so this was a big deal to me (and also something towatch out for)

This guide is a must have for anyone prepping for the CLEP Algebra Exam. First of all, this guide is a 2017 edition, so I know that it has the most up to date content. Many of the other guides that I saw were from last year and beyond, so this was a big deal to me (and also something to watch out for). Actually, this guide is pretty thin--definitely much less intimidating than the huge, heavy guides that some of my friends were carrying around! This guide is well written and easy to understand. This guide is broken up into sections, so you can go right to the area that you want to focus on without having to do a ton of searching or reading the guide from cover to cover to get the most out of it, which saved me a lot of time! I also thought that the practice questions were very similar to those on the real test, so I felt more confident about my score. I would recommend this guide to others who are looking for a general idea of what to expect and a good guide for a great price.

Great book and we are glad we are reading this book before we marry - starting a step family is hard work and this point provided many real life examples, ideas that are practical and provides solid background on where people come from reading biological families- all will keeping Christian beliefs at the forefront.

Brian L. Ott is Associate Professor of Media Studies in the Department of Communication at the University of Colorado Denver. He is the author of The Small Screen: How Television Equips Us to Live in the Information Age (Wiley Blackwell, 2007) and co-editor of It's Not TV: Watching HBO in the Post-Television Era (2008).

Robert L. Mack is a PhD candidate in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. His writing has appeared in The Journal of the Fantastic in the Arts and The Journal of GLBT Family Studies.

A very readable textbook

I assigned this fine book in a class for the first time this semester (Fall, 2014), and it has worked quite well. The authors are especially good at explaining complex theoretical orientations in the field of media studies. It's accessible and engaging, and not at all simplistic. I would recommend this textbook to others who teach communication theory, cultural studies, media criticism, etc.

The writing of this book was started years ago when UHCI and OHCI were just surfacing. Then in recent years when xHCI surfaced, I once again took interest in USB and spent the time needed to finish this book.

I very much enjoyed this project and continue to work with and show interest in the USB concept and hardware, as in recently releasing the 2nd edition in late 2014 with updates, corrections, and addition information.

About the Author
Benjamin David Lunt has been programming computers since 1984 and has always enjoyed the hardware side of the spectrum. He has programmed many different types of programs, mostly for DOS and other minimal operating systems, as well as a few programs for the Windows family.

About 13 years ago, he started to read up on the Universal Host Controller Interface (UHCI) and got hooked on the USB concept. He has been programming for USB ever since. One of the more known projects has been the USB support for the Bochs Emulator.

Programming is not Ben's only line of work. He has been in the building trade since 1991, and enjoys remodeling homes.

He also enjoys hunting, fishing, and is an active member of his local Boy Scout troop.

Make your own choices.. PERFECT !

Today I got this book in the mail and I was in shock. OK.. I'll explain. the first book of his 8 volume series I ever had in my hands was his Input and Output devices book. Thin little book, but a whopper of info. So I thought, OK all his books are this size. But man was I wrong. I got his his USB book Volume 8 in today and its 5 TIMES THE SIZE !! I LOVE IT !!! I looked through this, page by page, chapter by chapter. Not only does he explain how things work, but his charts and diagrams put it all into perspective. Really trying to teach how the USB works. I have read others. No charts, no graphics, no tables. And they really didn't help you understand. But David's book is spot on. And on top of this, the CD source code for the book, he will send you upon request. I LOVE IT !!

Chapter 3. UHCI Hardware
Chapter 4. UHCI Stack
Chapter 5. OHCI Hardware

Step by step he shows you how to talk to your USB thumb drive, or USB Hard Drive. Devices I didn't even think about that I would eventually want to talk to, such as my USB Mouse. Which any hobbiest knows, if you reboot your computer into your own OS and you don't have a USB driver for your mouse, it won't work. So THANK YOU DAVID for this wonderful book With this book, you can make your own choices as to how to talk to the USB hardware, and not rely on Linux or Windows or any other OS.... PERFECT !

I bought and read the kindle edition of this book. It initially explains the PCI interface for usb host and continues with the 4 distinct usb controllers. It actually explains every aspect that you should know to write the usb driver from scratch without any os dependencies. A book that makes USB easier

This book really does what it promises ("communticate with the USB, with no Operating System to get in the way").
First it introduces you to how to detect the controllers (UHCI, OHCI, EHCI, xHCI) on the PCI bus, then it describes the stacks.
It continues with device enumeration, how to use HID devices, Mass Storage Devices, not to mention the other things.
The CD-image need to be requested from the author which I got in less than a day from him.
This book will definitely speed up the OS development.
I am an experienced assembly and C programmer, though. As the book states in the Introduction, some knowledge of C and assembly is necessary ("You may also need to have a fair knowledge of C and Intel x86 assembly to use and understand the source code.").

About the Author
Shari Seidman Diamond is the Howard J. Trienens Professor of Law and Professor of Psychology at Northwestern University in Chicago and a research professor at the American Bar Foundation. She has published more than 100 articles in behavioral science journals and legal publications and has lectured widely to scholarly and judicial audiences. Professor Diamond has testified in American and Canadian courts on trademark surveys and juries and her publications on surveys and juries have been cited by federal and state courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court.
Jerre B. Swann practices intellectual property, antitrust, and trade regulation law at Kilpatrick Townsend in Atlanta. He has served as lead counsel, or special counsel as to survey and expert witness issues, for major brand owners in trademark, false advertising and trade dress actions in judicial districts throughout the United States. He received the INTA President's Award, the Ladas Memorial Award, and the Volunteer Service Award for the Advancement of Trademark Law. He has authored or co-authored more than thirty law review articles and book chapters, and has spoken at more than thirty national and international seminars, on trademark, survey and expert witness subjects.

Essential for Trademark and Advertising Law Professionals

I read only a couple of books per year. As very long-form scholarship, books usually require big blocks of time to read (and I rarely have such blocks), and I typically find the payoff isn't worth the time investment. As a result, it's rare that I read a book, rarer when I like a book, and exceptionally rare when I think a book is worth recommending to you.

Yet, I can hardly contain my enthusiasm for the 2012 book, "Trademark and Deceptive Advertising Surveys: Law, Science and Design," edited by Shari Seidman Diamond and Jerre B. Swann and published by the ABA's IP Section. It may be the best book I've read in years.

Why do I like this book so much? It's the *perfect* legal resource guide. The chapters are written by the leading experts in the field--names you most likely recognize, including William Barber, Jerre Swann, Bruce Keller, Shari Seidman Diamond, Itamar Simonson, Jacob Jacoby and many more. In each chapter, an expert explains how he/she handles an aspect of the consumer survey process and why he/she makes certain professional judgments. It's like having am initial consultation with, or some private coaching from, the leaders in the consumer survey field, except that they aren't billing you by the hour and they give you citations for your deeper investigation if you want. I know I'm a hardcore geek, so my experience may not be representative, but I found this book a page-turner that I couldn't put down. Every page was packed with a golden nugget or two of insight, page after page, chapter after chapter. I'm not exaggerating at all when I say that I found the book gripping.

Of course, you won't be able to do consumers surveys on your own just by reading the book (you'll still need to hire an expert), but you'll be able to have a more intelligent discussion with your expert and evaluate and supervise their professional choices better. After reading the book, you should be able to save thousands of dollars in the costs of a consumer survey and increase the likelihood that the $100k+ you invest in a consumer survey will yield useful results.

If you deal with consumer surveys in the trademark or advertising context--which means pretty much every trademark and advertising law professional--this book is a must-have. Unfortunately, the book is priced for professional purchases, not the consumer market. Still, the book will more than pay for itself after your first consumer survey using it.

If it wasn't for this easier version, I wouldn't have done as well on my 1st year nursing test on it. My assigned textbook was just way to heavily detailed. This book gave me what I needed in a simplified, easy to remember version.

About the Author

Chava Frankfort-Nachmias is an Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. She is the coauthor of Research Methods in the Social Sciences (with David Nachmias), coeditor of Sappho in the Holy Land (with Erella Shadmi) and numerous publications on ethnicity and development, urban revitalization, science and gender, and women in Israel. She was the recipient of the University of Wisconsin System teaching improvement grant on integrating race, ethnicity, and gender into the social statistics and research methods curriculum. She is also the coauthor (with Anna Leon-Guerrero) of Social Statistics for a Diverse Society.

Anna Leon-Guerrero is a professor of sociology at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. A recipient of the university’s Faculty Excellence Award and the K. T. Tang Award for Excellence in Research, she teaches courses on statistics, sociological theory, and social problems. As a social service program evaluator and consultant, she has focused her research on welfare reform, employment strategies for the working poor, and program assessment. She is the coauthor of Social Statistics for a Diverse Society and Essentials of Social Statistics for a Diverse Society (with Chava Frankfort-Nachmias).

This book takes a VERY painful subject and boils it down into understandable bits that are much easier to swallow than you would expect from a statistics textbook.
I've taken dense math classes before - and had terrible books that treat the material as dense and incomprehensible (which makes the class even worse, obviously).
This book, however, approaches the dense and incomprehensible material in a way that shows they understand how horrible the material is for most students who are being required to take a statistics class. They boil the stuff down so you actually get the concepts instead of just cramming into your head insane statistics formulas that look like something you need a 205 IQ to understand. You still need the formulas, but you walk away understanding why. A hint for students - put the formulas into an excel spreadsheet so you don't need to memorize them, and then hope you have a professor who encourages you to do so so you can use Excel when you take your tests.

Poorly made.

The formatting of this book is anything but helpful or conducive towards assisting the student to understanding the material. The textbook is like a teacher that is monotone. Simple things such as having each page having the notation to indicate what chapter you are in does not exist. When answering the questions at the end of the chapter it is a difficult task if you are trying to use the textbook to understand and answer the problem. Many typos exist across the textbook, too many. I should have been paid to purchase this textbook. It is fit to be used for a fire or target practice.

For SOC 345 Class

Book is required for my SOC 345. Really easy to understand and followed through. I enjoy the pratice exercises in the book, even though they aren't reqiuired for class, it helps me getting a better understanding of the material. Also it help refreshes my mind, since I can go back and see what I have done.

Nothing bad to say. Needed it and its helping me move along smoothly in my class.
