But with the world rapidly changing, many of our basic notions are becoming problematic. Both internationally and within countries, populations are constantly on the move, seeking better opportunities and living conditions, or an escape from violence and war. In spite of, or perhaps even because of these trends, ideas about home continue to shape the way people everywhere frame an understanding of their lives.

In this Very Short Introduction Michael Allen Fox considers the complex meaning of home and the essential importance of place to human psychology. Drawing on a wide array of international examples he discusses what dwelling is and the variety of dwellings. Fox also looks at the politics of the concept of 'home', homelessness, refugeeism and migration, and the future of home, and argues that home remains a central organizing concept in human life.

Finally! Finally! Widows/Orphans explained accurately.
By S. Moulton
Years I have spent, researching, going back to my college education, and none of my instructors could get this right. As a typography instructor I searched for the correct definition of widows, orphans, and line runts, and finally found this with "Elements of Typographic Style," by Robert Bringhurst. Bringhurst's book is known as the typographic bible, however this information is so misrepresented in many typography books by typography authorities. Nigel's book finally explains it correctly. It is very clear. I have been Crusader Rabbit about this information, and I fully support—and very much appreciate—Nigel being on the mark. Thank you so very much. I will recommend (and I do) your material to my students.

…freaked out slightly, that I missed the other two additions. Hmmm. I ditched books for awhile and wrote my own material.

I might also add, this book is very relevant material for anyone wanting to have intelligent, attractive, and usable/readable layouts using InDesign. As a content-focused designer, I can honestly say there is nothing in this book that isn't crucial to know as a professional. A lot of what I know about publication design I have learned from Nigel (lynda.com) and I fully support the information here.

I have to say this, also: When I grade and give feedback, I spend untold hours explaining and referring students to resources. I think, about 90% of what I need to refer my student to, are in this book. It would make a lot of sense to make this a required textbook for a typography class, and graphic design in general.

I will need to revisit this review when I get more into the content. Love this book! I could sit and read it like a novel. Thanks, Nigel.

I have not been paid to write this review. I really believe all this.

Better than the book I bought last year
By Vero
Better than the book I bought last year, this Indesign book explains clearly the rules of typography for whom wants to work with Indesign. However, you'll need to have a little bit of Indesign knowledge. At least you should know what a tools panel is, a layer, how to import a picture, a text, the masterpages, etc. etc. I really like the way the book is made, each chapter corresponding to a step up in the software learning.Sincerely it takes a litlle bit of time to read and apply the rules compared to a tutorial online, but it's worth it.

Way more than just another InDesign book
By Adam Pratt
I give this book five stars because:

1. Specific Focus

As a writer, editor, and reader of many graphic arts technology books I have to admit I'm weary of most of the monolithic, 1,000+ page volumes that try to cover everything under the sun. These books are important to the industry as they serve as important reference resources, but most folks don't sit down and actually read those books. On the other hand, lots of designers can spend a few afternoons reading a small and focused book like this.

2. Not Just About Software

This book is definitely about setting type with InDesign, but it's much more than a software book. I'd say this book is mostly about typography and the remainder is how to achieve that with software. It's a lot of why with a bit of how instead of a lot of how with a bit of why.

3. History and Craft

It's helpful for a designer to be historically versed in their craft, especially when it comes to typography. It's not a history book, but Nigel does a good job of explaining the context, purpose, techniques of good type. Good type is a true craft that is simultaneously readable, beautiful, and invisible.

"A Silent Voice" Volume 1...
By A. Irey
This review is of the first volume alone, so please keep in mind that is how I am judging the story at this point. It's not often a story can get an immediate reaction out of me. Within a single chapter I had an idea of what the story was going for and realized to my horror that the first volume was basically what would become one of the most difficult but fast reads I have done with any series. I blew through the first volume within an hour or so. It's engrossing but mainly because of how well one can relate to it. As an anime and manga fan I was not a cool kid in middle school or high school. It's unlikely that those interests would ever allow for a "popular" kid in that age. So, bullying isn't something I'm unused to. I have also been working with troubled youth and those with learning disabilities for the past 2 years so this story is a painful reminder of what kind of things adolescents will do to one another in their ignorance.

It's not difficult to relate to the story of someone being bullied but this story actually takes place from the perspective of someone who is the bully, a non-traditional setup. If you're anything like me, you may have a hard time getting through the story knowing that the main character you're following is the bully in this particular story. While that dichotomy changes a bit as the volume goes on this first volume isn't an easy story to swallow. But the fact that it is so important is what makes it truly shine. The characters are all real and it's not hard to see how many of these people exist in everyday life, even outside of the Japanese culture. The voices of shame of and guilt that resonant after the ignorance and bullying are given light are all too common and when enough becomes too much it really hits home to see how the dynamic of the story changes up.

The art for this particular series is beautiful. In fact, in a day and age where stories like this tend to focus on pretty yet great drawing, this particular series has a bit of grit to it which makes it that much more appealing given the tone of the series.

Since this is only the first volume it's hard to say where the story will go from here in terms of quality. As far as beginning volumes though, this one definitely has lasting impact even without the continued plot. I'll be very interested in reading what comes to follow.

Alright, let's be honest. I don't buy much manga, never. Hell, all I need to do is go online and read it. But this manga is so beautiful. It's a bout a girl who can't hear and the main character is a bully. He bullied her through out her childhood, to the point her family forced her to change school. But then the boy regrets it everyday because after she changed school, he realized how stupid he was. And the story goes on as the main mc keep looking for the girl everyday. You guys should read it because my summarize is f&*(king terrible.

10/10. It's so amazing that I WANTED TO BUY THE SET OF MANGA JUST TO SUPPORT THE ARTIST!

A Great Start
By HomeboyPlays
This manga is about a boy who bullies a deaf girl to the point of a school transfer and the events that transpire afterwards.
This volume, however, is entirely about everything leading up to the transfer.

That works wonderfully, as we get to see the full extent of his abuse and understand why he does it. The story doesn't skip any details for the sake of an "oooooooo" and I love that. The story also does a great job of showing the effects of bullying and what it looks like without it dragging on a lecture. It is instead displayed rather than described so that the reader understands why the girl transfers and can feel the emotion in the story. I can't say much without spoiling, but know that every character in this series plays a part in the development of the two protagonists. (Technically they're both protagonist, they're antagonist to each other though.)

Art: The art style is different from a lot of other manga I've read, and can sometimes not be that pleasing, but it's good overall.

Characters: I won't lie, so far the only characters worth giving a damn about are Shoya and Shota. This volume is essentially about building them up, so I understand it. Hopefully we get more insight on some of the other side characters, Shoyas mom for example.

Overall: This is a great start and I have already put the next 2 volumes in my cart! Completely recommend it!

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Debut author Bradford comes out swinging in this fast-paced adventure set in medieval Japan, the first in the projected Young Samurai trilogy. Twelve-year-old Jack Fletcher has gained a reputation aboard a British merchant vessel as an agile rigging monkey. But after Japanese ninja murder the entire crew, including his father, Jack is left alone and injured to cope with strange customs and indecipherable language. When he shows his fortitude and cleverness, however, a powerful samurai adopts him and sends him to learn the ways of Japan's warrior class. Jack's story alone makes for a page-turner, but coupling it with intriguing bits of Japanese history and culture, Bradford produces an adventure novel to rank among the genre's best. The intricate and authentic descriptions of martial arts contests will hold readers spellbound. Just as potent for many readers, though, are the outright hatred and prejudice Jack faces as a gaijin, or foreigner, while he attempts to master an elaborate code of honor. This book earns the literary equivalent of a black belt. Ages 10–up. (Mar.)

From Booklist
In 1611, a British merchant ship bound for “the Japans” is attacked by ninjas, and the lone survivor, 12-year-old Jack Fletcher, is taken into the home of a revered samurai. After dispensing with Jack’s initial sense of being lost in a new culture, the story dives directly into what teenaged boys will be looking for: fighting, and lots of it. The action comes fast, and Bradford writes with the authority of a black belt—which he happens to be—and a genuine respect for the subject. The minutiae of Jack’s samurai training are conveyed with clarity and plenty of bravura, and while the central conflicts in Jack’s path tend to be shallow and fairly telegraphed, the clashes they lead into are deeper and more satisfying. Employing a wide range of Japanese terms will have the dual effect of drawing readers intrigued by Japanese culture into the story, while dispelling the interest of those less enthusiastic. But it’s hard to fault an author for authenticity, and this first historical adventure in what promises to be a series shows definite promise. Grades 6-9. --Ian Chipman

Fabulous Story for Boys!
By FJB
I am a mom with young boys. I am also a book addict hoping to pass on my addiction to my children. However, because I'm rather protective, I pre-read almost all books my children read to make sure they are appropriate for my kids. I could not have been more thrilled with this series! While there is violence, it is not overly gory. The author writes in a very readable style which also instructs. The first book of the series begins to actually teach the reader a new language. You feel as if you are learning and struggling along with the protagonist.

In addition to the historical and cultural lessons, another aspect of the series I particularly enjoy is the emphasis on the good qualities of a warrior. The protagonist must struggle and practice to achieve the desired qualities. His experience teaches many transferable concepts for boys growing into adulthood such as dealing with prejudice, devastating loss and earning his place in the world. I can't wait for my boys to dive into these books so we can discuss them together!

Great Setting for Action Packed Story
By PDXbibliophile
Okay, so the Young Samurai is Harry Potter with an historical setting and a couple hundred fewer pages. YA readers won't care. The story is every adventure loving kid's fantasy. Set in Shogun era Japan of the late 1500's, Jack is a rigging monkey on his father's ship. When the ship is attacked by pirates, Jack ends up in the Sea of Japan, is rescued by a samurai and sent to an elite samurai training school. Of course, it turns out the pirate attack wasn't random, Jack has something the pirates are desperate to find, and the samurai training Jack has been receiving from Japan's greatest master swordsman comes in very handy. Like Harry Potter, Jack is an outsider who endures harassment and finds two friends, who help him adjust to this strange new culture, and vow to be his allies. Well, actually one friend and ally, the other can't decide if he wants to be Jack's friend or enemy. The historical details are rich, fascinating and extremely accurate. In a surprise twist - the evil antagonists are ninjas. All readers will be swept up in the adventure and history of the Young Samurai, even the most reluctant readers.

Incredibly captivating!
By David Young
I read this whole book in one sitting. I just couldn't put it down! This book as well as the entire series follows historical events and places fairly accurately making research into the people and places in the book twice as interesting. I started these books 2 weeks ago and I'm on book 6 now! I can't say enough about the series, characters, places and the author who must have spent countless hours weaving this story and his characters into the history and the spirit of feudal Japan. I'm a 25 year old guy and in love with this series. It can captivate young and old audiences alike. Arigatou gozaimashita Chris Bradford!

The American 1930s: A Literary History, by Peter Conn

Beginning with the stock market crash of 1929 and ending with America's entry into the Second World War, the long Depression decade was a period of immense social, economic and political turmoil. In response, writers as various as John Dos Passos, William Faulkner, Eugene O'Neill, Langston Hughes, Pearl S. Buck and others looked to the past to make sense of the present. In this important new study of the 1930s, the distinguished cultural historian Peter Conn traces the extensive and complex engagement with the past that characterized the imaginative writing of the decade. Moving expertly between historical events and literature, Conn includes discussions of historical novels, plays and poems, biographies and autobiographies, as well as factual and imaginary works of history. Mapping the decade's extraordinary intellectual range with authority and flair, The American 1930s is a widely anticipated contribution to American literary studies.

From The New Yorker
In this literary history, Conn offers a corrective to the assumption that the Depression decade was dominated culturally by leftist aesthetics and politics. Organized as a series of case studies, the book reveals fascinating vicissitudes of art and history. In a section on frontier fiction, a genre with a long lineage, Conn notes that it developed edges in the thirties, its self-reliant heroes newly resonant with a nation of diminished men. Though the thirties best-sellers reflected the racism that continued to deform society (Gone with the Wind appeared in 1936), it was also the decade when the pseudo-scientific bases on which racism was grounded were decisively confounded, as students of Franz Boas, including Zora Neale Hurston and Ruth Benedict, rose to prominence. Taken together, the studies powerfully demonstrate that, despite the strain of the Depression, the United States in the thirties was a place of enormous ideological and imaginative complexity.

The thesis of the book is interesting: that the debates in the 30s often involved shaping narratives about the past. Another strength is the recognition that not everyone was a lefty--the period was more politically diverse than is commonly understood. The analysis of texts is pretty minimal, however. This is a survey with a lot of plot summary.

Everything Old is New Again
By Aceto
T.S. Eliot wrote about keeping continuity with the tradition. His poems illuminated the stark consequences of our breaking with our ancient well springs: dryness, dust and despair. The American dust bowl made this literary device literally true.

The American writers of the previous depression knew this lesson. Their pens were divining rods searching for our national well source. How timely for Dr. Conn to bring us back to this generation, following that lost generation of WWI. I had always thought of them as the avant garde, iconoclastic bringers of a new epoch. What had I missed?

Dr. Conn starts with five pages of "a cultural and political timeline". No big deal, but handy, as it gives an international frame of reference. He sets out a history of this period as an introductory backdrop. He presents a particularly stinging continuity of American behavior from that depression to this, i.e., the victims blame themselves. Sure, there is talk of the causes of that economic failure, but finally, each citizen blames only himself. One young woman says "I am just no good." These disconnects are puzzling and daunting. Evidently, we considered our depression of the 30s more akin to the dust bowl or some other sort of natural disaster. Americans are loathe to blame authority for stupidity, greed or arrogance, so we take the burden on our own backs instead.

Dr. Conn sees the resolution for holding these contradictions as looking to the past for what he terms "a usable past". Rather than Ford's "History is bunk.", Americans saw history as salve and touchstone. To relegate the 30s as "the red decade" is to loose the tremendous grit and resolve of Americans in hardship. It is to lose the complexity and the very truths of those mean years.

I like Dr. Conn's treatment of the 20s, because both the Great War and the 20's are profoundly different and so helpful before he begins his central discussion. Whether or not you buy into his argument, you will appreciate his scholarship and enjoy his study.

But you must at least consider his argument that the 1930s found American writers looking to the past to deal with the terrible present. I thought I had a fair grasp of the writing of this period until I waded into his listing of prize winners and best sellers, not only in fiction, but in all categories. I have read a mere thirty-eight of them. He says it best: "A number of texts discussed in this book, apart from their own contribution to American diversity, are worth recovering and reading on their own terms. ... History should take some account of books that were actually read."

Even if his premise leaves you unconvinced, his book is a fine reference work at the very least. More likely, you will enjoy his central chapters enough to read more of these works. I have a load of new reading to do for sure, but he is also sending me back for another reading of 'Our Town" because of his savory discussion. Scholarly as it is, this book is never plodding or ponderous. Rather, Dr. Conn breathes fresh breath into our world nearly eighty years past.

Survey of Depression-Era Literature as It Looked to America's Past.
By mirasreviews
"The American 1930s" looks at Depression-era literature as it drew upon America's past to cope with and comment on the state of economic and political emergency that the nation suffered during the "long decade of the thirties" between the stock market crash in 1929 and the United States' entry into World War II in 1942. Peter Conn points out that literature of that period, like American experiences of the Depression, was extraordinarily diverse. Many Americans sunk into destitution, while many others saw their standards of living improve. The unifying theme is that literature of the 1930s tended to look to the past for explanations, inspiration, or panaceas. Conn discusses both fiction and non-fiction, as well as some plays, paintings, and the occasional film, when it fits the theme.

The book's seven chapters divide Depression-era literature into topics: books that lament the depravity of World War I or the freewheeling 1920s, those that document the socio-economic crisis of the 1930s and seek its causes in the past, historical fiction, biography and autobiography, the Southern Renaissance that both mythologized and condemned the region's past as racial tensions increased, Black American literature, and leftist writers who tried to place the past in service of a proletarian revolution. It's not clear to me if the literature of the 1930s talked about the past any more than the books of any other decade, as I have limited means to compare them. But there were an unusual number of biographies published in that decade, and, when a culture is in crisis, people do tend to look backward for an explanation or, alternatively, for encouragement.

Some literature of the 1930s doesn't fit into those categories. Hard-boiled crime literature, which had been around since the 1920s but fed on the urban violence of the 1930s, is conspicuously absent. Hammett, Chandler, Cain, and Woolrich were influential and popular writers, and their entire genre is absent from this study. Conn is limiting himself to literature that drew on American's history for its themes, which is fine -just don't take this book as a comprehensive study of 1930s American literature. Long-forgotten novels and non-fiction are discussed side by side with "classics" and books by still-renowned authors, so "The American 1930s" is a great source for a pre-war reading list. The author lists Pulitzer Prize winners and bestsellers 1930-1940 in the Appendix too.

DRILLING DATA HANDBOOK 8TH (IFP Publications), by Gilles Gabolde, Jean-Paul Nguyen

The seventh edition of the Drilling Data Handbook was published in 1999. We are in a new millennium and the communication techniques have considerably evolved. The electronic hardware and software allow fast communication anywhere in the world, access to huge databases, as well as permanent refreshing of the documents required by the drilling personnel. At the moment of making a decision about a new edition of the Drilling Data Handbook, the question was: is it pertinent to do an electronic version on a CD support, a web-accessible one with a connection to different sites, or to keep the popular concept of the paper green book as people have been using it for decades? The Internet gives access to an infinite volume of information but everybody has experimented the trouble of being lost in the way, or the difficulty to reach specific technical information. The Drilling Data Handbook does not want to compete with the web sites of the manufacturers, or other sources of electronic documentation. The main goal of our contribution to the drilling industry is to give access very quickly and without any additional resources to the fundamental data at the office, or at the rig floor. That is the reason why we made the decision to present you this reviewed and updated Eighth Edition in the formula you are familiar with, and we hope that it will continue to help you when planning and driling your well.
