The Haves and the Have Nots: A Brief and Idiosyncratic History of Global Inequality, by Branko Milanovic

Who is the richest person in the world, ever? Does where you were born affect how much money youll earn over a lifetime? How would we know? Why, beyond the idle curiosity, do these questions even matter? In The Haves and the Have-Nots, Branko Milanovic, one of the worlds leading experts on wealth, poverty, and the gap that separates them, explains these and other mysteries of how wealth is unevenly spread throughout our world, now and through time. Milanovic uses history, literature and stories straight out of todays newspapers, to discuss one of the major divisions in our social lives: between the haves and the have-nots.

He reveals just how rich Elizabeth Bennet's suitor Mr. Darcy really was; how much Anna Karenina gained by falling in love; how wealthy ancient Romans compare to todays super-rich; where in Kenyan income distribution was Obamas grandfather; how we should think about Marxism in a modern world; and how location where one is born determines his wealth. He goes beyond mere entertainment to explain why inequality matters, how it damages our economics prospects, and how it can threaten the foundations of the social order that we take for granted. Bold, engaging, and illuminating, The Haves and the Have-Nots teaches us not only how to think about inequality, but why we should.

Engaging and clear
By Ecologist
I'm not an economist, but I am curious about the alarming increase in inequality. I cannot vouch for its accuracy or whether it reflects accepted or well supported ideas by economists or other social scientists. That said, it was incredibly clear, engaging, and in rich in detail and ideas. A great read and very thought provoking. It's logic and theses are compelling and the data it provides here and there are quite absorbing. It considers the history, competing ideas, causes and consequences.

I'm not sold on the vignette approach - though it did help in navigating complex ideas. I was also disappointed that the role of natural capital and environmental sustainability did not figure in discussions of poverty and inequality. I also found the end, or the final vignette about the first and third worlds, not really a great close to an engaging read.

I totally recommend this book, however. Easily the best on the topic I have read. Beautifully written, and I feel I have learned more about this important topic than I have with any other book or media.

Good Source for Info on Inequality
By George Fulmore
If, like me, you are a nut for statistical data about the world, this is a good book for you...assuming you can stay with it to the end. The author presents a wide range of information as the book builds and builds, but it is near the end that the really good stuff comes. It is worth the wait, in my opinion. At the same time, there are sections of the book that bob and weave a bit. And finding a consistent central theme or focus is not easy.

The author is an economist and an academic. He does not appear, however, to be a great humanist. But he knows his history, pointing out that gaps in earnings primarily occur when "people move from agriculture into industry." He points out that folks around the world were relatively equal prior to the industrial revolution in England, and that most folks in most nations at that time were barely at a subsistence level.

Oh, sure, there were rich Kings and Nobles and such along the way, but they were nothing compared to the wealthy industrialists that were to emerge with industrialization. And as far as regions of the world, it is in the first half of the 18th century that Western Europe and North America really begin to separate from the rest of the world in terms of wealth. Prior to that, the comparative wealth of countries in the world was far more even.

In this line of thinking, the author feels that this is the factor that really defeated Karl Marx and his theories: Instead of the differences in inequality between classes around the world leading to change, it was the differences developed between countries and/or regions of the world that would lead to inequalities. But "Workers of the World, Unite," became more and more irrelevant under this scenario. Workers in some parts of the world saw great improvements in their lives, while workers in other parts of the world did not, essentially, through no fault of their own.

The author points out that for most of recent history inequality was not seen as all that bad. After all, a guy like Henry Ford created a ton of jobs in the process of getting filthy rich. And the author spends time discussing relative extreme wealth in the history of the world, with Mexican Carlos Slim coming out the winner there. He also talks about socialism vs. capitalism, and he tries to make the point that redistribution of wealth may not be the way to go. But I don't think any of this stuff is what makes this a great book. No, I think, again, the main value of the book is in the numbers he eventually gives us concerning inequality.
And in that light, he makes an interesting point about the Soviet Union, before its breakup, having a ratio of about 6:1 between the wealthiest republic, Russia, and the poorest, Tajikistan. In contrast, he tells us that the ratio of inequality between regions in France is now about 1.6:1, between U.S. states about 1.5:1, and in Germany 1.4:1. Back to extremes, he tells us that in the former country of Yugoslavia, the range in wealth between the highest and lowest republics was about 8:1.

To begin to measure inequality within countries and around the world, we need household income numbers from around the world. We need the ability to compare GDPs per capita in one country vs. another. And while he tells us that there are ways to do comparisons back before solid data was available, he does not spend a lot of time with this. What he wants to get to is to the comparisons between countries, based on their recent GDPs per person, and to the comparisons between the rich and the poor within the countries, themselves, in the world today.

Unfortunately, the ratio between the richest and the poorest country in the world today is more than 100:1. In some cases, essentially everyone in one of the richest countries is better off than everyone in one of the poorest countries. And this inequality can occur within one country, as well. For example, in Kenya in the time of Barack Obama's grandfather, everyone who was white was better off than anyone who was Black. Said another way, today, the poorest Americans are better off than more than two-thirds of the rest of the world, with half of the world having a per capita income of no more than $2 per day. And said yet another way, fully 80% of one's standing in life is simply due to the geography of one's birth.

Of interest, per the author, this inequality would have been the likely basis of President Obama's mother sending her son back to the U.S., rather than to have him continue to live in Indonesia: The projection that one educated and living in the U.S., even in a family of a government worker and a shoe salesman, would be better off than just about anyone under any situation in Indonesia.

Per the author, until recently, the collection of income distribution was more of a national thing than international. But once enough national data was available, this is where the Gini Coefficient comes in. It compares the income of each person with the incomes of all other people, individually. A Gini number of zero means that all persons have the same income, while a number of 100 would mean that only one person has all the money. This number can be used to compare countries of the world, countries within a region, or people within a single country. For humanists, the lower the number, the better. A reasonable number is about 35. Some examples:

In the late 70s, the U.S. had a Gini Coefficient of about 35. In contrast, Latin American countries are seldom below 50. On a global level, the Gini is about 70, which means that 30% of the world has more wealth than the other 70%. But within this, we know that the wealthiest 10% in the world receive about 56% of the world's income. The top 5% gets about 37%; thus, the ratio between the top and the bottom, in this comparison, reaches 200:1. Global inequality is probably the highest it ever has been in the history of the world.

And who are those at the top? The top 1% in the world number about 60 million, with nearly 50 million of these living in Western Europe or North America.
But, says the author, the impact of all this is probably shown most by immigration numbers, which involves less than 1/10th of one percent of the world's population per year. He seems to say that this matters, however, only if emigration gets worse and/or if one country is so poor that it does really bad things that have an impact on the rest of the world. For example, if a bird flu or some other pandemic starts in an area of the world with extreme poverty, this can spread to other parts of the world. Otherwise, the author seems to say that the conditions of wealth or poverty are relative within a single country.

But back to numbers: In an interesting contrast between the European Union and the United States, the author points out that the EU has more inequality among countries than the U.S. has between states. In each state in the U.S., there are rich and poor. But, overall, the GDP per capita in a comparison between U.S. states is not significant. It is about 1.5:1. But in the EU, where Luxembourg is the wealthiest country and Romania the poorest, the ratio is about 7:1. In effect, this means that virtually all those in Luxembourg are richer than those in Romania. This cannot be said about those in American states, New Hampshire having the highest per capita income vs. Arkansas with the lowest. But within some states, the ratio can be extreme. Within Texas and Tennessee, the Gini Coefficient is around 45!

And in world regions comparisons, Latin American countries are more like the United States, with the high levels of inequality being amongst members of the same country, rather than the per capita income of the various countries. In Asia, the opposite is true, with the differences being greatest in the relative per capita incomes between countries. But here is where it gets crazy: The overall Gini numbers for Latin America and for Asia are about the same: 56 vs. 60.

To conclude this lengthy review, the author says "the main drivers of global inequality today are differences in between-country incomes." He also says that things have gotten more unequal over the past 40 years. Since 1975, excess money has been available to the wealthiest countries. It simply got into the hands of the bankers and investment types, who did what people like them do best: They created ways that the excess money could generate even more excess money. Of course, the recent world-wide economic slowdown slowed the excess-money stuff a bit.

And then we have China and India. They would appear to be wild cards in all of this. China, of course, has made huge strides in improving its per capita income of its people, of late. India, too, has made great strides. And Brazil is in play here, as well.

So, we near the end of the book, where the author has this to say: "The key challenges of the 21st Century may be summarized as follows: how to bring Africa up, how to peacefully bring China in, and how to wean Latin America off of its self-obsession and bring it into the real world."

Hmmmmm. This is the first time we've heard about Africa, I think. And the stuff about Latin America needs to be better explained. So, the truth is that the author has not written the book to project or predict the outcome of this story. He's just trying to get more folks up to date and on board.
If you've gotten this far, welcome. You know more than you did before you read the book...assuming you now go out and buy and read it.

Must Read for Those Concerned About Inequality
By blue ocotillo
Milanovic hails from Serbia; he now lives and works in the US. In The Haves and the Have-Nots, he covers numerous important social issues related to inequality without getting overly partisan or polemical. The book uses vignettes to support the premises of its three parts (essays): inequality among individuals of the same nation, inequality among countries, and inequality in the world among individuals and nations. This is an effective, if at times quirky, ploy to tell the inequality tale.
I appreciate and like his "outsider" viewpoint. His World Bank experience (as an economic researcher) impresses the reader without losing the reader with overly complicated arguments or formulas. His views on migration - essay 3 - are especially enlightening. "In the long run the antimigration battle cannot be won - if globalization continues" (p. 163).
If you are concerned about inequality and consider yourself involved in the conversation about it (including the fight against it), this book is simply a must read.

The gripping history of the ferocious turning point of World War Two, when Hitler's armies were halted on the Eastern Front

At the moment of crisis in late 1941 on the Eastern Front, with the forces of Hitler massing on the outskirts of Moscow, the miraculous occurred: Moscow was saved. Yet this feat of endurance was a prelude to a long and arduous retreat in which Soviet troops, inspired by deep beliefs in the sacred Motherland, pushed back German forces steeled by the vision of the Ubermensch--the iron-willed fighter. Supported by tanks and ski battalions, Soviet troops engaged in this desperate struggle in the harshest Russian weather.

Michael Jones draws upon a wealth of new eyewitness testimonies from both sides of the conflict to vividly chronicle this pivotal chapter in the Second World War as he takes us from the German invasion of the Soviet Union on the morning of June 22 through the counteroffensive that carried into the spring of 1942. From the German soldier finding his comrades frozen into blocks of ice to the Russian lieutenant crying with rage at the senseless destruction of his unit, the author shows us the faces of war when the Wehrmacht was repelled and the titanic and cruel struggle of two world powers forged the fate of Europe.

From Publishers Weekly
Jones's earlier Leningrad and Stalingrad established this British military historian's skill in conveying the human dimensions of the Russo-German War. His new narrative addresses the German sweep through Russia in the summer of 1941, its defeat at the gates of Moscow by a rejuvenated Red Army, and the massive Soviet counterattack that pushed the Wehrmacht to the edge of destruction. Jones makes a convincing case that the Fuehrer's "stand fast" order in December 1941 entailed unnecessary losses. Retreat, he argues, did not inevitably mean collapse. The point remains debatable. But there is no question of Jones's success presenting, in their own words, the growing conviction of the Germans doing the fighting that Barbarossa had been a compound mistake. "Does no one realize what it is like here?" asked one bewildered corps commander. Across the battle line, six months of atrocities demonstrated to the Russian people that whatever was wrong with the U.S.S.R., the Germans were not the solution. "I vowed to kill as many of them as possible," wrote one Soviet junior officer. His words are an epigram for an apocalyptic war, perceptively evoked here. 8 pages of b&w photos; 3 maps. (Dec.) (c)

From Booklist
A military historian with particular expertise on the eastern front of WWII offers this grimly absorbing account of one of the battles that shaped the whole campaign: the German retreat from Moscow in December 1941. Already overextended and undersupplied, the Germans were in no position to resist a massive Soviet counterattack. The next two months were the stuff of nightmares for the soldiers on both sides, whose letters and memoirs have been exhaustively used to paint a horrifying picture of starvation, cold weather, nonexistent medical care, and a complete lack of compassion for opponents (two million Russian POWs died during this period). The Germans suffered an additional defeat, because Hitler believed that his No retreat! order saved his army from rout and from its defeatist generals. His assumption of the supreme command, fully equipped with vast arrogance and little skill, was another large stone that eventually helped build the tomb of the Third Reich. Sound and readable. --Roland Green

Ground-level look at the Eastern Front
By Scott Whitmore
The fall of the Iron Curtain and the Soviet Union, and the subsequent release of archives and documents, has been a boon to military historians like Michael Jones. Jones has written several books on the Eastern Front, including my most recent read: The Retreat: Hitler's First Defeat.

The Retreat does not break any new ground in describing the Red Army turning back Hitler's armies at the gates of Moscow during the critical months of December 1941-February 1942, but where it stands out is the narrative method. Jones draws heavily from first-hand accounts in diaries, letters, unit histories, and interviews of soldiers and civilians people on both sides, crafting a very human perspective of events.

Of particular note for me was the number of very senior German officers who realized the Nazi's harsh treatment of Soviet prisoners was creating a human tragedy that would have severe consequences. We could argue whether these officers could or should have done more than simply report the situation -- prisoners were starved, beaten, diseased, overworked, and out-and-out murdered while held in ad-hoc camps with little protection from the harsh winter -- but the record at least shows they were aware and concerned.

Tens of thousands of Soviet prisoners died in German captivity, and the Red Army carefully ensured its soldiers were aware it was happening -- ensuring most Soviet soldiers would fight fanatically and with utter hatred for the Nazi invaders.

Common German soldiers were also aware of what was happening with prisoners, and more directly the civilian populace. There are several instances in The Retreat in which individual soldiers from both sides displayed humanity and compassion, including a spontaneous Christmas mass attended by combatants and civilians from both sides.

Of course these incidents are overshadowed by the brutality and no-holds-barred fighting which is the common -- and correctly held -- perception of warfare on the Eastern Front. Many German soldiers and senior officers shared Hitler's rampant racism and hate of the Soviet system, and their actions and words show this clearly. Still, it is refreshing to see the views of a few individuals change over the course of the book, as they come to grips with seeing the results of their actions.

My largest quibble with this book is the lack of photos in the Kindle edition. The author speaks in the preface of obtaining photos during interviews with participants, and the hardcover listing on Amazon.com indicates eight pages of photos, but evidently these were not deemed necessary for the eBook version.

I found The Retreat to be very interesting and I would recommend it to anyone interested in getting a ground-level look at action on the Eastern Front. It was a quick read, with Jones setting the stage by providing strategic updates on the situation before shifting to first-person accounts that added color and drama.

A Paul Carell type of read
By DrBig
I'm not going to repeat the points already made in the excellent 3-5 star reviews already posted; I largely agree with them.

I would offer that this book reminded me of Paul Carell's "Hitler Moves East", although much more balanced. It captured the initial enthusiasm felt by the troops for their belief in Hitler's crusade in the east, followed by growing doubts as Summer passed into Winter, the temperature dropped & Ivan showed no signs of collapse as the German Army was promised. What really jumped out at me were the atrocities committed by the regular German Army in 1941, often advertised as the excesses of the SS in other works. Granted there were honorable German soldiers & they are adequately portrayed in this book, but in large, the average German soldier didn't have the time, resources, and moral compass to behave with dignity in the east. Everything in Barbrossa/Typhoon was extreme. The volume of prisoners was extreme, the wear & tear on man & machine was extreme, the climate was extreme, the zeal of the defenders was extreme, and German resources were few. No food or shelter for the POWs, no winter clothing for the troops, no replacements for the excessive losses.

I give 4 out of 5 stars for a few technical faults. a) the claim that the T-34 was first encountered in Typhoon, and b) the lack of a decent map

Excellent
By Thomas Reiter
First, I should say that if I could have, I would have given this book 4 1/2 stars, rather than 4, because it is an excellent book for what it is, which is a collection of German-centric anecdotes from fall 41-spring 42 regarding the fighting around Moscow. The author includes numerous memorable accounts about the fighting during this period, as well the the suffering endured by both armies and civilians. Importantly, he doesn't seem to have a ideological agenda, and includes many interesting accounts regardless of whether it makes the Germans or Sov side look good or bad, competent or incompetent.

The only slight flaws in this book are:
1) while the author includes a limited number of accounts from the Sov side, the vast majority are from the German side. The quality of the German accounts generally makes up for this, but it would have made an excellent book even better to have used more Sov sources.

2) The author doesn't include quite enough about the "big picture." While the author gives a general description of what was going on with the overall front, I think he could have done a bit better at tying the individual accounts into the overall action.

That said, these "criticisms" are really quibbles--if you are interested in East Front action, you'll almost certainly greatly enjoy this book.

The Circular Economy: A Wealth of Flows - 2nd Edition, by Ken Webster

A circular economy has profound consequences for production, employment, education, money and finance but also induces a shift in public policy and taxation. The economic advantage of this model lies in designing out waste, enabling access over ownership, favouring radical resources productivity, with prospect of rebuilding natural capital and resilience.

Since the first edition of this volume published in 2015, the global economy has remained relatively subdued and pressure on resources, especially in terms of waste and carbon emissions, continues. More than ever, the circular economy gives the direction of travel, and appears as a model for economic prosperity.

This revised volume contains one entirely new chapter, expanding on the role of digital; on how we see the world; how the economy really works and how we can act within it. The other major revision is in rewriting the final chapter, as it becomes obvious, argues the author, that current social tensions and the rise of populism mean that the evolution of an attractive economic model is no longer just a desirable development, but a matter of some urgency.

The foreword is written by Ellen MacArthur and the book includes contributions from Walter Stahel from the Product-Life Institute, Geneva and Jocelyn Blériot, Executive Officer at the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

Review
"A Wealth of Flows is a huge addition helping to make circular economy a reality. The book creates a clear and vivid overview of how a circular economy can look like and what kind of changes we have to make. This way, more and more people understand what it exactly means in practice, and how brilliant our future can be."--Prof. Dr. Michael Braungart, founder and CEO of EPEA Internationale Umweltforschung GmbH. "Ken Webster has provided a compelling overview of one of the big ideas - and imperatives - of our time: how to convert our linear economy, that excels in making waste out of natural resources, into a circular economy that cycles and recycles resources to the benefit of humans and the environment. This book needs to be very widely read."--Paul Ekins, Pr. of Resources and Environmental Policy and Director of the UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources. "Ken Webster shows us how the circular economy moves us beyond our current world of limits based on 'less is more' and shows us a world of recurrent abundance based on 'endless is more'. The circular economy is rich with growth opportunities for all generations; it is going to take us all, and it is going to take forever... and that is the point."--Bill McDonough, founding principal of William McDonough & Partners, co-founder of McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC). "Ken Webster's book is more than a message of hope for a better path forward. It is a vivid and colorful illustration of how the circular economy is growing to challenge and ultimately replace the polluting and wasteful manufacturing industries of past centuries."--Wendy Schmidt, Founder of The Schmidt Family Foundation, The Schmidt Ocean Institute "Ken Webster offers a comprehensive solutions set to today's economic and environmental challenges. The Circular Economy: A Wealth of Flows provides inspiration, and details a future state for our economy that is balanced, restorative and beneficial - for all."--Marty Neese, Chief Operating Officer of SunPower "Thorough, yet lively and often intriguing, Webster's book gives the interested reader an in-depth understanding of the key concepts behind the circular economy, backed with a multitude of real-world case histories, relevant quotes and extracts, and examples that demonstrate why the CE should be the wave of the future. This book is a terrific resource and and highly recommended to anyone interested in circular economy and resource efficiency."--Nabil Nasr, Ph.D. Associate Provost for Academic Affairs & Director, Golisano Institute for Sustainability, Rochester Institute of Technology

Bought this for every bride I know
By JenisaurusRex
I'm at that age where everyone I know is getting married, and I have bought this for every bride I know as an engagement present. They've all loved it and been so excited to use it to help them plan!! I hope someone buys it for me when I get engaged, but if no one steps up I will definitely order it myself! It's design is clean and easy to follow and it's smaller than your average book, making it easily portable to appointments and to take to work and work on during your lunch break! Highly recommended.

Love this book!
By lindsayE
I bought an entire library of wedding planning books during our 18 month engagement. This is one of 2 books that I was actually still referring to the week of our wedding. I loved the lists - and I used this book to keep me on track. I wrote lots of little notes of my own in the book as we were making decisions along the way. The book has kind of become a wedding planning keepsake, and I buy it for friends who are newly engaged as a gift.

This may seem unnecessary if you have the planner
By Melinda Hill
This may seem unnecessary if you have the planner, but I've found it to be a very handy companion to the planner. It is much more portable and contains some information that I didn't see in the planner. It's also a bit more streamlined, so it's nice to have when you meet with service providers. I highly recommend this book in addition to the planner or even as a stand alone planning guide.

I ordered a new book, but it was not new
By manminder s johal
The book I ordered has a pink sharpie all over the text. So it was not new and somebody else used it before. I am a guy and I hate using pink sharpie. URGGGHHH… Thanks for making me pay 24 bucks, I should have ordered a used book for $ 1.70… Now I can't even return it because my classes have already started. Thanks a lot!!!!!!!

A good guide to have at home, too
By Shannyn
Needed the book for grad school. It was in good shape and easy to navigate. Even though the class has ended, I am keeping the book at home as a guide for emergencies. I am not a nurse, so it is a great reference manual. I am also becoming FEMA-certified, so the book's topics make it easy for me to understand the continuing education material by both FEMA and the Dept. of Homeland Security.

Great! ...but read it in order...
By College Stealth
I’m happy about the release of this book, back to Camp Half Blood, and I admit the trip into Norse mythology was fun for a bit, but I’ve grown quite fond of our past protagonists and it was nice to have them back. One thing I would recommend, this book could be read on its own, without reading the others that have come before it, but I wouldn’t. There are some brief summaries of Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter, but it talks about the outcome of those events. Also, the book takes place at the start of Riordian’s last book Magnus Chase, and you know that based on what Annabeth is doing, she’s in Boston.

The book has Percy for a bit in it, but then it is primarily focused on Apollo and a new demi-god Meg. Like many of Riordian’s past books, the origins of Meg are a bit of a mystery. Uh, I really have to say, there are some hysterical reference in the book that are not entirely based on the knowledge of children in the normal YA range. Shout-out to a Rocky Horror mention! Anyway, the book is enjoyable to read as all the others and is quick.

Apollo is on earth as a mortal, the oracles have stopped prophesizing and there are a lot of tie-in’s to other stories that will emerge in the future, in particular Leo. I was worried that Apollo would annoy me, but his arrogance is amusing, and he has some pretty interesting narratives on his fatherhood, especially being proud of his children’s vanity. As a condition of his time on earth he must serve a demi-God, which is an enjoyable paring to read about and the character of Meg is unique and very strong. There’s still more to learn about her background though, which I am excited for in the future.

I don’t want to give too much away, but the new threat is a bit different from the past and pertains to historical figures, not simply the Gods and Goddesses in the traditional sense. The entire story is told from Apollo’s perspective and it’s kind of nice to have on-going pop-culture references, even as recent as Alabama Shakes.

I highly recommend it! However, wait to read this after you’ve read the other Percy Jackson books!

If you like Rick's other books, you'll enjoy this
By Canadian eReader
The Trials of Apollo Book One The Hidden Oracle by Rick Riordan is the start of a new Greek mythology series from middle grade staple Rick Riordan. This new series centres around the god Apollo, who has been stripped of his godly powers by his father, Zeus. Naturally, adventures and shenanigans ensue.

For me this read a little younger than the Heroes of Olympus series, more in line with Percy Jackson. Apollo’s human persona is aged 16, but he spends a lot of time hanging around with 13 year old Meg which naturally makes the feel of the book somewhat younger. Also, there is no emphasis at all on romantic relationships.

What I liked

Riordan’s writing style. After many series including Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Heroes of Olympus, Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, Riordan’s light, witty style should be familiar to most readers. If you enjoyed the earlier books, you will certainly enjoy this one. They are very funny. I breezed through The Hidden Oracle in an afternoon. While it is not necessary to have read the earlier series, I would strongly recommend doing so before picking up this latest one. There are many references to characters and events from previous entries that, while not necessary to enjoy the story, are enhanced by knowledge of both of the other Olympian series.

The protagonist. I was amused by Apollo – his attitude and the circumstances he kept finding himself in. In theme it’s very similar to Marvel’s Thor movie in which a god becomes mortal but takes some time to adjust to his new situation. I enjoyed Apollo’s character development and how he changes throughout the course of the adventure. I do have some concerns if that level of character development can be sustained through the other four planned books in the series, but time will tell.

Catchups on our other favourite demigods. In this book we touch base with our heroes from the previous series. It was good to hear how Percy, Annabeth, Jason, Piper, Leo and the others are all getting on with their post Gaea lives.

What I didn’t like

Perhaps because this was aimed at a younger audience, at times it was a little formulaic, especially if you know the previous book. Still, it’s more than made up for by Riordan’s wit and humour.

In summary, if you’ve enjoyed the previous books, you will certainly enjoy The Trials of Apollo. I gave it four stars out of five.

Wow! Just wow.
By Aimee Carpenter
This is one of the best books I have read. It was great that Rick kept Apollos arrogance but still made him realize that he had faults. I'm going to be real here and say that I was in tears on multiple occasions.

It was also great that he decided to let people like Leo and Calypso have the spot light instead of Percy and Annabeth. I was laughing so hard and some parts, I almost fell off the chair I was sitting on.

This is a book that you are going to want to read and will keep you on the edge of your toes waiting for the next one.

Negotiating the Impossible: How to Break Deadlocks and Resolve Ugly Conflicts (without Money or Muscle), by Deepak Malhotra

Some negotiations are easy. Others are more difficult. And then there are situations that seem hopeless. Conflict is escalating, people are getting aggressive, and no one is willing to back down. To top it off, you have little power, money, or other resources to work with. Harvard professor (and negotiation advisor to organizations around the world) Deepak Malhotra shows how to defuse even the most potentially explosive situations and to find success when things seem impossible.  Malhotra illustrates key lessons using behind-the-scenes stories of fascinating real-life negotiations, including drafting the US Constitution, resolving the Cuban Missile Crisis, ending bitter disputes in the NFL, and beating the odds in complex business situations, while showing how these same principles and tactics can be applied in everyday life.

INTRODUCTION

The Most Ancient Lesson in Peacemaking
Among the oldest peace treaties in history is the Treaty of Kadesh, which was negotiated between the Egyptian and Hittite empires over three thousand years ago, in the middle of the 13th century BCE With neither party willing to continue incurring the costs of war, and with each side wary of looming conflict with its other neighbors, Pharaoh Ramesses II and King Hattusili III sought to negotiate an end to the conflict. Such attempts are difficult not only because the issues at stake may be contentious or complex, but because, often, neither side wants to make the first move. The side that comes asking for peace may look weak rather than wise or magnanimous, a signal that no leader can afford to send. And yet, a deal was reached. Despite having been drafted thousands of years ago, the treaty has many of the hallmarks of more recent agreements, including provisions proclaiming the end to conflict, the repatriation of refugees, an exchange of prisoners, and a mutual assistance pact if either side were to be attacked by others.1

One other characteristic makes this accord similar to what we often see today—in peace treaties, commercial agreements, and successful efforts at resolving conflicts ranging from international disputes to arguments between spouses. This feature is apparent in the Treaty of Kadesh only because it was recorded in two languages: hieroglyphics (the Egyptian translation) and Akkadian (the Hittite translation). A comparison of the translations reveals that the two versions are, as we ought to expect, very similar. But there is at least one important difference. The Egyptian translation states that it was the Hittites who came asking for peace terms. The Hittite version claims exactly the opposite.

When it comes to deal making, diplomacy, and resolving disputes, it does not matter which culture you examine or what kind of negotiation you investigate. It does not matter why people were fighting or why they chose to settle their differences. Some things never change: the need for all sides to declare victory is at least as old as recorded history itself.

The Treaty of Kadesh also exposes a more fundamental insight about negotiation and peacemaking—one that lays the foundation for this book:

Even seemingly impossible deadlocks and conflicts can be resolved if we shed the assumption that our only sources of leverage are money and muscle.

This is especially important to keep in mind when you are dealing with a situation that seems hopeless. When even your most generous offers are being rejected, when your well-intentioned attempts at addressing the issues are being thwarted, and when you have little power with which to impose a solution, you need a different approach and other sources of leverage. This book provides such an approach and reveals those sources of leverage.

THREE WAYS TO NEGOTIATE THE IMPOSSIBLE

Some negotiations are easy. Others are more difficult. And then there are situations that seem downright impossible. These are ones in which you have little power and limited options. These are times when conflict is escalating, deadlock is worsening, and no one is willing to back down. These are situations where people are behaving in ways that seem irrational—or worse, with clearly hostile intent. These are problems without precedent, where even vast experience offers limited guidance.

But these are also the cases that, when handled skillfully, will become the stuff of legend.
This book is about such negotiations: deadlocked deals and ugly disputes that seemed completely hopeless. Until, that is, someone found a way to beat the odds without money or muscle. What might we learn from these stories and from those who lived them?

As anyone who has dealt with deadlock or conflict will attest, some of the hardest situations to resolve are those where your attempts at negotiating in good faith have failed and where you don't have the resources or power to bargain effectively. The reason people lose hope and begin to see the situation as impossible is that they have already tried their best to address the substance of the dispute—they simply have no more money or muscle left. But what if there were other levers you could use?

In this book, we will focus on three crucial levers that negotiators often ignore, underestimate, or mismanage, especially when they are accustomed to thinking of power in terms of money and muscle:

• The Power of Framing
• The Power of Process
• The Power of Empathy

In my teaching and advisory work with thousands of business executives and company owners, I have heard countless tales of deal makers who were negotiating against the odds. In my work for governments and policy makers who are trying to negotiate with terrorists and armed insurgents, I have many times encountered the feeling of despair that comes from tackling the seemingly impossible. And, in my observations of even ordinary conflicts of everyday life, I have seen people struggle with how to manage hostile people, difficult situations, and thorny issues. In all of these places, people sometimes make a bad situation worse—or a difficult problem seem impossible—by pinning their hopes on money and muscle and failing to appreciate the power of framing, process, and empathy.

What insights might we share with people who are dealing with nasty conflicts in business, policy, diplomacy, or everyday life? What lessons might they learn from the most harrowing case of nuclear brinkmanship in world history? How might they emulate a young man of little clout or stature who managed to dominate one of the most important meetings of the last millennium? What might they take from the text of the most ancient peace treaty known to be in existence? What principles might they glean from comparing multibillion-dollar sports conflicts that were handled masterfully with those that ended in disaster? And what strategies might they borrow from a wide variety of high-stakes business disputes and deadlocks that were overcome without flexing muscle or throwing money at the problem?

The premise of the book is simple: there is much to be learned from situations in which people negotiated the “impossible.” First, the stories themselves—from history, diplomacy, business, sports, and popular culture—are inherently interesting, and readers will learn about how people lived and fought and negotiated in times and places both near and distant from where we sit today. Second, the stories offer tangible lessons that can be applied by anyone who is dealing with his or her own conflict or deadlock, whether it is seemingly impossible or more ordinary. Throughout, I give examples of how the lessons could be applied in other domains—ranging from job offers, to business deals, to personal relationships, to negotiating with your children, to engaging with terrorists. Finally, if we were to strip this book of all its trappings, frameworks, and organizational structure, we would find that it is, at the core, a book about human beings trying their best to get along with each other in situations that are not always easy. My hope is that the book instills optimism and provides another lens through which the reader can begin to appreciate the sometimes puzzling, occasionally disappointing or even exasperating, yet often inspiring thing we call humanity.

RETHINKING “NEGOTIATION”

Before going any further, I will define negotiation as it is used in this book. In my experience, it is possible to think too narrowly about what negotiation is, what it entails, and when it is relevant—whereas I mean to use the word in its broadest possible sense. Too often, when people hear the word “negotiation,” they equate it with haggling or debating, or imagine people in suits hammering out a deal. They think of negotiation as something we do once in a while—or worse, as a daunting or unpleasant task that should be avoided if possible. We would benefit from thinking differently.

Having advised on multibillion-dollar deals, I can say with confidence that negotiation is not about dollars and cents. Having advised on how heads of state might manage peace processes that are on the verge of collapse, I can tell you that negotiation is not about lives lost or lives saved. Having advised on job negotiations and family disputes and strategic partnerships and cease-fires, I can assure you that negotiation is not about career trajectory, or managing emotions, or finding synergies, or stopping bullets.

In short, negotiation is not about any one currency. Negotiation, regardless of the context or the issues involved, is fundamentally about human interaction. However simple or complex the issues, however well-intentioned or malicious the parties, however familiar or unprecedented the challenges, the question we are always trying to answer in negotiation is this: How might we engage with other human beings in a way that leads to better understandings and agreements? It does not matter whether the agreement is to be written down, as in a contract or treaty, or whether its enforcement is to be trusted to newly established goodwill, redesigned incentives, improved coordination, or merely the hope that accompanies a shaking of hands. It does not matter whether the understanding is between individuals or organizations, ethnic groups or countries. Negotiation is always, fundamentally, about human interaction. Sometimes these interactions are easy. Other times, they are tougher. And then, of course, there are the negotiations that interest us most in this book—the seemingly impossible ones.

Negotiation, then, is the process by which two or more parties who perceive a difference in interests or perspective attempt to reach agreement.

The principles, strategies, and tactics that help us do so in extremely difficult situations are the focus of this book.

Deadlock and ugly conflicts

The book includes dozens of stories from many different contexts.3 In selecting the examples, I have focused on the kinds of problems that people often admit to facing in their own lives: deadlocks and ugly conflicts. Deadlock is a situation where people are making incompatible demands and neither side is willing to back down. We will look at situations where the deadlock is so severe that it threatens the entire deal or relationship, but we will also tie the lessons back to less extreme situations. A conflict is any situation in which people have competing interests or divergent perspectives. Ugly conflicts are those in which people are facing formidable obstacles to achieving agreement—for example, mistrust, animosity, complexity, or a protracted history of hostility. We will see examples of each of these throughout the book as we extract lessons for managing conflicts of all kinds.

HOW THE BOOK IS ORGANIZED

The stories and lessons in this book are organized across three sections, each emphasizing and exploring one of the three levers: framing, process, and empathy. Which one of these levers will be the key to solving your problem—or, whether you will need to use multiple levers—will depend on the situation. Alone, each of these is extremely effective. Together, they provide a comprehensive approach to negotiating the impossible.

• Part I focuses on the amazing potential of framing. Effective negotiators know that how you articulate or structure your proposals can be as important as what you are proposing.

• Part II focuses on the decisive role of process in determining outcomes. Negotiating the process astutely can be more important than bargaining hard on the substance of the deal.

• Part III focuses on the tremendous power of empathy. A dispassionate and methodical approach to understanding the real interests and perspective of all relevant players can help to resolve even the ugliest of conflicts.4

Of course, not all problems of human interaction will be solved quickly or easily. Many of the worst conflicts require tremendous effort, strategic perseverance, and fortuitous timing. But there are also times when what is most needed is something a bit different: the ability to control the frame, to shape the process, and to unearth possibilities where others see none.

With that—I hope you enjoy the stories. I hope you find the lessons to be of value. And I hope the book encourages you to see every problem of human interaction as an opportunity for achieving greater understanding and better agreements.

Bravo!
By Dolly Chugh
Another fantastic book by Deepak Malhotra. This book reminds us that negotiators are humans, using both real world examples (sports, entertainment, healthcare, technology, history, international relations, etc) and a few key principles. Having seen Malhotra teach (put this on your bucket list!), I especially appreciated the teaching tidbits he incorporated into the book. As someone who teaches negotiations to MBAs, I learned a lot!

Relevant, readable, applicable

Highly readable and applicable negotiating principles for all manner of interactions and conflicts though mostly for business. The author keeps the strategies and techniques interesting by framing them in the context of larger conflicts in which they were applicable.
