The contrivance of this leadership handbook is a story-within-a-story: when a newbie business reporter snags an interview with a powerful CEO, the businessman takes the journalist under his wing and reveals the seven secrets he learned from his own mentor many years ago. These "secrets" turn out to be the very same principles that drive other leadership books: respect your employees and they will follow you; know their hopes and personalities; instill a sense of group identification and trust; give 100% from the heart at all times. What’s unique about this leadership manual is its view that "people are a lot like sheep," leading to an overarching sheep metaphor that drives the entire book. In the chapter on direction, for example, the mentor urges shepherd-managers to lead with gentle nudges of the staff before employing the heavy-handed, painful prodding of the rod. The chapter on company identification talks about the need for "tagging" the sheep so they are instantly recognizable as a cohesive flock. And who knew that the phrase "pull the wool over his eyes" originated in actual shepherding techniques?

About the Author
Dr. Kevin Leman is an Internationally known Christian psychologist, speaker, and New York Times bestselling author of fifty books including Have a New Kid by Friday, The Birth order Book, and Making Your Children Mind Without Losing Yours. A master communicator, Dr. Leman is a frequent guest on hundreds of radio and TV shows such as The View, Oprah, Today, Fox & Friends, and Focus on the Family. He and his wife, Sande, live in Tucson, Arizona. They are the parents of five children and two grandchildren.
William Pentak has twenty-two years of proven success in revitalizing under-performing organizations. An author, columnist, pastor, consultant and speaker, he has traveled across the nation delivering keynote addresses and seminars. An MBA from the University of Texas at Austin, William was one of the last hires made by Enron before the company imploded in bankruptcy. He currently works in External Communications at Reliant Energy in Houston, Texas.

Must Read

I had to get this book and read it for a class and let me tell you...This is the first 'required read' that I enjoyed wholeheartedly. I learned so much and it excited me to go out and practice what it teaches with my co-workers and boss. I read this book in two sittings, it's not long and it's an easy read. Even if you aren't required to read this but are considering it, I would definitely encourage you to do so. I would encourage teachers to make students read this book because it has so much to give and we need more people like this book teaches in the world.

Helpful For Leaders in Business and Ministry

As a pastor, I benefited greatly by reading this book. I have read many of Dr. Leman's books before, so I wasn't expecting this kind of format. This is a parable of a professor/shepherd who shares with one of his MBA students principles of managing people by introducing him to his flock of sheep. The principles in the parable will help those in leadership positions in business as well as in ministry. The book is quite short and can be read in several hours.
Principles in the parable include knowing your flock, engaging them on a regular basis, building trust with your followers, keeping your flock well informed, protecting them, using persuasion rather than coercision, helping them when they get in trouble, being willing to pay the price of leadership, and developing a heart for your flock.

A must read for those entering into management positions

One of the best books I have ever read on managing people as people, leading people, not driving them, caring for where they are at, protecting them and being with them. I would suggest strongly anyone who is entering into any management position, religiously or otherwise, to make this book a must read on a continuous basis.
