Grade 5 Up Few, if any, of the many books written for children about Lincoln can compare with Freedman's contribution. More than 80 photographs and prints illustrate the crisp and informative text. The pictures have been well-placed to coordinate with the text; captions have been written with care as well. While many of the photographs are well-known, many less familiar pictures are also included. Freedman begins by contrasting the Lincoln of legend to the Lincoln of fact. His childhood, self-education, early business ventures, and entry into politics comprise the first half of the book, with the rest of the text covering his presidency and assassination. Freedman's extensive research is apparent in the liberal use he makes of quotations from original sources (letters, contemporary newspaper articles, etc.). Freedman makes clear the controversy and vilification that Lincoln engendered and endured during his presidency. A listing of historic sites open to the public and a sampler of wise and witty excerpts from Lincoln's writings complete the book. Well-organized and well-written, this is an outstanding example of what (juvenile) biography can be. Like Lincoln himself, it stands head and shoulders above its competition. A readable biography that showed the growth of a boy to an extraordinary man

Great book for young readers. Honestly, I usually dislike any type of biographies, but this was different. The photos and drawings not only broke up the text and made the reading more inviting, but they were quite interesting in their own right. The many facts, especially direct quotes, of Lincoln were intriguing and some funny. Slavery was a “monstrous injustice.” It was a “cancer” threatening to grow out of control “in a nation originally dedicated to the inalienable rights of man.” Lincoln agreed with others that he was rather homely referring once to his “poor, lean, lank face.” When a rival called him “two-faced” during a political debate, Lincoln replied: “I leave it to my audience If I had another face, do you think I’d wear this one?” Some of the letters included reveal a man of great penmanship and great words. What struck me most throughout the book was the ending. He seemed to be aware that he would die by assassination, and accepted such. “If I wore a shirt of mail, and kept myself surrounded by a bodyguard, it would be all the same. There are a thousand ways of getting at a man if it is desired that he should be killed.” And later he had a dream that he was wandering through the White House but no one was around until he reached the East Room, where a wake was held. When he asked “Who is dead in the White House?” the answer was “The President, he was killed by an assassin.” At that point he woke in his dream. In all, a fascinating look at an ordinary man who lived a more-than-ordinary life, devoting it to leading his loved country. “…I have no other so great (ambition) as that of being truly esteemed of my fellow men, by rendering myself worthy of their esteem.” This book reads more like an adventure than a biography, but contains everything one could hope to learn from a biography.

Well put together book in my opinion.

It does say Photobiography... :-\ but still whish it had more text content. Overal I would recommend the book and buy again as a gift for another in the future or for younger children 6 to older...if nothing else it has pictures. My son is using this book for another school project and enjoys the book very much. I have added a star.

About the Author
Judith Goodenough, from the Department of Biology at the University of Massachusetts, has studied biological rhythms in creatures from planaria to finches to deer mice, and even in the green alga Chlamydomonas.

Betty McGuire is from the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Cornell University. Her research focuses on parental behavior, reproduction, and ecology of small mammals, and she occasionally dabbles in work with larger domestic animals such as dogs and horses.

Elizabeth Jakob, from the Department of Psychology at the University of Massachusetts, studies the behavior of spiders, asking questions about their learning, perception, and interactions with conspecifics and with other species. She has carried out field projects in California, Mexico, Massachusetts, and Maine.

About the Author
William E. "Bill" DeTurk, PT, PhD, is Clinical Associate Professor of Physical Therapy at Stony Brook University (SUNY) in Stony Brook, New York. He also works as a Consultant to the Cardiac & Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program at the VA Medical Center in Northport, New York.

Lawrence P. "Larry" Cahalin, PT, MS, CCS, is an APTA Board Certified Cardiopulmonary Clinical Specialist who was part of the initial 5-member panel of physical therapists who developed the APTA Preferred Practice Patterns in Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physical Therapy. He has been actively involved in clinical research and clinical practice in cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy for over 20 years and is currently Senior Clinical Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. His current research and clinical interests include the development of hypothesis-oriented algorithms for the examination and treatment of persons with heart and lung disease and better understanding breathing in persons with heart and lung disease.

I spent too much money on this Kindle textbook for class and have not been able to use it at all because the page numbers do not correlate to the actual book that my professor refers to on her powerpoints and assignments. Also, the page numbers aren't displayed when the page is shown so I have search through the entire chapter looking through the material. If you want this for your own sake it is fine, but if you need this for school do not buy/download it.

Good for CCS study

I purchased this text to study for the CCS exam to supplement my text I had from PT school (Frownfelter & Dean). A couple reviews have indicated this text is long-winded, which it is - but I appreciate that as I feel I learn more when everything is so thoroughly explained. Overal, I feel this is a fantastic text to grasp the core concepts of cardiopulmonary PT and has been integral in my studies towards my CCS. Highly recommend.

I especially like the Reader's guide

I come to this work as a non-Catholic. I've listened to Timothy Gallagher on YouTube. He has a whole series on the work of St Ignatius. I wish that I had exposure to these rules of spiritual discernment of spirits. It would have made my experience with the Spiritual Path more clear and less flying by the seat of my pants and my heart for grace. Gallagher beings these early yet contemporary teaching on spiritual discernment into contemporary language. But more importantly, he brings to them a clarity of purpose and knowledge of one who is clearly doing his work and staying live to the subject. I especially like the Reader's guide, which I usually dislike in many writings. This has the power to underscore what needs to be underscored and applied as you actually live, not as you want to be seen by the teacher.

Who's fooling who? Who's leading who? -- Letting God lead! No fooling!

The name of the book "The Discernment of Spirits" is also the name of a seminar given by Father Timothy M. Gallagher, O.M.V. throughout the country. I attended one of these in Boston. I helped organize one in New York after also reading this book. In both, Father Gallagher described how Saint Ignatius of Loyola was able to judge his experiences and tell apart those which he believed originating from "the enemy" and those from the "good spirit." Becoming "aware" of differing experiences, "worldly" and "sacred," both causing delight, both taking a strong "hold on his heart," he came to recognize, little by little, whether these things that moved him were from the "bad spirit" or from "God." So absorbed was he in his thinking, that it took a special moment of grace, where "his eyes were opened a little" and he was able to see and marvel at the difference, where the one experience would leave him "sad" and the other "happy." From his "awareness," he was able to come to an "understanding" of what was happening. From this, he was able learn to "take action," accepting the "sacred" as from God and the "worldly" as from "the enemy." Saint Ignatius was later able to describe the actions of the "bad spirit" as ones that "bite, sadden, and place obstacles, disquieting with false reasons, so that the person may not go forward." On the contrary, he was able to see the movement of God as giving "courage and strength, consolations, tears, inspirations and quiet, easing and taking away all obstacles, so that the person may go forward in doing good."

Father Gallagher gives these seminars, and no doubt wrote this book, as "a help" from the teachings of Saint Ignatius, "for everyday living." He said this "applied to persons of every walk of life and vocation." Accordingly, he used examples from the experiences of everyday people.

Growing in the "Spiritual Life" can be exhilarating. It can also have its difficulties. If we sincerely attempt to advance spiritually, i.e., to seek union with God, Father Benedict Groeschel, C.F.R., in his book "Spiritual Passages," insists that spiritual direction (of some kind) is necessary if we are to avoid dangers present in living and advancing in the spiritual life. For instance, he tells us that as we grow in the spiritual life, "we expose more and more of our real being with ... its power and potential for good or ill." Because personal honesty and consistency is necessary on our part, the infused virtues (faith, hope, and charity), and their growth, become extremely important and necessary for our own "inner balance" as we look into our own soul and the hidden unconscious, which may contain very disturbing elements. Using a quote from Archbishop Fénelon, he gives us a look at how our dark side can appear while advancing spiritually:

As light increases, we see ourselves to be worse than we thought. We are amazed at our former blindness as we see issuing forth from the depths of our heart a whole swarm of shameful feelings, like filthy reptiles crawling from a hidden cave. We never could have believed that we harbored such things, and we stand aghast as we watch them gradually appear. But we must be neither amazed nor disheartened. We are not worse than we were; on the contrary, we are better. But while our faults diminish, the light by which we see them waxes brighter, and we are filled with horror. Bear in mind, for your own comfort, that we only perceive our malady when the cure begins. So long as there is no sign of cure, we are unconscious of the depth of our disease; we are in a state of blind presumption and hardness; the prey of self-delusion. While we go with the stream, we are unconscious of its rapid course; but when we begin to stem it ever so little, it makes itself felt.

We, therefore, need "helps." We need the wisdom of experience--of a mentor--to help us through some of what can be very the confusing aspects of growth. Father Benedict insists that, "when the dark recesses of our spirit become manifest, we especially need at least a friend to share our fears, and assure us that ours is not an uncommon experience." Although a personal Spiritual Director might be the answer here, not everyone has the good fortune of finding and having access to one. There are other ways, however, that this wisdom can be sought, found, and put to use.

I believe that Father Gallagher has done a great service to the Church and to those who are striving to practice the Spiritual Life. In this book we come to know the mind of Saint Ignatius of Loyola and how he learned that he could put his own inward experiences to the test to see if they were coming from God or not--to resolve his own perplexities. He taught this to his contemporary followers. He can teach us too. He can be that friend that will assure us that ours is not an uncommon experience. He can speak to us and teach us through this book which Father Gallagher so masterfully put together for us.

Bottom line: if we can discern God's action in our lives, we can learn to do God's will!

A Practical Guide to the Discernment of Spirits.

Discernment of Spirits is good book for anyone looking to learn about Ignatius' 14 rules on the discernment spirits. Each chapter is dedicated to discussing each rule. First the rule is stated as it was written by Ignatius and then the rule is discussed in a practical sense. Each rule is further illustrated by an example or two to provide a deeper clarity into how the rule can apply to the discerner's life. The only drawback is that this reading this book is similar to reading a manual, which leaves it a little dry and slow at times. I would recommend this book to anyone who wishes to learn more about the discernment of spirits. It's worth the price, but you probably won't read it more than once. Rather you may end up using it as a reference source after your first reading.

ABC of Early Americana

This book is very informative in helping me create an authentic early home. The illustrations by the author are fabulous. I recommend all of Eric Sloan's books to anyone who is interested in learning about earlier days and how people lived. His books are wonderful! I have learned so much from Eric Sloane's books regarding how people lived their day to day lives and what objects they made to use for different jobs. A very easy read but, extremely informative.

useful architecture matured thru centuries

From the basic european tithe barns and farmhouses that matured into this country's architecure and repeats it's basic load bearing beauty across our america, and is as much a stamp of who we are, as an american eagle is. To see our architectural heritage, and America being both torn down and copied, is quite moving i'm sure to a purist such as eric sloan. i have a large library of rural american country structures, and eric sloan is not only the guru of farmhouse source material, he is the only one who really knows, reminding us to get right and keep it right, before we sell our heritage off completely, as many other unique countries have done. i am thankful that he is being published again, as i have a small fortune into his old books, in trying to track them down used and rare over the years. i re-look at them more than any others on my architectural shelf. his "an age of barns" is also a must own book.

Since much of the research behind the development of the personal computer was conducted in 1960s California, it might seem obvious that the scientists were influenced by the cultural upheavals going on outside the lab. Very few people outside the computing scene, however, have connected the dots before Markoff's lively account. He shows how almost every feature of today's home computers, from the graphical interface to the mouse control, can be traced to two Stanford research facilities that were completely immersed in the counterculture. Crackling profiles of figures like Fred Moore (a pioneering pacifist and antiwar activist who tried to build political bridges through his work in digital connectivity) and Doug Engelbart (a research director who was driven by the drug-fueled vision that digital computers could augment human memory and performance) telescope the era and the ways its earnest idealism fueled a passion for a computing society. The combustive combination of radical politics and technological ambition is laid out so convincingly, in fact, that it's mildly disappointing when, in the closing pages, Markoff attaches momentous significance to a confrontation between the freewheeling Californian computer culture and a young Bill Gates only to bring the story to an abrupt halt. What the Palo Alto Dormouse said.

John Markoff’s book traces the origins of interactive computing from the perspective of the community surrounding Stanford in the 60’s and 70’s. The account details the rise of the Stanford AI lab, and the NLS project at the Stanford Research Institute. The latter produced the “Mother of All Demos” in 1968, where lab leader Douglas Engelbart demonstrated technologies such as hyperlinked text, the mouse, copy & paste editing and video conferencing, decades before they became commonplace. Along the way Markoff describes the environment of war protest, free universities and psychedelic drugs surrounding the developers of the technology. Computers were still very much a new thing then, and the paths people took becoming involved with them were varied and unique.

This book is very much focused on the Stanford tech community in the 60’s and 70’s, and not the history of the personal computer as a whole. Important figures in the development of the PC (e.g. Steve Jobs, Bill Gates), as well as pioneering work done elsewhere are only mentioned in passing here. Silicon valley in the 60’s and 70s was a very different place then than the hyper-expensive “Internet Valley” it’s become now. As a unique and detailed account of that moment in time and place, the book tells the story well.

Fascinating History of Personal Computing

This book was a fascinating history of personal computing in America, most specifically in Northern California, most especially in the Stanford region. I swear, I had no idea that Stanford played such a strategic role in the development of the personal computer.

The book attempts to tie together nerdie engineers with counterculture LSD druggies with free love types with antiwar activists with students with hackers and the mix is considerably hard to pull off, even for a writer as accomplished as Markoff. In fact, I would say that he fails at it. Still, he tries, yes, he does. He tries a chronological approach to things and soon we have computer science engineers dropping acid in what will become Silicon Valley, leading to who knows what kinds of creativity. But Markoff really concentrates this book on two or three people: Doug Engelbart and his Augmented Human Intelligence Research Center at SRI (Stanford Research Institute) and John McCarthy’s SAIL (Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory). Another important figure is Stewart Brand, author of the Whole Earth Catalog. Finally, there was programmer extraordinaire, Alan Kay.

Engelbart had a vision and he pulled in people to create his vision. He envisioned a computer — this was the 1960s — that would augment how people thought and what they did. McCarthy also envisioned a computerized world, albeit a slightly different one. Brand envisioned a computer for every person, while Kay envisioned small computers — laptops of today — that were so easy to use, that small children could be taught to use them. And these men all pulled it off!

Engelbart plays such a large role in the book, that it’s nearly all about him, and I think that does the book a bit of a disservice. Nonetheless, it’s he who creates the mouse to use with a display and keyboard in the late ’60s. He was funded largely by ARPA and was critical in the development of the ARPAnet, the precursor to the Internet.

At some point, the book shifts to Xerox PARC (Palo Alto Reserch Center), the infamous Xerox research facility that had the most brilliant geniuses of the twentieth century under one roof and who literally did invent the personal computer as we know it to be. This was before Steve Wozniak and his famous claim that he invented the personal computer. Under Bob Taylor At PARC, Kay and the others who had shifted over there invented a graphical user interface, an operating system, a text editor (word processor), programming language, software, Ethernet for networking, a mouse, display, keyboard, audio, and a laser printer, which would be the only thing Xerox would go on to make money with. Xerox was so stupid, they never realized what they had in hand and they could have owned the world, but they didn’t. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Markoff weaves various stories of people like Fred Moore throughout the book, attempting to capture the counterculture spirit, but it seemed a little lost on me. Most of the techies weren’t overly political. Most avoided Vietnam by working in a research facility that did weapons research (SRI). Most dropped acid at some point, but very few seemed to make that a lifestyle choice. I thought it was an interesting book, as the topic is personally interesting to me, but it wasn’t the most cohesively written book and I would have expected a little more from a writer of Markoff’s stature. Still, four solid stars and recommended.

Heroes of personal computing: a social history

John Markoff tells the real story of personal computing. The heroes are not your usual suspects like Gates and Jobs, but men behind the scenes like Doug Engelbart, Alan Kay, Larry Tessler and Fred Moore. This is a fascinating story filled with crazy dreams, wild socialist experiments, free love and liberal intake of psychedelic drugs. I think the personal computer is a freak accident in the history of computer science. Nothing was obvious about its development. By all means, computers were supposed to be huge and bulky machines controlled by big industrial companies and by the government. In fact, the same nightmare scenario is now getting operational with the world wide web, where the large computing clusters, known as the "cloud", are in the hands of a few companies and spying agencies in the government.

What happened in the 1980s and 90s with personal computers was a freak development. But we need to go further back in time, to the 1960s and 70s to uncover the mystery, behind why this happened. This is where heroes like Doug Engelbart and Alan Kay come into the picture. Without their crazy dreams and vision, we would have been living in a different world. The personal computer revolution, while it lasted (remnants of this dream are still alive to this day of "big data" and the "cloud"), burned brightly in our imagination.
