Review
"Serani courageously reveals her own lifetime struggles with serious depression - and devastating thoughts of suicide. The book has nowhere to go but up from there, and it delivers - with details about her own depression and treatment woven into a useful primer geared to the suffering and their families."  -- Newsday

"Living with Depression" offers the kind of insight and perspective that only can come from a professional who has gone through the same battles as the patients she treats. Savor that first chapter, because it's one of the best in the book.

--- John Grohol, Psy.D. CEO of PsychCentral

Serani offers a guide book with a soul. She clearly writes of the trials of major depression and the promise of science. She does so as a gutsy clinical psychologist who shares the wisdom made from her suffering, not just her training. She rarely shrank from the challenges of mental illness however they appeared, which will serve as an inspiration to most readers. Her comments on the roadblocks of stigma remind us that the pain of depression and most mental illness arise not solely from the illness, but from the harsh response society has to people with these disorders...
--Patrick Corrigan, Psy.D. - Distinguished Professor and Associate Dean for Research in the Institute of Psychology at the Illinois Institute of Technology

As someone who has lost a loved one to suicide, I know the accompanying journey of depression and hopelessness well. I also know the fear of sharing that journey with others. Deborah Serani courageously shares her path of despair to hope and healing with the intent of helping others from what she has learned and experienced. She also does it to continue to break the stigma that needlessly surrounds mental illness. In Living with Depression, she succeeds with her messages of hope. May this book reach the far corners of both people who suffer from mental illness and those who need to understand it.
---Dr. Michelle Linn-Gust, Ph.D. -President, American Association of Suicidology & Author of Rocky Roads: The Journeys of Families through Suicide Grief

I found Living with Depression to be not only fascinating but, since the author suffers from depression herself, also compassionate, understanding and informative. Bravo!
---Jessie Close

Sometimes, with the best of intentions and efforts, psychological professionals can't get across essential information to their patients. Living with Depression bridges that gap in communication. I wish this book had been around when I first began to deal with depression-and I will still use it as a guidebook in the future. Patients can benefit from the doctor's perspective and doctors can learn from their patients. That both are the same gifted author is a blessing to all who deal with mental illness. ---Delta Burke, actress

New York psychologist Serani helps patients understand their depression by first understanding what depression is, and then how to navigate the complex system of seeking effective treatment. In the first chapter, Serani shares her own experience with debilitating depression with hopes that her experience 'will serve as an encouraging reminder that depression can be treated.' As she moves into the more scientific sections of the book, she uses examples from her personal and professional experiences to provide more rounded explanations. She understands and acknowledges the reserves people have about using medication and consciously addresses the different treatments with that in mind. The aim of this book is to help patients come to terms with the diagnosis and the attendant stigma attached....Much of the focus is on being proactive and utilizing available resources. --Publishers Weekly

Psychologist Serani shares her own experience and related research in an effort to help all those suffering from depression to understand the disease and negotiate the labyrinth of health-care options and stigma attached to depression. She advocates knowing one's triggers, avoiding toxic people, staying connected with support systems, and making a plan to thwart suicide attempts. Serani offers validity and help to those who suffer from mood disorders but feel ashamed or don't know where to turn for help. This is a valuable resource with the potential to save lives. ---Library Journal

Easy to read and understand; Incredible resources within the book
By Fred Y.
Dr. Serani, who is a psychologist and practicing psychoanalyst, candidly shares her lifelong struggle with depression and how depression severly impacted her life and those around her. She vividly describes her personal experiences with depression, and the path she took to take back control of her life. She's an experienced, gentle, insightful author and I'm sure anyone who knows her is proud of the courage and perseverance she possessed to publish personal experiences in her life to help others. In addition, she helps the reader to understand that a variety of people in the world have depression, and live their daily lives proud and successful while "Living With Depression". The enormous amount of resources in this book are beneficial to anyone who has depression, and anyone who knows someone with depression. I also follow her online at "drdeborahserani.blogspot.com" and "psychologytoday.com". This book is a must have on your bookshelf !

By Jacquelynn Joy Nevitt
This book is the best book I have ever read on depression and I have been dealing with this illness for over 35 years. Dr. Serani is a God send.
I am only half way through the book and will write more when I am on the right antidepressant and dosage and feeling good again. Many things she has written I have been thinking but have had no one who agreed with me. Thank you Dr. Deb.

By Kristin Zimmermann
My therapist recommended that I read this book and I'm so glad I did. It is not only a moving account of Deborah's personal experience with depression, it is also a fantastic resource for anyone who is depressed or anyone who wants to better understand depression and/or help a loved one who's struggling. It was interesting to read a book about depression written by a psychologist who has experienced the illness firsthand. As someone who also suffers from depression, it was comforting to learn that other people, even mental-health professionals, struggle with torturous thoughts and feelings and that it can get better. Her tips for living and dealing with depression and preventing recurrences were very helpful and things I try to keep in mind. She also includes an overview of the various treatment options and details her own experience with medication. I would recommend this book to anyone who suffers from depression, knows someone who's battling the illness, or is just interested in learning more about depression.

About the Author
New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestseller Katie MacAlister has always loved reading. Growing up in a family where a weekly visit to the library was a given, Katie spent much of her time with her nose buried in a book. Despite her love for novels, she didn’t think of writing them until she was contracted to write a non-fiction book about software. Since her editor refused to allow her to include either witty dialogue or love scenes in the software book, Katie swiftly resolved to switch to fiction, where she could indulge in world building, tormenting characters, and falling madly in love with all her heroes. Two years after she started writing novels, Katie sold her first romance, Noble Intentions. More than fifty books later, her novels have been translated into numerous languages, been recorded as audiobooks, received several awards, and are regulars on the bestseller lists. She also writes for the young adult audience as Katie Maxwell. Katie lives in the Pacific Northwest with two dogs and a cat, and can often be found lurking around online.

There is a mix of designs with thin and thick outlines. The thick outlined ones are a blast to color with my sharpies without making myself blind for being too careful. The book has one sided designs, but you need a backup blank paper to protect the next page if you are using the alcohol based sharpies like I did (there is a test page to see if your markers are like mine). Pencils work good, was able to make layers and blend without issues with my crayola-cheapos. Good variety of designs based on the author's romance books, which I've only read two books so far. Now I need to find out why is there a cat with horns, it kinda represents my own cat when she's moody.

By MBK58
The book was nicely put together (i.e it doesn't look like it was slapped together at home) but I was a little disappointed with some of the designs. I expected the pictures to be more related to her books. There are a few nice ones, but a lot are just random designs with a book title on it. I expected more.

I expected this to be a comprehensive catalog of positional release exercises, but it is instead a survey of the different techniques. Definitely not what is needed by an individual wanting to self-administer the positional release techniques.

Minecraft: The Unlikely Tale of Markus

A completely unique and in-depth look at the creator of Minecraft, Markus "Notch" Persson, and his rise from unknown computer programmer to multi-millionaire international gaming icon. Minecraft, the "virtual Lego" game Markus crafted in his free time, has become one of the most talked about activities since Tetris. Talked about by tens of millions of people, in fact. It is the story of unlikely success, fast money, and the power of digital technology to rattle an empire. And it is about creation, exclusion, and the feeling of not fitting in.

Here Markus opens up for the first time about his life. About his old Lego-filled desk at school. About the first computer his father brought home one day. But also about growing up in a family marked by drug abuse and conflict. But above all it is the story of the fine line between seeming misfit and creative madman, and the birth of a tech visionary.

Minecraft: The Unlikely Tale of Markus "Notch" Persson and the Game that Changed Everything is a Cinderella story for the Internet age.

Review
"You may find this book as addictive as Minecraft."—Slate

"At the core of the story of Minecraft is the lesson that success is possible, if you have a good idea and the passion and skill to pursue it. Minecraft is indeed an unlikely tale. That’s what makes it so great, and that’s why this little book will make a terrific holiday gift for the gamer in your life.”—Andrew Leonard, Salon

"Minecraft is a beautifully human story...it's well worth a read and offers, at the very least, inspiration, and at the very most, hope."—TechCrunch

"This book takes his story and gives you a closer look. You learn about the man behind the game. His childhood, his family, the growth of his company and the lives of the people who work there. It doesn’t just give you the big enormous, glamour-filled cut scenes that you read about on the Internet. This book gives you the pixels, the details."—Book Riot

"Suspenseful, grounded, and startlingly relatable. I expected a book about Minecraft; what I got was a compelling story about personal struggle and accomplishment. A perfect gift for Minecraft players, parents of younger players, or anyone interested in indie games."—Game Skinny

"Pulls itself along with the narrative compulsion of a tech biography...outlines a cultural phenomenon in ways that even those who've missed out up 'til now can understand."—The Stranger

"I have been following Minecraft closely for over three years, and yet this book consistently surprised me with new insights into the game's development.  It focuses on the human story behind all those pixellated blocks. I have a new respect for Notch's accomplishments with Minecraft and for all the hard work that the Mojang'ers have devoted to making the game such a phenomenon. This book offers a fascinating and honest peek into the mind of the man who made Minecraft a reality."—Joel Levin, MinecraftEdu co-creator

"This book explores the man behind the game to a depth that you won't, and that you can't, find anywhere else. In this work, Markus "Notch" Persson has revealed everything about the events that led to an international super-phenomenon. The resulting story will fascinate and inspire."—Sethbling, Minecraft video maker

About the Author

LINUS LARSSON and DANIEL GOLDBERG are two of Sweden’s best-known writers on new technology and the internet. They have been published in the Washington Post and American Computer World, among other places, and quoted by BBC News, the New York Times, and the Sydney Morning Herald. Their first book, Swedish Hackers, was published in 2011 in Sweden. Minecraft, their bestselling English language debut, followed that same year.

Chapter 1
Three, Two, One . . .

It’s November 18, 2011. An old man in a faded gray
sweater looks up from his slot machine. A long and
steady stream of children, teens, and grown-ups flows
through the casino. Their outfits are odd, even for this
place. In Las Vegas, you can count on seeing pretty much
anything: Elvis impersonators lined up on the sidewalks,
gigantic fake-gold lions, drunken weekend revelers, and
fountains shooting water hundreds of yards into the air
synchronized to the tune of the national anthem.
The people streaming through the casino at the Hotel
Mandalay Bay are wearing cardboard boxes on their
heads. Some are in full cardboard-box bodysuits with
armholes that look uncomfortable and make their elbows
stick straight out, like cubist comic-strip characters with
the posture of bodybuilders. The cardboard suits they’ve
squeezed into are painted in large colorful squares, some
green, some black. Others are light blue, brown, and
pink. The man at the slot machines, clueless, returns to
his game, his cigarette, and his morning cocktail.
The cardboard-box people aren’t there to win money.
They continue toward the convention facilities that are next
to the casino, where in a few minutes they will be cheering
as they watch a thirty-two-year-old Swede pull a lever and
release the finished version of their favorite game.
Minecraft. A computer game as incomprehensible to
the uninitiated as it is wildly adored by tens of millions
of people. Those who’ve traveled here are among the
game’s most devoted fans. Not only have they paid airfare
but also, before embarking for Las Vegas, they cut
and glued their suits, modeled on the game’s primitive
block graphics and shapes.
And there are thousands of them, representing a total of
twenty-three countries. The youngest is four years old and
the oldest is seventy-seven. Of the many parents, some
have made the trip just for their kids and are now observing
in awe a world their offspring adore but that is alien to
them. Others are just as passionate as their children.
“We play together constantly,” says a dad with
green-tinted hair, wearing a suit sprayed green, his face
covered with black bars as he poses for pictures with his
identically decked-out son.
A few minutes later. The convention hall where we’re seated
is the largest at the Mandalay Bay. It’s completely packed
and the lights are off. All eyes turn toward the stage and
Lydia Winters, who—impossible not to recognize with her
short, shocking pink hair—is firing up the audience.
“This weekend is going to be awesome!”
Giant screens are mounted on both sides of the stage
so that those sitting farther back can see what’s happening.
They all show Lydia’s happy, glowing, almost cartoon-
character-like smile.
“So many people’s . . . lives have been changed by this
game!”
Next to the stage, just to the left, the weekend’s big star is
waiting for the signal to step up into the spotlight: Markus
Persson, dressed in jeans, well-worn sneakers, and a black polo
that’s a bit tight around the middle. As always, he’s wearing a
black fedora. Markus doesn’t know what to do with his hands
while he waits. He pulls absentmindedly at the hem of his shirt
before his hands land in his jeans pockets, thumbs out.
There is an ocean of five thousand people seated
before him—if seated is the right word, because many
of them stand up as the first of Markus’s colleagues
arrive onstage. Lydia Winters calls them up and one by
one they trudge onstage, shyly wave a little at the audience,
and line up beside her. Jens Bergensten—the programmer,
tall, lanky, his red ponytail hanging down his
back. Carl Manneh—the CEO, who is perfectly okay with
Lydia keeping the microphone. Jakob Porser—Markus’s
old friend and the cofounder of his company. The graphics
guy, Junkboy—no, his real name is never given in
public—who leaps onstage wearing a cardboard box
on his head and making victory signs for the audience.
They’re all Swedish men, all in their late twenties and
early thirties, and they all work at Mojang, the company
that produces Minecraft. Most days they sit and work at
their computers in a shabby apartment on AÅãsoÅNgatan, in
Stockholm. But this is no ordinary day.
This is the moment when the final version of Minecraft
will be released to the public. Which means that until
today, the five thousand people in the audience—and
several million others around the world—have been
playing an unfinished game. A kind of prototype, which
has earned Markus close to $70 million and created one
of the world’s most admired companies.
This is MineCon, the first convention dedicated entirely
to Minecraft. The event began as a random idea at
the Mojang headquarters on SoÅNdermalm, in southern
Stockholm. Markus Persson asked on his blog if anyone
would pay ninety dollars to go to a Minecraft convention
in Las Vegas. Within a few weeks more than 43,000 people
said they would, and the Mandalay Bay was booked.
The hotel is a forty-four-story monumental monstrosity
built entirely of gold-tinted glass. In its twenty-two
restaurants, smoke-filled poker dens, and meandering
indoor malls, you can easily spend several days without
leaving the hotel—exactly as intended. As a rule, casinos
in Las Vegas have no windows or clocks, so that gamblers
will continue to feed money into the machines throughout
the night. The desert gambling mecca is no place for
people with regular circadian rhythms.
The coming days will be an unparalleled spectacle,
bizarre for those unfamiliar with gaming conventions
in general and especially so for those who don’t know
Minecraft in particular. People will line up for hours to
get Markus’s autograph. A costume contest will nearly
degenerate into a riot. Two British men, known by millions
of fans from their YouTube channel, will be greeted
like celebrities when they play videos on the stage, showing
functioning electronic equipment built entirely within
Minecraft.
It’s not that surprising. Minecraft had grown into
an unprecedented success story well before MineCon.
Sixteen million players had downloaded the game; more
than four million of them had paid for it. Minecraft had
been praised by pretty much every gaming magazine and
website in the world. And after all, it’s a game so engrossing
that thousands of its most faithful fans have traveled
to Las Vegas to celebrate that it is finally finished.
We have come here to understand why. We want to ask
the costumed men and women what it is about Minecraft
that makes them love it more than any other game. And
not least of all, we want to know why Markus’s strange
creation has earned him such enormous sums of money.
For it was, of course, the money that made us take note
of Markus Persson in the first place. In late 2010, the
unassuming programmer began to pop up in interviews,
describing how he’d struck gold with his remarkable
game. He always displayed a modest, almost surprised
demeanor in the face of his success. He didn’t seem to
have any idea what to do with his millions.
It looked like an improbable business success, a story
of a quick breakthrough and of sudden riches, a shining
example of how the Internet can shake the foundations
of an industry and create empires within months. But the
closer we looked, the more difficult it was to fit Minecraft
into the usual frameworks. There was no successful marketing
strategy to point to, no business plan that held the
secrets to success. There was just one guy with his own,
slightly odd idea of what the gaming world needed. The
story that emerged had very little to do with polished
businessmen and fast deals. Instead, we found an idea
rooted in Markus’s childhood, one that could only blossom
outside the established framework of the gaming
industry.
Actually, it’s only now, seated a few yards from the
stage, that we fully understand what a star Markus is.
Lydia Winters continues her exuberant introduction as
we scan the crowd. There’s a woman crying in the row
in front of us, which is reserved for special guests. Her
cheeks are pierced and she has henna-colored hair and
red scars in intricate patterns on her arms. There is also
a short girl holding a camera, beaming with pride. Right
beside her, there’s an older Swedish gentleman and a
lady with shoulder-length, pure-white hair.
“This all started because of one person,” says Lydia.
If anyone had entered the hall at that moment without
knowing what was going on, that person would have
guessed she was talking about a prophet. The room
erupts in cheers.
“I think we need to do better than that. I think we need
to chant to get him up onstage.”
The whole audience responds to Lydia’s suggestion.
The roar is deafening. “Notch! Notch! Notch!” Few people
in the room know him as Markus.
Down beside the stage, thoughts race through Markus’s
head. What should he say? He has always hated speaking
in public. On Twitter, he writes for half a million people,
but this is different. Onstage, there’s no backing up and
no erasing what he’s said. It’s all live, going out directly,
both to people on-site and to those following the event
online.
Forty minutes earlier, he had asked for a drink to calm
his nerves. Someone put a glass of vodka in his hand.
Now he’s standing there trying to figure out if he’s drunk
or not. Shouldn’t he be more nervous? There was something
about the stairs too—he shouldn’t look out at the
audience when he walks up onstage, someone had said.
He might trip.
Markus carefully climbs onto the stage. He looks
self-conscious, but breaks out in a timid smile when he
holds up his hand to wave to the audience. The spotlights
seem to blind him completely. Lydia, whose neon-colored
hair is accentuated by her all-black clothing, tries to
get a few words out of Markus. He says something about
“grateful” and “cool.”
“I love you, Notch!” someone from the audience cries.
Markus squirms.
The stage decor consists of paper models and figures
resembling those in the game. One life-size human figure
looks exactly like Steve, the Minecraft protagonist.
There’s a green monster, some boxes, and a column of
blocks sporting a lever. The lever’s not actually connected
to anything, but the energy level in the room rises
when Markus approaches it.
“Are you ready for the official release of
Minecraaaaaaaaft?” Lydia roars.
The audience roars back. A techno beat begins to
pump. But Markus hesitates, grips the lever, lets it go
again. Camera flashes and the noise level in the hall
begin to approach the limits of human tolerance. Finally,
Markus gives the lever a push. Fireworks explode and
confetti shoots out over the sea of faces. The music gets
even louder and the programmers onstage break out
dancing, as Minecraft 1.0 is finally released to the world.
Markus, off to the side, just nods his head to the beat. At
that moment, a technician behind the stage tells us, four
thousand people are logging in to play Minecraft. Four
thousand per second, that is.
Jakob, the old friend from an earlier time, dances up
to Markus and receives a hug that lifts him off the floor.

Must Have For Minecraft Enthusiasts
By P. Farrell
Chances are you have played the huge sensation Minecraft. If you haven't, then chances are you won't like this book, so don't read any further.

This book tells you of the life of Minecraft's creator, Notch. You read about the hard times he has gone through, from his child hood, to today. It's very well written, and will definitely keep you interested. Now I've read some of the reviews on this book saying it's great for kids. I HIGHLY stress against letting kids read it as some of the language it uses isn't exactly appropriate, some of the situations are also not necessarily appropriate for kids.

It's a biography, and chances are if you like the person, you'll like the book.

A disappointment
By Cody Jones
Markus Persson won the lottery. Unfortunately, that doesn't make a very gripping tale.

Minecraft was successful from the start. You could draw a straight line between its earliest release and the sale to Microsoft. Sure, there were some problems along the way, but none were so big they could have jeopardized the popularity of Minecraft and the profits of its developers. A trademark legal case that cost $200k? A kerfuffle over an end user license agreement? I think the only reason these pad out the book is because the core story, the actual development of the game, is pedestrian.

So, the book focuses on context. How are indie games different than mainstream ones? Why are blocky graphics appealing? How did YouTube help launch Minecraft into the big leagues? What happens at Minecraft conventions? You might know the answers, or not.

I cannot help but compare this book to "Revolution in the Valley", or "Becoming Steve Jobs". One documents the gruelling effort of a skunk works team creating the first Macintosh, and would probably only appeal to engineers. The other covers the growth and maturation of a renowned CEO. In both cases there was adversity aplenty, which was overcome - sometimes quickly, sometimes years later, and sometimes, most sadly, not at all. Those are interesting stories. The creation of Minecraft is not.

The Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women is a fairly typical all-girls school―that is, it would be if every school taught advanced martial arts in PE and the latest in chemical warfare in science, and students received extra credit for breaking CIA codes in computer class. The Gallagher Academy might claim to be a school for geniuses, but it’s really a school for spies.

Cammie Morgan is a second-generation Gallagher Girl, and by her sophomore year she’s already fluent in fourteen languages and capable of killing a man in seven different ways (one of which involves a piece of uncooked spaghetti). But the one thing the Gallagher Academy hasn’t prepared her for is what to do when she falls for a boy who thinks she’s an ordinary girl.

Sure, she can tap his phone, hack into his computer, and track him through town without his ever being the wiser―but can she have a relationship with a regular boy who can never know the truth about her?

Cammie may be an elite spy-in-training, but in her sophomore year, she’s beginning her most dangerous mission―falling in love.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7-10–Cammie Morgan, 15, is a student at Gallagher Academy, a top-secret boarding school for girls who are spies-in-training. She studies covert operations, culture and assimilation, and advanced encryption, and has learned to speak 14 languages. Her troubles begin when she falls for Josh, a local boy who has no clue about her real identity. Keeping her training secret forces her to lie to her new love, which leads to comic complications. Subplots include Cammie's relationship with her mother–the headmistress at Gallagher–and her grief over the loss of her father, who died while on a spying assignment. The teen's double life leads to some amusing one-liners, and the invented history of the Gallagher Girls is also entertaining, but the story is short on suspense. The stakes never seem very high since there are no real villains, and the cutesy dialogue quickly becomes grating. However, the novel has been optioned for a film and will likely attract readers who enjoy lighthearted, frothy tales and squeaky-clean romances. Unfortunately, it lacks the warmth and appeal of other teen books turned into movies, such as Meg Cabot's The Princess Diaries (HarperCollins, 2000) and Ann Brashares's The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (Delacorte, 2001).–Miranda Doyle, San Francisco Public Library

but I loved delving back into the world of Gallagher Girls
By Ruthsic
It has been four years and a thousand books since I’ve read it, but I loved delving back into the world of Gallagher Girls; in fact, now I feel like I appreciate the nuances of the book more. Back when I had read it, I considered it as a light-hearted fun novel about teenage spies and the trouble they get into, but now I see how varied the theme of the book was. Sure, it starts out as fun – Cammie and her friends, Bex and Liz, are now sophomores at the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Women, a school for geniuses training in espionage, and now they get to do Covert Ops. There is a new girl in school – Macey McHenry, whom they do not know yet but is soon going to be their best friend. And on their first mission out in town, Cammie gets her first taste of normal life in Josh, a cute regular guy who notices her, despite her being very good at going unnoticed. What begins as a side project to find if he is shady soon develops into a struggle in Cammie’s heart.

While the tone of the novel is mostly jovial and the fact that the protagonist is a little boy-crazy on getting her first boyfriend, the book goes further into why Cammie is attracted to Josh. He presents a normality she has never experienced being a part of Gallagher Academy; she decisively gets to choose between her life and this picket-fence picture. All her life, she has been known as the daughter of a missing (possibly dead) agent, and here out in the real world, nobody knows that. She gets lost in her legend for a bit, but soon hard decisions have to be made, and she commits to her life as a covert operative.

Most importantly, even with the seriousness of the life as a spy and the danger it comes with, Carter infuses joy and simplicity by bringing it in a group of genius girls who have way too many skills, and a lot of love for each other. It is cute, certainly, but also slightly grim. Overall, the book is brilliant and the extra epilogue was a treat.

Prep school princess or kick-butt spy?
By S Richardson
I'm a middle school librarian and bought this to replace an often checked-out, worn-out and probably eventually lost copy of the book my school had. The kids love this book! It's about Cammie, who is a student at the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women, a scool that is supposed to be for geniuses but is actually a school for spies. Cammie loses it when she meets an ordinary, cute boy, even though she knows how to kill a man seven different ways and speaks 14 languages. This book is sort of "Princess Diaries" cute like that; you really like Cammie and (kid or grown up) you are cheering for her to catch the bad guys and catch the boy, too.

Really, really surprised by how much I loved this book!
By Siiri @ Little Pieces of Imagination
Having skimmed a sample of this many years ago (and not being really into the US covers; i'm really happy that my kindle copy downloaded with the UK covers. I wonder if this is a Europe thing?), this series didn't really appeal to me even though I knew a lot of people who were absolutely extatic when the final book released 3 years ago. Well, none of them were as persistent on pushing this on me as Eri because let me tell you this book series is her legacy through and through and I'm so glad she didn't give up and pushed this a ton on our group of friends because I really, really loved this one!

The writing is a little hard to get used to at first, but I got used to it eventually. (Mostly). It becomes enjoyable and I laughed quite a bit. The characters are great and I'm so excited to get to know them better. The spy stuff is hella fun (why aren't these books movies yet????) and so is the plot. I hope we get to see super mysterious spy stuff later on in this series (which I'm thinking is the case, because they're spies in training to be field agents someday) and if so i can't wait for it. My fav part is the friendships and Cammie & Rachel's mother-daughter relationship (I already cried twice over them; yeaaaa i was told that the first two are fluffy but THERE IS NOTHING FLUFFY ABOUT NOT BEING ABLE TO STOP THE TEARS OKAY; it's MOSTLY fluffy though (◡‿◡✿)).

A few notes: I wish that we had been shown a bit more of Macey's shift into this group of friends; Cammie's narrative claims that there are "girls of all shapes and sizes and skin color" but Bex is the only canon girl mentioned with darker skin color (where are girls of Asian, Latin, Arabian origin?) and all the girls that have a bit more description about them are described as very lean and pretty (except Cammie but her opinion on herself is highly biased). So this is one thing I hope either disappears in claims or is developed, because saying that there are girls like this, but no actual proof? Eh. Plus showing/telling & representation are different things altogether. There was something else I wanted to mention but I can't remember.. Probably irrelevant then.

Anyhoooow, I really liked this and I can't wait to read more *retreats into reading cave with book 2*

The language is easy to understand
By Riki Kiki Taco
It's a text book required for my class. The language is easy to understand, sometimes a little too easy. It does the job of a text book and aids my understanding of the material.

Boring, repetitive
By James L. Holland II
Boring, repetitive, and hard to finish. Each chapter seems like a restatement of the last. This book reads as if it's an ongoing justification for Interdisciplinary Studies. Lots of theory and terminology, little in terms of concrete steps to take.

Effective and reasonably interesting
By Tiffany Hartman
This book was required for a graduate course I was taking entitled 'The Sociology of Education.' In a nutshell, the book focuses on the theory that schools are virtual factories designed to teach students how to conform to societal norms and to prepare them for the almighty corporate workforce. Students tend to be taught what to think rather than how to think. Rote memorization shoved down throats has historically been valued over self-directed learning. Schools, argue the authors, serve the main purpose of teaching socialization rather than providing students with adequate educations. Another main theme is the discussion of meritocracy and victim-blaming. It is certainly interesting and was one of my favorite graduate courses. As far as textbooks are concerned, this one isn't bad. Enjoy!

Not so Great
By damians dollhouse
This is another book I had to buy for a class that was just sub-par. I'm not sure why classes have an obsession with students buying bland blocks of texts that are neither educational or interesting. It felt like I was reading an adult version of the fill-in-the-blank books I was forced to read in math class when I was eight. Get ready for a snore-fest. And don't get me started on the graphic design of the cover...talk about lame.

By akir
I had to get this for an educational inequalities class and I actually enjoyed reading it. It is easy to understand and it provides a lot of examples. I feel like I have a strong grasp on the functionalist, marxist, and interpretivist approach.
