From the Publisher
This introduction to inorganic chemistry emphasizes the use of bonding theories to explain the structures and reactions of inorganic compounds.

From the Inside Flap
Preface

A new edition of a text can mean many things. To authors, it is a chance to try again to get it right and readable, and to revise outdated sections. To teachers and students, the new edition is potentially a more readable and useful text. For the author's family and friends, it is a chance to reclaim the attention that was devoted to the revising process. And finally, it means that the first edition was successful enough that a revision is necessary. We hope potential users will agree that this second edition retains the best features of the first edition and corrects any flaws.

As in the first edition of Inorganic Chemistry, we have chosen to emphasize molecular orbitals and symmetry in many aspects of bonding and reactivity. For example, we have devoted an early chapter, Chapter 4, to a discussion of molecular symmetry and introductory group theory, with examples of applications to molecular vibrations and chirality. In later chapters, we have used group theory in a variety of other applications, including molecular orbitals of main group compounds (Chapter 5) and coordination complexes (Chapter 10), and infrared spectra of organometallic compounds (Chapter 13). Additional applications of group theory are included in problems at the end of these and other chapters.

The early chapters provide a review of atomic theory (Chapter 2) and simple concepts of chemical bonding (Chapter 3). Following the introduction to group theory in Chapter 4, this theory is applied to the construction of molecular orbitals in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 provides a discussion of various acid-base concepts, emphasizing applications of molecular orbitals to acid-base interactions. Following the advice of many, we have added a chapter on solid state inorganic chemistry (Chapter 7). Chapter 8 summarizes some of the most important aspects of main group elements and their compounds. The rapid development of chemistry of the fullerenes has been recognized in a discussion of these molecules in Chapter 8 and of fullerene complexes in Chapter 13.

Chapters 9 through 14 are directed to the chemistry of the transition elements. The first four of these chapters deal, respectively, with the structures, bonding, electronic spectra, and reactions of classical transition metal complexes. We have followed reviewers' advice in reorganizing these chapters into this sequence. For this edition we have moved the discussion of terms and microstates into Chapter 11 so it immediately precedes its most common use, interpretation of spectra of coordination complexes. We have written the section on terms and microstates so it can still be used with the discussion of atomic spectra (Chapter 2) for those who might wish to follow the organization of the first edition.

Chapters 13 and 14 provide an introduction to organometallic compounds, their spectra, and reactions. Special attention has been given to catalytic cycles and their application to problems of chemical and industrial significance.

We believe that seeking similarities in the chemistry of different types of compounds can be an extremely valuable exercise, and we have therefore discussed some of these important parallels in Chapter 15, placing particular emphasis on the isolobal analogy developed by Roald Hoffmann and on similarities between main group and transition metal clusters.

Finally, no text would be complete without a discussion of the role of inorganic compounds in biological processes and in the environment. We have therefore devoted the final chapter, Chapter 16, to selected aspects of bioinorganic and environmental inorganic chemistry.

We have chosen the topics and the level of treatment that works well for us. Every teacher has favorite topics, as well as least-favorite ones. We hope that our choice of topics allows potential users to tailor the contents to their own courses. We welcome suggestions for improvements in future editions.

In addition to selecting the most appropriate topics, we have attempted to make our text as accessible to students as possible. We have therefore increased the number of examples and exercises within the chapters, with answers to examples included in the chapters and answers to exercises in Appendix A. To encourage use of the literature in inorganic chemistry, we have retained the extensive references in the first edition and have also increased the number of end-of-chapter problems taken from the chemical literature. We hope that these will be useful to both faculty and students using this text. At the end of each chapter is a list of suggested supplemental readings, with brief comments on each.

We want to express special appreciation to our students, who have submitted many suggestions for improving the clarity and accuracy of this edition. We especially appreciate one student, Beth Truesdale (now a Rhodes Scholar), who reviewed every chapter in detail and made hundreds of valuable suggestions. Thanks also to those from other schools who reviewed this book in preparation and offered many helpful suggestions:

Christopher W. Allen, University of Vermont
E. Joseph Billo, Boston College
Shelby Boardman, Carleton College
J. K. Burdett, University of Chicago
Robert L. Carter, University of Massachusetts, Boston
Michael Crowder, Miami University of Ohio
Edward Gillan, University of Iowa
Stephen Z. Goldberg, Adelphi University
Thomas Herrinton, University of San Diego
Brian Johnson, St. John's University, Minnesota

Robert G. Linck, Smith College
John Morrison, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Roy P. Planalp, University of New Hampshire
John Sheridan, Rutgers University
Joshua Telser, Roosevelt University
Ray Trautman, San Francisco State University
Steve Watton, Virginia Commonwealth University
John C. Woolcock, Indiana University of Pennsylvania

We are responsible for the final result, but it has been improved by their comments, even when we did not follow their suggestions.

At Prentice Hall, John Challice was instrumental in starting the revision and Matthew Hart in keeping it moving. And Celeste Clingan at Accu-color, Inc. shepherded us through the production process with grace and understanding.

Most of all, we thank Becky, Naomi, Rachel, and Marge for their patience, help, and love throughout this process.

Okay textbook
By Student123
This book served as the textbook for my advanced inorganic chemistry class in college. Inorganic chemistry may be inherently difficult. That being said, I do not feel that Miessler was a particularly apt guide in navigating the byzantine intricacies of subjects like Molecular Oribital Theory. I found myself having to re-read passages, to parse out important points. The integration of these points into the body of knowledge at large felt to me to be a charge which Miessler expects the student to bear. That is to say, the text can at times feel fragmentary, devoid of the holistic picture, what I reckon the systematic nature of scientific knowledge.

That being said, I really do not know of any better text books on the subject.

Great Book, needs solutions manual though.
By Dylan Pitcairn
Inorganic chemistry is an interesting class, and this book is much cheaper to rent or buy than the newest 5th edition. The only draw back is that you need the solutions manual (which sells separately).

Comprehensible
By Audrey
I used this book for my undergraduate course in Inorganic. I thought it did it's job pretty well. The explanations were simple and easy to follow. If you need practice problems with solutions, however, you would need supplementary material.

First hand accounts of a problem that is ongoing and universal - children refugees
By Hugh May
This book is excerpted by Diane Samuels in her written introduction to the play "Kindertransport", 1993/1995/2008.
This 1966 book was published near the time of the 25 th anniversary (1938-1939) of the first children's transports from Nazi Germany by one of those children, and is a collections of reminiscences. Thus it provides a first hand account of the times.
Other topical books include "Into the Arms of Strangers" (book and DVD); "If it is Not Impossible, the Life of Sir Nicholas Winton", by Barbara Winton, 2014. Winton died 7.1.2015.; "Nicholas Winton and the Rescued Generation" by Muriel Emmanuel and Vera Gissing, (2014 ed.). There are many other books and films on this subject.
"Lest we forget" applies to those times and to today's world of refugees and this book will help guide careful reflection, and perhaps action to this ongoing devastating and increasingly universal problem.

Masterfully conceived, elegantly executed, this compendium with chapters written by unparalleled experts will ease you though the essentials of hypnosis and hypnotic practice into technical expertise. For the tyro, for the curious, for the veteran--principles and practice at their very best. --Jeffrey K. Zeig, PhD, Director, The Milton Erickson Foundation, Phoenix, AZ

This authoritative, yet readable volume will be of tremendous value to researchers, clinicians, and educators. In 30 wide-ranging chapters, this handbook weaves together clinical applications, case material, and the latest in scientific evidence on virtually all facets of the use of hypnosis. If one owned just a single book on the topic, this superb second edition of the Handbook of Clinical Hypnosis would be the one to have! --Len Milling, PhD, Department of Psychology, University of Hartford, Hartford, CT

This is a worthy successor to the first edition. As hypnosis, with the rest of psychotherapy, enters the era of mental-health parity, managed care, and evidence-based practice, it is important for clinicians to know what works and what doesn't, and what remains to be learned. This volume should be ready at the hand of every clinician who contemplates using hypnosis. --John F. Kihlstrom, PhD, Department of Psychology, University of California, Berkeley

The contributors and the content of this book give what is needed for an appreciation of the nature of hypnosis, an understanding of its integration into professional practice, and a presentation of many practical and evidence-based techniques. Both old hands and newcomers to hypnosis will benefit from this contemporary and engaging handbook. --Kevin M. McConkey, PhD, Professor of Psychology, The University of Newcastle, Callaghan, Australia

These contributors to this handbook offer a wide-ranging account of experiential, behavioral, and biological findings important in contemporary applications and conceptions of hypnosis. By covering a variety of approaches that jointly integrate hypnosis into mainstream psychology, this handbook, beyond addressing a great many specific problems, affirms and encourages a more inclusive view of human nature and the diverse ways humans are capable of experiencing, enjoying, and enduring the human condition. --Auke Tellegen, PhD, Department of Psychology, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis

From the Inside Flap
Rudolf Wittkower Architectural Principles in the Age of Humanism 'Scores have profited from, and been inspired by, Architectural Principles in the Age of Humanism and its lesson of the importance of consistent modular relations. No other book on the subject of architectural history written by scholars of his generation has had such a creative effect on men in practice.' Nikolaus Pevsner, Foreword to Art and Architecture in Italy 'Professor Wittkower's mind is not only inquiring but immensely well stored and tenacious. His studies of humanist architecture are masterpieces of scholarship.' Sir Kenneth Clark, Architectural Review 'To say that this is the best study of Italian Renaissance architecture in English is faint praise.' John Coolidge, Magazine of Art Since its original publication in 1949, Architectural Principles in the Age of Humanism has acquired the status of a classic, having brought to light, through exemplary scholarship, the connections between the architecture and the culture of the Renaissance. Focusing on the work of the main Renaissance architects from Alberti to Palladio, Rudolf Wittkower has produced definitive explanations of the true significance of certain architecture forms, and has at the same time revealed the limitations of a purely aesthetic theory of Renaissance architecture. This fifth edition of Architectural Principles in the Age of Humanism, intended to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of the book, integrates the illustrations with the text and includes an edited selection of lectures on Proportion by Professor Wittkower.

About the Author
Rudolf Wittkower (1901-1971), a leading authority on the art and architecture of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, was born in Berlin and received his Ph.D. from the University of Berlin in 1923.

A real classic. My previous read was in architecture school. This new edition is a handsome presentation of Witkower's work that continues to be valuable both in office practice and in academia.

Failed Crusade: America and the Tragedy of Post-Communist Russia, by Stephen F. Cohen Ph.D.

What really happened in Russia after the end of the Soviet Union, and how badly experts and the media misjudged it.

Failed Crusade is a deeply informed and passionate call for a fundamentally different American-Russian relationship in the post-Yeltsin era. Author Stephen Cohen shows that what US officials and other experts call "reform" has for most Russians been a catastrophic development―namely the unprecedented demodernization of a twentieth-century country―and for the United States the worst foreign policy disaster since Vietnam. What emerges is an alarming analysis of nuclear-laden Russia after 1991, representing an even greater threat to our national security than during the Cold War, and an indictment of American journalists and policy makers who failed to see or report the truth about the complicity of U.S. policy in a great human tragedy. This paperback edition has been updated to reflect the events of the last year. "Cohen writes with bracing clarity on a subject obscured by euphemisms and double talk."―Robert D. Kaplan, New York Times Book Review

From Publishers Weekly
When the Soviet Union collapsed nearly a decade ago, the U.S. adopted a policy of activist support for the successor regime of Boris Yeltsin and rarely questioned that strategy. Today, Russia is burdened with an economy in shambles, an alarming national health crisis and, many fear, nuclear insecurity. Anti-Americanism is on the rise and a career secret policeman heads the Kremlin, yet Washington has still not re-assessed its Russia policy. That worries Cohen, a Russia scholar with a track record for contrarian views. The end of the Cold War, he argues, exacted a harsher penalty on the Russian people than any military loss could have, and the "aid" proffered by the U.S., in the form of technocratic blueprints for free markets, is much to blame. In a chilling analogy, Cohen notes that the traditional role of the U.S. as ally to Russia is one in which Washington "pressured a collapsing Russia to remain in the carnage." Russia survived the allied blood-lettings of two World Wars, but Cohen sees the U.S.-prescribed "shock-therapy" as fatal. The result: societal and economic devastation so severe that it warrants a new Marshall Plan and threatens U.S. national security more than the Cold War ever did. Cohen's criticism is sharp and angry. He targets policy-makers and economic advisers for their ignorance of Russian history; he lambastes scholars for their misguided prognosis of Russia's progress; and he scorns foreign journalists for a more unforgivable sinAtouting the "Washington Consensus" in spite of the growing catastrophe surrounding them. From Library Journal
Cohen (Russian studies and history, New York Univ.) here presents an opinion not held by most U.S. officials and Russian "experts": that the so-called democratization of post-Soviet Russia has been a failure. The author lays out his theories in three parts: he describes how these experts crusaded for a Russia they wanted and, in doing so, managed to overlook what was really taking place in the country. Next, he includes a series of articles he has written since 1992, which further describes the actual political and economic upheaval that has been taking place there. Finally, he presents solutions to remedy Russia's woes and help bring it into the 21st century. Although Cohen is an accomplished author (Bukharin and the Bolshevik Revolution; Sovieticus: American Perceptions and Soviet Realities), his style tends to be gloating and melodramatic. However, this is a good collection that offers varying opinions of modern Russian history. For academic libraries.AJill Jaracz, Chicago

From Booklist
As a CBS News consultant, New York University professor Cohen is among the more visible Russia watchers. He is also an unapologetic critic of U.S. policy; the disastrous results of that policy are Failed Crusade's subject. In part 1, Cohen describes the arrogant missionary crusade to impose U.S. political and economic institutions on the former Soviet Union--a crusade led by American policy makers, with journalists and academics as cheerleaders--and the desperate consequences for the Russian people of their elected leaders' acceptance of this program. Part 2 gathers 10 Cohen critiques of this American crusade published between 1992 and 1998; postscripts update each article. In part 3, Cohen urges that the goal of U.S. policy should be to reduce the risk of nuclear disaster by stabilizing this giant nuclear power. This can be accomplished, he argues, only by acknowledging our crusade's failure, providing massive aid and debt relief to allow the Russian people to develop political and economic institutions that serve their needs, and truly cooperating with Russia in its efforts to define its future. From a Casual Reader
By Douglas Doepke
I should point out that I'm no expert in Soviet or Russian studies. Instead, I'm simply a reader interested in international affairs. As a long time subscriber to the Nation magazine, I know Cohen as one of those rarest of birds-- a scholarly observer of Soviet-Russian, affairs with no particular ideological axe to grind. Consequently, I trust his experience to provide a reasonably accurate examination of post-communist Russia, particularly vis-à-vis the US. Of course, American scholarship has long been tainted by its own brand of anti-communist political correctness. Thus, I count Cohen's contributions as a particularly valuable resource.

His general thesis here is pretty straightforward--US policy botched post-Soviet Russia by trying to remake the economy abruptly in America's free-market image. This was attempted through a series of shock treatments intended to convert the formerly statist economy to a capitalist one. Basically, the policy failed because it took no account of Russia's realities, either historical, economic, or sociological. In short, it was a crash program blindly imposed, the consequences of which are still sorting out. Yeltsin and a coterie of advisors, such as Anatoly Chubais, stand as principal culprits in the debacle. Naturally, Cohen follows the course of events in detail, many of which are reprinted from Nation articles of the 1990's, along with later observations from year 2000. Thus, Part II, the book's backbone, is not so much an historical narrative as it is a chronology of his observations on developments as they occurred, along with the later update. Just how satisfying the reader finds this format is up to the reader.

My edition is the "Updated" one; however, none of the contents appear dated any later than year 2000. Thus, readers looking for more contemporary commentary should probably look elsewhere. Nonetheless, Cohen's observations remain, I believe, as valid now as they were then, and perhaps tell us as much about our own foreign policy establishment as they do about Russia's so-called transition period.

the best and a must read on post-communist Russia
By swiftarrow
Part I of the book is pure gem - every word is true about Russia, about the American crusaders, about what's wrong and who is to blame. all the more amazing when you get to Part II, and realize that Dr Cohen has been giving the warnings as early as the early 1990s and on. Unfortunately his sage advice has not been and is not heeded to -- just witness the latest crusade in Iraq. The only post-socialist transitions that have done well are the ones that did not bother to listen to American advisers. Imposition of foreign systems and values, however valid in another national setting, is bound to fail because of the mismatch with local realities and traditions. How can American crusaders so quickly forget the fate of Marxism itself - another wise theory and model imported from abroad and imposed on all countries that became "communist."

Really wanted this book
By LDLewis
I had the book on my wish list for 6 months or so - when the price dropped below $5, I jumped. Well, there really isn't much insight here for anyone except the author. He claims that getting fat and then getting thin helped him understand how hard it was to lose weight. But, he managed to lose 17 pounds the first month he was on the "2Fit" part and never really explains how.
If I didn't want weight loss tips, I might have found his story more interesting. As it was, I kept reading, waiting for the big reveal. I am still waiting.

long on feelings and recipes, short on application
By Kindle Customer
I was hoping for a lot more information on how his weight gain/loss translated into better results for his clients. He plays lip service to that being his primary motivation throughout the entire book, but never actually gets around to explaining how what he learned actually helped. Makes me feel like it was just a marketing strategy, not R&D. Or maybe it's a good idea but he's not the right guy to apply lessons from it. I dunno. If you're into a bunch of feelings and some recipes you'll probably rate it higher than me.

Fit2Fat2Fit Was Worth My Time and Money But Come-on Drew have a Carrot
By BigDaddy13
I purchased Fit2Fat2Fit a week ago after following the A&E TV series. The show is totally awesome so I decided to buy the book. First of all I will say is the $10 I paid was well worth it just to find the Spinach Shake recipe. To be honest I have never loved eating spinach but if you try the spinach shake you will be amazed at how good it is and every serving has three cups of fresh spinach in it. I loved the shake for breakfast, lunch or dinner or even for a snack. The book chronicled Drew's idea of gaining 75 lbs. in order to really see what challenges his over weight client were having. I won't go into anymore book detail other than to say it is very interesting and it was worth my time and money. I was a little miffed or put off by the story in the book of Drew's friends bringing him carrots while visiting his home but Drew would not eat the carrots because they contained too much starch. This story made Drew look like a robot who has no trouble not eating something tempting like a cookie or some ice cream. It made me think that Drew is still way out of touch with the normal American and the real life struggles of the Obese. My actual rating is 4.4 Stars.

Fifteen Years of Complacency Proves Shattering
By Jane Pensive
If it hadn't been for Eichmann's son Klaus' indiscete comments to a girlfriend who unbeknownst to him happened to be half Jewish, the Israelis may never have captured the chief technician of the Holocaust. Since the Eichmann family had been living quietly undisturbed in Argentina for 15 years, son Klaus must have been confident that his father would never be detected. Once the Israelis got onto Eichmann they held on tenaciously tracking first his exact whereabouts, his assumed name, his certain identity, and formulating an audacious plan to snatch Eichmann on his way home from work, literally smuggling him out of Argentina to Israel. There he famously stood trial in a bullet proof booth for his crimes against humanity.

What a story! The author of the new forward to the book discloses that PM David Ben Gurion instructed Mossad chief Harel to write the book in order to commemorate Israel's stunning achievement in bringing Eichmann to justice by the people whom he tried to eradicate from existence. Written in 1965, the story was not first published for another ten years in 1975. Although Harel writes in a dry fashion, his voice is the correct one to expose the almost unbearably tense operation to capture Eichmann. If Harel had been a more thrilling author, I am not sure I could have withstood the suspense of reading the story. The tone also fits the idea of the book which is that the reader is sitting front row center for a personal view of the absolute facts of Mossad's plot. The story reads like "Dragnet" on steroids. Isser Harel stars as an Israeli Joe Friday.

The revised book improves the initial publication by giving all of the facts including the true names of the Mossad agents twenty years after the original publication. The preliminary maps and cast of characters also aid the reader in keeping track of those involved, especially the Israeli names, which I could have gotten lost in many times. A great read and a testament to Israel's determination to avenge its people.

The book did a wonderful job in giving a glimpse into the emotions

A well written memoir of the capture of Eichmann in Argentina. The book did a wonderful job in giving a glimpse into the emotions, the struggles, the intense planning and the covert operations behind this infamous capture by Israel's Mossad agents. The book was gripping and my husband and I enjoyed it together. He read it after I had and was captivated as well.

A True Classic of Espionage
By Freedom Fighter
Isser Harel, the former head of Israel's secret service, recounts in detail the tracking down and capture of the infamous war criminal Adolph Eichmann. A highly readable, fascinating account of the tracking down and capture of this high level Nazi.
Starting with an improbable lead from a blind man in Buenos Aires, the investigation is recounted in vivid detail. More thrilling than an Agatha Christie novel. A wonderful sketch of the ingenuity, resourcefulness, and bravery of the task force than succeeded in capturing him and spiriting him out of Argentina covertly on a special El Al flight for trial in Jerusalem.
This account corresponds in detail to Peter Z. Malkin's 1990 book "Eichmann in My Hands," which attests to the accuracy of the details of "Operation Eichmann." Mr. Malkin was the agent who actually made first physical contact during Eichmann's capture. Both books are highly readable and entertaining.
