Practices of Looking: An Introduction to Visual Culture, by Marita Sturken, Lisa Cartwright

Visual culture is central to how we communicate. Our lives are dominated by images and by visual technologies that allow for the local and global circulation of ideas, information, and politics. In this increasingly visual world, how can we best decipher and understand the many ways that our everyday lives are organized around looking practices and the many images we encounter each day? Now in a new edition, Practices of Looking: An Introduction to Visual Culture provides a comprehensive and engaging overview of how we understand a wide array of visual media and how we use images to express ourselves, to communicate, to play, and to learn. Marita Sturken and Lisa Cartwright--two leading scholars in the emergent and dynamic field of visual culture and communication--examine the diverse range of approaches to visual analysis and lead students through key theories and concepts.

Using clear, accessible language, vivid examples, and more than 250 full-color illustrations, the authors both explain and apply theory as they discuss how we see paintings, prints, photographs, film, television, video, advertisements, the news, the Internet, digital media, and visualization techniques in medicine and science. This truly interdisciplinary text bridges art history, film, media, and cultural studies to investigate how images carry meaning within and between different cultural arenas in everyday life, from art and commerce to science and the law. Sturken and Cartwright analyze images in relation to a wide spectrum of cultural and representational issues (desire, power, the gaze, bodies, sexuality, and ethnicity) and methodologies (semiotics, Marxism, psychoanalysis, feminism, and postcolonial theory).

Thoroughly updated to incorporate cutting-edge theoretical research, the second edition examines the following new topics: the surge of new media technologies; the impact of globalization on the flow of information and media form and content; and how nationalism and security concerns have changed our looking practices in the aftermath of 9/11. Challenging yet accessible, Practices of Looking is ideal for courses across a range of disciplines, including media and film studies, communications, art history, and photography.

Beautifully designed and now in a larger format and in full color throughout, Practices of Looking is an invaluable guide to understanding the complexities, contradictions, and pleasures of the visual world.

Review
This is that rarest of textbooks clear enough for undergraduates and challenging enough to use with graduate students. Simply the best introduction we have to the most important issues in thinking about the visual from an interdisciplinary perspective. This textbook is a comprehensive survey of theoretical, historical, social, and legal issues in visual culture. Well written and well argued, this textbook is suited for an introductory or a more advanced undergraduate course in visual culture or communication... I've used Practices of Looking before and my students loved it. Marina Levina, University of California, Berkeley Practices of Looking makes the subject matter and critical apparatus of visual culture studies accessible and clear. As a text, it communicates the complex ideas that animate the field without falling into jargon and murky writing. This is a book that respects the intelligence of its audience, which ranges from undergraduates just discovering visual culture to graduate students refining their own approaches to the visual universe. Bernard Herman, University of Delaware

Great (but overpriced) introduction
By Alan Diaz
This is by far the best introductory text on visual culture I have personally come across. I strongly disagree with some previous reviewers that say the writing is "pompous" or "needlessly complex"; I am by no means an expert on the subject and I found the writing to be extremely comprehensive and even generous when it comes to explanations. The authors seem to make a great effort to be understood and a lot of really complex concepts are presented in a surprisingly and refreshing clear manner. I also disagree with a previous review that claimed that technical terms are frequently unexplained (I, in fact, think quite the opposite). Maybe the complaints about it being "unnecessarily long" could be somewhat justified if you consider that illustrating the concepts through concrete examples is "unnecessary". I think that the examples (although I admit I sometimes skimmed through them) present the rich context of visual culture and even make the text quite pleasant and colorful. That, in my opinion, is really something to be thankful for when it comes to "academic" texts.

That said, I have some complaints about the quality-price ratio of the actual materiality of the book itself. I initially borrowed the first edition from my university library (where they gave it a hardcover treatment for durability) and read it almost completely through. As I already said, I thought it was great (and wanted to read the new sections added on the second edition) so I decided to buy it regardless of the surprisingly high $80 price tag. I was quite disappointed when it arrived. The paper is not too great, the typography is not the best for reading and the cover is made from a flimsy and thin "plastified" paper (I also think the design of the cover itself is awful -5 minute random cut and paste-, but you can see that from the product photo and I guess its irrelevant). Besides this, I find the format too big (it is exactly A4!). Thus, the book ends up being one of those "squiggly" books that feel like a wet fish when you have it in your hands. I admit this is not so serious, but for $80 bucks I was expecting something better made...

In conclusion: content-wise the book is top notch; materially-wise it leaves a lot to be desired. It is extremely useful and it is no doubt a work of great scholarship. However, its not one of those books you enjoy having in your hands or in your bookshelf (and it will undoubtedly hurt your wallet).

Best of its kind...with one exception
By Dr.L.
When I was looking for a textbook for my visual sociology class I went through several highly academic and rather deadly boring books. Then I came across this one. While it is not exactly what I wanted, it does cover about 90% of the needs for this class. Chapters are set in a logical order and take into account political, commercial as well as sociological and cultural aspects of "looking at" photos, sculptures, paintings, TV and films. All of this is combined with an historical frame. The terminology is well defined and placed into context with understandable examples. The photos and paintings, propaganda material and TV adds are valuable and relevant to the what is covered in the text. It is a readable text but there is one drawback....the authors beat the proverbial dead house when it comes to discussion. Like many academics, including some of my own colleagues, they like to hear themselves talk and, in this case, being read. I am more the..make your point and move on type. So while the book could probably be better edited, it is nonetheless a most valuable source in the practice of looking.

too much pontless info
By JJ
The book has a few really interesting points, but those ponts take up about 1 page in 15. Surrounding each interesting or helpful tidbit is much more arbitrary information that makes you wish the book would just get to the point already. The book could have been edited down to at least half its size and would have been more effective. Unfortunately i need this for a class and have to just deal with the poor setup. I would not reccomend buying or using this text.

Easy, Enjoyable and Beautiful - Perfect for the Hopeless Romantic
By Todd Buster Paris
Conceptually, I LOVE the idea of this book. Pre-ordering it I had those butterflies in my stomach and couldn't wait to get it. It did NOT disappoint.

For tattoo fans, this book has some nice pictures and more importantly, very interesting stories about tattoos inspired by literature. For you fans of literary works, this will absolutely be thrilling, entertaining and fun to see ... well ... to see the words made flesh.

This is a great book for the hopeless romantic, the tattoo enthusiast, and/or for the literary buff - as well as anyone who enjoys asking the question, or giving the answer to: "nice tattoo, what's it mean to you? why'd you get it?"

If you're on the fence and wondering if you should buy it, let me point 3 things:
(1) For the price, it's an absolute no brainer. Buy it
(2) No matter what the price, it's a no brainer. Buy it.
(3) The reason that you're even considering buying this book is why you should buy this book.

Not enough tattoos
By Deborah Merritt
The literary world is vast. People with tattoos are extremely numerous. I was hoping this book would be a plethora of examples of how these two worlds collide. I was disappointed that it was so short and there weren't that many tattoo examples. I bought this as a Kindle book, which was fine for viewing the pictures. I suggest going to a book store and taking 5-10 minutes to go through the whole book and be done with it.

Beautiful cover, Wonderful concept
By Unole
I loved the idea of this book and the cover really sold me on purchasing this as a gift for a friend's birthday. While I have not read the book in it's entirety, I did flip through each page to see the tattoos. Each page layout is very unique but the quality of tattoos featured didn't really strike me as worthy of print. The visual artistry didn't exactly live up to the ideals behind the tattoo concepts to me but "Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder" I guess.

Created especially for nurses, the Clinical Decision Making series helps to bridge the gap between content knowledge and clinical application. Case Studies in Maternity & Women's Health is the first installment in this innovative series, which provides over forty maternity and women's health case histories, questions, and responses based on real life client situations. Every case contains an introductory "blueprint" of variables that must be considered while evaluating a particular scenario, which are pertinent concerning the client, nursing protocol, and setting of care. Examples of these variables include age, gender, or culture of the client, the client with a pre-existing condition, legal issues, or communication skills. Each blueprint and case is different, just as each clinical situation is unique to others. By allowing learners to simulate the actual decision-making process, they can gain a comfort level to make informed clinical judgments that will help them become successful nurses. Quite simply, Clinical Decision Making shortens the distance between the classroom and nursing practice like no other educational tool.

This exciting new resource contains selected care plans for pediatric, maternal, and psychiatric nursing in addition to medical-surgical nursing care plans ― 101 care plans in all. This allows students to use one book throughout the curriculum. Care plans are organized in four separate sections (medical-surgical, pediatric, maternal, and psychiatric) and within each section alphabetically by disorder/condition. The open and attractive two-color design, the latest NANDA nursing diagnoses, and desired outcomes featuring specific timeframes, make this the most student-friendly and clinically relevant nursing care plan book.

  • The unique "four books in one" approach includes pediatric, maternal, and psychiatric nursing care plans in addition to medical-surgical care plans.
  • Written by clinical experts in each subject area to ensure the most current, accurate, and clinically-relevant content available.
  • Each care plan employs a consistent format of: Overview, Health Care Setting, Assessment, Diagnostic Tests, Nursing Diagnoses, and Patient-Family Teaching and Discharge Planning.
  • Detailed rationales for each nursing intervention help students to apply concepts to clinical practice.
  • An open and attractive two-color design facilitates quick and easy retrieval of information.

Great resource for writing care plans!
By Panda
I'm in nursing school and our instructors had recommended a different book for writing our care plans. After a semester of trying to use the book they recommended, I noticed one of my friends using this book. I purchased it for this semester and couldn't be happier. It is an older edition but it is a great resource and exactly what I was looking for. Plus the price....come on!!

Highly Recommended!
By Kat
My instructor suggested I get All-in-One because it will serve me through my rotations (Med-Surg, Peds, OB and Psych.) I love this book! It is so much better than the one we were required to buy. It is the only care plan book I've seen that gives measurable outcomes, which are so helpful in practice, not just in writing the plans. The rationales are detailed and easy to understand, and I quickly find what I am looking for. Highly recommended!

extremely helpful book
By FruitFly
I was given this book by a friend while having trouble with my husband. Neither of us has really had much of an example of a healthy marriage - we're sort of making it up as we go.

I expected this to be a surface-level "christian book," with little practical advice and a lot of good-sounding fluff. Not even close!

In this book, Walter Trobisch narrates the conversations he has and lectures/sermons he gives over the course of a week in Africa. The many different troubles couples experience in the book cover many of the possible problems seen in a typical marriage. The explanations he gives of how God designs marriage - what it means to leave, cleave and become one flesh - really make it clear what my role is as a spouse.

Until reading this book, I had no clear understanding of what it looks like to be a wife (or husband). What is my goal? What balance do we take in terms of being ourselves / being a couple? What do we do when it seems impossible? Why should I put in the effort to resolve conflict?

Now I know. I now feel confident that I am able to continually become a better wife for my husband, that when I have no strength I know what I want God to help me with, and that it is possible for a broken person like me to be a good wife for my lover.

Especially in a world where many marriages fail, where people give up too quickly, where we receive very little support from our families and friends, and where we have few examples of healthy marriage, this book is necessary.

A requirement for engaged couples everywhere. A necessary example for married couples everywhere. This book is so universal and honest, I cannot fault it in any way.

Worth its weight in Gold!
By Apolloman
I purchased this first on a whim a few years before I got married as a casual read and liked its message. I found myself using its key / central message within my marriage and its stood me in good stead, we celebrated our 30th Wedding Anniversary this year. So I've bought a copy to give to each of my children. The book's key point is a very simple but one I've used to base decisions upon, so in my mind its worth its weight in gold. Highly recommend it.

Timeless insight on Marriage
By D. Olson
This book was written by a European Pastor who gave a series of lectures in an African city more than 30 years ago and yet it is relevant and helpful to us in America and around the world. He explains clearly the Biblical view and purpose of marriage, and at the same time we get to know three African couples who are trying to understand and apply these principles. I have used this book as a resource in talking to youth and pre marital counseling. I have loaned out this book to many friends and always had a positive response.

Developing Lean Leaders at all Levels: A Practical Guide, by Jeffrey Liker

2016 winner of the SHINGO RESEARCH AND PROFESSIONAL PUBLICATION AWARD, Developing Lean Leaders at all Levels: A Practical Guide is a management Must Read. The Lean Leadership Development Model (LLDM) presented in this book is intuitive and aligns well with accepted principles of operational excellence. It expands significantly on the elements of Lean, structuring them in a more specific way that can be operationalized by lean practitioners. You can learn everything you want about the Toyota Way; you can implement the tools they have created, but if you do not have the behaviors established within your culture, it will not be successful for long-term sustainment of operational excellence. Leadership must walk the talk of true north in every aspect of the Lean Leadership Development Model (LLDM) as conveyed in detail by Dr. Liker in this recent Shingo Award Winning Book. In Developing Lean Leaders at all Levels, we build on the theory in the original book, The Toyota Way to Lean Leadership, and answer the questions: How can I apply this in my organization? What concrete actions can I take to begin the journey of becoming a lean leader? How can I spread this learning to all parts of the organization? What critical tools are needed to turn the theory to practice? This book adds examples from over twenty years of experience by Dr. Liker in working with companies outside of Toyota. The book treats you as a student who will be actively engaged in developing lean leader skills as you read. It acts as a tutorial for beginning the journey.

Professor Jeff is a superstar! Definitely this is another good work and an awesome source for Lean Leaders!
By Amazon Customer
This book is a great source for lean leaders. It guides you step by step through problems solving & leadership development.

I found most useful chapters are 2, 4, 5, and 7.

Chapter 2 provide a step by step and in details how to solve problems and follow the Toyota Business Practice for problems solving. Jeff also explained greatly the A3 approach and the Kata method.

Chapter 3 is about visualization and work standard. How to implement, and the culture.

Chapter 4 will guide you step by step in how to develop your self to grow as a leader. This include the learning cycles, the Toyota approach of developing leaders at the gmeba, the Toyota method of hiring people, motivating people and respecting people.

Chapter 5 is very great! It guides you on how to become a teacher and start coaching others. This chapter will teach you the psychology of being a mentor, teacher and coach. The chapter also present the coaching kata by Mike Rother and simplify the technique in an easy manner.

Chapter 6 is about supporting the daily kaizen.

The three chapters 4,5,6 are replicated from the Toyota Way to Lean Leadership with some nice adds and insights.

Chapter 7 is about the remarkable approach Hoshin Kanri. This chapter will teach you how to align goals vertically and horizontally across different functional departments in your organization. The chapter also discuss Dana turnaround (discussed at the end of the Toyota Way to Lean Leadership).

The book still not a conclusion of the Toyota series books by Jeff. I still recommend to read the Toyota suite (7 books). And this book describes the practical side of the lean tools and dig deep into the lean culture.

Very good Jeff. Nicely done!

A Must Read for anyone trying to implement or that is currently on a continuous improvement journey
By CWP
Grammar aside, This is a ground breaking book and takes Dr. Liker's Toyota Way to the next level and shows the integration with other world class books like Toyota Kata by Mike Mother and Good to Great by Jim Collins. The most difficult part of reading this book is trying to put it into the proper context. It talks about Toyota's culture in layman's terms but it is impossible to really understand this culture if you haven't lived it. Some will read this book and think, there is nothing new here but if you have some history and familiarity with this culture you will see it really helps the reader take it to a new level of understanding. You almost need to read this book two or three times to really "get it" or follow it up with the on-line learning series based on this book. It is really an excellent book and provides new insight into this complex yet highly profitable culture. Finally there is a book on developing Leaders which is the biggest reason most companies fail trying to make Lean and any type of continuous improvement systems to sustain.

Full Wolf Moon: A Novel (Jeremy Logan Series), by Lincoln Child

The New York Times bestselling author of The Forgotten Room and Deep Storm is back with a new thriller that follows the trail of a killer who cannot exist . . . featuring Jeremy Logan, the renowned investigator of the supernatural and fantastic.

Legends, no matter how outlandish, are often grounded in reality. This has been the guiding principle behind the exhilarating career of Jeremy Logan, the "enigmalogist"—an investigator who specializes in analyzing phenomena that have no obvious explanation—previously seen in The Forgotten Room, The Third Gate, and Deep Storm. Logan has often found himself in situations where keeping an open mind could mean the difference between life and death, and that has never been more true than now.
Logan travels to an isolated writers' retreat deep in the Adirondacks to finally work on his book when the remote community is rocked by the grisly discovery of a dead hiker on Desolation Mountain. The body has been severely mauled, but the unusual savagery of the bite and claw marks call into question the initial suspicions of a wild bear attack. When Logan is asked to help investigate, he discovers no shortage of suspects capable of such an attack—and no shortage of locals willing to point the finger and spread incredible rumors. One rumor, too impossible to believe, has even the forest ranger believing in werewolves. As Logan gets to know the remote deep-woods landscape, including a respected woman scientist still struggling with the violent loss of her father in these very woods, Logan realizes he's up against something he has never seen before.
His most action-packed and white-knuckled novel to date, Full Wolf Moon is the perfect combination of exotic locales, provocative science, and raw action that make for a deeply entertaining Lincoln Child blockbuster.

At seven thirty in the evening Palmer stopped for another snack—handmade gorp and an energy bar from the lid pocket of his backpack. He’d sworn hours before that he wouldn’t allow himself a real dinner—hot and steaming from his titanium griddle—until he’d found a decent place to tent for the night.

He looked around slowly as he chewed the energy bar. He’d known it would be a rough slog, and he had believed himself familiar with the surrounding region, but nothing had prepared him for the hike in that day. Guess all the stories were true, he thought a little sourly.

It was the second weekend in July, the sun was just starting to slip behind the horizon to the west, but he could nevertheless make out Desolation Mountain, maybe four miles to the north. It stood there, alone, a mirror of blue-black lake at its base, its green flanks exposed as if taunting him. Four miles—but with this country, it might as well be forty.

“Shit,” he muttered, shoving the wrapper of the energy bar into his pocket and starting off once again.

Desolation Mountain was a trailless peak of 3,250 feet, making it not high enough to be among the “true” forty-six Adirondack tall peaks. Even so, its vertical rise and distance from other summits made it worth notching his belt with. But what made the mountain most attractive to hard-core backpackers, mountain hikers, and students of the Adirondacks was its remoteness. It was situated in the Desolation Lake area, west of the Five Ponds Wilderness—perhaps the wildest, most remote section of the entire six-million-acre park.

Remoteness didn’t bother David Palmer. He liked nothing better than to disappear into the wilderness and go for days without seeing another human being. It was actually getting to the mountain that was proving a real bitch.

At first, it hadn’t been bad at all. He’d left his SUV hidden among the trees at the Baldwin Mountain trailhead, then hiked five miles down a private logging road until at last it petered out. This was followed by miles of virgin, old-growth timber, so tall that it was always dusk beneath and the forest floor was soft and completely free of saplings.

But then he left the Five Ponds Wilderness, the forest fell away behind him, and he began the approach to Desolation Lake. And here was where his fast, easy pace suddenly slowed to a crawl. The country grew ugly, barren, and nearly impossible to traverse. The wilderness between him and the mountain became a labyrinth of outwash bogs, blowdowns, and “kettle holes,” forcing him to watch every step he took. There was no trail, of course, not even a herd path, and with ravines running at crisscrosses to each other he’d had to rely frequently on his Garmin Oregon handheld GPS. More than once he’d slipped on treacherous, barely visible rocks covered with lichen. Thank God he’d decided on wearing his off trailboots—otherwise he’d have turned an ankle, or worse, long before now.

After another quarter mile, he stopped again. The way ahead was blocked by an overlapping downfall too tight for him to squeeze through with the heavy pack on his back. Cursing under his breath, he shrugged out of the pack, found the widest hole in the downfall, shoved the pack through, then wiggled his way in behind it. The dry ends of branches poked at his limbs and scratched his face.

On the far side of the downfall he put the pack back on, making sure that the compression straps were good and tight. This late in the day a pack began to get heavy, and he wanted to make sure its contents stayed stable.

He spent a moment, shrugging his shoulders this way and that, getting the pack into position. Even though the majority of hikers used internal backpacks these days, Palmer still preferred one with an external frame—in his case, a Kelty Tioga. He tended to travel heavy, and he found externals easier not only to pack, but to carry and balance as well.

The sun had disappeared, and the landscape was growing darker by the minute. The change was actually perceptible to him, as if some god of nature was slowly turning down the dimmer switch. A full moon was rising into the black sky, lending a strange, dappled, almost spectral luminescence to the landscape, but he wasn’t going to rely on the moonlight: it had the tendency to camouflage things, hiding sinkholes and gullies, and he’d learned the hard way not to trust to chance. He reached for the flashlight clipped to his belt, plucked it off, and turned it on.

By now it was past nine. As he started off again, he did a mental calculation and determined his pace had slowed to something like half a mile an hour. Of course, he could keep going until he reached Desolation Lake and camp on the shore. But he wouldn’t get there until at least midnight, and by that time he’d be too whipped for an enjoyable climb the next day. No: there hadto be a spot, some spot, in this godforsaken wilderness flat and bare enough for him to pitch his three-season tent and spread out his cookware. A hot meal, a soft sleeping bag, were beginning to seem like unattainable luxuries.

Not for the first time, as he made his way carefully forward, flashlight beam licking this way and that, he wished that he was back in the High Peaks region of the park. True, the trails there were often as wide as superhighways, and you were always trippin gover other hikers, but at least you had a regular, goddamn forest around you with clearings and glades, not this alien riot of—

He stopped by a cluster of witch-hobble. He’d been so absorbed in his thoughts, and in his perusal of the treacherous ground ahead of him, that he hadn’t realized there was a strange smell in the air. He sniffed. It was faint, but discernible: sour, a little musky; not skunklike exactly but definitely unpleasant.

Palmer shone his light around, but there was nothing. He shrugged and continued.

The moon was rising higher in the sky, bathing Desolation Mountain in its lambent glow. Three miles left. Hell, maybe he should just try to bushwhack his way to the lake, after all. But then there was the trip back to consider, and he had to—

There it was again: that smell. It was stronger now, and fouler: rank and animal.

Once again he stopped and searched around with his flashlight, feeling a prickle of anxiety this time. Small saplings and a latticework of flattened, fallen tree limbs reflected the beam back at him. The bright circle of light made everything outside it pitch black.

Palmer shook his head. He was letting the eerie desolation ofthis place get to him. He’d barely seen an animal all day, just a single raccoon and a couple of young foxes. And that had been back in the old-growth forest. No animal in its right mind larger than a mouse would live in this kind of shit. His frustrating slog had to end sooner or later. And once he had a bellyful of chili inside him and his favorite inflatable air mattress beneath his sleeping bag, he’d be—

Now the smell was back, worse than ever, and with it came a sound—a deep, guttural noise, half grunt, half snarl. It sounded angry—angry and hungry.

Without even pausing to think, Palmer began to run. He ran as fast as the heavy pack allowed, the flashlight beam striping crazily ahead of him, panting, gasping, bounding over fallen trees and kettle holes, as the grunting and snuffling grew increasingly loud behind him.

And then his foot snagged on a protruding root; he crashed heavily to the ground; a heavy weight that had nothing to do with his pack pressed suddenly against his back—a horrible, rending pain like nothing he’d experienced in his life clawed across his face and neck as the reek washed over him like a wave, then another explosion of pain, then still another . . . and then everything faded, first to red, and then to black.

THREE MONTHS LATER

From the suburbs of New Haven, the route led north to Waterbury, then west along the meandering line of I-84 until—after it crossed into New York State and passed over the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge—it intersected with I-87, the New York Thruway. Here the route became much more direct, arrowing north until the low, furred peaks of the Catskills began to assert themselves to the left. Traffic on this Friday afternoon grew heavier as Albany approached. It thinned out somewhat at Glens Falls, where all the trailers and flatbeds carrying Formula One vehicles bound for Watkins Glen exited. It thinned even further at Lake George, which even this late in the year drew tourists and weekending families.

It was at the first rest stop after Lake George that Jeremy Logan pulled over his vintage Lotus Elan and—although the afternoon was lengthening and the temperature hovering just above sixty—stopped long enough to put the roadster’s top down before proceeding.

It had been fifteen years since he’d last made this journey, but this last part had always been his favorite leg and he was determined to enjoy it. With each passing town—Pottersville, Schroon Lake, North Hudson— the traffic lessened and the mountains around him swelled as if heaved up from the ground. The dark bulks of the High Peaks of the Adirondacks rose skyward, proud and inviolate, clad in their October hues of green and russet and gold, dwarfing the Catskills he’d traveled through not three hours before. The air that rushed past his windscreen became deliciously cool, freighted with the smell of pine. The setting sun gilded the bald tops of the taller mountains, while the valleys and cols between them— thick with spruce, beech, and birch— grew ever darker and more mysterious.

The Northway— as this section of I-87 was called— was as scarred and seamed with tar sealant as he’d always remembered, and with a little imagination he could relive the last time he’d made this drive, with John Coltrane and Bill Evans just barely audible on the half-muted stereo and Karen, his wife, sitting in the passenger seat. There was something about the ever-increasing height and bulk of the surrounding mountains, the afterglow and fast-onrushing night, that always seemed to coincide with the lastl eg of the six-hour drive from Connecticut, that quickened his pulse and whetted a taste for adventure.

Logan had never been much of an outdoors type—he’d been a passable fly fisherman as a youth, taught by a father with a mania for the sport, and he could usually manage to finish eighteen holes of golf with a score of less than three digits. But he had no patience for such things as jogging or running marathons— such activities seemed paralyzingly dull to him, a hamster running in its wheel. But one long weekend early into his marriage, another couple who were both assistant professors at Yale and card-carrying AMC members had convinced him and Kit to come along for a climb up Whiteface Mountain, just north of Lake Placid. Logan had accepted with reservations, only to find the mini-vacation a delight. There was something deeply satisfying about hiking up a mountain— selecting a route, navigating the trail blazes, enjoying the beauty of the changing microclimate as you ascended, pacing yourself for the truly steep stretches . . . and then at last breaking through the tree line and following the meandering rock cairns to the summit itself. Not only were the views remarkable, but there was something ineffably rewarding about conquering the peak itself. No, that wasn’t right, because these mountains could not be conquered, or even tamed—it was more like coming to an accommodation, an understanding, with them. It was something you could never get from a treadmill session. After Whiteface, he and his wife had returned again, several years in a row, becoming modest “peak baggers”: Algonquin, Cascade, Porter, Giant, and of course Mount Marcy— at 5,344 feet the tallest mountain in New York State.

But then their careers—his as a scholar-professor and hers as a professional cellist—had increasingly taken over their time. And what vacations they had were taken up with trips abroad to supplement his research, or to spend a week at Tanglewood when Karen was playing at the music festival there— and the three- day weekends in the High Peaks fell away behind them, just as the Northway was doing now in his rearview mirror.

At Underwood, he turned off the interstate onto NY 73 and followed the road as it wandered through thick forests and past fierce waterspouts rushing down stony gorges. He drove through Keene Valley and the town of Keene itself, then arrowed directly westward for Lake Placid and, beyond it, the village of Saranac Lake. The towns were a little larger than he remembered, and on their verges the footprint of man cut a little more heavily into the forest, but the changes were subtle and he remained irresistibly reminded of trips past.

“It’s almost the same, Kit,” he said as he drove. “It’s like our last trip up, when we climbed Skylight and almost got lost in the fog.”

He often found himself talking to Kit, dead of cancer now for more than five years. Naturally he did this only when he was by himself—save for Kit, of course—and yet it was less of a one-way conversation than one might have expected.

At Saranac Lake, he turned left onto Route 3, heading in the direction of Tupper Lake. Only the occasional car passed him now in the other direction, headlights winking in the humid forest air. He was not as familiar with this part of the park and—with an intense darkness closing in around him— he drove more slowly. About five miles farther on, his headlights illuminated a large, open gate cut into the thick spruce forest to his right. There was no signage on or beside the gate, merely a large metal symbol: a cumulus cloud hovering over a rippling watery surface.

He turned in, followed a bumpy, heavily rutted dirt road fo rperhaps two thousand feet—and then, suddenly, the forest parted to reveal a vast, weathered, three-storied structure of dark brown wood and rough-hewn stone. It sat beneath a massive, shingled-frame roof in Swiss chalet style that went from the serried chimneys along its ridge vent almost all the way to the ground. Twigwork balconies ran along the entire second floor as well as the third, shorter floor, and from within the large, red-framed windows that stood in series, the welcome glow of countless lamps and fireplaces beckoned.

This was Cloudwater, Logan’s destination. But it had not always been known by that name. Sixty years before, it had been Rainshadow Lodge: one of the “Great Camps” built in the late nineteenth century as summer residences of the very rich along the lake shores of wild corners in upstate New York and New England. And Rainshadow Lodge, with its quintessential “Adirondack Rustic” architecture and huge cupolaed boathouse situated on Rainshadow Lake, had been one of the most famous and grandiose of all.

But all that had changed in 1954. Now its function was to serve as far more than just an oversized rustic summer playground for one of Manhattan’s wealthiest families. And Logan had driven all the way up from his Connecticut home to take full advantage of that new function.

Following a semicircular drive directly before the building, he parked the car, stepped out, ascended the steps—worn and incredibly wide—and walked past the lines of white- painted Adirondack chairs into the lobby. It was warm and welcoming, indirectly lit, with a mellow, golden, faintly hazy atmosphere redolent of wood smoke. He felt the oddly pleasing sensation of a fly sinking into amber.

A reception desk of cinnamon-colored wood, glowing from what appeared to be the application of fifty coats of lacquer, stood directly ahead. A middle-aged woman behind it looked up at his approach, smiled.

“I’m Jeremy Logan,” he told her. “Checking in.”

“Just a minute.” The woman consulted a tablet computer tucked behind the desk as if it were an anachronism to be kept hidden. “Ah, yes. Dr. Logan. You’ll be joining us for six weeks.”

“That’s right.”

“Very good.” She studied the tablet for a few more moments. “Dr. Jeremy Logan?” She looked up suddenly, recognition flashing in her eyes before being quickly suppressed. “But it says here ‘historian.’”

“I am an historian. Among other things.”

After a moment, the woman nodded, then glanced back down at the tablet. “I see you’ve been booked into the Thomas Cole cabin. By Mr. Hartshorn himself. That cabin is usually reserved for musicians or artists—writers are always assigned rooms in the main lodge.”

“I’ll remember to thank him.”

“It’s just past the boathouse, not two minutes’ walk. I could show it to you now, and then you can park your car in the assigned lot and retrieve your bags.”

“Thank you, I’d appreciate that.”

Turning around and unlocking a wooden cabinet behind her, she took a large key from one of several dozen brass pegs. Then, relocking the cabinet and coming out from behind the desk, she smiled once again, then led the way back outside and down the hard-packed dirt road to a nearby path into the woods, flanked by walkway lights in Tiffany-style glass. The perfume of pine was almost overpowering. Every fifty feet or so a smaller path diverged from the main one, heading either to the left or the right, each with a small carved signpost: Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Moran, William Hart.

In short order, she turned down a final bend in the path, where the signboard read Thomas Cole. Just ahead, half hidden among the trees, was a two-story Mission-style cabin, charmingly rusticated and yet of obviously modern construction, with a peeled-log facade and granite fieldstone foundation.

The woman handed him the key. “I’m sure you’ll find everything you need inside,” she said. She looked at her watch. “It’s almost eight. The kitchen closes at nine, so you’ll probably want to get settled in without delay.”

“Thank you,” Logan said. She smiled once again, then turned and retreated back down the pathway. Hefting the key, Logan mounted the steps, then unlocked the front door and stepped in. Snapping on the bank of lights just within, he quickly took in the surroundings: wide-planked floorboards, antique rugs, a modern worktable with a Herman Miller Aeron chair set before it, built-in bookcases and cabinets of mahogany, a huge fireplace of rough stone, and a freestanding spiral staircase going up to a bedroom/sleeping loft above. Through a door in the far wall of the room, he could see a kitchen complete with microwave, Wolf stovetop, and refrigerated wine cellar. It was an aesthetically pleasing, yet highly functional, combinationof old and new.

As he looked around, Logan allowed himself a slow, contented sigh. “Kit,” he told his wife, “I think this place is exactly right. And I’ve given myself six weeks. If I can’t finish it here, then I guess it may never get finished.”

Then, leaving the lights on, he exited the cabin to retrieve his luggage.

Fresh, thrilling, and a lot of fun (4.5 star)
By Matthew A. Bille
This outing for enigmaologist Jeremy Logan offers a lot of fun for his growing number of fans. While it has slow spots and not every twist is a surprise, readers will learn more about Logan in the course of his effort to relax and write a monograph on history at a retreat that is a little too close to some strange, savage murders. Investigating at the behest of a new and interesting character, a philosopher-forest ranger he knew at college, Logan finds a hidden laboratory run by a mad scientist (as in, literally mad at everyone) and a local belief in lycanthropy. This sounds cliched, but the Logan novels are out to put a new spin on classic horror tales, and Child keeps it fresh. The atmosphere is wonderfully real and creepy. There is some interesting real science, some way-out invented science, a little bit of the paranormal, and some nods to the old Hammer Films universe as Logan risks his life to figure out who or what is haunting the remote Appalachian forest. As a science writer and a novelist, I appreciate the way Child can meld the real (gene therapy), the speculative (what if full moon effects are not mythical after all, we've just not studied them right?), and the horrific.

Read this book !!
By iraqralph
This author is, in my opinion, on of the finest writers existing today. If he writes something on a bathroom wall I will make the trip to read it. This is another example of his exemplary characterization, well thought out story flow and interesting plot build. As you may have guessed I liked this story.

Amazon.com Review
A game has to be able to think, or at least imitate thought sufficiently to render a convincing representation of some character or phenomenon. This sort of logic requires planning on the part of the programmer: A swordfighter not only has to find his enemy and engage him in combat, but know how to react if the opponent runs away, dies, or summons his buddies. The better the game designer is at endowing characters with behaviors, capabilities, and reactions, the more realistic and exciting his or her games will be. A soldier that can shoot at targets in the distance is okay, but a soldier that can also lay an ambush, shoot around corners, and fight with a knife is a lot more exciting. AI Game Programming Wisdom 2 comprises a series of article from accomplished game programmers about designing games that feature complex and lifelike behavior.

The contributors--there are dozens--share their professional experience in the field of simulating life in software. Some of their examples are crystal-clear--Nick Porcino's block diagrams that explain the behavior of artificial insects are one example. What's more, the compilation is remarkably comprehensive, addressing such issues as how collectives (such as platoons of soldiers) exhibit behavior that takes into account the perceptions of their members (as well as the lack of information--the fog of war). This book is carefully designed to help game architects plan more exciting and realistic environments for their players. --David Wall

Topics covered: How to design a computer game in which computer-managed characters need to behave intelligently. There's coverage of how to encode a character's motivations, how to make a character relate to a group, how to make characters move through and perceive space, and how to make a character learn over time.

A fantastic "a la carte" tool kit
By Dave Mark
Being in the game development business, I am always on the lookout for new and different tricks, techniques and strategies. When most programmers go to the lectures, panels and roundtables at the Game Developers Conference, we are looking to pick up this same sort of material... we share ideas and approaches - but rarely get the chance to get down to the code details to make it easy for us to implement those ideas into our own work. This book makes that possible.
Along the lines of the other "Gems" series of books, this collection is filled with ACTUAL techniques and code chunks that are used by some of the top professionals in the industry. Just flipping through the list of the contributors to the book is like going around the room at one of the AI roundtables at the GDC... in fact, Steve Woodcock and Neil Kirby are 2 of the "3 AI guys" that RUN those roundtables! (The 3rd being Eric Dybsand who has contributed to the "Gems" series but not this title.)
Many books on game development are informative. This one is actually USEFULL. I have personally adopted Steve Rabin's source code from the section "Implementing a State Machine Language" into my own game and it has saved me many hours of development and improved the readability and understandability of my code for the rest of the team. Just that section alone has netted at least a 1000:1 return on the cost of this book. Other sections have given me a different approach on how to handle the economic strategy layer that I could have come upon myself... but was able to implement a lot quicker than if I had done it myself. It was definately worth the price.
Are any of these sections worth the purchase price for YOU? I suppose that depends on how much you value you your time. Once you equate the cost of the book to the man hours you save, it's a no brainer!

Up to date coverage of all things AI. Highly recommended.
By Kam
Written in the same format as the Game Programming Gems books this book should be the first thing you buy if you're serious about AI. Well written and edited by some of today's most knowledgable AI programmers the topics covered include path planning, race AI, team tactics, finite state machines, scripting etc. The path planning section of the book alone is priceless. I did feel there may have been a little overlap with some of the AI sections in the Game Programming Gems books and one or two pearls of wisdom could have been expanded upon but other than that it was hard to fault the book. Therefore, get it! Read it! Treasure it!
