Not only is this book a necessity for chefs-in-training, it's extremely beneficial to any other person who loves using fish in cooking, or even just someone who loves the ocean and wants to do their part in protecting it. Delivery was quick and the book arrived in excellent condition. Very much worth the investment!

Great resource but watch the sugar!

This book is a wonderful resource for transitioning the entire family to a Paleo lifestyle. It describes useful tools that I almost deem essential now and what they term "funny ingredients". My 5 year old loved the dinosaur story and she was instantly motivated to eat that way. My 7 year old was terrified by it but he has a strong food aversion disorder. The thought of eating what he thought was gross just made him cry. He did pick the Anytime Cookies recipe so we made that one first. They did not turn out like the picture at all. As a very visual child, he was furious and wouldn't try them. I found them tasty but they certainly weren't like the picture. I plan to try it again and then see how I can adapt it to make it less runny. My favorite recipe in here is the waffles and I think over time my kids will like those as well.

There are over 100 reviews here that will tell you the wonderful parts with this book so I don't feel the need to repeat them all. Since this is a review, I feel the need to be honest with some criticism.

There were two parts of this book that I did not like. First, they recommend transitioning your kids quickly. I don't necessarily agree with this approach for kids age 4+ who are going through a picky stage already. Our child became malnourished from his refusal to eat a few months ago and as much as everyone tells you that they will eat what you feed them, that is not always the case. Although my son is an extreme exception, I know there are other kids out there like him. My other two children are transitioning nicely. I feel it is better to empower the child to make the right choice. Read Cole's story in the book and talk about how processed food, grains and legumes make your child ill. Given the choice and knowing the consequence (tummy ache) of a bad choice often makes transitioning less of a battle. Now if you already have good eaters, you can probably transition over night without a problem but I just wanted to point out that it is not the best approach for everyone.

My second issue with this book is that this is a Paleo family and although the book is not exclusively a Paleo only book, I expected all the recipes to be Paleo. Sugar is not Paleo at all. I was shocked to see how many of these recipes had sugar, some even up to a cup. Sugar will make you crave more sugar and leads to a host of learning problems for children. There are many ways to sweeten treats without sugar. Even coconut palm sugar is a much better option than granulated sugar. Sugar no longer exists in our home and I would hope that this Paleo family will eventually make that step in their diet.

Criticism aside, this family is truly amazing in their transformation. They talk about more than just food in this book. Going Paleo is a lifestyle change, not just a diet change. I highly recommend adding this book to your library of Paleo books but avoid the recipes with sugar.

"Thought we were healthy"

My family and I ate the right things or so we thought. Whole grains, brown rice, meats, veggies, fruits, and Friday night pizza of course! Even our close friends would come for a visit and say we always had healthy snacks. But something wasn't right, we were all tired, hungry, and had low energy. My four year old son ate breakfast and within a half hour was telling me he was still hungry. How could this be? He just downed 6-8 mini pancakes and a cup of skim milk.

Then I stared reading/researching healthy eating for families. Kids I especially wanted to read about their nutrition and it was at this time I found Paleo and Eat Like A Dinosaur. We quickly cleaned out our pantry, fridge, and freezer of ALL processed foods. I explained to my four year old what we were doing and we went to the market and ordered our copy of ELaD.

Today we are 3-4 months into Paleo and we have never felt better. We reference this book daily and my four year old is excited to pick-out recipes to help create. The children's story in this book was helpful in explaining our new lifestyle and we've even read it to some of our friends children.

Without a doubt you will love this book and live better after practicing these techniques to healthy living with your family.

Too many sweets for my taste!

I bought this cookbook hoping it would be something I could look at with my preschooler to plan meals. Yes, he liked the dinosaur theme and all that, but I was shocked to find the book LOADED with sweet treats! We have no problem coming up with treats in our house, even without grains or refined sugars. My boy has a sweet tooth, and he just goes straight to the dessert page when we look at this together. I would have been SO excited to get a kid-oriented cookbook that DIDN'T offer so many sweet things. Alas, this is not that book.

Great book for those that don't know much about social media marketing. Even if you are informed this book will give you great refreshers and ideas that you probably would not have thought of before. I am using this book as a reference tool as well as a got to for things that I have forgotten. Easy read and packed with information.

A book which scratches the surface of how RuPaul saw himself, and his journey, as of 1995.

Overview

You Better Work! Well, for most of RuPaul’s life that is just what he did. Whether is was working on a signature look, how to perfect his hair, makeup, or tuck, or climbing the stairs to stardom, working is all he did. All the while battling a few addictions, failures, and being grossly misunderstood at times.

Main Storyline

RuPaul Charles, supermodel of the world, like many modern stars wasn’t born with bright lights showing off his best features and people dying to hear what he said. It began, as most consider their beginning, rather humble. He was the only boy of a group of girls, his parents were divorced, and he knew from a young age he wasn’t like everyone else. Now, whether he was trans or just gay that wasn’t clear until he realized how much he was a man who loved men in his teen years.

But, like most, life was a struggle. Yes, love was what he preached, especially self-love, but it was a complicated thing personally. RuPaul’s father wasn’t really there, his mom loved him, but was a bit mean about it, and while his sisters were always supportive, that is never enough. You need friends, someone who can be more than a friend, but people came and went, sometimes on good terms and other times not. Either way, RuPaul had to keep his angles right, the look fierce, and that upper lip strong.

After all, while the 20s were sacrificed to drugs, setbacks, and personal humiliations, those 30s were stardom. From the kid who put his own posters up in Atlanta to become known, and the one who used to go-go dance to make rent, to emceeing parties, putting out hit records, and even being nominated for televised awards. This is the story of a man with no fear of embracing his feminity in all aspects, besides just glamour, and who took their wit, their radiance, and ability to speak to the common man while dressed up as their own version of a supermodel, to heights that possibly we won’t see repeated anytime soon.

Highlights

From how RuPaul transforms into the supermodel to details about how he survived when he knew he was a star undiscovered, there are a lot of details and random facts provided within this book. But perhaps what makes this book so appealing is that it doesn’t pull punches yet doesn’t become downtrodden nor vulgar. RuPaul, recognizing the dark times, always tries to make light of a situation. All the while, not trying to present a condescending tone of “If I made it you can to” but more so that you have to find a way to make it, there is always a better tomorrow, and who knows how fabulous it could be.

On The Fence

Unfortunately, this book is out of print and while it is worth reading if it is $12 or $13, this isn’t a masterpiece worth paying more than that. For as much as RuPaul fills the book with pictures, random facts about his favorite movies, actresses, and how he survived his rise to fame, something about this book feels strange.

Strange in a good way since RuPaul’s tone isn’t speaking to you as a friend or stranger, but more so like a fairy godmother or weird uncle. However, at the same time, it also feels weirdly calculated. For those who are familiar with Beyoncé’s work, it is similar to what she puts out. Yes, the work is personal, but it is also made so you only really know what they are willing to let go. Meaning, you aren’t going to be let into anything which can’t be spun into something positive. Especially something which won’t make them look like either the victim or someone who did something justifiable. Heck, even the times when neither is an option, it is at least written to be funny so you easily forgive.

Making for RuPaul quickly going over his relationships being one of the few times you feel like you get to see behind the curtain. For despite noting alcoholism, homelessness, and depression, it isn’t until we hear about how RuPaul would chase those who didn’t love him and push away those who did, which makes him seem human. That is rather than this person who you fully recognized struggled, but is written like they had a Disney Princess like rise to a happy ending. One in which eventually they got out of their drab clothes and the cellar and got to walk amongst Hollywood royalty.

Even with that said, though, the book brings up many points about feminity and being your own person, and loving that person, which is what makes it worth finding. However, it is hard to shake that we are being told things on a need to know basis and even those details are watered down. Be it to protect the legacy, RuPaul not ready to reveal the pain and open the cut, or simply this book wasn’t about you feeling pity, sympathy, or anything like that. It was about saying that I found a way despite of and so can you. Maybe not the exact path I took, but one day, be it tomorrow, next week, next month, or even a few years, your dreams can come true. Yeah, you may need to modify that dream so it can come forth into reality, but while it may be difficult it is possible.

I love the option of renting text books

I love the option of renting text books. If the book is one I will use for a long time I can always go back and purchase it. After having so many text books get updated or be poorly written or not relevant to what I will use for years to come, renting text books is always my first choice. Until the end of the year, I will not know if it worth the purchase.

About the Author

Dr. Steven McCornack is anAssociate Professor of Communication at Michigan State University, where he also serves as the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Honors Advisor, and Faculty Advisor to the Undergraduate Communication Association. His research interests include deception, message production, and family communication. Dr. McCornack teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on interpersonal communication, relational communication, and language/discourse. Since he began at MSU in 1988, he has received several awards for undergraduate teaching excellence, including the Amoco Foundation Excellence in Teaching Award, a Lilly Endowment Teaching Fellowship, the MSU Teacher/Scholar Award, and the MSU Alumni Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award. Dr. McCornack was MSU's 1999 and 2010 nominee for the Carnegie Foundation United States Professor of the Year Award. Dr. McCornack received his B.A. from the University of Washington and his M.A. and PhD from the University of Illinois."

If it's required, it's required so you don't have much choice. If you have a choice, choose something else.

This book was required for a recent college communications course. It was an introductory course and this is an introductory book. Both were totally lame. This book goes too far in the direction of dumbing down material and being conversational -- probably in the hopes of connecting better with beginning college students. I found it to be annoying and inane. I also found it to be very ineffective in delivering the intended information. In an effort to be more conversational, the author interjects too many tangental comments and personal stories. Too much important information (if the professor uses the publisher's tests) is hidden in the otherwise fluffy text. I wouldn't recommend the book or a course based on the book but if you can't avoid either, be prepared to work hard to stay alert while being lulled into sleep by a boring textbook.

Very informative but not sure using multiple writers works

This was used as a textbook in my Japanese History class and, though there is a lot of great information in the book, it isn't as linear as an actual textbook. It is a book of essays written by different people so there was really no effort to make sure people and events were only talked about once like a normal history textbook. This redundancy means the reader has to skip and mentally delete a lot of repetitive information which can lead to a difficult and confusing read and hence a harder time retaining what you need to know for an exam.
