Exceptional writing, frustrating characters

I cannot begin to tell you how angry this book made me, and I've read so many books so they just don't do that to me anymore. Yet, this one somehow did. SPOILER ALERT for those who haven't read the book.

There's no doubt that Ahdieh is very, very talented. The writing is beautiful, exceptional. The author creates these wonderful scenes and imagery that makes you feel like you yourself are there by Shahrzad's side. I could taste the food, smell the marketplace, see the dazzling beauty within the palace. Every word Ahdieh writes is like a gem. She uses metaphors, allegories, and other tools of writing to show you what's going on instead of just telling you outright. The bad side of writing like this is sometimes scenes get confusing and you don't really know who's doing what, or what's really going on, but that's all here and there. The writing, I think, is the only thing that saved this book. Ahdieh is a beautiful writer, and can weave words together in a way most writers cannot even dream of doing...though I do not think she is a splendid storyteller, and there is a huge difference between the two. Let me explain.

As far as Khalid, he's on par with Christian Grey in the fact that he's supposed to be smoking hot but is about as attractive on the inside as a molding onion. For the first 3/4 of the book, his bland personality simply bored me, but by the last fourth I was screaming at him every time I turned a page. He seriously reminds me of a guy I used to know, who complained constantly about how horrible his life was and acted like he got the worst hand life dealt to anyone, just to make himself seem deep and interesting. It doesn't help that everything bad that happens in the book, the curse, all the girls dying, is still ESSENTIALLY HIS FAULT. Every single person that dies or gets hurt is a result of Khalid's selfish nature and self loathing, and he doesn't even care enough to even attempt to make himself likable in any sort of way, just goes around the palace with a woe-is-me attitude even though everyone else is suffering way more because of his actions. I don't get what the big craze is these days about "tortured, haunted" leading males in fiction who hurt women because they're "damaged." For me, it's really unattractive to see a guy waltzing around hurting people because somebody did him wrong in the past, and a woman chasing after him trying to tame the monster. Shazi's relationship with Khalid is on par with Stockholm syndrome and/or an abusive relationship. He literally almost chokes her to death, and she's still palling around with him.

Shahrzad isn't much better. The most we know about her is that she can shoot a bow, she's angry all the time, and that she's trying to kill the guy who murdered her best friend, which she epically fails at for no reason because...I don't know...he's hot? I have no idea why Khalid and Shazi fell in insta-love, because I have no idea who they are as people in the first place. If you took them out of their terrible situation and put them in a normal life, they'd be complete strangers to you because there's nothing about them that makes them unique or different. For as beautiful as the descriptions are and the writing is, the characters are a blank canvas, only painted with a few strokes. There are so, SO many romantic and beautifully detailed scenes that would've stolen my breath away IF I could stop wishing the people I was reading about would just die already, and that's what really makes me upset. This book could've been a masterpiece, but the execution fell flat at the characterization. She did everything else right, but sadly, this crucial point causes the book to fail.

It doesn't help that at every turn, there's a new character to memorize, and a new name to learn. For as short as this book is, there are way too many characters. I know I've made this mistake in my own writing, but I expect better from a book published by Putnam (though I really shouldn't...the Cahill Sisters Chronicles, also published by Putnam, also had an array of 20+ characters for 3 short books).

It just makes me so mad things turned out this way. I was looking forward to this book for a long time, and it was such a big let down. The world, the writing, everything was so beautiful. But when you've got these distasteful, bland characters running around in this beautiful world, I really don't care to keep reading. Gonna think long and hard if I want to chance it with the sequel.

I wanted to like this book so badly...but I didn't.

The Wrath and the Dawn is a YA retelling of 1001 Arabian Nights. Or, I should say, a retelling of the Arabian Nights' frame story, of a brave young woman who volunteers to be the bride of a serial killer ruler who murders his new brides the morning after their wedding night. Needless to say, this backstory is a little problematic for the modern reader. In "The Wrath and the Dawn", the nesting stories that the original is famous for take a back seat to the main story, a romance between the latest bride Sharzad, and the killer Caliph Khalid. There is a convoluted explanation for Khalid's mass murder spree which comes out late in the novel, but the main character's early attraction to a man who murdered her best friend (and many other young women) left a bad taste in my mouth. Overall, it was too reminiscent of a storyline where a rape victim falls in love with her assailant.

The book has solid writing, and a lovely amount of detail that evokes a sense of medieval Arabic life and culture. What it lacks are characters that fit into that world. Sharzad comes across as more whiny than heroic, and her bizarre interactions with her handmaiden don't help. Khalid as a tortured romantic soul who -gosh darn it!-doesn't want to be a mass killer of young woman, didn't cut it for me. Sharzad's other heart throb, Tariq, who dashes around on an Arabian horse with a killer falcon, had more potential, but his character simply walked away from a major conflict at the end, leaving me confused. In fact, the second half of the book, between the unlikely actions of the characters and the improbable plot twists, left me bewildered. To make matters worse, the novel is actually book one of a trilogy, not a fun thing to discover as you turn the last few pages.

Despite the fantastic background and setting, I'll be giving the rest of the series a pass. There's no explicit sex (in fact, I think some well-written sensual scenes might have added to this book) and a standard amount of sword slashing and violence.

I am not at all familiar with 1001 nights, so this story was entirely fresh for me. It was a bit slow to start, but not at all uneasy to read. I loved Shazi right from the start, though Khalid took some time to grow on me. I love the banter going on between Shazi and her handmaiden Despina. I was pretty confused by the insta-love and really could not see why Shazi was falling in love with Khalid, but by the end of the story I found myself saying "aww" to myself a lot. Which I really never do. Towards the end, I found some of the most beautiful words of love I've read in a while, so much that I had to stop and write them down in my reading journal. Now that I've finished the story, I'm totally sold on this romance and am pretty upset by what seems to be about to happen! I did find the chapters focusing on magic to be kind of strange and, well, just really weird. Hopefully that will be explained a little more in book 2. Overall, it wasn't perfect but I definitely enjoyed this story. It's a keeper in my library for sure.

What do Harvard Professors teach experienced and successful business leaders? What is it that someone who has successfully led a large organization can learn from going to Harvard for a week each year for three years?
Professor Cynthia Montgomery teaches strategy on a course titled the Entrepreneur, Owner, President (EOP) program. If you are a successful entrepreneur, owner or chief executive this book will allow you to participate in that programme from the comfort of your favourite reading chair and derive much of the benefit. What is missing is only the opportunity to interact with other successful executives.
The book aims to simulate the personal development aspect of this Harvard experience.
Montgomery’s approach presumes that you know what strategy is and have participated in and possibly even led the company’s strategy initiatives.
Her starting point is that strategy has devolved into a mechanical activity. Overtime it has becoming a ritual that focuses on formulation rather than implementation. The focus is on getting the analysis right and recording the plan. The plan is then submitted the board, and the process is complete.
The role of the Chief Executive as the leader of the strategy has faded. Divisional heads are charged with the execution and the Chief Executive gets back to the multitude of other burning issues.
While there is definitely value in engaging a professional strategy facilitator to manage the process, it is the Chief Executive how must own the strategy. It is he, or she, who must approve or disapprove the strategy. Failing to take personal ownership of the strategy is an abrogation of the duty expected of a Chief Executive.
The signoff of the strategy document is cannot be the end. Strategy never unfolds successfully without the will and commitment of the Chief Executive. The process requires constant guidance in the unfolding, and firm decision-making at critical points along the way.
What is wrong with the strategy process is the disconnection between the role of the Chief Executive and the person in the position of the Chief Executive. Strategy needs to be something deeper and more meaningful to you, the Chief Executive, she believes.
What makes this book unusually valuable is the focus on the person and personality of the Chief Executive in the strategy process. This is not a “nice to have” soft issue, it has material and financial consequences on the business that are generally overlooked.
In the first exercise described in the book, EOP participants consider an investment decision.
A highly successful, second generation hardware manufacturer Masco is sitting on a huge amount of cash. They consider investing heavily into the furniture industry where returns are typically low and the industry is relatively unsophisticated. Masco has a superb management capability that has led to great financial success. In their industry, they have taken unsophisticated products and turned them into valuable brands.
The investment Masco will need to make is in the order of $2b. What would you do?
After much consideration the majority view of the participants, (a view repeated in every EOP programme,) is to invest in the furniture industry. EOP participants are smart, bold, and courageous people, confident of their ability to deal with tough problems successfully.
Montgomery then reveals Masco’s decision. They decided to invest in the dull furniture business confident in their ability to turn it around.
However, the result of the decision was the destruction of shareholder wealth with their furniture businesses eventually sold for a mere $650m. There was significant damage to the reputations of Masco’s leadership and a loss of confidence in their ability.
What went wrong? The confidence every good strategist needs can so easily mutate into overconfidence.
Warren Buffet puts it succinctly: “When a management with a reputation for brilliance tackles a business with a reputation for bad economics, it is the reputation of the business that remains intact.”
Further into the book, Montgomery ask the question, “Does your company matter?” What would happen if you closed today? Would your customers suffer any real loss? How long would it take them, and how difficult would it really be, for them to find another company that could meet those needs as well as you did?
Then she presents an example of a company in the furniture industry that does matter, that would be missed if it disappeared, IKEA. This low priced, high value furniture retailer has added, and continues to add meaningfully to the lives of millions of middle class families. It affords an unrivalled style at prices they can afford that is unparalleled by any other supplier. They would be missed if they closed, they matter.

A book on strategy and not microeconomics.

Cynthia has a writing style that is very interesting, she presents her main concepts using real world stories with enough details for the reader to get involved and understand the point. What she addresses is closer to what a strategist like Bruce Henderson would discuss than Michael Porter. She is distilling the essence of being a strategist. Other authors like Michael Porter is closer to Joel Dean ( a microeconomist) , for he is more like a specialized theoretical microeconomics professor that detailed the ideas/concepts related to the behavior of firms in the economic arena.
Her book will help inspire professionals, business leaders to sharpen his/her ideas to develop his own strategies for their companies. For leaders trying to find their way out of a complex situation, it will bring a lot of value and clarity of thought.

So much more than a book on strategy

Don't be fooled by some of the reviews that say this is nothing more than the basic MBA material or simply a book on Strategy. Cynthia Montgomery has captured the very essence of what is required to move a business to the next level and while it might be based on years of teaching and research at Harvard Business School it the message that underlies each story, tool and technique that is missed by the majority of MBA students.

The book has a very easy to follow and great style. Analogies are well thought through, develop into the teaching method nicely and follow the case-in-point style of learning. In fact I found myself often relating each of the examples back to my own business and realising where the fundamentals of the business need to be worked on. But back to the book...the message is relatively simple:

- Have a clear, well defined and meaningful purpose;
- Create alignment within the business;
- Understand the fundamentals that drive success with in alignment with the purpose;
- Remember that strategy development start on day 1 and never ends...there is simply no end point where strategy is 'completed'.

The wrap up of the book is simple...to be a strategist you must first be a leader...strategy never ends, it is a continuous cycle process where we have a core purpose, a driving forces, a reason for living and we consider how that reason changes the world. This makes it easy to change, adapt and move through the challenges that a competitive landscape offers. From Gucci to IKEA, both businesses had their fair share of challenges and issues...but the ever evolving art of strategy lead them through to be the businesses they are today. Often thanks to the leadership but always thanks to the purpose!

So yes...this appears to be MBA 101 but think about it...how many MBA graduates do you know that would not land a job in your business, be able to lead and develop a business to great heights or simply are text book managers but not strategic leaders. The Strategist is aimed squarely at anyone that thinks they know all about strategy because they have an MBA...after all many great strategist do not have an MBA yet we teach their thinking and refer to their success in many MBA classes. This is a great book and yes...I have an MBA and still found myself in awe of the author, the approach and the learnings I took out of this book.

A must read for every business person and one that I am sharing with my Leadership Team!

About the Author
Judith A. Lewis (Ph.D., University of Michigan) retired in 2008 from Governors State University, where she served as Professor and Chair of Addictions Studies and Behavioral Health. A licensed psychologist in Illinois, she is a past president of the American Counseling Association (ACA) and the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors. She is co-author of MANAGEMENT OF HUMAN SERVICE PROGRAMS, Fifth Edition; COMMUNITY COUNSELING: EMPOWERMENT STRATEGIES FOR A DIVERSE SOCIETY, Third Edition; and SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELING, Fifth Edition (all Brooks/Cole Cengage Learning).

Thomas R. Packard teaches administration and social policy courses in the School of Social Work at San Diego State University and conducts research and consultation projects through the Academy for Professional Excellence in the SDSU School of Social Work. For twenty-five years he has been an organization development consultant specializing in human service and government organizations, including six and a half years in the City of San Diego's Organizational Effectiveness Program, which he managed for one and a half years. He has published articles on his consulting projects and the results of his research in the areas of organizational effectiveness and the quality of working life. He has been the director of two community-based human services organizations and has been a program evaluator for the County of San Diego. He received his doctorate in social welfare at UCLA and is a Certified Social Work Manager.

Michael D. Lewis, Executive Director, Educational World Charities, Chicago, is Professor Emeritus of Counseling and Psychology at Governors State University. For more than thirty-five years he has consulted with numerous national and international corporations with regard to the implementation of their employee assistance programs. As the originator of the community counseling concept, he has advised educational institutions around the world in countries as diverse as Israel and Botswana. He has co-authored two other Brooks/Cole texts.

Description not accurate

The information on this book said it was in good condition however when it arrived the pages were worn from water damage. The book is also worn on the sides and many of the pages are permanently folded. The description was not accurate as to the books actual condition. This book is in poor condition. After meeting with my professor it was advised that we purchase and keep the book however this copy is in such bad condition that I would not keep it.

Great overview of HS program structure!

This text is exceptionally priced for the content. Much of the information I have learned in my experience as a human services professional, yet many of my classmates were new to the field and noted it was very helpful. I especially enjoyed the chapters on budgeting and program evaluation, as those are my weakest areas due to lack of experience.

Hidden anger that comes out indirectly—through inappropriate, unproductive action or even inaction—can undermine relationships with friends, family and colleagues at work. Murphy, a psychologist and member of Congress, and Oberlin (coauthors of The Angry Child) closely examine how this kind of anger, called passive-aggressive, can undermine sufferers and their relationships and make life generally miserable. The authors also examine the problems faced by the victims of passive-aggressive behavior, who often don't understand why the angry person is acting as he does: "The nastiest thing about hidden anger is that it sneaks up on you... much like a boa constrictor that gradually tightens its grip until it's too late for you to get away." About the Author
Tim Murphy, Ph.D. has spent four decades as a psychologist and advocate for better healthcare. In January 2015, he began serving his seventh term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Before that, he served as a Pennsylvania State Senator. He is co-chair of the Mental Health Caucus and the author of landmark reform legislation, called the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act, HR 2646 of 2015. It was created to help solve shortages in mental healthcare, improve research, allow families to have a helpful role in care, and provide treatment before tragedy.
Congressman Murphy has received praise for this from many professional organizations as well as media outlets from coast to coast, including CNN, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Seattle Times, San Francisco Chronicle and Pittsburgh Post Gazette. Dr. Murphy serves as a commander in the Navy Reserve Medical Service Corps at Walter Reed National Military Center in Bethesda, Maryland. He has an active license as a psychologist and in years past had a private practice in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he also worked with families at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Does passive-aggression make you a bad person?

Full disclosure: I haven't finished this book. The reason I'm going ahead and rating it is that I might not finish it. The reason for that is that I realized that the tone is not a comfortable one for me. While the authors do seem to know their stuff (thus the 3 stars), the book is written in a way that makes the passive-aggressor feel like a "bad guy." And while this behavior could certainly be classified as "bad," it is hard enough recognizing that about yourself and trying to work through it. Maybe I am a "bad guy" in this regard, but I don't think I ever consciously decided to be passive-aggressive or behave badly towards others, and I am trying very hard to change. Another book I bought on Passive-Aggression takes a more compassionate approach and while it is still difficult reading in that I am discovering some unpleasant things about myself that I know I need to work on, it is less painful to read and therefore I am finding it easier to keep going.

If you are dealing with a passive aggressive person in your life, you need to purchase this book immediately. The book explains in great detail passive aggressive personalities and offers tips, suggestions and skills to help you deal with their personality disorder. It is also an excellent book for a passive aggressive person coming to terms with the concept that they have a problem and offers suggestions on how to make their lives better and reduce their behavior. This book will not solve your passive aggressive problem, but it sure is a great place to start to understand what passive aggressive behavior is and how to diffuse some of the day in day out issues that drive people crazy/

This has been a huge help, personally, to take control of how I react to my "targets" when they're attacking me with threats. I see the behavior on tv, in the store and by people just belittling their family members to make themselves feel worthy or whatever they're needing at the moment. Get the power back in your life or learn about your habits passed down to you from your elders to heal your own heart.

About the Author
Richard K. Betts is the Arnold Saltzman Professor of War and Peace Studies in the Department of Political Science, the director of the Institute of War and Peace Studies, and the director of the International Security Policy Program in the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. He is also Adjunct Senior Fellow for National Security Studies on the Council of Foreign Relations, acommissioner to the National Commission on Terrorism, and former staff member of the Senate Intelligence Committee. His research interests include national security, military strategy, and international conflict, and he has published numerous articles on foreign policy, military strategy, intelligence operations, conventional forces, nuclear weapons, arms trade, collective security, strategic issues in Asia, and other subjects.

Great Product: But read between the lines!

Book was in Horrible condition, pages were all stuck together not even as initially described.
This is very bad business for a bookstore whom intends on making their profit off of offering educational material to customers in conditions that are not even as described by the seller!

The Book brand new is great and if you don't mind buying a book with all the pages stuck together and you can get through all that: the material in this book offers some great educational insight drawing parallels between the Cold War and the Peloponnesian War. The author of this Book, Richard K. Betts, has served on the Senate Armed Forces Committee and is currently an associate professor at Columbia University. There Betts is in charge of an International Public Policy Security program that seems to be interrelated with his work as a CIA security coordinator, on active call offering "his advice" on security measures and tactical approaches in combat and war overseas with "terrorists."

This book has to be read with a keen eye and proper lens in order to fully understand the authors position when describing theoretical approaches to Global Politics and ideologue that influence world leaders and actors in society, past and present.
The author may have hidden motives that will not be discussed in an academic setting, such as: a Zionist stance and positions on world politics while explaining differing theories referring to: Conservatism, Liberalism, Realism and Neo-Realism. So far I find it ironic that Zionism has not been discussed, since fluctuations in oil prices and GDP play a major role in our domestic economy along with the Israeli's isolating themselves from the changing region of the Middle-East. It's very conspicuous that the author would leave these issues out of the text when describing what key theories have major impacts to Global politics.

The author jumps to the current economic crisis while un-digging the past of the Cold War and that of Liberalism in our modern society. Leaving the readers to suggest that liberalism and democracy is a failed solution to world politics as a successful society like ours may suggest in moderate terms. It is ironic that the author fails to suggest the role that U.S. tax paying citizens money has currently on financing the Zionist regime of Israel, as they receive the most international aid of all nations in the world from the U.S., and dictators in neighboring countries who received similar aid to oppress their people before and after the Arab Spring occurred. There is also much left to debate about the War in Iraq and Afghanistan that the author leaves open for explanation.

concise & clear

This statistics book got me through the muddiness that was my Statistics lectures. When you can't understand the words coming out of your professor's mouth, dive into this book for clarification. It's strategic, using efficient stages to set up your knowledge base for the next piece of statistical information. I'd never taken a statistics class before, and I can't claim to be brilliant at math, but this book helped me pass my class with an "A". (So did my TA tutor, god bless him.)
