Alex Meadows

Alex Meadows has worked with open source Business Intelligence solutions for nearly 10 years and has worked in various industries such as plastics manufacturing, social and e-mail marketing, and most recently with software at Red Hat, Inc. He has been very active in Pentaho and other open source communities to learn, share, and help newcomers with the best practices in BI, analytics, and data management. He received his Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Chowan University in Murfreesboro, North Carolina, and his Master's degree in Business Intelligence from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Adrián Sergio Pulvirenti

Adrián Sergio Pulvirenti was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1972. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Computer Sciences at UBA, one of the most prestigious universities in South America.

He has dedicated more than 15 years to developing desktop and web-based software solutions. Over the last few years he has been leading integration projects and development of BI solutions.

María Carina Roldán

María Carina Roldán was born in Esquel, Argentina, in 1970. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Computer Science at UNLP in La Plata; after that she did a postgraduate course in Statistics at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) in Buenos Aires city, where she has been living since 1994.

She has worked as a BI consultant for more than 10 years. Over the last four years, she has been dedicated full time to developing BI solutions using Pentaho Suite. Currently, she works for Webdetails, one of the main Pentaho contributors. She is the author of Pentaho 3.2 Data Integration: Beginner's Guide published by Packt Publishing in April 2010.

This was a good introduction to PDI

This was a good introduction to PDI. Some of the examples were hard to follow, and you had to fight your way through them. Once you did though, the book really teaches you what you need to know about PDI.

Exactly what she wanted

Sometimes it's hard finding an "ology book that is exactly what you wanted. You read the reviews and they say "beautiful pictures" "everything you want to know about..." But the never tell you that it has tabs to pull, envelopes to open, dragon skin to feel, etc. well this has all of that!! We love these "ology books and have a few of them and lete tell you... they are great!

An Excellent and Comprehensive Introduction to Dragonology!

This peculiar old manuscript of arcane knowledge is a real treasure in the right hands.

The little details and the scrapbook-like assemblage of this introductory field guide is both intimate and charming.

Pros:
- Nicely, even elaborately detailed, with elegant but lucid prose and text.
- Includes various samples of actual artifacts, as gathered on location.
- Speaks with authority, yet welcomes and encourages the novice.
- Beautifully illustrated.
- Reasonably priced.

Cons:
- A little large for field use. A smaller companion field guide is needed.
- Will not resist moisture (dew or dragon breath) or tolerate high humidity (fog or dank caves) well. A laminated field guide is needed.
- Does not appear to be, nor claims to be flame retardant. A flame retardant field guide is needed.
- A little sketchy on the nutritional needs of dragon hatchlings. Amplified nutritional information would be welcomed.

wonderful book for those of us who truly believe in dragons, but in general all people can appreciate the beauty

This book was the first in the Ologies books I have purchased.
I got it for my daughter who is 6 and she is a HUGE HUGE dragon enthusiast she truly believes the are real. So I though me being a dragon lover myself I would see what all the fuss was about the ratings were high on it so I said "why not".
All I can say when we go this book in the mail is that I was speech less! It was far more gorgeous a d detailed than the pictures or advertising shows. My daughter had been asking me for days when will I get my dragon book? When? When?
So finally I got to show it to her when it got here and she was so happy. So I purchased another book in the series called Monsterology and when that one arrived it was every bit just as gorgeous as this book. So I am going to slowly buying the whole Ology collection because my whole family is crazy about anything mythical or amazing even thing that normal folks consider not real, well we usually think that there is some truth to them and maybe someday science will discover some of these creatures. Who knows, my belief is that anything is possible because we live on an amazing planet with so many things to discover that we don't even know halfof what all is out there.
So keep up the great inspirational books we love them and kids love them. Real or not I just love reading your books and I'm 29 so that says something my hubby is 42 and he is in love with these books.

True treasure for the lover of nature

Fantastic book. I bought this for a child in foster care who wanted to learn more about his Native heritage. However, I discovered that my children and I loved this book. The simple and thoughtful explanations of how nature might speak to us in our daily lives was refreshing and enlightening. As one example, I used to have a hummingbird charm in my car and I found that the hummingbird in Native culture is associated with with healing and being a healer. I am in the healing and medical profession and this resonated with me. Please consider this book for your children who might also enjoy the symbolism of nature (think those kids who also enjoy the symbolism of literature and Greek mythology). This is a true treasure for your home.

So Much Good Stuff

What an incredible book! I learned so much from it and it was worth every penny I paid for it. It is filled with useful information that sometimes seems far-fetched but when I started doubting, I'd remember just who wrote this book and remembered that this author is a holy man, shaman, medicine man, whatever you want to call him. He knows. He's been taught all of this since he was a child and has been brought up in the traditional ways.

I took the time to do the exercises with the stories that were told and after I looked back at what I had written, it was like an epiphany. I had to read some of them several times, which he recommends you do anyway, and I was like, "I get it!" I was able to make the connection on most of them. A few of them, I am still thinking about.

In the book, he talks about birds, animals, insects, reptiles and what they mean when you see them and how to handle them if they make a sudden, unwanted appearance inside your house. I will give you two examples of my own personal experiences:

Just yesterday, I was standing out in my garage smoking a cigarette when a tiny little spider lowered himself into my line of vision. My first instinct was to give him a fatal thwack. But no. After reading that part of the book, I knew he might be trying to tell me something. Spiders are messengers so as insane as this is going to sound, I asked him what was going on. Of course, he didn't answer me but now I am looking for something that I may have blown off before. He lingered there for a minute then he went back up and I haven't seen him since. But not all spiders are good.

Another thing that totally made sense to me is the section on cockroaches. Never in my life had I had to live with cockroaches until I bought this house and then they came into my house from next door after the exterminator had gone in there and done his job after the slothful people who'd lived there before had been evicted and moved out. We definitely had a problem with them so we called the exterminator...twice. He came and he did his thing and they were gone for a little while but then they came back but not as badly. We took matters into our own hands then and got ourselves some Roach Prufe and sprinkled that around. That seemed to do the trick, too. But while all of this was going on, people were coming and going out of our house and some of them weren't the good kind of people. Once we got rid of the bad people, the roaches went away. A few of them were friends of our sons and one was a person who just pretended to be a friend of my mine and my husband's. Once these people were out of our lives, the roaches were gone and we haven't seen any since.

I took this book very seriously and I learned so much from it. I now understand the sacredness of certain places on Earth even though I had a great idea before. I understand how we are all connected which really wasn't a revelation to me but this reinforced it for me. I no longer think that animals are a step beneath us. They are our equals and they are our relatives and should be treated with respect. They will talk to you if you choose to listen. Nature will talk to you if you listen.

I also understand some of the ceremonies and someday hope to make my own medicine wheel. I also want to dream creatively. All of this and more is in this book.

Yes, I am part Indian but probably not enough to make a big difference. But you don't have to be to understand this book. You just have to open your mind and your heart and be open to what's being said. Some will think it's hokey or just a big put-on but these stories have been passed down from generation to generation and have substance and standing.

This is a life changing book and I know I will be referring back to it often.

While I'm preaching this, I guess I would recommend Native American Wisdom, too. My oldest son is 11 and just got done reading his copy of Native American Wisdom and told me it was probably the greatest book he's ever read. Native American Wisdom is required reading for both of my sons when they turn 12 and I'm thinking I might be adding this book to their short list of required reading.

A Great Go-to Guide!

The author gives lots of examples and shares a good amount of knowledge about the subjects he covers. The book is very easy to read and is formatted in a very logical way. I really liked how the book brings a new level of meaning and understanding to some of the things you see everyday. After reading and even re-reading about the symbols I am not only more aware but actually feel a difference in my everyday life. It may sound hokey to some but more than a few times in the past month these symbols have come to me and communicated with me much like the author describes. Even if you don't believe in the Spirit World, it is interesting to learn about the various cultures and their beliefs. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to better understand the World around them.

Social Media Marketing

My lukewarm review could be a result of my inaccurate expectations. However, I was looking for more of a how-to guide and this book is a strong textbook. What that means is that instead of being a step by step, hour a day program to run a social media marketing campaign, this book describes the process, shows you what is out there, gives you some good questions to ask yourself about your marketing program . . . and then you are on your own. If you are looking for a guided tour of the social media environment and the concepts and philsophy behind setting up a program of your own, this is a good guide. It is well written. In fact, the opening chapter is an outstanding overview of the evolution of media from the newspaper, radio and TV eras to the social media era (perhaps worth the price of the book, alone). The hour a day, I guess, refers to the homework time you'll need to devote to answering the questions - because the substance, as it relates to your own campaign, is answered by you and implemented by you. If you are looking for a ready-to-use, hour a day program for actually building and implementing your social medis campaign, this is not the book for you.

Great Social Media How To Broken into Bite Sized Pieces

This book is broken into bite sized pieces which allows you to put yourself on a self-paced course of social media. The author does a great job in the first chapter of sharing the evolution of television advertising and how it morphed into what we now know today as social media. This is an all -encompassing book that any person or company can use to roll out a full marketing plan and how to incorporate traditional media marketing, print marketing and social media. It teaches you how to track social media and the importance of synergy between the marketing dept. and the operations department.

If you're brand new to social media and don't really understand it, just start at chapter one and work your way through. If you're more experienced, you can skip to the back chapters for more of the how to's and strategies. Its laid out so you can learn in just 1 hour a day and it will take about 3 months or you can do multiple chapters and "to do lists" in one sitting and implement a social media campaign in just a couple of weeks or less.

Solid plan, but adaptability and integration are needed

The book is a great resource for understanding how social media can influence consumers. Understanding touchpoint analysis and network value allows the marketer to see that social media is much more valuable to the brand than just raising awareness. Social media helps give the brand and consumers a forum to interact and build trust.

The book is also very strong in guiding the marketer through a step-by-step plan, in logical order, to design and implement a marketing plan for social media. The chapter worksheets and case study insights help the content become real and useful. If the marketer spends considerable time working through this book, there will definitely be a positive gain. Even if the marketer is not able to design and implement a huge social media campaign, they should at least be able to better understand different aspects of the campaign and begin building on a small scale.

The main weaknesses of the book is that it is a one-size-fits-all approach to designing a social media marketing campaign. Not all marketers will be able to use this same approach because a company's abilities and brand may differ drastically from another. Also, businesses need to adapt quickly to changes. This approach may need to change as social media and technology change very rapidly.

The book also seems to point to the idea that traditional media forms are not effective because consumers avoid it. This is not true. While the book does state that traditional forms of media will never be obsolete or non-existent, it does not make the point that social media and traditional forms of media must be extensively and methodically integrated into a single marketing plan. The authoer seems to create a social media plan that is separate from similar plans for traditional media, when the two need to be closely related. It did not seem to me that there was any emphasis that both social media and tradtional forms of media marketing need to have a consistent message.
