Global Capital and Peripheral Labour: The History and Political Economy of Plantation Workers in India (Routledge Contemporary South Asia)

This book presents a historical account of plantations in India in the context of the modern world economy. It brings history up to the present, thereby showing how history can assist in explaining contemporary conditions and trends. The author focuses on labour and economic development problems and uses the World Systems theory so as to demonstrate the practical utility of the theory and its limitations as a guide to historical research.

Based on extensive archival research, the book interprets the dynamics of plantation capitalism by focusing on the work, life and struggle of the dalits on plantations in colonial and post-colonial South India as they evolved from the mid-19th century. It argues that these elements of the plantation life-world were fashioned by the specific characteristics of the workers' location within the capitalist world-economy, the then prevailing local social structure and the scheme of disciplining to which the workers were subjected to. Treating the relations among various social forces – the planting communities, the oppressed communities (dalits in India), the regional and national state, and the Imperial regime, this book fills a gap in academic literature on capitalism, economic development, and globalization.

Playing For Keeps (A Neighbor From Hell Series Book 1), by R.L. Mathewson

Done with being the world's biggest pushover, Haley decides that things are going to start changing. The first thing that she was going to do was to put a stop to all the crap that her aggravating neighbor put her through. What she hadn't expected was to be sucked into his world, but Haley has a game plan and she won't let herself forget what the bad boy next door is capable of.

The last thing that Jason expected was for his shy little neighbor to go Rambo on him over some ruined flowers, but he quickly got over it once he realized exactly what he'd been missing. After he decides to take her under his wing, he can't help but notice how nicely she fits in his life. Now the only thing left to do was to convince her that this is anything but a game.

*Author's Note:
There is no rape in any way, shape or form in this book. That is one thing that readers will never have to worry about reading in any of my books. Haley does in fact save herself for the right man and since that man is a Bradford, I'm sure that many readers would agree that she made an excellent decision ;)

A neighbor from hell = A match made in heaven
By S. Richards
I read this with a smile on my face. The interaction between h/H is fun, lively and even endearing. The H is a jerk, but don't let that throw you off. I personally go for surly and rough heroes, and in Jason's case, he's more crude than total jerk. He's definitely rough and calls it how he sees it, doesn't mind peppering his language with curse words, and he doesn't suffer fools. But he also has a good, tender side and develops a real sweet spot for his next-door neighbor. Bad boy, meet good girl.

It all started five years ago when Jason moved in and Haley saw him taking a pee on the oak tree in his front yard. Yep, rough and crude, and this behavior scared Haley off, and she avoided him whenever possible. Haley's soft, sweet, sexy and maybe a little nerdy in her glasses, and she's also in need of a backbone adjustment. That's where Jason comes in. One day Haley has had it with being timid and taking crap from most everyone in her life, and Jason just pushes the wrong button that day. This leads to Haley confronting Jason about his behavior, and the rest is history.

From that moment on, Jason's hooked and decides to be her protector. He likes her sweetness, her looks and smarts, and he sees in her a chance to help make her stronger and more likely to stand up for herself. It's really cute and funny how he calls her 'little grasshopper.' He thinks he's Mr. Miyagi, the sensei who will teach his protege the art of toughness. Jason didn't know it yet, but he'd met his match. He doesn't realize that, in protecting Haley from loser guys, he's also saving her to have all to himself.

Brash, protective and possessive, and for all his faults, Jason's charming in his own way, and funny as well. There's so much chemistry between Haley and Jason. I even had to laugh out loud a few times at them. It's one of those stories where you feel as if you spent time with two good friends who have the hots for each other but don't know it yet, and you can't wait to see it when it finally happens. A cute, fun, sexy read, just really a good time.

More details:
Jason and Haley are neighbors and are both teaching at the same private school, but they almost never speak to one another.
Jason is the neighbor from hell. He throws loud parties, his yard is a mess, and even at work he keeps "borrowing" stuff without asking her.

Haley is timid and shy, so she never confronts him, but when she catches him ruining her beloved flowerbed, she snaps. She gets into a physical fight with him, and they accidentally disturb a nest of bees. They escape to her home and end up being stuck there for a few hours, in which they get to know each other a little better. Haley discovers Jason is a lot of fun, and not as bad as she thought. Jason discovers his stunning neighbor is a great buddy, and decides to help her come out of her shell.

This books is one of the most entertaining books I read. Jason is charming and immature, but in an adorable way. Haley's transformation to an assertive woman who even picks up fights in a bar is a lot of fun. The book is funny, sexy and romantic.

Hot, sexy read
By Jessica
I had no idea when I started reading Playing For Keeps that it would become one of my favorite reads for the summer. It was a very quick read.. I read it in just 5 hours but a cute and fun read. I was laughing out loud at some parts. My husband thought I was crazy but I don't care! So glad I picked up this book!

Playing for Keeps is about a 29 year-old woman, Haley; who is trying to make it on her own instead of living on her families money. She put herself through school, has a respectful job as a school teacher and purchased her modest home all by herself. For the past five years, Haley lived next door to a neighbor from hell, Jason. Jason is everything you don't want in a neighbor. He is rude, disrespectful, party animal that has endless amounts of women and parties in his house. Plus he doesn't keep up with his home that is an eye sore. Poor Haley not only has to live next to him but also work with him since Jason is also a teacher at the same school.

After a big fight between the two neighbors a friendship develops, then of course a relationship follows. Jason is soon in his first "real" relationship. He is always doubting himself that he is good enough for Haley and everyone around them seem to agree but the two want nothing else then to be together. But with all their troubles can they survive their family, their history, their future?

REVIEW: This book is so worth the 99 cents on Amazon. What a pleasant surprised I found and could not put the book down. I thought Haley was adorable and enjoyed reading a book with a character who values sex and has high morals. With that said, their love scenes were pretty steamy. I didn't think I could get so worked up over scenes that did not involve sex. Jason and his friends were adorable. I loved Jason's obsessed with food, Haley's cooking captured his heart :)

I thought the author captured each moment perfectly and was very well written. I have already purchased other books by R.L. Mathewson and can not wait to start reading them.

The only negative thing was the book was too short. I am greedy, I wanted more but the ending was so perfect. I am glad it ended the way it did.

In the Kingdom of Ice: The Grand and Terrible Polar Voyage of the USS Jeannette, by Hampton Sides

New York Times bestselling author Hampton Sides returns with a white-knuckle tale of polar exploration and survival in the Gilded Age

In the late nineteenth century, people were obsessed by one of the last unmapped areas of the globe: the North Pole. No one knew what existed beyond the fortress of ice rimming the northern oceans, although theories abounded. The foremost cartographer in the world, a German named August Petermann, believed that warm currents sustained a verdant island at the top of the world. National glory would fall to whoever could plant his flag upon its shores.

James Gordon Bennett, the eccentric and stupendously wealthy owner of The New York Herald, had recently captured the world's attention by dispatching Stanley to Africa to find Dr. Livingstone. Now he was keen to re-create that sensation on an even more epic scale. So he funded an official U.S. naval expedition to reach the Pole, choosing as its captain a young officer named George Washington De Long, who had gained fame for a rescue operation off the coast of Greenland. De Long led a team of 32 men deep into uncharted Arctic waters, carrying the aspirations of a young country burning to become a world power. On July 8, 1879, the USS Jeannette set sail from San Francisco to cheering crowds in the grip of "Arctic Fever."

The ship sailed into uncharted seas, but soon was trapped in pack ice. Two years into the harrowing voyage, the hull was breached. Amid the rush of water and the shrieks of breaking wooden boards, the crew abandoned the ship. Less than an hour later, the Jeannette sank to the bottom, and the men found themselves marooned a thousand miles north of Siberia with only the barest supplies. Thus began their long march across the endless ice—a frozen hell in the most lonesome corner of the world. Facing everything from snow blindness and polar bears to ferocious storms and frosty labyrinths, the expedition battled madness and starvation as they desperately strove for survival.

With twists and turns worthy of a thriller, In The Kingdom of Ice is a spellbinding tale of heroism and determination in the most unforgiving territory on Earth.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, August 2014: In the last few decades of the 19th century, the world looked very different from the way it does now. Parts of the map were unfilled--chief among those spaces was the North Pole, which many believed contained warm currents that might provide safe passage. Enter James Gordon Bennett, the wealthy and eccentric owner of the New York Herald. Bennett--who was responsible for sending Stanley in search of Livingstone--wanted to produce another thrill for his readers, so he funded a naval expedition to reach the pole. Captained by George Washington De Long, the U.S.S. Jeannette shipped out in 1879 toward glory and parts unknown. The Jeannette became encased in ice, but the adventure was only just beginning. Author Hampton Sides does a masterful job of setting up the voyage against the backdrop of the Gilded Age, developing fascinating characters along the way, and delivering a true triumph of narrative nonfiction. Drawing on journal entries, letters, and eventually his own visit to the region, Sides paints a vivid, moving, and breathless portrait of the crew of the Jeannette. How could a book about this much snow and ice be this good? --Chris Schluep

Review
"Enthralling… In the Kingdom of Ice is a brilliant explosion of narrative non-fiction: detailed, moving, harrowing, as gripping as any well-paced thriller but a lot more interesting because it is also true… Too often American heroism is presented at one-dimensional success against the odds… This is a much more subtle and rewarding book, an account of magnificent disaster, of courage devoted to attempting something that could not be done."
--The Times of London

“As our knowledge of the world increases, it must be difficult for audacious explorers to find terra incognita to match their passion. Surely the same frustration holds true for writers in that worthy genre, exploration literature: Haven’t all great stories been told? Never underestimate the ingenuity of a first-rate author. Hampton Sides’s In the Kingdom of Ice: The Grand and Terrible Polar Voyage of the USS Jeannette, which recounts the astonishing tribulations of a group of seafarers determined to be the first men to reach and reconnoiter the North Pole, is a splendid book in every way… It would be malicious to ruin the suspense about the fate of the Jeannette’s crew… The book is a marvelous nonfiction thriller.”
--The Wall Street Journal

"Compelling....Sides spins a propulsive narrative from obscure documents, journals and his own firsthand visits to the Arctic regions visited by the Jeannette and its crew. In the Kingdom of Ice makes for harrowing reading as it recounts the grim aspects of the explorers' battle for survival: illness, crippling frostbite, snow-blindness and the prospect of starvation. As grisly as the details are, you keep turning pages to find out how DeLong and his men pull themselves past each setback — even though there's always another one looming ahead."
--USA Today

“[Sides] brings vividness to In the Kingdom of Ice, and in the tragedy of the Jeannette he’s found a story that epitomizes both the heroism and the ghastly expense of life that characterized the entire Arctic enterprise…With an eye for the telling detail, he sketches the crew members as individuals…The bare facts of what happened to the Jeannette’s crew are easily Googleable, but if you don’t already know the story, In the Kingdom of Ice reads like a first-class epic thriller. De Long and his companions became explorers of not only unknown geographical territory but also extremes of suffering and despair. In his stoic endurance of disappointment and pain, De Long rivals Louis Zamperini, the hero of Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken…”
--Lev Grossman, Time Magazine

“First-rate polar history and adventure narrative...wonderfully evocative.... Sides vividly recounts the horrors [of the voyage]. In the Kingdom of Ice is a harrowing story, well told.
--The New York Times Book Review

“Unforgettable…a pulse-racing epic of endurance set against an exceedingly bizarre Arctic backdrop…[Sides’] descriptions of the physical challenges the men face and the eerie landscape that surrounds them are masterful. As De Long and his crew attempt to save themselves, the story grows in suspense and psychological complexity…More strange and fantastic turns follow, involving uncharted and uninhabited lands, and it pains me that I cannot describe them without spoiling the pleasure of those who have not yet read In the Kingdom of Ice. Sides’ book is a masterful work of history and storytelling.”
--The Los Angeles Times

“America’s own brush with epic polar tragedy, the subject of Hampton Sides’ phenomenally gripping new book, is a less well-known affair…What ensued — a struggle to survive and a nearly 1,000-mile trek across the Arctic Ocean and into the vastness of Siberia — stands as one of the most perilous journeys ever. Sides works story-telling magic as he evokes the pathos and suffering of what unfolded: De Long and his crew endured hardships that boggle the mind. But there is also beauty here… [Sides] writes superbly on the geography of Siberia and the Arctic, and the abundant bird and animal life the explorers encountered on their travels, which took them across ice, storm-tossed seas, treacherous tundra, rocky seacoasts, and volcanic islands.”
--The Boston Globe

“…harrowing and impeccably paced.”
 --The New Yorker

"A dazzling page-turner.....”
--Nathaniel Philbrick, New York Times bestselling author of In the Heart of the Sea, Bunker Hill and Sea of Glory

“[A] stunningly vivid account.....”
--Mark Bowden, New York Times Bestselling author of Black Hawk Down

  “An astonishingly good story....”
--Candice Millard, New York Times bestselling author of The Destiny of the Republic  and The River of Doubt

"Hampton Sides conjures the doomed USS Jeannette and her courageous crew with haunting power...."
--Caroline Alexander, New York Times bestselling author of The Endurance and The Bounty

"A spellbinding tale....”
--David Grann, New York Times bestselling author of The Lost City of Z

"Hampton Sides is one of America’s most expansive and engaging storytellers, and he proves it again with the incredible saga of the USS Jeannette...."

Ripping yarn, moving tale
By J. Hundley
You can read the synopsis up top, so I won't bore you with that. I will, however, recommend that you read this. If you are here, I will assume you have an interest in either the author's work or, more likely, the history of polar exploration. I have not previously read any of Side's other books, but with a fairly strong interest in the history of the exploration of the poles, I can heartily recommend this.

This is first-rate narrative history, well-written and paced to create a gripping account. "Novelistic" can be used as an insult to history writing, but I use it here as a compliment. This is a page-turner. Unfortunately, having read this in galleys, there is no index, nor are photos provided, but the end notes are thorough and this seems to be very well researched.

The letters written by Lt. DeLong's wife during the time he and the ship and crew were out of contact are hear-warming and -rending and provide an excellent counter-point and commentary on the main narrative, and the author's access to the surviving journals and letters of the other crew members allow him to paint full-bodied portraits of the men on the ice. You come very quickly to care about these men and their fates.

The story of the Jeannette is, like many explorations before and after it, one of extreme heroism, a good deal of heartbreak, and high adventure for those of us in armchairs. This is a fine addition to the literature.

Spellbinding Account of Disastrous Polar Expedition
By Reader from Washington, DC
I could not put this book down.

This is a detailed historical account of a tragic polar expedition that reads like a psychological thriller novel. Adding to the novelistic flavor are poignant quotes from the journals and letters of the expedition's men and stories about their loved ones waiting for their return.

When George Washington De Long, a young naval officer, left the San Francisco harbor on July 8, 1879, commanding the ship "Jeanette," he was already a national hero. Earnest and methodical, he was leading a handpicked, competent, disciplined crew, bound for the North Pole.

De Long and many other explorers and scientists in that era believed that the Arctic ice pack formed only an outer ring, and beyond it was an "Open Polar Sea." This "Open Polar Sea" was thought to be a large, warm water basin, that a ship might sail through right to the North Pole, possibly finding land and inhabitants at the North Pole. De Long's expedition was in search of a pathway through this ice to the "Open Polar Sea."

De Long did not know, as he set sail, that data from a U.S. Bering Sea survey disproving the "Open Polar Sea" theory would reach Washington, DC after he sailed.

Even after he began to suspect that the theory might be wrong, he continued pursuing his goal of reaching the North Pole and making additional discoveries in the Arctic. This was not a totally unreasonable idea -- the ship was heavily reinforced to resist the ice packs, and carried huge amounts of coal to keep the crew warm, plentiful food, dogs for hauling and an excellent navigator, an innovative engineer and a brilliant doctor.

But as the book shows, the Arctic is treacherous, and just a few pieces of bad luck and some missing or erroneous information can destroy the bravest, strongest and best-trained men.

The book also provides an overview of Gilded Age American and European society in this era, and how Victorian concepts of exploration, manhood, and science affected the expedition's planning and outcome.

Especially striking are the portraits -- almost mini-novellas -- of the two primary intellectual sponsors of the voyage and their impact on its goals and design -- the expedition's financially generous, but dangerously eccentric and unrealistic financial sponsor, James Gordon Bennett, Jr., the autocratic owner of the New York Herald Tribune, and Professor Augustus Petermann, a brilliant German cartographer, suffering from severe bipolar disorder (untreatable in his day) and an unwillingness to consider alternative polar geography theories.

A third sponsor -- the U.S. Navy -- truly did its best for the expedition, fitting out the ship in the California Mare Island naval shipyard with the expert advice of naval engineers. The book is a classic illustration of the fact that even careful planning by experts cannot foresee all possible outcomes and cannot save projects based on erroneous theories.

Hampton Sides is just an excellent story teller
By Bobby D.
Let me start by stating that Hampton Sides is clearly one of my favorite non-fiction authors. His previous books, HELLHOUND ON HIS TRAIL, BLOOD AND THUNDER, and GHOST SOLDIERS are among my all-time favorite recommended books. So when I learned his new book KINGDOM OF ICE was being released I had to pre-order it and dropped what I was reading to dig right in. My first thought as I began to read about the USS Jeannette and its ill-fated voyage of discovery in 1880 was that I had read about this incident before. And in a way I had but not the very same story or even about the same ship. Yet rather amazingly Jennifer Niven’s two books about the doomed 1913 polar voyage of the Karluk (THE ICE MASTER and ADA BLACKJACK) follow a similar story to Hampton Sides new book. Both stories are based on scientific voyages setting out via the Berring Strait to prove ridiculous theories about the North Pole in what were well prepared ships which got stuck and drifted in the ice before sinking. It appears that both these boats sank very near each other north of Wrangel island (the Karluk north east of the island and the Jeannetter north west). After their ships sunk both crews had to make heroic treks over ice and sea to the coast of Siberia. These three books make up a great trilogy of tragic Arctic scientific Exploration.
For those of you who have not read Jennifer Niven’s two earlier books I expect you will really enjoy the whole of Hampton Side’s most excellent telling of the USS Jeannette and its crew. Many of the newspaper reviews seem to indicate that the first part of the Side’s book is a bit slow to build up to the eventual survival story which occupies the second half of the book. But I found the opposite to be true as the first half is most interesting and has many interesting facts as to how the voyage was conceived and bios of its captain and crew as well as its financer James Bennett who was looking for a good story for his New York Herald newspaper. I just could not get over the fact that their seemed to be so many similarities between the two survival stories. As to the Jeannette voyage it appears they wanted to confirm what most scientific thought at the time. It was widely believed that the Polar sea north of the ice was warm and even perhaps a location of a lost civilization. No one seemed to care what Whaler’s thought who regularly sailed these waters. Wrangel Island (which plays a part in all the books discussed here) was thought to be attached to Greenland and a warm water current would take explorers through the ice to this warm water sea. It didn't take the crew of the Jeannette long to disprove then current thinking.
I probably will have to go back and re-read ICE MASTER because it seems hard to understand that after the results of the Jeannette voyage some 30 years later the Karluk would again attempt the same fool hardy voyage.

About the Author

C. Henry Edwards is emeritus professor of mathematics at the University of Georgia. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Tennessee in 1960, and recently retired after 40 years of classroom teaching (including calculus or differential equations almost every term) at the universities of Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Georgia, with a brief interlude at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton) as an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow. He has received numerous teaching awards, including the University of Georgia’s honoratus medal in 1983 (for sustained excellence in honors teaching), its Josiah Meigs award in 1991 (the institution’s highest award for teaching), and the 1997 statewide Georgia Regents award for research university faculty teaching excellence. His scholarly career has ranged from research and dissertation direction in topology to the history of mathematics to computing and technology in the teaching and applications of mathematics. In addition to being author or co-author of calculus, advanced calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations textbooks, he is well-known to calculus instructors as author of The Historical Development of the Calculus (Springer-Verlag, 1979). During the 1990s, he served as a principal investigator on three NSF-supported projects: (1) A school mathematics project including Maple for beginning algebra students, (2) A Calculus-with-Mathematica program, and (3) A MATLAB-based computer lab project for numerical analysis and differential equations students.

David E. Penney, University of Georgia, completed his Ph.D. at Tulane University in 1965 (under the direction of Prof. L. Bruce Treybig) while teaching at the University of New Orleans. Earlier he had worked in experimental biophysics at Tulane University and the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in New Orleans under the direction of Robert Dixon McAfee, where Dr. McAfee’s research team’s primary focus was on the active transport of sodium ions by biological membranes. Penney’s primary contribution here was the development of a mathematical model (using simultaneous ordinary differential equations) for the metabolic phenomena regulating such transport, with potential future applications in kidney physiology, management of hypertension, and treatment of congestive heart failure. He also designed and constructed servomechanisms for the accurate monitoring of ion transport, a phenomenon involving the measurement of potentials in microvolts at impedances of millions of megohms. Penney began teaching calculus at Tulane in 1957 and taught that course almost every term with enthusiasm and distinction until his retirement at the end of the last millennium. During his tenure at the University of Georgia, he received numerous University-wide teaching awards as well as directing several doctoral dissertations and seven undergraduate research projects. He is the author or co-author of textbooks on calculus, computer programming, differential equations, linear algebra, and liberal arts mathematics.

Contemporary calculus instructors and students face traditional challenges as well as new ones that result from changes in the role and practice of mathematics by scientists and engineers in the world at large. As a consequence, this sixth edition of our calculus textbook is its most extensive revision since the first edition appeared in 1982.

Two entire chapters of the fifth edition have disappeared from the table of contents and an entirely new chapter now appears there. Most of the remaining chapters have been extensively rewritten. About 125 of the book's over 750 worked examples are new for this edition and the 1825 figures in the text include 225 new computer-generated graphics. About 600 of its over 7000 problems are new, and these are augmented by 320 new conceptual discussion questions that now precede the problem sets. Moreover, 1050 new true/false questions are included in the Study Guides on the new CD-ROM that accompanies this edition. In summary, almost 2000 of these 8400-plus problems and questions are new, and the text discussion and explanations have undergone corresponding alteration and improvement.

PRINCIPAL NEW FEATURES

The current revision of the text features

  • Early transcendentals fully integrated in Semester I.
  • Differential equations and applications in Semester II.

Complete coverage of the calculus of transcendental functions is now fully integrated in Chapters 1 through 6—with the result that the Chapter 7 and 8 titles in the 5th edition table of contents do not appear in this 6th edition.

A new chapter on differential equations (Chapter 8) now appears immediately after Chapter 7 on techniques of integration. It includes both direction fields and Eider's method together with the more elementary symbolic methods (which exploit techniques from Chapter 7) and interesting applications of both first- and second-order equations. Chapter 10 (Infinite Series) now ends with a new section on power series solutions of differential equations, thus bringing full circle a unifying focus of second-semester calculus on elementary differential equations.

Excellent book!
By Thomas
I just finished self-studying Calculus using this book. During the last six months that it took me to finish, never did I find the need for a teacher.

This book covers the topics taught in the first three semesters of an undergraduate math-related course. There are 14 chapters in all: 1) Functions, Graphs, and Models 2) Prelude to Calculus 3) The Derivative 4) Additional Applications of the Derivative 5) The Integral 6) Applications of the Integral 7) Techniques of Integration 8) Differential Equations 9) Polar Coordinates and Parametric Curves 10) Infinite Series 11) Vectors, Curves, and Surfaces in Space 12) Partial Differentiation 13) Multiple Integrals 14) Vector Calculus.

Each chapter begins with a page of related historical details in order to engage the reader. This is followed by around 4-10 sections, each of which has an exercise with 30 problems (on an average) and 10 True/False questions. After reading the theory for a section, solve 10 problems from the exercise. [Make sure you use MATLAB (or any similar software) and a Graphing Calculator whenever a problem requires it. Wolfram Mathematica Online Integrator is another useful tool.] Then do the True/False questions and move on to the next section.

The problems are a lot of fun to do and some of them are quite challenging. So buy the Solutions Manual if you think you need it, but only after you finish the entire book (so that you don't peek!). Answers to odd-numbered problems and all True/False questions are given at the end. Also, there are appendices for those of you who need to brush up your algebra/trigonometry/basic concepts.

I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did!!

A Good Calculus Text
By Patrick J. OHara
The only draw back that I find with this book, and many of the well-known and used Calculus books like Larson's Calculus: AP Edition is that there isn't enough discussion of the concept of the Integral as an Accumulation Function. The AP Calculus tests now have placed considerable emphasis on these functions in the Free Response questions with initial conditions. Granted, the text here being reviewed is not an AP textbook, and compared to Larson's AP edition, Edward's has more of a discussion of the Integral as an Accumulation Function, though he doesn't describe the Integral in this way that I've seen. Yet there is just a smattering of questions at the end of the chapter that seem to me to not be at AP level as one would encounter on the exam. There should be a chapter or more devoted to this concept and use of the Integral and a generous supply of AP level test questions at the end, instead of a tiny section and a smattering of accumulation function exercises because this area and concept of the Integral is currently in vogue.

Even in some of the so-called "Applied Calculus" texts, there is no mention of these functions at all, except one I found Calculus Concepts: An Informal Approach to the Mathematics of Change (Textbooks Available with Cengage Youbook) which appears to have some sections and a whole chapter that discusses the Integral in this way in applications. This should be good practice for those preparing for the AP exams. I purchased it and hope it is what it appears to be: a book that discusses in depth the Integral as an Accumulation Function and fills the void that many Calculus books have in this area - even AP titles. If so, I will recommend it to students as a supplement.

You Must love keyboarding
By E. Elsberry
If your professor uses this with cengagebrain you need to buy Microsoft Word 13 for 1-55 or higher $$-$$$, the book $$$, and if you rent the book you still have to buy a product code for a mere $60. The three credt course ends up costing you about $600.00. The book is so not telling you that you that rental and permissions are for six months when the class is for four months, so they justify the cost of the rental because they only have a 6 month rental agreement. The book works hand in hand with one online site from what I have seen and makes it easy for the instructor to get your work. The online rental products do not come with a key code, but they do require you to have a key code for cengagebrain. Other online classes and book don't require such a set up or if they do the cost is 1/2 as much as what I had to pay to get this book in service. The book supports the class objectives so if you have to have this book compare the cost of owning it against renting it and the additional cost of upgrading your software to run the keyboarding progam setup.

Keyboarding and Work Processing Essentials
By Gabriela Morales
The book is a great shape. It does explaining a lot of basic keyboarding and tips unfortunately I wasn't informed by the teacher until after that I needed the CD with the access code to be able to use it for class. I was able to save some money by buying this book and the code separately but I wish I would have been informed before. The seller is great and fast.

Not as good as others had reviewed
By Andrew Fong
After reading the other reviews, I was expecting much more. This was a book that gives you ideas of designing your own program for preparing and makes solid suggestions, but not practical for most ofthoseinthisactual situation. The short section on sample questions was good, but did not provide as much information as another book which I found more helpful in its approach. To be clear this was not written by a medical person. The book by Jesicca Freedlman MD I found much mo practical and more pointed in its approach to this topic

Intensive Interview Preparation
By kmonkulus
This book is not for those who want to review common medical school interview topics or get a few quick tips. Rather, it is designed to be a guide for long-term intensive interview preparation, taking place over the course of months. The authors go very in-depth about the science and art of interviewing, explaining when to make small talk, when to get in depth, and what different kinds of questions are trying to get at. There is a helpful list of example questions to prepare for and some general advice, but if this is all that you are looking for you don't need this book. If you have several weeks/months to prepare for interviewing and are willing to put lots of time towards it, then give it a try!

up to date & full of important details
By Z. Lee
I agree with the first reviewer. I found this book to be especially helpful when it came to the more abstract scenarios in the interview panel. Overall, this book was full of good information and I'm really glad I stumbled upon it. Years ago, after scoring high on the MCATS and feeling pretty confident about the whole process of getting into medical school, I was quite disappointed when I wasn't able to get into any of my top picks. So much so that I abandoned the idea of a career in medicine altogether. Then about a year ago I decided to pursue my dream again and that was around the time I came across this book. It provided me with essential information which I'm certain helped me get through the process. I even got accepted into my #2 school, which is something I can't say happened to many of my peers.

Escaping Peril (Wings of Fire, Book 8), by Tui T. Sutherland

Peril has been loyal to Queen Scarlet, who used her fatal firescales to kill countless dragons in the SkyWing arena. Now, Peril is loyal to Clay, the only dragonet who has ever been her friend. So when Scarlet threatens Jade Mountain Academy, Peril sets off to find her former queen, stop her, and save the day, no matter what it takes.

There's just one problem: a strangely persistent SeaWing, Turtle, insists on coming along, too. Turtle is worried about his friends, who left to search for Scarlet and haven't returned. Peril is worried that she might accidentally burn Turtle -- or burn him on purpose, for being so annoying -- and frustrated that she keeps saying and doing the wrong things. She can't escape her firescales, and she can't escape her reputation as the deadliest dragon in Pyrrhia.

So when she's offered a chance to trade everything for a second chance, Peril has to decide who she's really loyal to . . . and whether her own scales might actually be worth saving.

Peril's Character Lit Up This Book!
By The Kid Book Reviewers
Thoughts: I am literally blown away by this book. Sutherland has really outdone herself - in fact, I feel like her books only continue to improve. That's not to say that I didn't have a few issues with this book - but those were very minimal and hardly took away from the story.
The plot was the only issue I had, actually. It felt like Sutherland wrote this whole book, and then decided that the ending wasn't memorable enough so she added in half of the next book to leave us on a cliffhanger (it worked). This, I found, was very frustrating, despite the added tension and excitement. Other than that, this book was amazing! I loved every one of the characters and how they've evolved over this series, although I would've liked to see some more of Winter, Kinkajou, and Qibli, some of my favorite characters. Peril's character was spot-on - the entire time, you could really feel her emotions. Although I originally wasn't too excited about the prospect of a book dedicated to Peril, I grew to love her character and was rooting for her by the end of the book. I loved the twist, too, and how it tied in with the brilliant prologue. The writing didn't stray far from its normal humor, suspense, and adventure - honestly, I think that the Wings of Fire series is the best series for middle grade readers. And although this book took a bit of a dark turn at the end, I'll be eagerly awaiting the next installment in this series.

DAT CLIFFHANGER THOUGH!
By Tairone Powell
I won't spoil anything from the book, but three moons was this book AMAZING! I had my doubts that if Peril was the main character, the entire book would be filled with her rejecting any other people who offered her sympathy, despite how much she acts like it. To all people who have not read this yet, be prepared for a wild ride!

This book was phenomenal!!! :D
By Kindle Customer
I loved the action, mystery and sophisticated storyline. Tui T. Sutherland did an awesome job and it was a great addition to the Wings of Fire series. Once I bought it, I couldn't stop reading! I can't wait for the next book in the series to come out because the cliff-hanger ending had me itching for more. Overall, I would highly recommend this book because I LOVED IT!!! :D
