There Is Power in a Union: The Epic Story of Labor in America, by Philip Dray

From the nineteenth-century textile mills of Lowell, Massachusetts, to the triumph of unions in the twentieth century and their waning influence today, the contest between labor and capital for the American bounty has shaped our national experience.

In this stirring new history, Philip Dray shows us the vital accomplishments of organized labor and illuminates its central role in our social, political, economic, and cultural evolution. His epic, character-driven narrative not only restores to our collective memory the indelible story of American labor, it also demonstrates the importance of the fight for fairness and economic democracy, and why that effort remains so urgent today.

From Publishers Weekly
This stirring study situates one of the most subversive yet profoundly American of social movements at the heart of the nation's history. Historian Dray (At the Hands of Persons Unknown) follows organized labor from the struggles of early 19th-century female textile workers to the present-day retreat of organized labor following the failed 1981 air trafic controllers' strike. His episodic narrative, structured around major strikes, shows labor's heroic age as an era of naked class warfare: strikers died by the dozens in pitched battles with police, soldiers, and Pinkerton agents, and such charismatic organizers as Eugene Debs, Big Bill Haywood, and Elizabeth Gurley Flynn braved prison and worse. The post-WWII period, by contrast, is a story of union conservatism, corruption scandals, and one rout after another at the hands of union-busting corporations abetted by government indifference. Organized labor's legacy, the author argues, is as much political as economic; it challenges bedrock American values of self-reliance while championing civil liberties--IWW speakers faced mass arrest for their public square orating--and bringing rights to the workplace. Packed with vivid characters and dramatic scenes, Dray's fine recap of a neglected but vital tradition has much to say about labor's current straits.

From Booklist
Dray traces the history of American trade unionism from the textile mills of Lowell, Massachusetts, in the 1820s to unionism’s decline in the 1980s and the current status of organized labor, which the author suggests “may have been reduced to a whisper of its former greatness.” He explores such issues as what workers in different eras felt were their rights, what kind of future they envisioned for themselves and their families, the tension that erupts between skilled and unskilled labor, the impact of immigration, and the changing role of government in labor issues. The reader learns about recent labor concerns, including decades of globalization, which allows U.S. businesses to relocate production overseas using lower-cost workers and creative personnel practices such as massive hiring of temporary and part-time employees, who do not receive pension and health benefits. He notes that security of full-time employees is also threatened in our 24/7 workplace dominated by computers and e-mail, which he dubs “the electronic collar.” A thought-provoking book. --Mary Whaley

Review

“Insightful. . . . An exhaustive and surprisingly lively account of the integral role labor has played in American life.”
—The Plain Dealer

“Spectacular. . . . Dray’s chronicle reads like a novel, filled with dramatic acts of barbarism and bravery.”
—Maureen Corrigan’s Favorite Books of the Year, Fresh Air, NPR

“Engrossing. . . . A memorable and accurate history, one that reminds us of the honorable part labor played in the quest for what its advocates grandly but not inaccurately called ‘industrial democracy.’”
—The Washington Post

“Ambitious. . . . It’s a big colorful tale, and Dray has a gift for characterization as he tells the stories of dramatic figures such as Mother Jones and Jimmy Hoffa, and dramas such as the Haymarket Riot and the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire.”
—Chicago Tribune

“One of the great values of this beautifully written book is that it shows the centrality of labor and working-class organizations to America itself. . . . Dray comes into the ring with fists flying, and he doesn’t let up for a moment. If you love Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States you’ll probably love Dray’s history, too.”
—San Francisco Chronicle

“Dray provides a grand context for thinking about labor-management relations in a society beset by bad will within millions of workplaces. . . . He is a refreshing chronicler of history.”
—Minneapolis Star Tribune

“A stirring study. . . . Packed with vivid characters and dramatic scenes, Dray’s fine recap of a neglected but vital tradition has much to say about labors current straits.”
—The Washington Examiner

“An exemplary history of the American labor movement, from its time-shrouded beginnings to its murky present . . . in the tradition of Eric Foner and Studs Terkel.”
—Kirkus Reviews (starred)

“The unending struggle between unions and big business has never been more vividly told. Philip Dray is a marvelous story teller who brings history memorably alive, and you will not soon forget the tales of murder and greed, commitment and sacrifice, that fill these pages. But this is more than history; the compelling saga of labor as a crucible for social change should prompt some honest and hard debate about what’s happening to working men and women today.”
—Bill Moyers

“Sobering. . . . This unusually interesting book delivers on the promise of its subtitle. . . . [Dray] offers a balanced and comprehensive coverage of a force for American progress that is now in danger of becoming a relic of our storied past.”
—America Magazine

“Philip Dray’s big and bold history of organized labor in America splendidly retells a story—or a multitude of stories—badly in need of retelling. The labor movement’s decline in recent decades has accompanied a great national amnesia about all that the movement achieved for the nation. That amnesia threatens those achievements, so Dray’s book is timely as well as gripping.”
—Sean Wilentz, author of The Rise of American Democracy

"Any union leader working to define and strengthen the role of organized labor in the 21st century must read There Is Power in a Union, a comprehensive and fascinating history of the American labor movement."
—Michael Winship, President, Writers Guild of America, East (AFL-CIO)

"The American labor movement has been losing ground for three decades but its history is heroic and inspiring - full of scenes of dramatic, often bloody conflict. It would be hard to imagine a better account of those episodes of collective effort, personal courage, and fierce resistance than this engrossing narrative."
—Morris Dickstein, author of Dancing in the Dark: A Cultural History of the Great Depression

"From the Lowell Mills of antebellum America to the global assembly lines of our own day, Philip Dray offers a panoramic narrative of the work and struggle, the triumph and tragedy, that has been the fate of trade unionism in the United States. His lively and insightful history belongs on the shelf and in the hands of all those who want to organize ourselves out of the social and economic predicament in which the nation now finds itself."
—Nelson Lichtenstein, Professor of History and Director of the Center for the Study of Work, Labor, and Democracy at the University of California, Santa Barbara

Brilliant Labor History - A Must Read
By Benjamin Brockwell
Philip Dray's powerful book lives up fully to its subtitle -
The Epic Story of Labor In America. Few books move with the power and ease of "There is Power In A Union."
Filled with unforgettable characters who claim monumental places in American history, Dray captures the personalities that carved the labor movement into the annals of American history. Bill Haywood, Mother Jones, Elizabeth Flynn, Albert Parsons, Joe Hill, Frank Little: some of them died, all of them made huge contributions to give American workers the benefits they have today. The unions may not be the powerful forces they once were in American history, but this book stirs up the ghosts and brings the historic battle between labor and capital back to life. I have read lots of history - few books stand up to the splendid work of this one. It is impossible to appreciate the anatomy of the labor fight in America without reading this book.

Gripping, although not entirely impartial
By Marc and Susan Osborne
Philip Dray's book is a series of stories of the larger-than-life leaders of the labor movement, and he tells those stories convincingly and stirringly, without speculating outside the historical record. I found the book very readable and even a page-turner. There are a couple limitations to be aware of, but they won't bother everyone. First, Mr. Dray is unabashedly pro-union. Even those who share his sympathies may be bothered by the overt way that he takes sides. For instance, in discussing the Kyoto climate-change accord, Mr. Dray reports that the UAW "cautioned the president against commitments that would unfairly hamstring the U.S. auto industry and possibly result in layoffs," whereas he describes the same position, taken by management, as the "well-oiled reaction of the corporations and their conservative handmaidens." This problem goes beyond Mr. Dray's choice of words: he almost never gives serious consideration to positions critical of unions. The second limitation to his work is that it is almost exclusively narrative. He tells exciting tales, but discusses only in passing the economic and social forces that form the backdrop for the successes and failures of the labor movement. Nevertheless, it's an engrossing book and a great story.

More relevant than ever
By G. Brozeit
I felt compelled to read up on my labor history following the recent (and ongoing) anti-union initiatives in Wisconsin, Ohio, and other states across the nation. Philip Dray has written a compelling history of the labor union movement that helps us to understand how vital it has been to the country and citizens everywhere. I only hope more of those working for union representation will take the time to read this book. As Dray observes in his concluding chapter, we need "to treat seriously the need for unionized workers to be aware of the larger political and economic forces affecting today's global markets, and to know the history of labor itself." Reading this book will motivate them to continue fighting for the justice working people deserve.

Dray also pays much needed tribute to the hundreds of thousands of nameless, faceless workers who made the ultimate sacrifices for their fellow workers and humanity. His vivid, compelling retelling of the stories of, for example, the Lowell factories, the Haymarket Massacre, the Pullman Strikes, the Triangle Shirtwaist Company fire and important figures like Big Bill Haywood, John L. Lewis, Walther Reuther, and especially Eugene V. Debs, make the story complete. He also doesn't shy away from the corruption and malfeasance of leaders within the movement who have done so much to damage the popular perception of unions today.

Dray makes a strong argument of how labor must work together to educate all citizens about the value of their (or, more accurately, our) cause to all Americans. He rightly laments the loss of a vital connection between labor and average Americans, "Gone missing is the communal purpose that animated America in the mid-twentieth century, leading workers into unions and creating fundamental trust in government sufficient to bring about not only the benefits of the New Deal but the advances of the 1960s, such as the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, Medicare, Medicaid, and the National Endowment for the Arts, among many other programs."

As we observe the elevation of ignorance into public policy by supporters of the "tea parties," anti-tax at-all-cost Republicans, and spineless "Democrats," let us hope that more will read this book to begin to regain the communal purpose that has served this nation well through times hard and good.

The Information: A History, a Theory, a Flood, by James Gleick

James Gleick, the author of the best sellers Chaos and Genius, now brings us a work just as astonishing and masterly: a revelatory chronicle and meditation that shows how information has become the modern era’s defining quality—the blood, the fuel, the vital principle of our world.

The story of information begins in a time profoundly unlike our own, when every thought and utterance vanishes as soon as it is born. From the invention of scripts and alphabets to the long-misunderstood talking drums of Africa, Gleick tells the story of information technologies that changed the very nature of human consciousness. He provides portraits of the key figures contributing to the inexorable development of our modern understanding of information: Charles Babbage, the idiosyncratic inventor of the first great mechanical computer; Ada Byron, the brilliant and doomed daughter of the poet, who became the first true programmer; pivotal figures like Samuel Morse and Alan Turing; and Claude Shannon, the creator of information theory itself.

And then the information age arrives. Citizens of this world become experts willy-nilly: aficionados of bits and bytes. And we sometimes feel we are drowning, swept by a deluge of signs and signals, news and images, blogs and tweets. The Information is the story of how we got here and where we are heading.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, March 2011: In a sense, The Information is a book about everything, from words themselves to talking drums, writing and lexicography, early attempts at an analytical engine, the telegraph and telephone, ENIAC, and the ubiquitous computers that followed. But that's just the "History." The "Theory" focuses on such 20th-century notables as Claude Shannon, Norbert Wiener, Alan Turing, and others who worked on coding, decoding, and re-coding both the meaning and the myriad messages transmitted via the media of their times. In the "Flood," Gleick explains genetics as biology's mechanism for informational exchange--Is a chicken just an egg's way of making another egg?--and discusses self-replicating memes (ideas as different as earworms and racism) as information's own evolving meta-life forms. Along the way, readers learn about music and quantum mechanics, why forgetting takes work, the meaning of an "interesting number," and why "[t]he bit is the ultimate unsplittable particle." What results is a visceral sense of information's contemporary precedence as a way of understanding the world, a physical/symbolic palimpsest of self-propelled exchange, the universe itself as the ultimate analytical engine. If Borges's "Library of Babel" is literature's iconic cautionary tale about the extreme of informational overload, Gleick sees the opposite, the world as an endlessly unfolding opportunity in which "creatures of the information" may just recognize themselves. --Jason Kirk

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In 1948, Bell Laboratories announced the invention of the electronic semiconductor and its revolutionary ability to do anything a vacuum tube could do but more efficiently. While the revolution in communications was taking these steps, Bell Labs scientist Claude Shannon helped to write a monograph for them, A Mathematical Theory of Communication, in which he coined the word bit to name a fundamental unit of computer information. As bestselling author Gleick (Chaos) astutely argues, Shannon's neologism profoundly changed our view of the world; his brilliant work introduced us to the notion that a tiny piece of hardware could transmit messages that contained meaning and that a physical unit, a bit, could measure a quality as elusive as information. Shannon's story is only one of many in this sprawling history of information. With his brilliant ability to synthesize mounds of details and to tell rich stories, Gleick leads us on a journey from one form of communicating information to another, beginning with African tribes' use of drums and including along the way scientists like Samuel B. Morse, who invented the telegraph; Norbert Wiener, who developed cybernetics; and Ada Byron, the great Romantic poet's daughter, who collaborated with Charles Babbage in developing the first mechanical computer. Gleick's exceptional history of culture concludes that information is indeed the blood, the fuel, and the vital principle on which our world runs. (Apr.)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Acutely sensitive to the human drama involved in pioneering thought and discovery, best-selling science and technology writer Gleick has developed an epic sense of humankinds quest for mastery of information, the vital principle. In this tour de force, the first book to fully chronicle the story of information and how it has transformed human thought and life, Gleick follows the path from the ingenious codes used by African drummers to the invention of the alphabet and writing, which made possible deep analysis and logic, the bedrock for information theory. As Gleick elucidates the roles cryptography, libraries, quantum physics, and molecular biology play in information science and tracks the cresting waves that rapidly delivered the telegraph, telephone, radio, television, computer, and Internet, he vividly profiles a compelling cast of geniuses. Theres prescient Charles Babbage and witty, surpassingly gifted Ada Byron King, logic master George Boole, and the too-little-known Claude Shannon, whose elegant solutions include designating the bit as the smallest possibly quantity of information. Gleick is equally illuminating in his explications of such forces key to information as uncertainty, entropy, memes, and randomness. This is intellectual history of tremendous verve, insight, and significance. Unfailingly spirited, often poetic, Gleick recharges our astonishment over the complexity and resonance of the digital sphere and ponders our hunger for connectedness. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Destined to be a science classic, best-seller Gleicks dynamic history of information will be one of the biggest nonfiction books of the year. --Donna Seaman

If you work in computers/software/information sciences, this should be a must-read
By Kim Crosser
As someone who has been in computers and information sciences since 1970, this was an amazing and entertaining book.
I knew a lot of the history, having lived some of it, but a lot of this was new to me.
Very well-researched and presented in a clear and highly readable style. This volume clearly covers the concepts and development of theories of information. It covers both theory and practice and whether you are a beginning computer programmer or an information science theorist, you should find something in here that you didn't know and that will awaken you to some new ideas.

If you like this volume, try "Godel, Escher, Bach" by Douglas Hofstadter. That is an eclectic and entertaining mix of mathematics, art, and music philosophy, tying together apparently dissimilar disciplines into a mind-bending tour-de-force.

is information without meaning ,meaningful?
By Victor V. C. Patton
As a history the book is superb. It documents the flood of data in a quantifiable manner. As a theory it vacillates between information without meaning and information with meaning. This problem was created when Shannon's paper on communication theory was referred to as information theory. This confusion is avoided if it is clearly understood that Shannon's work applies only to the symbol patterns in a communication channel. The encoding table, created by human intellect, creates the pattern carried by the symbols. Shanon enters at this point and puts a scientific and engineering foundation under the design of the communication channel which moves the code pattern from sender to receiver. in my opinion there is no information in this pattern until it is processed by the receivers decode table. This may be in the form of a symbol driven machine where the decode table is designed into the machine by the intellect of the engineers doing the design or if the symbolic pattern is to be decoded by a human being, then typically the decode table converts the pattern to the launguage of the receiver. Reliable communication occurs perfectly only if the sender and the receiver have exacly the same definition for each and every word. The book would have been easier to follow if the assignment of meaning, for which there is no physics, was carefully seperated from the transfer of symbols in a communication channel for which there is physics and engineering principles which Claude Shannon masterfully docummented. This reality is lost because of the familuarity and confidence we each have in the use of the language we were raised with.

only one thing wrong...
By Kindle Customer
This book was hard to get through but only because there was so many incredibly important ideas. I read this months ago and I am still thinking about it. The part I disliked? That there was almost no actual communications research presented. All (or all but a tiny bit) came from engineering or computer science. University communications departments have ceded the entirety of modern communications theory and practice to others. And the worst part is that they don't even care or seem aware of that fact. So... my review of the book? Read it. It is fascinating and one of the most important books to read if you want to get a good, basic overview of the ideas that will shape the next 50 years or more. If you are affiliated with any university department of communications you should be ashamed for a bit and then start fixing the last 50 years of irrelevancy this book clearly has exposed.

Double Entry: How the Merchants of Venice Created Modern Finance, by Jane Gleeson-White

“A timely, topical, readable, and thought-provoking look at the history and legacy of double-entry bookkeeping.”―Elif Batuman, author of The Possessed

Filled with colorful characters and history, Double Entry takes us from the ancient origins of accounting in Mesopotamia to the frontiers of modern finance. At the heart of the story is double-entry bookkeeping: the first system that allowed merchants to actually measure the worth of their businesses. Luca Pacioli―monk, mathematician, alchemist, and friend of Leonardo da Vinci―incorporated Arabic mathematics to formulate a system that could work across all trades and nations. As Jane Gleeson-White reveals, double-entry accounting was nothing short of revolutionary: it fueled the Renaissance, enabled capitalism to flourish, and created the global economy. John Maynard Keynes would use it to calculate GDP, the measure of a nation’s wealth. Yet double-entry accounting has had its failures. With the costs of sudden corporate collapses such as Enron and Lehman Brothers, and its disregard of environmental and human costs, the time may have come to re-create it for the future.

A Great Informative Read
By The Peripatetic Reader
This is not your ordinary history book. In Double Entry, Gleeson-White transforms what is ordinarily the dull and boring subject of accounting -- think of all those Monty Python jokes about Chartered Accountants -- and turned it into an exciting, lively, and relevant history. Gleeson-White's narrative is lively, highly readable and well-research in an otherwise obscure area. She has woven this lively read into a unique insight of the role the Double Entry accounting system has played in making and ultimately un-making the modern world, financial and otherwise.

The Double Entry system of accounting is a relatively new phenomenon. In the thousand years since accounting has been in existence, the Double Entry system made its appearance only five hundred years ago, in Northern Italy, devised by Luca Pacioli. A brilliant polymath, Pacioli associated with the movers and shakers of the times such as Leonardo DaVinci, and others. In a critical chapter,

Glesson-White's book may be regarded as a short, introductory history of accounting. The Double Entry system emerged at a crucial time in history. It made its appearance following the invention of the printing press, the rise of the Venetian Merchant class, and the introduction of the Arabic-Vedic number system. Gleeson-White asserts that the Double Entry system fundamentally changed the way we regarded the world. Everything now was quantified, reduced to numbers. People began to be regulated by clocks and time; drafting maps became commonplace; vison was corrected by eyeglasses; attitudes to capital, interest and money changed.

But "All That Glitters is Not Gold." There is another facet to Geeson-White's book which is unique and refreshing. The book is also a critique and criticism of the ways accounting has been used by financial organizations. The Double Entry method changed the way we viewed the world by quantifying everything into debits and credits. It has not only defined and improved the modern financial world, it has also given rise the greatest excesses and scandals. The book begins with a speech by Robert F. Kennedy during his 1968 Presidential campaign, where he questions what the GNP, the Gross National Product, has come to mean and measure. In the stirring words of RFK, the GNP does not measure a nation's happiness, well-being, nor it natural resources, although it should. Fast-forwarding forty-five years later, Geeson-White describes those efforts at revising both accounting methods and the way in which the GNP is measured. The book ends with RFK's cautious and visionary words. Geeson-White shares that caution.

Glimpsing the soul of Double Entry
By Andrew Maffei
I have a close friend that alerted me to the importance of Double Entry Bookkeeping (DEB) in society six years ago. He had several personal stories to tell about his early work life as an apprentice at General Electric in Lynn MA back in the 50s and how the double-entry pattern pervaded all departments -- machine shop, drafting, parts-assembly, etc. He introduced me to Pacioli, Pacioli's collaboration with Da Vinci, and the insistence that the double-entry pattern is something more fundamental to human-beings, their society, and science. It's something that goes beyond commerce and finance.

My gut has always told me that my friend was onto something. Jane Gleason-White's well researched book has provided me with stories, examples, and an over-all context for how the double-entry pattern has evolved and shows how it has been woven into various aspects of society. She shows Pacioli as an expansive collaborator -- working with many key people in addition to DaVinci.

By going back and examining the history, context, and personalities of double entry we begin to understand it's "soul". In addition to describing the history of this well-developed technology, capable of keeping track of complex transactions and showing the current state of a business organization from various perspectives the book exposes some of the thoughts and principles that are it's underpinnings. Many today see Book-keeping as dry and mechanical. This book shows a welcome richness and depth to the subject.

As we see too often today, systems of policies and technologies can be easily compromised and subverted once the original intent of such systems are intentionally ignored or unintentionally forgotten. The current state of the world's financial and internet systems attest to this. The appearance of Jane Gleeson-White's book was quite timely for me. It has helped to inform me of how double entry bookkeeping emerged as well as the need of applying over-seers (accountants, CPAs, auditors, etc.) over time as double entry became more important to business and had greater impact on people's lives.

Our increasingly complex world now needs a new form of oversight. New extensions to our accounting systems are needed to protect us all against people who finance and encourage the gaming of the system by joining forces with others with advanced knowledge of technology used in performing and accounting for all sorts of financial transactions. I think it is crucial that these extensions be developed while considering the timeless principles, history, and intent of double-entry technology as documented and then taught by Pacioli. I feel fortunate that we now have this book as a reference to help guide society in these efforts. Thank you Jane.

Double Entry (AKA Debit/Credit)
By My Opinion
This is an amazing story of the birth of the accounting method known as "double entry" that is still used today. As an accounting major in college, I remember hearing the name Luca Pacioli, but none of my accounting courses dwelled on the man or the time in history that he occupied. After working in the accounting profession as a certified public accountant and as a corporate financial officer with a publicly-traded corporation, I have finally learned of the origins of my profession.

The history that the author explores is fascinating. From the development of double entry accounting to aid the merchants of Venice to the spread of knowledge throughout Europe as a result of the printing press, the reader will be lead on a journey on the development of capitalism as we know it today.

In my opinion, the author has been somewhat harsh in judging the auditing profession, because of some major accounting frauds, which have been highly publicized. Having been a part of the profession and having worked on the other side of the table, from my view point, the profession, in my opinion, is highly ethical and I am proud to have been a part of it. Having said that, I do agree that there have been some real blunders on the part of certain individuals, intentional, as well as unintentional, which have cost investors a lot of money.

The only puzzling thing about the story is the author's criticism that the double entry accounting system isn't being used to account for the depletion of the natural resources and harm to the environment in calculating Gross National Product. The story opens with a speech by Robert F. Kennedy wherein he comments that GNP does not account for the destruction of our nation's environment, the health and welfare of our citizens, and a number of other intangibles that make life worthwhile. At the end of the book the author devotes a whole chapter to this subject.

At first, I found the discussion annoying; however, after thinking about it, I found it to be thought provoking. I am still thinking about how double entry accounting could ever account for such events. Generally, speaking, "cost" is the basis for almost all accounting transactions. There are times when judgment is needed to make allocations between accounting periods, such as the computation of depreciation or the calculation of loss reserves, but the underlying concepts are based on "cost". So what would be used to account for the destruction of our environment or the depletion of the country's natural resources? I don't think the cost of the Louisiana Purchase would provide any meaningful information. Perhaps, this is an assignment for the academics in our universities.

Again, I found this whole discussion puzzling and started to wonder if the author was only writing about the history of double entry accounting to establish a platform to discuss a more esoteric topic. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the book.

This up-to-date guide focuses entirely on performance optimization for macOS and iOS. If you're an experienced iOS / macOS developer you'll find this book to be like an extended conversation with a long-time expert
By Gary W. Longsine
This book is well written, thoughtful, and accessible to beginning developers. If you're new to the platform this is a must-read. If you're an experienced iOS / macOS developer you'll find this book to be like an extended conversation with a long-time expert. It's more than helpful and the author's candor is refreshing. Marcel Weiher has opinions based on deep experience, and he knows the difference between an opinion and an objective fact. This book is rich with helpful examples showing how to circle in upon a performance issue which might not be obvious at first blush. Developers, if you work on a team you'll want your managers to read this book, too. (I am the CEO of illumineX, inc, maker of custom software for large enterprises and consumer software for macOS and iOS. I'm going to give a copy of this book to every developer on my team.)

lots of useful information. Could use better editing

Very talented writer, lots of useful information. Could use better editing: more than a few typos and the level of the book bounces around a lot.

Respected Engineer, New Classic Treatise
By JJ
Marcel is a former Apple engineer who's thoughts and opinions are strong, well-informed and are still well-respected within that large pool of excellent software minds. This book is awesome and if you intend to do anything on a macOS or iOS (or any other Apple platform) do buy and read this book. Wisdom and experience and yes strongly worded pragmatism throughout.
I will add to it that Mr. Weiher is well known as an advocate of all of the things SmallTalk brought to Objective-C and you should understand the perspective he presents is that Objective-C is a strong and flexible language. Understanding this will make more sense in reading the book.

International Human Rights and Islamic Law (Oxford Monographs in International Law), by Mashood A. Baderin

This volume is a comprehensive and authoritative comparative analysis which asks whether Muslim States can comply with international human rights law whilst adhering to Islamic law. The traditional arguments on this subject are examined and responded to from both international human rights and Islamic legal perspectives. Through this analysis, it offers a clear vision of the realisation of international human rights within the application of Islamic law.

Review

"Mashood Baderin's International Human Rights and Islamic Law is a monumental contribution to an area that needs more scholarly contributions from intellectuals and scholars of Islamic law.... This book will be very illuminating for students, administrators and judicial personnel not only from the western world. Besides being knowledgeable in Islamic law, scripture, and Hadith, Baderin shows a remarkable grasp and understanding of international human rights law.... There is a pressing need to shift the intellectual discourse from that of a clash of civilizations to that of a dialogue among cultures. Baderin's work could pave the way to this alternative discourse."--The American Journal of Islamic Social Sciences
