[Read by Michael Edwards]

***#10 on National Review's List of the 100 Best Nonfiction Books of the Century***

Milton Friedman argues that the appropriate role of competitive capitalism occurs when the majority of our economic activity flows through private enterprise within a free market environment. This is unequivocally the most effective device for achieving economic freedom, as well as the necessary condition in which political freedom can be attained. Friedman's arguments are positively bold, enlightening, and impacting. Among the specific topics he addresses are ''The Control of Money,'' ''Fiscal Policy,'' ''Capitalism and Discrimination,'' and ''Social Welfare Measures.''

Review
''Edwards is a straightforward narrator, and the essays lend themselves to reading aloud because they began as lectures.'' --Talking Book Review

From the Inside Flap
Selected by the Times Literary Supplement as one of the "hundred most influential books since the war"

How can we benefit from the promise of government while avoiding the threat it poses to individual freedom? In this classic book, Milton Friedman provides the definitive statement of his immensely influential economic philosophy—one in which competitive capitalism serves as both a device for achieving economic freedom and a necessary condition for political freedom. The result is an accessible text that has sold well over half a million copies in English, has been translated into eighteen languages, and shows every sign of becoming more and more influential as time goes on.

About the Author
MILTON FRIEDMAN, (1912-2006), was perhaps the most influential economist of the twentieth century. Professor, columnist, author and advisor, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1976.

Well done, more balanced than I expected it to be.
By Richard
A surprisingly in-depth look (for such a short book) at various market factors that capitalism affects and is affected by. I didn't expect to find any justifications for ANY government intervention in the market, but Friedman spells out many situations that he feels it would be justified, how it would affect the situation and what the alternatives would be. On the whole, this is an expertly written treatise on free market economics, or as free as rationally viable (given the political climate of the time).

One of Friedman's best works, a tremendous read
By Ryan
I love reading Friedman's works. He's one of the real 'heavyweights' when it comes to economics. As far as I'm concerned, there are no living economists that are even somewhat close to his caliber.

He also has a PBS series 'free to choose' - you can watch it on youtube for free - if you want to know if you'll like this book, watch some of his one hour films! They're wonderfully 80s, but the ideas are just as applicable today. His predictions and ideas nearly 3 decades ago are still just as applicable today.

Although at first blush many of his ideas sound somewhat hard to digest / believe, but after getting his explanation of the topic at hand, along with real world examples, his points come across loud and clear - and easy to understand. It seems to me as though Friedman is probably about the last of the great economists. His ideas are rooted firmly in evidence and common sense (very much in opposition to the economists of the current years). His case for political and economic freedom - and the accompanying reasons for a small and non-intrusive government come across clear as a bell.

Really a very enlightening read.

A rational position on the value of free markets
By LV
A rational and well thought out view on the value of free markets and voluntary exchange for modern economies. With today's shift toward bigger government and ever further redistribution, Friedman's ideas are more important than ever. Economic decisions made by a society of individuals is what allowed the US become an economic powerhouse, not a government induced separation of work and reward. Bernie Sanders would NOT approve this message.
