About the Author

Rael Isacowitz is a world-renowned practitioner and teacher of Pilates. With over three decades of Pilates practice and achievement, he is a prominent lecturer and teacher at symposia, universities, colleges, and studios around the globe. He received his bachelor of education degree and teaching credentials from Israel's prestigious Wingate Institute, where he subsequently joined the teaching faculty. He later earned a master of arts degree in dance from the University of Surrey, England.

Rael’s early Pilates teachers included Alan Herdman and thereafter several of the first-generation Pilates teachers (known as the Elders), including Kathy Grant, Ron Fletcher, Romana Kryzanowska, Eve Gentry, and Lolita San Miguel.

Rael has mastered all levels of the Pilates repertoire and is noted in the industry for his unique athleticism; synthesis of body, mind, and spirit; and passion for teaching. In 1989 he founded Body Arts and Science International (BASI) Pilates, which has developed into one of the foremost Pilates education organizations in the world. BASI Pilates is currently taught in more than 100 locations spanning 30 countries.

English mathematician Alan Turing (1912–1954) is the author of the 1936 paper "On Computable Numbers, with an Application to the Entscheidungsproblem" that introduced the imaginary computer called the Turing Machine for understanding the nature and limitations of computing. His famous 1950 article "Computing Machinery and Intelligence" introduced the Turing Test for gauging artificial intelligence.

A 10 year quest to understand Turing's paper ends here

It was about 10 years ago when I first found Turing's original paper on Internet and thought it wouldn't be so hard to read and understand it (after all its "mere" computer science). Since then I've tried to digest it quite a few times on and off and never actually succeeded. Infect most of the time I got stuck on few nitty-gritty and just couldn't move forward. I have even bought/borrowed almost all books on the subject that falls in to "popular science" types. Needless to say, like many such books in same category, they just never go in to details and are practically useless for all practical purposes :).

So imagine my surprise when I see a book with title "Annotated Turing" and by none other than Charles Petzold who I've known as author who normally writes programming books. That surprise was only a start. I was simply shocked when I opened the book. It was as-if someone read your dream and made it a reality with absolute precision with zero compromises. If there is one such book like this for all of the milestone scientific papers, there would be a revolution in learning.

Let me put out some points what makes this book so perfect. Not just wishy-washy "near perfect", I'm saying SO PERFECT.
*First, the book contains explanation of every single line in Turing's paper. Literally. The format of the book is a line quoted from Turing's paper in bold and a paragraph or so of explanation and discussions for that line. Author's claim is that you can actually cut out all those lines and stitch them to recreate the Turing's paper in its entirety complete with page numbers! Now that's what I call precision.
*The book also includes all encompassing big picture overview, historical situation, importance, consequences and so on - nicely preparing reader for the journey.
*The book is so readable that I usually forget I'm reading a very technical book that goes in to very core of computer science. It's like nicest computer science professor reads you the paper line by line and answers all your questions, even those completely stupid ones.
*As I'd doubted many times, there are lots of errors in Turning original paper. This book amazingly points them out and corrects even the minor misprints. I'm just surprised how author even know so much "insider" details about those trivial misprints and errors.
*Turing's paper is full of obscure strange symbols (have you seen old gothic German font?) that are common in scientific literature today. Author explains all these symbols, what they mean, where they came from, what are the subtle differences and so on. Just amazing.
*Turing's paper have lot of omissions for explanations and steps which he probably left out as "exercise for reader" to keep his paper short. Sometime you might get stuck in those exercises and if you are not in academia you probably have no external help. This book deals with all these omissions and expands so beautifully on them that I can't imagine if there any better way to describe them.
*Apart from omissions, there are lot of shortcuts that Turing employs with rather flitting explanations or sometime absolutely none. This book covers you 100% for these shortcuts.
*A big part of understanding Turing's paper is actually mentally running his machine's step by step for all the examples he puts out. This book actually does this step-by-step run explanation making it so easier to read and understand quickly.

Anyway, some of you might think why one should even bother about reading this ancient computer science paper in first place? Answer is huge changes in the way we have started viewing universe recently. While Seth Lloyd's book "Programming the Universe" does good job of explaining this thinking, the summary is that the universe can be seen as computing machine rather than particle and energies in the realms of physics. There was even a paper that proposed that even a simple system consisting of billiard balls interacting in space is Turing complete! That means by setting billiards balls in some initial points in space and velocity can computer anything that your laptop can compute in theory. To understand advances in this area you have to fully understand what is Turing's machine and what it means to be Turing complete and how one can prove that a certain system is computationally Turing complete. That's where the paper comes in. Text books just don't do justice.

Rich and surprisingly accessible

Don't let the title fool you: This isn't simply Alan Turing's groundbreaking paper "On Computable Numbers, with an Application to the Entscheidungsproblem" with a handful of footnotes thrown in. While the paper is contained here in its entirety, there is, on average, about a paragraph of explanation for each line of Turing's prose. And before that, there is an extensive introduction to important concepts, starting with the distinctions between rational, irrational, algebraic, transcendental, and computable numbers--all explained in terms that any intelligent undergraduate should be able to understand. No mathematical background is assumed beyond algebra.

The Annotated Turing exceeds even the best undergraduate textbooks in explaining these concepts clearly yet concisely, and in doing so sets up the historical context that Turing worked in. When there is an interesting story to tell about Hilbert or Russell, he tells it. (Russell's life was, after all, sufficiently fascinating to be the subject of a recent comic book, Logicomix.) Those with a more extensive mathematical background will want to skim the early sections, but shouldn't skip them entirely.

What Douglas Hofstadter's Gödel, Escher, Bach did for Gödel's Incompleteness Theorem--a crucial discovery that was poorly understood outside of the domain of professional mathematicians--Petzold's book does for Turing's universal computer. If you have any interest whatsoever in the theory of computing, make this the first book you read.

A fantastic commentary that will leave you bewildered

I have a very firm belief that most books, documents, or textbooks on mathematics or the sciences are written by people without souls. This is certainly not one of those books.

From the very beginning the author provides very clear and informative summaries, illustrations, and examples so that you can digest one of the most important mathematics papers of the 20th century. He even throws in some subtle humor in the mix (it's easy to miss!). Each successive chapter should leave you with some sense of interest/amazement or thoughts of, "why didn't I think of this?" By the end you will understand how a computer works at its very core.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in computers or the foundations of mathematics. It will give deeper insights what computers and humans can, and will never be able to do.

One last note: there are certain points in the book (especially near the end) which can be difficult to parse. I would recommend anyone who does not understand first order logic to a great degree to not worry about understanding all the details, but accept the author's commentary and move on, especially if you're reading it for the first time. You should first try to understand the big picture before worrying about the nitty-gritty, and the book will be more enjoyable that way.

ton of fun. Totally unexpected

Just a ton, ton of fun. Totally unexpected. It's pure fluff, don't get me wrong, but so worth it. Made me laugh/smile constantly. It's written "back in the day" when e-mail was still the new, cool thing (before texting and internet messaging, facebook, snapchat, Instagram, twitter, and the like). So, it's an office setting, various co-workers/colleagues, primarily, who are working at a newspaper outfit and e-mailing each other all day (then, of course, a "boy" comes into the picture ... and we get his e-mails, to his brother, to his mother, etc. ...). It's really fast-paced and clever. Loved it. Bought it on my phone at first. Then, went and bough a hard copy just to give to my friend, who I knew would think it was as hysterical as I did. The hardcover is ugly, though. So, if you buy it, go for the softcover. And to think the whole thing started, really, because I saw the cover with the Great Dane on it ... couldn't help myself, as I've had a few ... so started to read. The book's really not about the dog at all. Still, great, funny stuff! Highly recommend it for anyone like me (with super high stress, serious job) to just get away from it all at the end of the day! Fun stuff!

I really enjoyed it

I saw a lot of "it's okay" I think it was because of how the story is set up and it is not a typical romance or even chick lit set up. I applaud the author for the unique aspect to this book. The characters create a lot of humorous scenes where you are literally cracking up laughing. There are awkward scenes between the characters that leave just enough humor to dampened the "uh...oh" scenes. I am not a fan of awkward moments I doubt anyone is but to the point where I will put the book down, pause the movie or leave the room entirely and not come back if it is really awkward and annoying.

The author doesn't give me that with this book which I was happy with. These types of novels are always about blunders, humorous situations, awkward moments and over all just a oh no no no what did i do kind of feel. Cabot manages to pull this off with such flair and enjoyment. I have never been disappointed by any one of her books. I am slowly working my way through her entire collection of books because I know I will enjoy every one of them just because she is that well written and humorous of a writer.

I hope she continues this series past the 3 books it has

Laugh out loud funny - and romance with a capital "R"!

I started reading this one while in the bathtub and I DID NOT get out until I'd gotten to the final page, even though I had to keep adding hot water to the tub when it grew tepid and my toes became so wrinkled that I could hardly bear to look at them when I finally stood up again.

This is a romance novel but it is also far more, suspenseful and funny as well. Basic plot - Young woman goes to check on her elderly neighbor, only to find her unconscious and bloody, face down on her floor. Young woman, having a heart of gold, steps in to take care of her neighbor's pets. Meanwhile, the neighbor's nephew, handsome but coldhearted, is off on a romantic fling and enlists the help of a buddy to take his place. This, of course, includes masquerading as the nephew.

Misunderstandings ensue, of course, along with romance....all under false pretenses (young woman knows nothing of the truth). The whole tale is told, charmingly, through a series of emails. I absolutely could NOT put down this book until the final delicious page.

Having said that, some of it is a bit predictable and a few stereotypes abound (brainless models, for instance). But, all in all, this is a fun read and far superior to most in the field. I confess I loved every single page of the book.

About the Author

JIAN-MING JIN, PhD, is Y. T. Lo Chair Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Director of the Electromagnetics Laboratory and Center for Computational Electromagnetics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He authored Theory and Computation of Electromagnetic Fields (Wiley) and Electromagnetic Analysis and Design in Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and coauthored Computation of Special Functions (Wiley) and Finite Element Analysis of Antennas and Arrays (Wiley). The books is thorough and insightful, provides comprehensive coverage of advanced topics (e.g. higher-order edge vector elements, discontinuous Galerkin's method) some of which are no covered by other textbooks but scattered over numerous journal papers.

Anne Carson's Autobiography of Red is a novel in verse, the author's first. A classicist by profession as well as a poet, Carson has drawn on antiquity for her cast, updating the myth of Geryon and Herakles. In the original version, of course, Herakles killed the red-skinned, winged Geryon. In Carson's very contemporary retelling, he merely inspires, but does not return, the monster's passion. By choosing Geryon as her central character, Carson can bring up the questions of existence as if they hadn't been asked before. After all, the monster's instincts have not been numbed by civilization. Fires twist through him. We feel the pain of learning the most elementary things, and then the volcanic intensity that comes with that more advanced thing, love. Yet Carson doesn't so much tell the story of Geryon's love as mediate his very being through semiological surfaces: cafes, video stores, lipstick, a library where he shelves government documents with a "forlorn austerity, / tall and hushed in their ranges as veterans of a forgotten war." Carson seldom satisfies herself with an image of the world. Instead she atomizes the world, leaving it broken down, refracted, and glinting. At times her verbal pyrotechnics manage to render pure energy: A little button at the end of each range activated the fluorescent track above it.

At the center of the narrative is a winged red monster named Geryon; throughout, we see him struggling with his family, falling for the indifferent Herakles, and discovering photography as a means of comfort and escape. Wistful yet whimsical, offhand yet intense, funky yet erudite (Carson, a classics professor at McGill, grounds this work in ancient Greek myth), this is a reading experience like no other.

The title says autobiography; the subtitle, novel; and an inner title page reads "A Romance." Go with the last, for Carson recasts the Greek legend of Geryon, the red, winged monster that Herakles killed during his tenth labor. Names, wings, and some mythical details remain, but the setting is contemporary. Geryon, 14, meets Herakles, 16, and it's love at first sight. Life separates them, but they meet again when Geryon, now 22, literally runs into Herakles in Buenos Aires. Herakles and a colleague (and lover), scouting volcanoes for a film, whisk Geryon to the Andes, where his wings may cause him to be taken for an immortal. There the story breaks off. The start of another fantasy trilogy? Hardly, for although we know the story's end, it is not in the source, an ancient poem that now exists only in fragments. Instead, Carson interviews the poet, Stesichoros (circa 630^-555 B.C.), about his vision (he may have been blinded by Helen of Troy). Narratively, philosophically, humorously, a dazzling performance. It must be a question of perspective. For me, it's as if I am standing outside a window looking in, and as I read, it is from the perspective of a mother of sons. Certain pieces linger -- Geryon's observation of stones at the beginning of the story- Carson has a unique ability to capture through mere glimpses the honesty and beauty of a child's understanding of his relationship to the world around him, trust in his brother because that's how the world should work in the mind of a 5 year old child; Geryon and his mother enjoying their Tuesday night routine- Geryon's mother's appreciation and validation of his sculpture autobiography; and perhaps what still pulls at my heart is what Carson was able to convey in the baby-sitting chapter- Geryon's retreat when his mother leaves and his springing to life with her return.

As I read the novel, I had to force myself not to judge, but to observe; it was easier the second time through. Still, my heart aches for Geryon, and his vulnerability. Carson beautifully captures Geryon's plight "outside and inside." My chest still tightens as I recall Geryon's struggle as he is left to fend for himself, first by his brother's apathy, then by his brother's violence, the cruelty of love lost, and finally the cost of his freedom.

"Who can a monster blame for being red?"

My heart aches for Geryon as he searches for meaning and an understanding of the distance between himself and the ones he loves, and his place in time and space.

Alice Munro captured the sentiment best: "this book is amazing -- I haven't discovered any writing in years so marvelously disturbing."

I'm 79 and I learned out of these books. My daughters also and now my grandchildren. Can't begin to tell you how many endless hours of pleasure learning piano has brought me throughout my life. If you're going to learn how to play, this is the best in my opinion.
