Helpful when tutoring Adult Basic Education Students in Math

This text is one of several mathematics texts available at Milwaukee Achiever Literacy Services, where I am a volunteer tutor. Achieving TABE Success in Mathematics is the text that my students and I use regularly. Our reasons are: 1. A single concept is presented on most pages. At the top of the page there is a short explanation that is usually clear enough for the students to start doing exercises on their own. Then they ask questions about specific exercises, and I listen to their thinking and answer their questions. ( We often cannot do this when we use other texts. Students end up spending more time listening and less time doing exercises.) 2. Inexpensive secondhand copies of the Achieving TABE Success books are available through various websites, including the Amazon website. These can be purchased so that students can use them at home. 3. Many students are required to take the TABE test. The Achieving TABE Success in Mathematics Series is specifically designed to prepare students to pass the TABE test.

Achieving TABE Success in Mathematics TABE 9 & 10 Level D is one of four Achieving TABE Success in Mathematics texts (Levels E,M,D, A). All of these books are designed to help students succeed on the TABE math test. All contain some of the same content and explanations. More difficult topics such as dividing decimals,solving algebraic equations,negative numbers are included in the higher level books (A is the highest level book.D is the second highest.) The level D book is the one that I have used the most.

Another volunteer tutor commented on the original version of this review and recommended the Number Power books. I also recommend both series of Number Power books. One series (Number Power level E Introductory, Number Power level M Intermediate 1, Number Power level D Intermediate level 2, and Number Power level A Advanced) is very similar to the Achieving TABE Success in Mathematics series. (Many of the exercises are the same.) I think that I could use this series the same way that I now use the Achieving TABE Success series. The other Number Power series has nine volumes on different topics (Volume 1 is entitled Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying and Dividing, Volume 2 is entitled Fractions, Decimals, and Per Cents,etc.) I find supplemental exercises in this second, longer series.

I am currently using the Achieving TABE Success in Mathematics level M and level D books to help a student improve his score on the Accuplacer Arithmetic Exam. I have used the Achieving TABE Success series in Math to help prepare a student for the old GED exam. Now students at Milwaukee Achiever do not prepare to take the new GED exam. Instead they must take exams to show that they are prepared for a Wisconsin HSED class at Milwaukee Achiever. ( At this point, I think that I could use the Achieving TABE Success in Mathematics books to help students prepare for their Wisconsin HSED class. I think that tutors would have to use texts such as the SCORE BOOST series, the Kaplan GED 2015 Strategies, Practice, and Review Book, or the Common Core Mathematics, Basics to help students prepare for the new GED exam.)

Consider These Alternatives

At this time it is difficult to get reasonably-priced copies of this text. One alternative is Number Power Introductory Level E, which is also TABE-correlated and has the same helpful format. But the Number Power Introductory Level E text and this text share a drawback: They do not cover topics which the TABE and Acuplacer Arithmetic Exams cover: percents, most of fractions, multiplication and division of decimals. The best alternatives to this text are the intermediate, levels M and D texts from both the Achieving TABE Success in Math Series and the Number Power Series.

A great math book for tabe students

I am in a trade school working towards a new career...
I passed most of my required sections, but did bad in the math section.
This book is currently helping me, along with my teachers pamphlets...
I hope to pass my tabe test, math section within the next 3 months...
Contemporary has also a geometry book too, which I also ordered... but this book lays a great foundation for basic math..

Essential historical deck

The Etteilla deck dates from the late 18th century, and was the first Tarot deck specifically intended for occult use. Prior to that, Tarot decks were primarily used for card games like Tarocchi, a card game similar to bridge. Antoine Court de Gébelin was the first person to promote the theory, based on pure imagination, that the Tarot had been developed in Ancient Egypt, and was later brought to Europe by the Roma people (better known by the pejorative term "Gypsies"). This ignored the fact that the earliest mention of Tarot was in a church document listing several types of prohibited games, dating from the late 14th century, and that the earliest surviving Tarot decks, which still exist today and whose provenance is unassailable, were painted for several Italian noble families, like the Visconti Sforza in the 15th century. This was before Roma people, who came from India and not Egypt, arrived in Europe. In addition, Roma fortune-telling uses ordinary playing cards, not the Tarot deck.

This deck was the first one to capitalize on the new "mystery" surrounding Tarot cards, and was a significant change from the typical Tarot de Marseilles decks available at the time. Developed by wigmaker-turned-occultist Jean-Baptiste Alliette, who reversed his last name to become "Etteilla," the deck was unabashedly oriented toward fortune-telling. Each card has the primary and reversed meaning clearly marked, and the accompanying booklet provides lists of "predictions" for each one, the type of thing that was brilliantly parodied in Edward Gorey's The Fantod Pack, which manages to be both disconcerting and irreverent at the same time.

The cards of the Etteilla deck are numbered 1 to 78, leaving no option for alternate ordering. The first 21 cards correspond roughly to the Major Arcana, although in no particular order, and with several differences. The first card is labeled "Etteilla" and reversed "The Male Consultant," and depicts a sun shining through clouds. The second card, entitled, "Enlightenment," has an image vaguely reminiscent of the "Sun" card of a standard Tarot deck. Number 3, "Discussion," resembles the "Moon" card; others, like number 7, "Support," show a number of sea animals and don't correspond to any standard Major. This pattern continues until number 22, which begins the four suits of the Minor Arcana, ordered from King down to Ace; the numbered cards with the exception of the Two card in each suit are pips. The Twos are illustrated with small figures, reminiscent of the decorative drawings in the Minchiate of Etruria - more than just the requisite number of suit signs, but not as graphic as the Rider-Waite or the Sola-Busca deck that many of Smith's illustrations were based on. Number 78 is entitled "Madness" with an image similar to the standard "Fool" card - if one views the deck as a circle, this could also be the first card.

The instruction book doesn't bother with "spreads;" it recommends shuffling the deck, then taking five cards at a time and turning the fifth face upward until 33 to 45 cards are revealed; how this would be done with a 78 card deck without going through it multiple times is not explained. Predictions are revealed by the seventh, fourteenth, twenty-first, and so on. The card titles described in the book appear to have no connection with the actual cards; the number 2 "Enlightenment" card in the book is "Hiram Freemasonry," and number 3 "Discussion" is "Order of «Mopses»." This disconnect with the cards continues through the book.

Physically, the cards are printed on stiff stock, measure about 5" by 2 ½" with square corners, and the back is a simple grid pattern.

Today, "fortune-telling" is considered a debasement of Tarot, which is seen as more appropriately used for "guidance" or "personal development." The idea of crassly predicting someone's fate is inappropriate, as if one should be above petty concerns such as knowing whether a business deal is a wise one or if one is making a good choice in marriage. We should instead strive to be "spiritually advanced," which will lead us to make the correct decisions in life ourselves, without need for direction from any external source. Etteilla's audience was under no such illusions, and he may have been the first person in history to make his living by giving Tarot readings. While this deck may not appeal to a modern person for that purpose, it's nevertheless of interest as a significant milestone in the development of Tarot.

It really helped me through a pretty depressing period of my life journey

I was given this publication by a friend. At that time it consisted of a set of 12 tapes in a cassette format. I was somewhat disappointed in the CD version because much of the information was deleted. It really helped me through a pretty depressing period of my life journey. Over the years I've shared the tapes with other individuals. Some also found the information mutually beneficial. Thanks....

A supplement......

I bought this tape when it was first published. And at that time, while I was in the process of "searching", I did not fully understand the concept(s) that Deepak Chopra was explaining. However, since then I have read and listened to other books / CDs by Deepak Chopra, Wayne Dyer, Caroline Mysse etc. This morning on the way to work, I listened with new "ears" to this tape and find it to be a good supplement/reinforcement to "Creating Affluence", "The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success", "The Way of the Wizard", "Manifest Your Destiny", "The Power of Intention" and "Ask And You Shall Receive".

I am ordering the CD and will record it on my ipod so that I can listen to it whenever and wherever I am.

I have been listening and learning with these types of tapes for over 10 years, it makes 128 bearable in the AM!
