Beware buying this "fourth edition" it is not. It is advertised as being the fourth, but it is the first. This is what I purchased "This fourth edition of Beyond the Zone System makes the science of photographic sensitometry both accessible and useful to interested photographers."

A great integration for Ansel Adams Zone System

You can learn something more about sensitometry and Zone System. A great book. It takes care of the entire process, from metering (not only with spotmeter, but even with incident meter) to the sensitometry of paper and film considering the processes as the result of just one theory, which considers that film density range has to fit paper density range. It goes deeply inside sensitometry principles. Really good.

About the Author
Skip Downing is an international consultant in the field of faculty development and student success strategies. Dr. Downing has earned degrees from Princeton University, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Santa Monica, and Carnegie Mellon University. He holds advanced degrees in both English and counseling psychology. He was professor of English at Baltimore City Community College (BCCC) for 32 years. In addition to his role as an academic instructor, Dr. Downing created and coordinated BCCC's Student Success and Learning Community Programs. These programs teach students how to apply proven success strategies to achieve their full potential in college and in life. The College Success Program resulted in a significant increase in both student academic success and retention. Dr. Downing has made numerous presentations at national conferences and conducted faculty development workshops at many two- and four-year colleges and universities in the United States, Canada, Bermuda, and the Virgin Islands. Dr. Downing's teaching, writing, and consulting are all guided by his belief that the greatest mission of any educational institution is to empower its students to live rich, fulfilling lives. Make sure you find out if you need CD and ACCESS CODE

Bought this book because it is a textbook I needed, and the book did not come with the cd or the access code which has been extremely frustrating. To purchase a separate access code now costs half of what the textbook costs.

Scummy Publishers. Lame self-help crap.

The people who run Cengage & Mindtap are evil demon people who want every single penny from you. Usually when you use this book you will also need to buy a $60 sub to an online service called Mindtap, basically online power-points because the professor teaching the course was too lazy to write their own material. Therefore you pay new prices even when you buy used.

Also, the book itself is classic College 101 BS material. Become accountable! Be a better person! Do your homework! Thanks, I really needed to pay for a $150 class + Book + Mindtap TM subscription just for you to tell me that.

Shove off, Skip. Hope you have fun with the money. Buy yourself a Porsche or something, Mr. Successful Pyramid-Scheme-Man.

the transition to college

Overall, I feel that this book is filled with a lot of detailed information intended to help the beginning college student, and perhaps others, stay “on course”. There is also an overall structure in various ways and from a variety of perspectives to help people direct their lives. The intent is to help the student see alternatives, including alternative points of view, that would be helpful for her or him. I think that Prof. Downing has done an excellent job and that students who take the time to engage with this material will benefit. We all sometimes face difficult transitions, and the transition to adulthood, much of which is captured in the rituals and culture of higher education, is one of the most difficult transitions we humans face. I read this book for some insights to help students I encounter, but I also thought that, I myself, have benefitted a little from reading the book. I think Prof. Downing provides a great deal of help to pass classes, and to graduate, and to organize one’s thinking toward adult life, adult responsibilities and adult motivations. There is a complete focus on finding a mentality for growth and creativity, and for balance in one’s life. Most of life we cannot control, and our actions are in a context of risk, ambiguity and uncertainty. But we do have control over many aspects of our inner lives, our reactions, and our recognition of the potential consequences of our own actions. Prof. Downing is very concerned with this, and with getting us to see that there are often positive, personal choices that we can make to avoid feeling like a victim of circumstances. I strongly recommend this book to awaken oneself to a growth mindset, that amounts to much more than just getting good grades or graduating (although there is ample material in the book that addresses this). I think we can all feel lost in our lives, even when we have achieved a fair measure of success, so a book to stay “on course” can be helpful to a larger audience than just students.

I wish the tutorial section was more detailed. I also noticed some of the information was out of date. It covers at least Ruby 2.1, but some of the information given was out of date, such as how Ruby handles block parameter variables with the same name as a variable defined outside of the block (defined before the block).

The Food Allergy Prevention Guide I Have Been Waiting For

I was happy to see that this book was coming out when I read a recent piece about it in the New York Post. I have four grandchildren with food allergies, and it is about time we had a practical guide to explain what the latest research recommends. The details of the author’s journey in writing the book make interesting and quick reading. Nice summaries at the end of each chapter are cleverly called “In an allergy-free nutshell.” The recipes are easy to follow and clearly labeled with the targeted allergens. This is a book I will share and recommend to all families with food allergies.

Finally a book that provides science based explanation and solutions to our growing concerns over food allergies. This book has more than meets the eye- reviewing the most current science behind not only food allergies but other autoimmune related illnesses such as asthma and eczema. As a doctor and a parent to children with eczema and asthma, I celebrate the arrival of a book that will address concerns and provide solutions for so many of us who want to be proactive and prevent life threatening food allergies. This book is also an invaluable resource for all the family doctors and paediatricians who are currently failing between the old guidance of food avoidance and new data on early exposure to prevent allergies . Currently there is almost no practical guidance on how to actually give children early exposure to allergens in a safe way. This book is the solution to confronting the food allergy epidemic in a proactive way. Parents and doctors alike will embrace and celebrate the arrival of this book.

This book was published 8 years after Johnny's death, I don't know why it took so long to put together but they did a wonderful job---the book looks great. Anyway, this is what I liked about the book

-- Johnny is honest with what he thinks and feels
-- the pictures in the book are really good
-- the book covers just about everything a fan would want

Let's face it, Johnny was the only really sane one in the band who stuck it out till the end. No offense to the other guys The only other Ramones book I would have an interest in reading is by their road manager Monte Melnick "On the Road with the Ramones". I had a good time reading this book and learning more about the Ramones and the music scene during their career. It was ridiculous that MTV and record labels/radio never gave this band the exposure they deserved.

OK, some of the things I did not like or I had a problem with: Johnny complains about the band not getting national exposure and at the same time he refuses to do Saturday Night Live in late 1977, I still cannot believe he made that decision. It also came out later that Johnny never informed Joey or Dee Dee that they had the invite to get excellent national exposure. Wow. Also, I would have liked him to discuss MTV and the band's relationship there. If you never got exposure on MTV just tell us why.

Some of the other reviewers have mentioned that Johnny seemed angry and negative and I wanted to comment on that. Look at it this way, this guy busted his ass for over 20 years and saved money like crazy only to find out he had terminal cancer less than a year after they called it quits. He had no time to really enjjoy the free time he'd worked for. How would you feel??? Dealing with Dee Dee, Joey, and Marky on an almost daily basis was no picnic---give the guy a break, and give him more respect.

Best Ramones book ever!

This book was great! Once I started reading it, I couldn't stop and read the whole book in a day. As a long time Ramones fan, it was great to get the inside story from my favorite Ramone. I was lucky enough to meet Johnny awhile ago before a concert and he was very friendly. He reached into his pocket to give me a pick but realized he didn't have one. He said to stand close during the concert and he would look for me. As soon as the first song was done, he spotted me and handed me a pick. I would highly recommend this book to any true Ramones fan.

A good read but the books construction leaves much to be desired

This is a good quick read about the Ramones and the motivating factors and idiosyncrasies behind Johnny and his band.

Johnny is pretty blunt about his recollections the rock scene, of other bands and even his own band members and music. If this book would have come out while he was alive, I'm sure he wouldn't have made many people very happy, but I don't think he would have cared. Overall, the tone of the book offers a straight forward view of how Johnny looked at life, music and the Ramones.

Most of the pictures in the book are from the early days (pre Marky) and while interesting they don't really fit the later topics towards the end of the book when talking about the end of the band. I don't think there is more than 1 or 2 pictures of either Marky or CJ in the book other than album covers. I was also surprised how little detail or thoughts were offered on the deaths of Joey and Dee Dee. Details were also scarce about the illness that ultimately ended Johnny's life. But even with these shortcomings, I found myself enjoying the book.

The biggest criticism of the book is its construction. I purchased the "hardback" book and found that it seems to be nothing more than the paperback version of the book with 2 pieces of cardboard glued to the front and back cover. These cardboard pieces have nice illustrations on the front and back, but the edges are not wrapped and have no protection. After 1 careful reading, some fraying is evident and I question the longevity of the book. There is an uploaded photo on the product page that shows some details of this construction.

At this point I don't know how to rate it. At this point I don't like it. I'm still trying to determine if I can use it as a reference, but I'm not sure. For example, the section titled "Fine Tune Your Message" is so boring I can't read it. Also, the Appendixes offer no useful information for me. But to be fair in my review I must say that my rating of this book this may be due to the fact that I already have so many great reference materials for writing form and grammar and style. If you don't have any reference materials on writing this book may be a help to you. You will have to decide for yourself.

A Perfect Reference Book

I had always procrastinated writing business letters(letters, faxes, e-mail messages) especially the important ones, thinking I could never write well enough to explain my ideas.
Now I have a concrete 6-step process + several examples which lead me to write what i want in the best way.
" in a well-written & well-formatted document:
the subject line tells the story & mentions the keyword
there's plenty of white space that provides a resting place for your eyes
Paragraphs are short & reliable
Sentences are short, simple & easy to read
Key info pops out without your having to read the entire message
Headlines direct your eye to key pieces of information
Critical information is numbered for easy reading "
