Writing in the June 1965 issue of theEconomic Journal, Harry G. Friedman and Schwartz marshaled massive historical data and sharp analytics to support the claim that monetary policy--steady control of the money supply--matters profoundly in the management of the nation's economy, especially in navigating serious economic fluctuations. In their influential chapter 7, The Great Contraction--which Princeton published in 1965 as a separate paperback--they address the central economic event of the century, the Depression. According to Hugh Rockoff, writing in January 1965: "If Great Depressions could be prevented through timely actions by the monetary authority (or by a monetary rule), as Friedman and Schwartz had contended, then the case for market economies was measurably stronger."

Milton Friedman won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1976 for work related to A Monetary History as well as to his other Princeton University Press book, A Theory of the Consumption Function (1957).

About the Author
The late Kara Tippetts was the author of The Hardest Peace (winner of the 2015 Christian Book Award® in the Inspiration category) and blogged faithfully at mundanefaithfulness.com. Cancer was only a part of Kara’s story. Her real fight was to truly live while facing a crushing reality. Since her death in March 2015, her husband, Jason, is parenting their four children and leading the church they founded in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Unexpected

I started reading " the Hardest Peace" yesterday afternoon and rarely put it down until I finished it this a.m. Now a little background. I have been following Kara's blog for awhile. When she was here in WNC, her once hometown in the Blue Ridge, Appalachian Mtns., I attended her conference. I purposely didn't buy the book as I thought," I've heard her speak, followed her blog. This will be just another book to languish on my dusty bookshelves." Nay Nay, Nannette, I was wrong. I felt a strong urge last week to read this and also purchase one for a friend who personally knew Kara. The book is, objectively, a good read and much more. Of course, as you would surmise from Kara's background based, it is based on Christian teachings. If you are not a Christian or have had a rocky road with Christianity, please don't let that you prevent you from reading this book . This is a voice "in the wilderness" in my multitude of opinions. This is a raw and utterly transparent heart speaking to mothers, wives, women, men and husbands who at anytime experience the loneliness of the human condition......Truly, I was astonished at what I read.

God's story of grace and love written throughout the beautiful life of Kara Tippetts

The Hardest Peace is a must read for everyone. This is not another ‘cancer’ story. This is God’s story of grace and love written throughout the life of Kara Tippetts. It is a story that will not only touch your heart, but cause you to begin to look at your own life’s story through the lens of God’s unfailing love.

Through Kara’s beautiful telling of God’s faithfulness in the hard story for her life, she shows us the importance of embracing God’s calling in our life; letting go of the ‘idol’ image we have created of what our life should look like and trust Him.

She demonstrations the importance of showing BIG love in small, every day moments like folding laundry for her kids, snuggling tight to read a bedtime story or time spent across from her spouse with a good cup of coffee. It all matters. Every. Single. Moment.

Kara shares her hurts, fears and impossibly difficult moments with such love and grace that it moves us to begin to be honest about our own hard that we often want to keep hidden.

With encouragements like, “Hard is not the absence of God's goodness.” Kara helps us to know God’s goodness is near—even in hard places.

This book is a gift

The Hardest Peace is Kara's story from start to present. She gives us a snapshot of the messy of her life prior to faith. She introduces us to her husband and their story. She lets us peek in on her four children and the wonder of them in her life. She brings us to Colorado Springs from North Carolina and we hear of how tough moving to Colorado was from day one. She talks about the life she and Jason thought they were going to live and the life they have had to accept. She is candid about the life her family will live without her and how she is trying to prepare all of them for that day and time. Kara is dying. The cancer is not going to turn back and retreat at this point. All treatments are to buy as much time as possible. Just a few weeks ago she shaved her head for the second and last time. Kara knows she will die bald. The treatments ensure that.
Kara shares from a place of deep peace and grace. She can do so because of the big love she has experienced in Christ. She is thoughtful in her story and she invites the reader in with some questions at the end of each chapter. She doesn't want just people who have cancer, for example, to read this book. She claims, and I agree, that this book is for anyone who has experienced, is experiencing, or will experience hard. Well, that's everyone. We cannot escape the hard of life, the sharp and rough edges of people and circumstances. We cannot escape it but we can have peace, hard peace, in the midst of it. Unless you have walked through hard with peace you can't speak with any authority on it. You have to experience it to share it honestly and without cliches. Kara has the authority to show us and tell us that it is possible to have hard peace when life isn't so gentle. She has been well equipped to speak on this topic.
Kara's book, The Hardest Peace, is a gift for the reader. The message Kara has lived to share is for anyone who has faced hard and that is each of us.

Set in her native St. Petersburg, Russia, Simons's latest thick novel (after Tully, etc.) focuses on a WWII love affair. As the story opens, Tatiana, the youngest member of the Metanova family, is just 17; she still shares a bed with her older sister, Dasha. Not long after the country goes to war with Germany, Tatiana meets Alexander, a soldier, and sparks fly. It turns out, however, that Alexander is the same soldier Dasha has been crowing about. Possessed of a strong sense of family loyalty, and living under conditions that permit no privacy, Tatiana refuses to interfere with her sister's happiness, but the attraction between Tatiana and Alexander proves too powerful. Complicating matters, another soldier, Dimitri, has information that could destroy Alexander, and Dimitri likes Tatiana, too. In order to protect both Dasha's feelings and Alexander's life, the star-crossed lovers become part of a deceptive quadrangle as war intensifies around them. Taking her title from a tragic poem by Alexandr Pushkin, Simons skillfully highlights the ironies of the socialist utopia. Despite the novel's sprawling length and its seemingly epic scope, the nearly single-minded focus on dialogue between Tatiana and Alexander leaves other character development shortchanged and the reader with the impression of a peculiarly tiny canvas. Nave and occupying the Cinderella role in her family, Tatiana is certainly a survivor though one who finally outstays her welcome. While her love story is often both tender and fierce, it is also overwrought and prolonged past the breaking point. The Soviet Union suffered immensely at the hands of Germany during World War II, and no Russian city suffered more than Leningrad. The Germans laid siege to Leningrad in 1941, and the resulting horror and chaos gave rise to many dramatic tales of deprivation and heroism. Simons tells one of them here. Tatiana Metanov's life is typical of the way most people lived in Leningrad in the late 1930s and early 1940s: her family is crammed into a small living space, and their days consist of endlessly waiting in various lines for supplies. On the day Germany invades the Soviet Union, Tatiana meets Alexander Belov, a lieutenant in the Red Army. The story of their love takes the reader through the whole, awful span of Leningrad under siege. Unfortunately, the novel is overlong, and, at times, Simons shifts awkwardly between her fictional story and real events. But readers who persevere--those who love long novels for the sense it gives them of "living" with a book--will come to care about these characters and their plight and will take away a definite sense of what the siege of Leningrad actually meant on a personal level. Simons is the author of the best-selling Tully (1994), and heavy publisher promotion will draw attention to her new novel. Brad Hooper

Beautiful love story despite the war.

Wow. This story was compelling and complex. Simons' writing was superb. She had me right there. I loved reading about the history of the war from the Russian pov. I felt like I was in Leningrad during WWII watching Tatiana and Alexander fall in love through secrecy, through poverty, through starvation, through people trying to keep them apart. Their love was the one bright spot while their world was crumbling around them.

Tatiana was an amazing heroine. She was a slip of a girl, just seventeen years old. Yet she was strong, and generous, and clever, and brave, and always an optimist while her family was anything but. She just kicked butt all the way to the end. She's a survivor and I loved her.

Alexander is a Russian officer. He's courageous, and complicated, and hot-headed, and he loves Tatiana fiercely. But they definitely have obstacles. A major one being Dimitri. He is now up there with Joffrey Baratheon and Black Jack Randall as the most vile human beings in fiction.

My only complaint about this book is the monotony. I felt there were a number of scenes where the author droned on and on. I wanted her to move on. It could have been much shorter. Otherwise, I thought it was perfect. I'm looking forward to diving in to book two.

Disappointing

The descriptions of WWII in Russia were eye-opening for me, as I hadn't previously read anything set in Russia during the war - plenty of literature in the UK, France, Germany, and so on, but not Russia.

What I didn't like were how naive (and, ultimately, annoying) Tatiana was and how controlling Alexander became of her, especially towards the end. He controlled what she wore, what she did, who she talked to, and so on. This book was recommended to me on a feminist reading list - historical fiction novels about and/or by women - but it wasn't feminist at all, in the end. Tatiana was completely consumed by her relations with Alexander, who ended up being emotionally abusive, manipulative, and brooding. He wasn't desirable or loving at all.

Just over halfway through, the gratuitous sex - though not totally unwelcome in some literature I enjoy - detracted from the story completely. I don't want to give away story details, but I stopped reading it about 3/4 of the way through when all that kept dragging on and on. I was consumed by the start and continuation of the war - again, some descriptions of WWII in Russia that were really compellingly written - but I was simply bored when things started looking "up" (at least in Simons' mind) for the characters. I wasn't interested in seeing how their relationship continued.

Characters in this novel are too simplistic, too immature - more like some kind of fan fiction than an edited, published novel. They are totally innocent, totally good, or totally evil. As others mentioned, descriptions can be tediously repetitive (food, kilometers, other details). I found myself telling family members about what I was reading, and realizing that I simply didn't care about or feel connection to any of the characters. For me, that is where I drop a novel, especially if I am more than halfway through it and have given it hearty effort. This was definitely a disappointment.

Wonderfully descriptive

I have had a really hard time deciding how to rate this book. I went into the book with incredibly high expectations. I just knew that I would fall in love with this book largely because I had been told that I would love it. I didn't love it. I liked it though and there were parts of it that I liked a whole lot. There were some sections of the book that didn't work for me nearly as well. I did enjoy reading this book overall despite my issues.

This book is set in Russia during World War II which is a really interesting period of time to read about. I did really enjoy the setting and the descriptions relating to the war. That was really the best parts of the book for me. The parts of the book set in Leningrad that deal with the hunger and desperation of the characters was incredibly done. This book would have easily been a 5 star read for me if the whole book had that same level of impact. I also really liked the last section of the book that was more war focused.

There were other sections of the book that didn't work for me nearly as well. Tatiana seems really immature during the first section of the book and kind of drove me nuts. She is young at the start of the story and it really showed. I also had some issues concerning Alexander's relationship with Tatiana's sister, Dasha. Alexander is actually Dasha's boyfriend during much of the book so Alexander and Tatiana keep their feelings for each other a secret. I didn't care for this aspect of the story at all.

This was a book that I think may have been a bit too long. I found myself growing tired of some parts of the book. The third section of the book that really focuses on the romance between Alexander and Tatiana was nice but it went on for too long in my opinion. During that part of the book, they were so removed from the war that it really changed the impact of the story. I think that the first section of the book could have been cut back as well.

I would recommend this book to fans of historical romance. There were parts of this book that were really strong and I did enjoy it. I do plan to continue with the trilogy soon to see what else happens.

Flawless In Content...Killer in Formatting

This is a fantastic book, filled with great advice. I almost didn't give it 5-stars because of the poor formatting, but why create the karma. : ) If anyone at Shakti's publishing firm is reading this, much of the text appears squished together on a Kindle Fire. Much of the wording has no space between them, which makes it difficult to get through. It's probably that it was formatted way back when, before eReaders were really popular. It's to the point where at times you can't even read sections. But I obviously chugged through it because of the powerful messages. That says something about this book!

William L. Shirer's THE RISE AND FALL OF THE THIRD REICH is a monumental study of the 20th Century's most frightening moments. Now, 53 years after the end of World War II, it may seem incredible that our most valued institutions, and way of life, were threatened by the menace that Hitler and the Third Reich represented. Shirer's description of events and the cast of characters who played such pivotal roles in defining the course Europe was to take is unforgettable.

Benefiting from his many years as a reporter, and thus a personal observer of the rise of Nazi Germany, and availing himself of some of the 485 tons of documents from the German Foreign Office, captured by the First Army, as well as countless other diaries, phone transcriptions, and other written records, meticulously kept at every level by the Germans, Shirer has put together a brutally objective account of how Hitler wrested political control of Germany, and planned and executed his 6 year quest to dominate the world, only at the end, to see Germany go down in flames.

The combination of personal recollection and amassing of historical evidence distinguishes this book as one of the great historical works of any time. For instance, he recounts that, from his apartment in Plosslgasse, in Vienna, he personally witnessed how perhaps half of Vienna's 180,000 Jews bargained their way to freedom in 1938.

Shirer explains that Hitler believed that France and England were too weak to pose much of a threat to his ambitions to subjugate Czechoslovakia, and later Poland. The momentary relief of Russia as a threat to his domination of Europe as a result of the flurry of diplomatic activity that proceeded his invasion of Poland is fascinating. There is no relief, throughout his narrative, of the brutality of Hitler and such a large contingent of Germans who populate this narrative.

Although 1600 pages long, this is such a richly rewarding experience for anyone who wants to come to grips with the mysterious question as to how this menace to civilization ever came into being, much less was sustained for as long as it was. The answer, unfortunately, is that most of Germany, for a whole host of reasons, embraced Nazism and the fanaticism that Hitler engendered.

For another book that deals with this problem, why so much of Germany lent its support to Hitler, I heartily recommend HITLER'S WILLING EXECUTIONER'S, by Daniel Goldhagen, published by Vintage Books. Although filled with perhaps more statistical details then the non-professional historian would need, this book helps to adumbrate the themes in Shirer's great book.

A classic book for students of World War II in Europe

I first read The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich in high school about 3-4 years after it was published. My best friend had read it, and he pushed his copy on me, urging me to read it too, which I did. My second reading was recently. With more than fifty years between readings, the book came across very differently this time. Since the book was published in 1960, there have been hundreds of documentary and docudrama films made about the rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party, the war in Europe, and the downfall of Germany. There have also been hundreds of books on the subject, many of which I've read. So on my second reading, there wasn't much of the material that I wasn't already fairly familiar with. But in 1960 when the book was published, there wasn't a lot of in-depth material on Germany and the Third Reich. Shirer did a bang-up job of documenting the rise of Hitler and the Nazis from his firsthand view, the road to war, early victories, and the eventual downfall due to the Soviets turning the tide of war in the east, and American and British troops closing the noose from the west.

The book was an instant bestseller in 1960, and now, 56 years later, it's still a big seller. Don't be put off by the book's length, it's well worth reading.

A lesson in history like no other.

Written by a man who lived through the years leading up to the Nazi Party's birth, growth, eventual election to power and all the subsequent insane and inhuman events that followed; a journalist keeping detailed diaries and then supplementing with years of detailed research through vast amounts of other documents, diaries, court records, interviews. Amazing! To read this book is a formidable but engrossing task and the end result is enormous satisfaction that I have truly learned an honest and complete historical lesson. My parents lived through WWII in Latvia, my father was drafted into the Nazi Army to fight the Soviets on the Eastern front and was severely wounded during the occupation, my mother escaped from Liepaja with the fleeing Nazi troops abandoned there on the day Berlin fell. The emotions which this book raised then resolved are indescribable as I finally felt I had learned all there was needed to know about what my parents went through because they would speak none of it. They hated the Nazis, they hated the Soviets, they could speak of none of it.

Great work, terrible editing for Kindle release

This is a very interesting work -- I can hardly put it down. The problem is that the editors who "prepared" it for Kindle release, didn't. There are entire sections of the book out of place. You go along reading about complex and critical issues, and all of a sudden you are in an entirely different place and time dealing with a completely unrelated subject for a page or so, and then hop back to where you started. It is really irritating. I guess I think it's worthwhile to buy the book on Kindle, if only for the convenience of not having to lug a 1280 page book around, but if you want continuity and consistency, buy the book and skip the Kindle edition.

Fantastic.

I bought this book for my girlfriend. She thoroughly enjoyed it, however she now expects me to give her a reasonable amount of time to get ready, and to wake her up only in the event I have fresh donuts ready for her to eat. That being said, this book is worth absolutely worth it. Jack Sjogren is a talented, witty, and dare I say, handsome man.

If you're looking to build your social media presence, this book is for you! Not only does it describe everything you could possibly want to know about guest blogging, it also includes info about helpful social media and marketing strategies such as building your mailing list, understanding SEO, and building credibility in your area of expertise. The author then provides a step-by-step primer for guest blogging, which is very useful and easy-to-understand.

I had some experience with guest blogging, and this book really enhanced my knowledge on the subject and inspired me to take my guest blogging to the next level. However, the author explains everything so clearly that this would be an awesome first resource for guest blogging newbies as well. Great read!

Must read marketing guide for new businesses

I've heard the term guest blogging before, but the barrier to entry seemed so high (in my mind) that I've never considered it. Until now. Mike Fishbein's book is a clearly laid out marketing plan for new businesses, and he walks through the concept of guest blogging step by step. This book covers the basics of SEO, lays out exactly what guest blogging is, how it can affect traffic to your own website, how it compares to traditional PR, how to find sites looking for guest bloggers, and what to write about. The book does a fantastic job taking the nebulous concept into something concrete and doable. I'm still a bit intimated by the idea, but so much less so than before I read the book. When you start your own business, you are responsible for everything, marketing included, and rich, meaningful how-to guides are an entrepreneur's best friend. This is such a guide. Fishbein also provides a ton of resources throughout the book, so whether you need to back track to get caught up, or want to move ahead, he's got a path for you to follow.

When Followers Won't Follow

Leadership for Dummies®, by Marshall Loeb, former managing editor of Fortune and Money magazines, and Stephen Kindel, former president of Pull Technologies, is equally comprehensive and helpful as the recently released 4th edition of the Nonprofit Kit For Dummies.

In describing three types of leadership styles (the chief strategist, the chief marketing officer, or the savior), the authors spotlight the New York Jets football coach, Bill Parcells, who inherited the team after a 1-15 loss/win record. His strategy: simplify the offense so cast-off quarterback Vinny Testaverde wouldn't throw so many interceptions. It worked and the Jets were in the playoffs after only two seasons under Parcells.

Buy this one and you'll get hooked--and you might even ignore social media for a day. The content is excellent:
* Ten Mistakes That Every Leader Makes ("Being a commander rather than a leader.")
* "Plan for every contingency--and remember that you can't plan for every contingency." (from the perforated card stock "Cheat Sheet" in the front of the book)

Wish I had read this in high school.

I'm new to this topic and wish I had read this yearsssss ago. I'm a supervisor for the first time in my life as a summer intern with a Federal agency. I read this before arriving at my current job and am very thankful I did so. No regrets.
