Rena's Promise: A Story of Sisters in Auschwitz, by Rena Kornreich Gelissen, Heather Dune Macadam

An expanded edition of the powerful memoir about two sisters' determination to survive during the Holocaust featuring new and never before revealed information about the first transport of women to Auschwitz

Sent to Auschwitz on the first Jewish transport, Rena Kornreich survived the Nazi death camps for over three years. While there she was reunited with her sister Danka. Each day became a struggle to fulfill the promise Rena made to her mother when the family was forced to split apart--a promise to take care of her sister.

One of the few Holocaust memoirs about the lives of women in the camps, Rena's Promise is a compelling story of the fleeting human connections that fostered determination and made survival a possibility. From the bonds between mothers, daughters, and sisters, to the links between prisoners, and even prisoners and guards, Rena's Promise reminds us of the humanity and hope that survives inordinate inhumanity.

From Publishers Weekly
Imagining that, by volunteering for a work camp, she would somehow be protecting her family from the Nazis, Rena, at age 17, put on her best clothes, left her fiance and the Polish village of Tylicz in the Carpathian Mountains and was sent off to Auschwitz. Presently, her sister Danka arrived, as did cousins, schoolmates and neighbors. As a child, she had promised her mother to look after her baby sister, and that promise obsessed her throughout her incarceration in the camp. It gave her reason to survive, so that one day she could bring Danka safely home. How they escaped starvation, beatings, the crematorium, the medical experiments of the notorious Josef Mengele and survived the end of the war is all recounted here in this spirited survivor's testament, written with freelancer Macadam. After the war, Rena married a Red Cross worker and emigrated to the U.S., following her sister.

From Library Journal
Gelissen, who was on the first Jewish transport to Auschwitz, describes in this account the constant struggle for survival in the camp. She soon learns there were no guarantees. Rena's motivation came strongly from a promise to her parents to keep her younger sister, Danka, safe. Her account describes the relentless specter of death while at the same time showing how prisoners would risk their lives to smuggle medicine, clothes, and food to other prisoners. Because Rena was an early prisoner in Auschwitz, she describes some of the confusion at the beginning and the realization of what was really happening to the Jewish people. Helpful features of the book include historical notes and a section describing the fate of the people the sisters knew. This memoir captures the horror of Auschwitz in a clear way that helps the reader understand the atrocities perpetrated there. Recommended for Holocaust collections.

Review
"Rena’s Promise is written with simplicity and grace. . . . The overwhelming feeling upon finishing is one of triumph: It is still possible to find selflessness and human connection among people living in a place of relentless horror."—Los Angeles Times Book Review

“A poignant and important act of remembrance.” —Sir Martin Gilbert, author of The Holocaust: The Human Tragedy

“An extraordinary book, vividly written and generously told. You will not easily forget Rena Kornreich and her sister Danka. Nor should you. Harrowing as it often is, this is less a tragedy than a love story. By turns soul-wrenching, inspiring, and heartbreaking, this is a tale that should live long beyond the wonderful woman who inspired it.” —Alexandra Fuller, author of Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight

“Through her actions during and after the Shoah, Rena Kornreich Gelissen ensured that out of the darkest night, the light of the survivors and their memory remained. Faced with destruction, she and the Jewish people survived.” —Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks

“Rena’s Promise went with us on the Zen Peacemakers’ first pilgrimage to Auschwitz in 1996. On our first night together, one of our monks shared a simple message of love from Rena to us. Her message changed our lives.” —Peter Matthiessen, author of In Paradise

“One of the most accurate accounts, and the only account of the first women’s camp in Auschwitz. This is a book historians will refer to for years to come.” —Irena Strezlecka, director, Auschwitz Museum of Women, Oswiecim, Poland

This is a book filled with melancholy wisdom and bitter artistry.... A miraculous message...a voice which we must heed and honor. --Mike Fink, Rhode Island Jewish Herald "A personal story of courage....[Rena's] first-person account is an illustration of the power of love, even in the face of the Nazi killing machine." --Paul Nowell, Associated Press "Deeply moving." --Dena Taylor, San Francisco Chronicle

Gripping! Unforgettable.
By Jasminet
Seldom do I read a book where I want it to go on longer. I'm usually ready to move on. Knowing Rena survived made it easier to read because I grew to admire and love her. A single potato peel found on the ground was a mouthwatering bit of food and she saved half for her sister! Incredible. What an engaging story.
How can a person survive all she did? Would I have had the ability to endure all that heartache? I am afraid of the answer.
My most touching moment was when she felt her Mama by her at the end. There's no doubt in my mind, she really was helping Rena get through those last days of captivity. After all the months of starvation, to be forced to march across the frozen land, stepping over bodies in the road, and still worrying about others,
I was humbled by her amazing spirit.
RIP, Rena and all those amazing people who ended up in the clutches of the Nazis, some for years, some for minutes.
Never will I forget them!

Once in a while a story comes along that is so amazing . . .
By webdevgirl
Once in a while a story comes along that is so amazing and so eloquently told that it takes your breath away. This is one such story. I could not put it down. I've been a student of the Holocaust for nearly 40 years -- since I saw my first documentary on TV at the age of 16 and set out on a quest to understand why and how such an event could happen. This story is unique in that it adeptly illustrates someone who manages to maintain their sense of humanity despite all invitations to do otherwise. There is a soft strength to Rena and a level of caring that the world is so in need of today. Rena, wherever you are now, thank you for your courage in telling your story and thank you, Heather, for the love and care you gave and continue to give to Rena, Danke, and the others through your dedication to and loving care of their story. I, for one, will never forget.

Survival and Compassion
By Dorcas Nepple
Rena's Promise is most definitely the best memoir I have ever read on the Holocaust. Rena's story shows how compassion for her sister gave her the courage and will to live, no matter what harrowing circumstances she encountered. Having arrived on the first transport of women in 1942, Rena survived more than three years in the Auschwitz-Berkenau concentration camp--a feat that amazed even her captors. The facts are researched and well-documented. From initially thinking how bad can a labor camp possibly be (after all she was raised on a farm and used to hard work), to the dawning realization that this was hell on earth, I was riveted by Rena's courage, cleverness, and most of all her compassion for her sister, Danke. How Rena and her sister managed to survive starvation, beatings, illness, elude Dr. Mengele, and even the infamous death march in 1945, is a story I could not put down and not forget.

This review would not be complete without acknowledging the beautiful writing of the woman who helped her write her memoir, Heather Dune Macadam.

A good book
By Dr. Selcuk SAYAN
I knew this book before and having been involved with basic design in Landscape Architecture I decided to have it. The book is some older but still have considerations for a transition from hand-work to a digital world. I like it. The copy I purchased through Amazon is in a good condition in terms of price and quality balance. Thank you.

I needed this book for one of my college classes and the Amazon price was almost 3/4 cheaper then in the schools book store. This book was only used for about 3-4 months and from what I saw from the textbook... it was great. I learned a lot and I might keep it around just in case I need it for a future class. But overall, I give it an A...

In recent years beekeepers have had to face tremendous challenges, from pests such as varroa and tracheal mites and from the mysterious but even more devastating phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). Yet in backyards and on rooftops all over the world, bees are being raised successfully, even without antibiotics, miticides, or other chemical inputs.More and more organically minded beekeepers are now using top-bar hives, in which the shape of the interior resembles a hollow log. Long lasting and completely biodegradable, a topbar hive made of untreated wood allows bees to build comb naturally rather than simply filling prefabricated foundation frames in a typical box hive with added supers.

Top-bar hives yield slightly less honey but produce more beeswax than a typical Langstroth box hive. Regular hive inspection and the removal of old combs helps to keep bees healthier and naturally disease-free.

Top-Bar Beekeeping provides complete information on hive management and other aspects of using these innovative hives. All home and hobbyist beekeepers who have the time and interest in keeping bees intensively should consider the natural, low-stress methods outlined in this book. It will also appeal to home orchardists, gardeners, and permaculture practitioners who look to bees for pollination as well as honey or beeswax.

ForeWord Reviews-

"Farmers who seek a guide to hive maintenance told through a thoughtful personal narrative will benefit from the discussion of this topbar style of beekeeping. The first-person style of the book allows a window into the practices of the topbar beekeeper while conveying a wealth of knowledge and a well-researched comparison of hive practices. The book is appropriate for beginning beekeepers as well as those experienced but looking for information on natural and organic beekeeping practices. The book’s ten sections discuss optimal practices of an organic beekeeper juxtaposed with discussion of industry standard practices and their drawbacks. Each section contains stories of the authors’ successes and failures as well as diagrams and pictures to explain everything from hive design to plant species for optimal pollination. Whether the reader is looking to start their own hive or simply increase their knowledge of honeybees, the book provides interesting and detailed discussions of all aspects of raising them. Crowder and Harrell offer not only advice on how to get started, but an in-depth discussion of all aspects of keeping a hive, from bee capture, breeding, and selection to honey processing. They have crafted a book that is both informative and engaging, filled with introspective advice and practical knowledge."

Publisher's Weekly-

"Cave drawings show beekeepers “smoking” their hives, preparing for insect interaction. Today’s mass-produced honey relies mostly on the venerable Langstroth method of beekeeping, which has produced plenty of honey―but also has introduced plenty of chemicals into the process―through the years. Top-bar hives, named for the bars that run across their tops, are popular with bee beginners even though they produce less honey than Langstroth hives. But this account, the culmination of Crowder and Harrell’s 40 years of top-bar beekeeping adventures, shows the reader their method’s advantages: it avoids antibiotics, miticides, and other chemicals inherent to the conventional process. Crowder and his wife, Harrell, leave no comb unharvested as they take the top-bar aspirant from bee basics (stings, smoke, and hive transfers) through hive management (comb removal and feeding) to beneficial, and profitable, byproducts like beeswax. For those a bit lukewarm to the swarm, the book gives a fascinating insight into bees’ elaborate organizational and geometry skills, and it may even make one reconsider buying mass-marketed, chemical-laced honey."

"Reading Top-Bar Beekeeping reminds me of the classes I took with Les Crowder several years ago. He's a man who truly knows whereof he speaks, who has the gift of communicating with his small friends, the bees, and sharing his understanding with us. . . . This is the one book on beekeeping that I will recommend to my permaculture students."--Scott Pittman, Director, Permaculture Institute USA

"This is an excellent guide for hobby beekeepers who wish to keep bees using top-bar hives. Drawing on his more than 30 years of beekeeping experience in New Mexico, author Les Crowder describes in detail the special comb management techniques that this low-cost, but relatively intensive, form of beekeeping requires. Top-Bar Beekeeping also provides an eloquent appeal for beekeepers to make care, respect, and reverence the foundation of their relationships with the bees."--Thomas D. Seeley, Cornell University; author of Honeybee Democracy and The Wisdom of the Hive

"This book presents practical advice, gained from first-hand experience, on the organic management of top bar hives. This book will serve as an excellent guide to the ever-growing number of beekeepers that utilizes less intrusive management schemes such as top bar hives. Thanks to Les and Heather for their efforts to provide sound advice on natural ways to keep bees."--Dr. Jeff Pettis, USDA-ARS

About the Author
Les Crowder has devoted his entire adult life to the study and care of honeybees. Dedicated to finding organic and natural solutions for problems commonly treated with chemicals, he designed his own top-bar hives and set about discovering how to treat disease and genetic weaknesses through plant medicine and selective breeding. He has been a leader in his community, having served as New Mexico's honeybee inspector and president of the New Mexico Beekeepers Association. He is an avid storyteller and has spoken annually at the NM Organic Farm Conference for over fifteen years. Les is also a certified teacher and enjoys teaching children Spanish and science.

Heather Harrell moved to New Mexico in 1996 from her home state of Vermont to pursue her masters degree in Eastern Classics, having long had an interest in the art of meditation and yoga and a yearning to pursue a career in academia. Her love of nature soon had her pursuing a life as an organic farmer, focusing on flowers, then medicinal herbs. Over time, and through her work with honeybees, she has moved her focus to the study of multi-use permaculture plantings, which support a diverse network of interrelationships in the natural world. Along with a wide variety of vegetables, she grows medicinal herbs, which offer nectar and pollen to pollinator species. She is very interested in how soil biology is affected by using biodynamic methods of planting, and is currently studying compost teas incorporating various types of manures and plant materials.

Great Book for "Newbees"
By Ginger
My husband and I built our own Kenyan Top Bar Hive and installed a package of 3 pounds of worker bees and one queen. Everything went well and after checking the hive two weeks later, we found the bees were already making comb and the queen was already laying eggs! Cool! We sat back on our laurels then, and waited to see what what happen. Then we got this book and read that we were supposed to be checking on the bees for several potential problems. Who knew that the bees can run amuck and make crooked combs that run into another? Good thing we read this book! We now use our book as our definitive reference guide. It's easy for us "newbees" :) to understand and there are good diagrams for bar rotations and the reasons for doing it.

Not everything you need to know to get started but a recommended read
By YoDaddy
Let's get this out of the way. This is not a one-source guide for a total newbie so one would want some supplemental information sources or a good mentor. I am a total beekeeping noob - I've handled other people's bees but have none of my own yet. I have needed other books and online sources but I'm glad I own this book.

The book makes a strong argument for organic beekeeping practice and rearing your own local queens. Much of this could be done with traditional box hives as well but the simplicity and low cost of the top-bar was seductive enough to persuade me. The sections on top-bar hive management and queen rearing were both very well done. If the the section on actual hive construction seems thin that's because it really is that simple. If you feel you need more detail or want a hive with some visual appeal there are plenty of free plans available online.

What I got out of the book was
1) Colony Collapse is probably the result of commercial beekeeping and agriculture practice rather than something that just happened randomly
2) I can effectively make stronger, disease resistant bees with organic methods and selective queen rearing.
3) Breeding strong disease resistant bees is not only good for me but good for beekeeping and agriculture in general. Me maintaining a couple of highly medicated hives with purchased queens does absolutely nothing to help the greater imperiled bee population.
4) I can do this and I don't need to drop $1000 up front just to get started. After evaluating money saved by not purchasing a Langstroth hive I'm redirecting my start up funds to better equipment - smoker, veil, etc.

Bees for Your Backyard and Homestead the Top Bar Way Supports Deep Nature Connection!
By Palikaji
I've been a Backyard Bee Guardian using organic and ecological practices for 15 years and mentoring others to support this amazing mediterranean honeybee in their backyard havens for over 10 years! This book is ESSENTIAL for success in Top Bar Bee Guardianship for new and experienced TOP Bar enthusiasts and will aid my teaching and mentoring greatly. And... by reading this book before you choose whether to do Top Bars or Langstroths may help you decide that Top Bar Hives are the right choice for Homesteaders and Backyarders!

While I still teach how to run a Langstroth HIve like a wild or top bar hive more or less, allowing bees to draw their own comb - allowing bees to swarm (yes I believe in contributing to strong local genetic variation and acclimation by allowing some of the swarms to get away and attempt to make it in the wilds of Santa Cruz) - I have begun to initiate new Bee Guardians into the magic of Top Bars because ultimately I believe that Langstroth HIves are designed primarily for the ease of industrial monocrop and chemical based bee manipulations and that Top Bar Hives are designed more for the ease of the bees.

Yes you can get more honey with Langstroth Hives, but for Backyarders there are other inspiring goals and ultimately a TOP BAR HIVE with a viewing window supports less non essential interventions by overly manipulative humans and supports the shape of the colony's skeleton (the comb) to mimick what they do in the wild for example.

Honey production is not my driving purpose in serving Honey Bees. I keep bees to be of service to the Greather Good and the gifts I recieve are superior fruit and food production on my homestead, contribution to locally acclimated genetic diversity, more beauty and food in my local landscape and enough honey for my family needs and some special gifitng occasionally. I'm not in it to produce commercial crops of honey, and definitely not supportive of commericial pollination practices of forcing honey bees to forage on wastelands of chemically fertilized GMO crops with dead soil, no diversity of plant life and the bees themselves are constantly dowsed in antibiotics, fungicides, miticides etc. Langstroth HIves have a dirty history - not their fault but the whole point of their design was to serve exploitation of Nature's gifts through mass production in the commercial food industry.

Choosing Top Bar HIves is for me part of my recognition that the commercial food system is broken and Slow Food and Go Local approaches are one of our most important empowered actions for healing the rift between humans and Nature.

This book is well organized, knowledge heavy and is the first to clearly articulate methods for rotating blackened brood comb out and supporting the reduction of the colony to the winter ball to the best placement in the Top Bar Hive. The authors are writing from experience and have great photos through out the book and explain clearly, seasonal skillsets for Top Bar Success as well as how to raise your own queens.

Top Bar HIves are gaining alot of popularity for Homestead and Backyard Honey Bee Guardians - no heavy 50-60 lb supers to lift, less chance of bee stings, the best designs include windows for observation, they get easier and easier with more experience, and from a design standpoint are more in alignment with a BEE CENTRIC model of connecting with Nature in a way that nurtures us and heals our sense of separation from Nature and listens to what Nature wants rather than imposes our presumptions on it.

Do not start Top Bar Beekeeping or Beekeeping at all without having this book in your Bee Guardianship tool kit, your night table, in your backpack, on your favorite reading chair. Its essential for your success in SERVING the BEES and Nature!

With so much gratitude for the bees, and human beings who approach them with curiosity, respect and a service attitude!! YES!

The Crossroads of Should and Must: Find and Follow Your Passion, by Elle Luna

Who hasn’t asked the question “How can I find and follow my true calling?” Elle Luna frames this moment as “standing at the crossroads of Should and Must.” “Should” is what we feel we ought to be doing, or what is expected of us. “Must” is the thing we dream of doing, our heart’s desire. And it was her own personal journey that inspired Elle Luna to write a brief online manifesto that, in a few short months, has touched hundreds of thousands of people who’ve read it or heard Elle speak on the topic. Now Ms. Luna expands her ideas into an inspirational, highly visual gift book for every recent graduate, every artist, every seeker, every career changer.

The Crossroads of Should and Must has a universal message—we get to choose the path between Should and Must. And it gives every reader permission to embrace this message. It’s about the difference between jobs, careers, and callings. The difference between going to work and becoming one with your work. Why knowing what you want is often the hardest part. It gives eye-opening techniques for reconnecting with one’s inner voice, like writing your own obituary (talk about putting life in perspective). It talks about the most common fears of choosing Must over Should—money, time, space, and the ultimate fear: total vulnerability—and shores up our hesitation with inspiring stories of and quotes from the artists and writers and thinkers who’ve faced their own crossroads of Should and Must and taken the leap. It explains the importance of mistakes, of “unlearning,” of solitude, of keeping moving, of following a soul path.

Presented in four chapters—The Crossroads, The Origin of Should, Must, and The Return—inspired by the hero’s journey outlined by Joseph Campbell, The Crossroads of Should and Must guides us from the small moment, discovering our Must, to the big moment—actually doing something about it, and returning to share our new gifts with the world.

It was a Tuesday around 7A.M. when I clicked “Publish” on an essay on Medium.com titled “The Crossroads of Should & Must.”

We share things online. Every day. All the time. But something about this thing was different. So different, that in a few short weeks, it was tweeted to over five million people and read by over a quarter million readers.

“Drop everything you’re doing and read this right now,” one woman posted. “This article changed my life,” wrote another. “I was about to send it to all of my employees,” wrote one CEO, “but I assumed that a third of them would quit if they read it. But you know what? If they don’t want to be here, I want them to quit—so I sent it.”

The emails poured in. The tweets lit up my phone. The article spread through the Web in a flash, and then flashed some more. It continued to shine and grow and, well, here we are. I decided to write this book because of the people who shared their stories with me and the pain and courage I felt in their struggle. Women in their thirties. Men in their twenties. A high school senior. Fathers. A widow. Single moms. Millionaires who were poor. Poor people who were millionaires. Teachers. Lawyers. A musician disguised as a lawyer. A poet who loved to drive a city bus. Women who didn’t want kids. Fathers who wanted to raise kids. People who felt stuck in their jobs and people who were so desperately grateful to have a job at all.

The pain cut across gender, location, and age. And at its essence, the pain was this—

All too often, we feel that we are not living the fullness of our lives because we are not expressing the fullness of our gifts.

I heard from people who seemed willing to do anything to make their dissatisfaction go away, but they didn’t know what to do. I wrote this book to share what I have found most helpful in navigating my own journey, as well as what has been most helpful for the people I met. However, you’re not holding a book of answers, because only you know those; you’re holding a collection of the most effective questions I encountered along the way. Think of these pages as a series of doorways designed so that you can choose which way your journey will go.

These pages are a pep talk to honor that voice inside of you that says you have something special to give. It’s a reminder that while there is no map for where you’re going, many have traveled this road before. It’s permission to unlearn everything you’ve ever been told you should do in order to learn what you must.

It’s 11:55 a.m. on a Thursday, and I’m clicking “Save” on this document one final time before it begins its adventure into the world. In my own life, I’ve found that things appear at the ideal time. Not before. And not after. Consider the possibility that this book made its way into your hands because you wanted it to. Because a part of you has seen a crossroads in your life, and you’re ready for the journey ahead. I am humbled and grateful that these words will find their way from me to you, somehow, in some way, at just the right time. Thank you for being a part of this wild and wondrous journey. From one fellow traveler to another—Godspeed.

getting to "must" - for artists
By Arnold
I don’t usually read self-help books, but the title of “Should and Must” spoke to a personal dilemma I was having at the time it came out. To some extent, the book helped me clarify my thinking. It gave me encouragement for some of my decisions and forced me to reconsider others. To some extent, that’s probably the most important thing I can say in this review. Still, I had some other thoughts about the book after thinking about it for a while.

For those who hadn’t read Elle’s essay, “The Crossroads of Should and Must” is about helping people overcome societal obligations and other barriers in order to achieve their passion. I don’t think the book breaks any new psychological ground, but what’s distinctive about it is the style. This isn’t a book filled with prose. Instead, it’s actually a piece of art. Every page has unique drawings, colorful script, markings, etc. It really drives home the optimistic message and definitely makes it more memorable.

That said, the very design of the book tells you much about its intended audience – artists. Elle seems to be talking primarily to struggling artists. The examples she mentions are Picasso, Philip Glass, John Grisham, etc. Many of her ideas for finding your “must” involve paints, paper, etc. Computers are bad. If your “must” is to become a doctor, a president, etc., you’ll probably find that this book doesn’t speak to you as much. For me, I was looking at a writing career, so I probably fell within the target audience, but barely.

I was also a bit surprised that, aside from the author’s own story, all of the examples in the book were of famous people. I know for me that one of the most intimidating aspects of “getting to must” is the recognition that I’ll probably never measure up the greats in my calling. Why try if you can only pale in comparison? I know as an aspiring artist I wouldn’t want Picasso as a standard. Instead, I’d like to learn more about how ordinary people found their “must.” What does it mean to have found your calling but to not become a celebrity in your field? That’s much more relatable and in many ways manageable.

Quibbles aside, this book did help me. I’m going to take some of its advice to heart and hopefully start finding my calling. I don’t know if it’ll work, but I can recommend this as a short, easy read that might change your life.

The book I didn't know I needed.
By Evan Le
Heard about Elle Luna through Chase Jarvis's 30 Days of Genius video series. Her personality was captivating, so I wanted to check out her book.

The book is an art piece. A very useful one at that, as it got me thinking about a lot of things in my life -- from my fantasies to my jobs/careers/callings. I think going through these exercises are so helpful to understanding who you are.

That's one of life's joys, right? Discovering who you are and what you're capable of.

Though I felt it was overly spiritual at times, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I think this book applies to creatives and pretty much anyone whether you consider yourself an artist or not. Give it a read! Maybe Elle will help you find your Must.
