like the title of this review says, there is no examples in this book, nope none. I dunno how other folks learn Physics but I do by looking at few examples, getting an idea of what's going on, and then trying out some problems on my own.

Fortunately, this book does have problems at the end of each chapters...and yes there is an answer key at the end of the book.

Also fortunately, there is the internet. Out of frustration, i started googing for university courses that were using this book and i hoped the professor was nice enough to post some examples, practice problem w/ solutions. Luckily there are a few out there.

There is MIT OpenCourseWare. You can see solution's to some of the problems that were assigned as a homework in MIT's Vibration and Waves class. Furthermore, they also have documented exams with solutions. University of Michigan also used this book in Physics 340 and they have exams and homework w/ solutions documented online.

My professor was selectively teaching from this book, at one point he was in chapter 7 at another he was in chapter 4 and back and forth. So it was a bit of a hassle to look over these webpages and study only those things that I needed.

Apart from the fact that this book has no examples, it is everything the 5 star reviewers have said.

P.P.S. Vibrations and Waves (Manchester Physics Series)is a 2009 book published by Wiley. It actually has worked out examples. Also, at the end of the book, it provides worked out solutions (not answer key but solutions) to end of chapter problems. Disappointed

The listing said it was in excellent condition with supplemental materials still in tact. The H&R Block and Checkpoint were there, but no Cengage Access code. That is the main reason I purchased the book. Now I have to purchase the Cengage code separately because it is required for my course. It's still better than buying the brand new book and the text itself is in good shape, but I really had my hopes up for that code after reading the description. I figured it was too good to be true.

One of the better books

It's hard to love a book about taxation but this is a well organized book with helpful graphics. I have found the information to be quite accurate. The one or two times I didn't agree, I checked other sources (IRS) and the book is indeed correct. I'm keeping my copy as a reference for future use, even though I know tax code will change. It's to be a good reference for the basics.
