Star Wars meh.

The beginning and end of the novel showed a lot of promise - dealing with both Jyn's early years with Saw, and with her subsequent capture by the Empire. Both were dark, gritty, and well plotted, even in their YA context. I just wish these moments in Jyn's life could have been explored by a non-YA novel. However, the middle of the book just reeks of the worst of YA tropes and character design. The love interest and his mother are very shallow, especially compared to how genuine the love story was in Lost Stars, another, better YA Star Wars novel. Rebel Rising is not a bad book at all - it's just very forgettable. The story would have served much better if it had been tackled in an Adult format.

On a side note - why did Disney decide to create Jyn's story in the YA realm? I mean, Ahsoka worked as a YA novel because the character came from a cartoon targeted at the YA audience. But Jyn's character comes from the most mature Star Wars to date, so...IDK. Seems odd to me.

Also, I'm ready for the Star Wars novels to move on to something other than "Here's a Story about a Character", i.e. Tarkin, Ahsoka, Thrawn, Rebel Rising, Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel, etc. Time to start thinking bigger. Maybe now that the Aftermath trilogy is done, they will. Please.

Jyn in Rogue One is a Complex Character, and Rebel Rising Shows Why

No spoilers here, and I will keep it brief. As someone who LOVED Rogue One and Jyn Erso, one of the main things I craved coming out of it was more of Jyn and Saw Gerrera's history. Both Felicity Jones and Forest Whitaker are heavyweight actors, and their performances conveyed a lot of emotional baggage. With Rebel Rising, Beth Revis tells all, from when Saw rescues young Jyn in Rogue One to when we see her on the Wobani prison transport.

Beth Revis gives us the most compelling Star Wars book since Claudia Gray's Lost Stars, in my humble opinion. It gets right down to Jyn's psyche, and we see how she evolves and becomes the damaged young woman she initially is in Rogue One. We also get the seeds of the hero she ultimately becomes in Rogue One. Do not let the Young Adult label fool you; Rebel Rising is harrowing and brutal. I winced many times during this book, and much of it is emotionally devastating. But it never completely loses the feeling of hope. Beth Revis not only has engaging writing, even when the story slows down, but she does a fantastic job balancing bits of light within the dark.

I recommend Rebel Rising to those who loved Jyn in Rogue One and those who did not. I also recommend it to people who just want to read a great book. It adds a whole other layer of sympathy and complexity to her. Tonally it reminds me of Platoon, The Shawshank Redemption, The Bourne Identity, and Logan. It is best read as the 2nd chapter of The Erso Trilogy, Part I being Catalyst by James Luceno and Part III being Rogue One by Alexander Freed. I also want to add that since I'm reviewing the product, the book is gorgeous. Underneath the slipcover is the same art on the book, just textless.

Good Star Wars story. Worth reading.

I read the Kindle edition of this book.

Set in the gap between the opening sequences of Rogue One, and the main bulk of the movie, Rebel Rising tells the story of how Jyn Erso goes from scared little girl to Rebel. Even though it is written for young adults, any fan of Star Wars should enjoy the book. I know I did. This is recommended reading for any Star Wars fan. I only hope we get a similar treatment for Rey once a little more of her story is revealed in Ep. VIII.

MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD

We know from the movie that Jyn is rescued by Saw Gerrera and raised by him for many years before she is imprisoned by the Empire. We know she is a fighter.

Saw rescues her from her cave, and takes her to his secret base. As a freedom fighter, the Empire says terrorist, Saw is all business. Food as nourishment only. Fighting practice. Code breaking. Falsifying papers. Missions. Saw raises Jyn as his own, and teaches her what she needs to know. Many rebels come and go, varying with the mission. We see some of the brutality that Saw's band is capable of, and what has caused him to not be part of the main Rebel Alliance. We also see when Saw abandons Jyn in the middle of a battle with a blaster and a knife. Jyn manages to find people to take her in, always bringing the Empire along in her wake.

Ingrid Piller is Professor of Applied Linguistics at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. The Celestine Series

I found the Celestine Prophesy thought provoking, but was a little disappointed with the tenth insight. It didn't flow as smoothly and was more difficult to digest. However, I've read the next book in the series, The Secret of Shambhala, and am now reading the final book in the series, the Twelfth Insight, and they are both in the flavor of the original Celestine Prophesy. All of have been creative and interesting and encourage the reader to evaluate personal values and behavior. I am intrigued by the spiritual rather than traditional religious interpretations of the Bible. The interpretations struck a chord in me and the blending of science and spirituality is in line with my own personal beliefs. I highly recommend the Celestine series to readers.

The Tenth Insight is life changing!

I hadn't read the Celestine Prophecy for years and so I decided to read it one day and forgot how moving it is. Then I went on line and I remembered that a sequel had been written years ago. That was the Tenth Insight. It will give you goose bumps or the shivers (whatever you like to call them.) It keeps showing us visions that we know we saw or felt all our lives but didn't really know if it was just a coincidence or all in your head. I've always believed that when I'm really praying hard for something and I see a bird (especially a hawk or an eagle) that I know that God has heard my request. It doesn't really matter if the prayer isn't answered, it's just awesome that God gave me a sign that he heard it. This book lets you know that all the quirky little things you've somehow believed since you were a child are not just random, they happen for a reason. Everyone's insight and visions are different but if we all work together in love as foretold in The Tenth Insight, what a wonderful world this would be. And for all the negative people out there who think this review is bull, that's what you see and that's what you get.

Since its inception in 1974, L.A. Theatre Works, a nonprofit radio production company, has built up a sizable catalogue of ensemble-cast productions in which major name actors (including the likes of Richard Dreyfuss, Kelsey Grammer and Jacqueline Bisset) perform classic and contemporary plays. Typical is this famous Guare work, which stars Alan Alda, Swoosie Kurtz and Chuma Hunter-Gault and is directed by Jay Sandrich. Though on tape, the production still sounds more like theater than anything else: it's all in the timing. Recorded before a live audience, in the open-miked fidelity one can sense the ambient space surrounding the actors, the charge of excitement sparking between them. The opening scene, with its New York City society dinner party, sets the overall tone of clever talkiness (here, Alda and Kurtz especially shine). When a young African-American stranger arrives at the door, claiming to be the son of actor Sidney Poitier, the plot takes some wonderfully unexpected turns. As with other L.A. Theatre Works programs, this is especially well suited for would-be actors, as the tape draws attention to the mechanics of Guare's play itselfAand to the role played by a skilled cast in animating that material. This new effort is an excellent production of Guare's famous play. When a young man enters the Fifth Avenue home of Flanders and Ouisa Kittredge claiming to be a friend of their children and son of actor Sidney Poitier, the couple is charmed by his manners, wit, and intelligence. When the Kittredges discover that "Paul" isn't all he claims to be, they find themselves stuck between embarrassment and fascination. Alan Alda and Swoosie Kurtz portray the Kittredges convincingly, with Kurtz's performance particularly effective, as she captures Ouisa's empathy and simultaneous desire not to get too involved with an obviously disturbed person. Chuma Hunter-Gault sensitively portrays the con man who manages to change the Kittredges' lives irrevocably. A few moments in which it becomes difficult to distinguish among characters' voices are all that mar a fine production. This will be welcome to students, lovers of the theater, and even more traditional fans of audiobooks. Recommended.

An essential bit of theater.

John Guare has created a witty, creative, funny, and tragic play with his SIX DEGREES OF SEPERATION, based upon the true story of a wealthy Manhattan couple who are fooled into allowing a con-man who claims to be a friend of their Harvard children, and the son of actor Sideny Potier into their home. Paul, the con-man in question, is a homosexual who has previously seduced a lover into telling him secrets about people in this upper-class Manahatten community. Paul even goes so far as to stabbing himself and claiming that he was mugged for his briefcase.
Mr. guare has adapted this story to the playbook with astoinding creativity and brilliance. His characters grow and learn with each passing scene. Mr. Guare is an incredible author who has built a beautiful world on the stage. I can't imagine how wonderful a sight this must be when seen live. SIX DEGREES OF SEPERATION is essential when studying or performing modern theater. Nothing this decade has stood out as much as this play.
