Review
“When three great minds like these collaborate, a prism is created through which a light of wisdom can shine in the darkest of places. A must-read for all people touched by this unfathomable dilemma.”
—Judge Michele Lowrance (ret), mediator and author of The Good Karma Divorce and Parental Alienation 911

“In each journey through parental alienation, it is easy to lose the way. What seems to be a clear and just path in navigating family court is not always reality. Amy J. L. Baker, Brian Ludmer, and J. Michael Bone have given alienated parents a comprehensive road map that allows them to make their journey through this highly emotional period with level heads and hearts. The authors’ work empowers readers and leaves them feeling revived, secure, and confident as they travel to their final destination: reunification with their children.”
—Jill Egizii, president of the Parental Alienation Awareness Organization, USA

“The High-Conflict Custody Battle is a joint effort by writers with complementary skills and expertise: Amy J. L. Baker, PhD, is a research psychologist who has studied child psychological abuse; J. Michael Bone, PhD, is a clinical and forensic psychologist; and Brian Ludmer, BComm, LLB, is an attorney whose practice focusses on high conflict family law. The three authors have created a book that is both scholarly and highly practical, which will be helpful for mothers and fathers who find themselves coping with a difficult, overly litigious marital separation or divorce. The book addresses in detail the personal and legal crises that frequently occur in high-conflict divorce, such as parental alienation; allegations of domestic violence and child sexual abuse; and undertaking a child custody evaluation. It is notable that the authors acknowledge that all the participants in these legal battles have both flaws and biases, so no one is expected to be perfect. Although this book is primarily intended for divorcing parents, it will also be good reading for mental health and legal professionals, including judges.”
—William Bernet, MD, professor emeritus in the department of psychiatry, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville, TN

“Having recently tried the most publicized parental alienation case to a successful conclusion, I highly recommend this book for parents coping with an alienating spouse. The authors have provided an effective guide to assist parents through difficult litigation. This book should be read by every targeted parent.”
—Jim Pritikin, fellow of The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers

He has served as a mental health expert, consultant, and advisor to the court on parental alienation cases around the United States, and maintains a consulting practice in Florida.

Good luck and remember
By Kimberly Miller
Invaluable advice. I was in a custody battle with my ex husband for nine years. Had a high priced lawyer and all, but got nowhere with the judge. This book helped me realize what proof the judge needed to make an informed custody decision. I now have full custody of my children and I owe it in part to this book. It finally helped me organize all my information and present it to the judge in a way she could understand. It also helped me realize that even thought I know my case through and through, the judge only knows what both parties present in the way of evidence because they have hundreds of cases. YOU need to present solid evidence and this book can help you do that. Good luck and remember, it is about the kids lives, not your wants!

It helps understand what are they doing and why, so you can manage the conflict better, and does have some advise on countermeasures.

Review
Mark Lowenthal s Intelligence: From Secrets to Policy is a marvelous guide to the discipline s concepts and theories, and it keeps getting better with each edition. It is nuanced and comprehensive without losing sight of the big picture that is, the key points that every scholar and practitioner must understand when it comes to the real world of strategic intelligence. Whether as an intelligence analyst, a manager, an overseer on Capitol Hill, or an outside scholar, Lowenthal has been there, done that. He brings a superb sense of realism and practicality into his book, while at the same time tapping into the most important scholarly research on the topic. Bravo! --Dr. Loch K. Johnson"

Lowenthal s Intelligence: From Secrets to Policy is a comprehensive text which reflects current events and new developments in the field. It is able to introduce difficult to understand concepts in ways that students are readily able to comprehend. --John Comiskey"

Intelligence: From Secrets to Policy is incredibly informative, timely, well-written, and easily accessible by students and professionals alike. Mark Lowenthal starts by providing a baseline for understanding the role that "intelligence" plays in the operation of a government and its interactions with other countries. He then provides historical context for the development of the U.S. intelligence community. From there, we get a deep look into the practice of intelligence and the broad spectrum of roles with the intelligence community, from protecting our secrets and obtaining the secrets of others. The use of intelligence in formulating policy is also an essential element discussed here and, in a "post-Snowden" era, Lowenthal's discussions of accountability, ethics, and reform are very timely and insightful. --Gary C. Kessler, Ph.D."

Review
"Seeing a 'Dummies' book about urban planning is actually a testament to the fact that the field of urban planning has arrived in the public consciousness. It's also clear that this is book is not at all for dummies. Written in every-day English, the book thoughtfully and engagingly covers topics from 'What is Urban Planning' (Chapter 1) to 'Urban Design' (Chapter 8) to 'Planning and Disasters' (Chapter 14)." - Planetizen's 10 best books in urban planning, design and development for 2013

"Urban Planning for Dummies - a new and slightly curious addition to the For Dummies series of instructional books. It's a pretty wonky subject to see in the straightforward and simplified style of this series, and raises the instantaneous question many of these books raise: who would actually want to read this?" - The Atlantic Cities

"Here's an unexpected find in the popular For Dummies series: Urban Planning for Dummies, by Jordan Yin, AICP.  The book includes the top-10 lists that are a feature of the series. There are 10 ideas for making your community a better place (e.g., 'pay attention to design details' and 'make room for nature'); 10 great cities with great plans (in the U.S., Savannah, Washington, New York, and Celebration, Florida); and 10 urban plans you can find online. - Planning Magazine

"The well-known 'Dummies' series may attract snickers, but the books are usually excellent primers about difficult subjects. Yin's book covers the basics of how cities and towns grow and change, how to plan for housing, transportation and land use, how to design greener and more sustainable communities, and how citizens can get involved." - David Beach, Green Cities Blue Lake Institute, Cleveland Museum of Natural History

Good introductory book
By Florida Family
I admit that I purchased this book for its cover. As a professional city planner, with 25+ years experience, I thought it would make an interesting talking point lying around in my office! However, upon reading through it, I was impressed by the range of topics that were included, and especially how clearly some concepts were defined. This would be a great book for a new Planning Commissioner or someone thinking about a career in Urban Planning. It is concise and well written.

Seeing Things as They Are: A Theory of Perception, by John R. Searle

This book provides a comprehensive account of the intentionality of perceptual experience. With special emphasis on vision Searle explains how the raw phenomenology of perception sets the content and the conditions of satisfaction of experience. The central question concerns the relation between the subjective conscious perceptual field and the objective perceptual field. Everything in the objective field is either perceived or can be perceived. Nothing in the subjective field is perceived nor can be perceived precisely because the events in the subjective field consist of the perceivings , whether veridical or not, of the events in the objective field.

Searle begins by criticizing the classical theories of perception and identifies a single fallacy, what he calls the Bad Argument, as the source of nearly all of the confusions in the history of the philosophy of perception. He next justifies the claim that perceptual experiences have presentational intentionality and shows how this justifies the direct realism of his account. In the central theoretical chapters, he shows how it is possible that the raw phenomenology must necessarily determine certain form of intentionality. Searle introduces, in detail, the distinction between different levels of perception from the basic level to the higher levels and shows the internal relation between the features of the experience and the states of affairs presented by the experience. The account applies not just to language possessing human beings but to infants and conscious animals. He also discusses how the account relates to certain traditional puzzles about spectrum inversion, color and size constancy and the brain-in-the-vat thought experiments. In the final chapters he explains and refutes Disjunctivist theories of perception, explains the role of unconscious perception, and concludes by discussing traditional problems of perception such as skepticism.

Review

"...[O]ffers a straightforward, realistic account of how one perceives objects and states of affairs... Highly recommended." --Choice

"Immensely refreshing." --The Weekly Standard

"Seeing Things As They Are is full of interesting ideas. It is engagingly written, and deals with big questions about the mind-world relations and the relation between the phenomenology and intentionality of perception. I recommned it to anyone interested in what makes perceptual contact with a mind-independent world possible."
-- The Philosophers's Magazine

"Searle's book is a wonderful addition to the philosophical discipline of perception, and a useful way for someone who is not well versed in the subject to receive and extensive overview of the historical arguments. The overarching thesis is a strong defense of Direct Realism that will inspire the reader to contemplate the ways they discern meaning through experience." -- Englewood Review of Books

... his new book Searle counters what he calls the Bad Argument that has ruined epistemology for three centuries
By michael fowler
In the first part of his new book Searle counters what he calls the Bad Argument that has ruined epistemology for three centuries, namely the idea that we don’t perceive the world directly but through an intermediary called variously sense data, representation, or even interface. His claim is that our senses present the actual world to us, and do not create a picture or representation that must be perceived in place of the real world that it somehow resembles.
He does this first by attacking the notion that consciousness is some nonphysical entity that can’t react with physical entities. Instead Searle holds that consciousness is a biological property of the mind and is caused by neurons in the brain, just as digestion is a property of the stomach and is caused by glands and enzymes. As such consciousness belongs to the physical world and ultimately reduces to the particles and fields of atomic physics. But Searle is not a microbiologist or brain scientist and does not tell us how consciousness emerges from the brain, only that it does. He is a philosopher and here is interested in how consciousness works in perception.
In claiming that vision presents the real word to us, Searle relies on theories of causation and intentionality. An object causes light to be reflected into our eyes, and the resulting visual experience is an intentional one, by which is meant that it seems to us to be the object out there in the real world. In other words, the visual experience has conditions of satisfaction, or requirements of being a certain way, which are that it presents a real object to us. As Searle puts it, we use the same words to describe our visual experience as to describe the object we’re looking at. The result is that our experience seems to be caused by the object we are looking at, and is a presentation of that object.
In a fascinating discussion on hallucination, Searle says that when we are hallucinating, our visual apparatus works exactly the same as when we are having a true or veridical perception, except the cause of the perception shifts from the world to the mind, and the object of the perception out in the world goes missing.
Searle thinks that everything we think or perceive gives rise to a special feeling of what it’s like to do or think something. This seems to be part of his concept of intentionality. But Searle says some odd things in this connection. If he is married to one of two identical twins, for example, or presented with a car identical to the one he drives, he seems to believe that the phenomenology or appearance of one of the twins will change once he recognizes which is his wife, and the same for his car once he realizes that he’s looking at his very own car. I don’t get that, since by stipulation the identical twins and cars can’t be distinguished by appearance. Yes, the intentionality will change, since his feelings and attitudes will enter into his consciousness, but why the phenomenology also? I don’t see that he needs to say that.
Still that is a handy belief to have when you are refuting the idea that computers are conscious, as Searle does. Obviously a computer like the ones we have now do not have subjective, qualitative feelings about the world or about their computational chores, and so can’t be conscious. Searle has other arguments against the consciousness of computers as well, and it is quite refreshing to read a thinker who doesn’t subscribe to the belief that the brain is a computer and the mind some sort of computer program. Such writers as Dennett, who do hold that view, simply eliminate consciousness rather than explain it. I’m with Searle all the way here.
Searle is quite expert in zeroing in on the logical flaws in the theories of consciousness of others, and does so with a deadpan humor that can be quite amusing. He goes through the Greats we read in college, Descartes, Berkeley, Hume and Kant, and shows how their theories of the mind or skepticism have impeded understanding of what really goes on in perception. In contrast to the writing style of Dennett, he attacks the subject of consciousness in perception head on and stays with it, rather than writing about everything under the sun in a circuitous and ultimately inaccurate approach. The prose is clear if the arguments are sometimes dense, and free of jargon. Also included are helpful pictures and diagrams. It’s enjoyable when Searle challenges those with a different view of perception to draw a diagram that better explains it than his.
I would have liked Searle to talk more about so-called hardwiring in the brain, particularly as it relates to such things as language acquisition. Searle’s position is that there is no unconscious rule in the mind unless in principle it could become conscious. I don’t know if the innate rules of language acquisition could become conscious. What would that mean in the case of a two-year old leaning to speak English? Chomsky’s idea of innate but unconscious rules seem to be a given in philosophy these days, and if Searle doesn’t buy it, and I gather he doesn’t, I’d like to read more about why. Does he question all of Chomsky? How does he better explain language acquisition?
Also Searle still leaves us with a kind of dualism. After explaining our centuries-old failure to solve the mind-body problem as set up by Descartes and others, where mind is something nonphysical that in principle can’t react casually with the physical world, he opts for a kind of materialism with two different ontologies, or types of existence. There is the first-person ontology of an individual’s private conscious events, and the third-person ontology of the objective world. But somehow both are the same kind of stuff reducible to atoms and forces. Well, it sounds right. The trick, and I think Searle pulls it off, is to present a coherent theory of perception without tripping up, to do it better than the rest, and to do it with humor and style.

A Good Introduction to Philosophy of Perception
By A.Luther
When it comes to making technical philosophical jargon easily understood, John Searle is one of the best. That is not to say that Searle dumbs things down for the audience, it's just that he is good at getting rid of all the hyperbole that often exists in academic philosophy. Searle opens his book with a critique of what he calls the "Bad Argument" in philosophy. The Bad Argument is that since we may have a perceptual experience of the world that is really a hallucination but is in fact indistinguishable from a veridical (accurate) perception then what both hallucinatory and veridical perception must have in common is the perception of "sense data." Searle contends that this is a huge philosophical mistake that many of the "great" western philosophers have made and has led to problems with what these philosophers can say about the ontologically objective world. Searle contends that what is missing is an understanding of the intentional nature of perception. That is, perception provides us with a direct presentation of the objective world unmediated by sense data because it is the nature of perception to be about the objective events in the world that cause our perceptions. In working out his argument Searle touches on the issue of consciousness, classic thought experiments in philosophy of mind such as the "brain in the vat" and he discusses the philosophical notion of disjunctivism in perception. Disjunctivism is the argument that veridical and hallucinatory perceptions are different because there is something phenomenally different in our experience of veridical perception versus hallucination. No fan of disjuncitivism, Searle argues that there is no difference in the subjective or phenomenal character of veridical perceptions and hallucination - no difference in what he calls their subjective ontology - but there is a difference in their intentional character. Namely, that while veridical percepts are about objects in the world, hallucinations are actually about nothing at all. On reading Searle I find myself partly in agreement with him but only up to a limited point. The biggest problem I have with Searle is his view that the brain "causes" consciousness and that subjective experience are created "in the head." I think this a big problem for his "Direct Realist" position of perception since it means that our perceptions cannot be unmediated as any brain activity relevant to consciousness must be instead mediated by sensory signals from our sensory receptors. Hence those internal brain dynamics relevant to consciousness do not have direct contact with the physical objects that we experience as the subjective contents of perception. Like most contemporary philosophers and scientists who study consciousness and brain, this leads Searle to believe that that subjective experience is a brain event. However, Searle, despite being adamant that consciousness is a natural product of the brain cannot say how the brain causes consciousness. In later chapters of the book Searle is critical of computational theories of mind, so we can rule out that the possibility that he thinks that consciousness is somehow a bi-product of information processing in the brain. This leaves one confused as to how Searle thinks the brain creates the subjective contents of our experience. I should also note that in discussing how relations between the world and subjective perceptions of it occur, he is dismissive of both resemblance theories - the notion that we perceive objects in the world accurately because our perceptions somehow resemble those objects - and causal theories that suggest we perceive objects in the world because our perceptions occur at the end of what Searle calls "a billiard ball" chain of causative events. While I agree with Searle that he is right to dismiss these explanations of how we perceive the world, Searle does not really replace it with anything else since the current neuroscience understanding of how the brain might perceive the world boils right down to "billiard ball" causation, or what Aristotle would have called efficient and material causation between brain and world. My gut feeling is that Searle is really a lot more sceptical about our capacity to scientifically understand the mind/consciousness then he lets on to his audience. I definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to come to grips with the problems in the philosophy of perception.

CUTTING THE GORDIAN KNOT
By Claudio Ferreira Costa
This is the best defence of direct realism that I've ever seen. The fallacy that Searle identifies in the literature on the problem of perception is fundamental, and he is right in saying that it was in a certain sense tragic, originating the whole traditions of representationalism and idealism. This deceptivelly easy to read book is a philosophical achievement. He knows how to cut the Gordian knot.

Politics of Latin America: The Power Game, by Harry E. Vanden, Gary Prevost

Now in its fifth edition, Politics of Latin America explores both the evolution and the current state of politics in Latin America. Distinguishing itself from more traditional works on the subject, this unique text demonstrates a nuanced sensitivity to the use and abuse of power and the importance of social conditions, gender, race, globalization, class, and political economy throughout Latin America.

The first part of the text features thematic chapters that outline the region's geographic setting, history, economics, society, gender, race, and religion, setting the stage for a more detailed analysis of the politics, democratization, political culture, political movements, and revolution in Latin America, along with U.S.-Latin American relations. The second part of the book consists of carefully constructed case studies of ten representative Latin American nations: Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia, Cuba, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. Each case study traces the historical and political development of key actors and institutions, analyzing contemporary power configurations.

Review

"This outstanding overview balances major comparative themes with selected Latin American case studies written by country experts. Analysis of the region's historical context, social structure (highlighting class, race, gender, religion and family), political economy, regime transitions, social/political movements, and global context make this an ideal text for undergraduate courses in Latin American politics, sociology, and history. Students will appreciate the accessible writing and updated tables and charts."--Richard Stahler-Sholk, Eastern Michigan University

"Politics of Latin America has many excellent features and is probably the single best hybrid of thematic and country approaches."--Philip Meeks, Creighton University

Left leaning bias.
By Mark Cole
well, in a nutshell I would have to say there is significant leftist bias in the overall book. There are some chapters that are balanced and instruct the student as to what happened with different perspectives as to 'why' something happened. But overall the authors / editors allowed tremendous bias to flow throughout. A general example is that Nicaragua was on track with financial arrangements with The Soviets, Czechoslovakia and Cuba. No mention whatsoever to the encroachment of communism and US efforts to stop communism. It conveys to a reader nothing of that side of the events that occurred. We see this in other text books as well from time to time depending on the topics. If you have a left leaning (maybe even far left leaning) perspective you'll see no problems with the book. The book does cover a lot of ground and accurately portrays the failures of Latin America countries in their continuous journey to democracy. Might mention competing theories as to why so many women are 'placed' to lead these countries over the years.

Time Served, by Julianna Keyes

Dean Barclay had nothing to do with my decision to flee my old life, but he is 100 percent of the reason I vowed to never look back.

I've never forgotten how it felt to follow Dean - dangerous, daring, determined - away from the crowd and climb into his beat-up old Trans Am. I was 16 and gloriously alive for the first time. When I felt his hand cover my leg and move upward, it was over. I was his. Forever.

Until I left. Him, my mom, and the trailer park. Without so much as a good-bye.

Now Dean's back, crashing uninvited into my carefully cultivated, neat little lawyerly life. Eight years behind bars have turned him rougher and bigger - and more sexually demanding than any man I've ever met. I can't deny him anything - and that just might end up costing me everything.

I thought this was great. You should buy it right now!

Okay, for calibration: I have a hard time finding contemporary romances I can finish. I love complex, real-feeling characters with intense chemistry and believable roadblocks to their happy ending. I dislike shallow/glossy characterization, misunderstandings/refusal to communicate as the driver of why people can't be together, characters who are too perfect and therefore boring, unnecessary billionaires, and those scenes in series romances where everything grinds to a halt so couples from other books can show you how perfect their relationship is.

My TL;DR: I devoured this book the same afternoon I bought it, and now I am having that "I must tell everyone on the internet about this book because it is just that good!" feeling.

Premise: Set in and around Chicago, TIME SERVED is the story of Rachel, a 27-year-old associate with a fancy law firm, who lives for her work and otherwise lives a small life. Rachel is currently a successful workaholic lawyer with a fancy apartment, a carefully-curated work wardrobe, and a career that's going places, but she hails from a white-trash trailer park in an exurb of Chicago, a place she abandoned in the middle of the night when a way for her to escape and go to college out of state suddenly became available. When she left, Rachel walked away from a lousy mother, a lousy community, and her then-boyfriend, Dean.

Ten years later, while trying to drum up clients for a class-action lawsuit, Rachel runs into Dean out of the blue. In the intervening decade, Dean has been to prison for robbery, gotten out, and gotten very big and very angry. Now he's out, and working in a warehouse/nursing his grudge against Rachel.

The book splits its time between Dean and Rachel's developing relationship, and Rachel's work on the class-action suit. I often find myself vaguely bored by books that involve a work subplot, but I found the work plot here to be really well-done: it's more about Rachel's relationships with the people she works with, and how she has been using academic and career success to distract herself from things she doesn't want to focus on (her empty life, her unclean break with her past). So it's both entertaining on its own, and it illustrates and complements her dynamic with Dean. (This is very smooth and well-done - I just mean to say that her work story is not filler, it's interesting and relevant.)

Rachel is a GREAT character. So often I (try to) read contemporary romance and the characters just drive me bananas, with their shallow, non-real behavior, their refusal to communicate, their refusals to either have good boundaries or understand their own motivations or extend compassion to the other main character. Rachel felt like a very real version of a certain kind of lady to me: she's driven and intense and ambitious, and she doesn't know how to give or accept trust - but all of those things felt very real and very likely to me given that she was a person who was essentially raised by wolves and who had the drive and the intensity to actually make it out. I just really liked Rachel, and really wanted her to find happiness both professionally and personally.

Dean is also great. Big, surly, emotionally broken, proud and stoic, doesn't like anyone, desperate to get Rachel out of his head, but also unable to shake loose from her. Dean felt like a very real version of a certain type of blue-collar guy to me. He isn't a man who thinks like a woman (you know these dudes in romance novels), he doesn't intuit magically what Rachel wants, he isn't great at communicating in general, he's really terrible at communicating about his feelings or asking clearly for what he wants, or talking honestly about what he fears. He has anger issues. He's a little scary. But he's strong and he's loyal. The book doesn't make light of his criminal past, and neither does Dean. And Dean seems torn about moving between social classes: the very loyalty that kept him hung up on Rachel for so long makes it hard for him to see a way where he can be a real partner to Rachel. That felt realistic and poignant to me.

The book really understands where Rachel and Dean come from, and how even if you escape that kind of background, maybe you feel like you never really fit in like the people who were born to something else. The whole book to be a really good portrait of these characters and their worlds. It made their struggles to be in relationship with each other without being mean feel real, and their eventual happy ending to feel like it comes on the heels of real and lasting change and growth for both of them.

I just thought this was great. Great characters, dialog, emotional dynamics, everything felt plausible and internally real. Pretty big emotional swings (I got a little misty several times) but the swings felt earned and real and grown-up, not based on misunderstandings or other easily-fixed nonsense. These were real people trying to find a way to be together even though they had a complex past and on paper did not look like a good bet for the present, let alone the future. Just really good, good enough that I immediately glommed the author's other books.

I'd highly recommend this book for fans of Cara McKenna, or anyone who likes excellent, real-feeling books about people who have intense chemistry and smexy bedroom times and an enjoyable number of roadblocks before they get to their happy ending.

So good! (Buy it already!)

Time Served
By Kimisan
I'd never read this author before this book, but it was on sale for $.99 and I'm always looking for new authors, so I gave it a try. I was not disappointed.

The basic plot is not unexpected. Rachel and Dean were girlfriend/boyfriend in high school. Right up until Rachel disappeared in the middle of the night. She'd received a scholarship and suddenly was given money by her mother who told her to pack up her stuff, go to college and never come back. She does that. She never explains to Dean. Three weeks later, Dean commits armed robbery with two of his friends.

So, 10 years later, Rachel is a lawyer in Chicago at a prestigious law firm and has just about everything she's worked toward. Dean is an ex-convict living in a town outside Chicago where Rachel is interviewing residents for a class action lawsuit her law firm is handling. Dean and Rachel run in to each other at a store/restaurant in the small town when Rachel is buying empanadas for her law partner, their driver and herself. Dean has a LOT of rage toward Rachel, but he's still very much attracted to her. Rachel is still attracted to Dean and she feels very guilty about how she left him.

They both grow quite a bit throughout the story. The things that happen are not unexpected and it's not as drama-filled as I expected, which was nice. It was refreshing to see an ex-convict character that actually earned his time by doing a very bad thing because he was greedy/lazy/made a very bad decision rather than an ex-convict who is made to be sympathetic by doing a very bad thing but for all the "right" reasons. Dean is not very nice to Rachel for a good bit of the book. It's obvious that he does care about her, but he is VERY angry at her for the hurt she caused him. Rachel feels very guilty about her previous treatment of Dean and she apologizes many times and tries to give him the closure he needs, but she is not a doormat.

This author's writing reminds me of Cara McKenna (that's a compliment, in my book).

Hot and cold.
By Tiffany (Read All the Romance)
I have mixed feelings about Time Served. Halfway in, I would've sworn it was a 5-star read, but the character development dropped off a bit in the second half, so that prevented me from loving the book more.

Rachel Moser grew up in a trailer park, though you'd never know it by looking at her. Now, she's a competent Chicago attorney working on a high-profile class action lawsuit. It's a long way from the trailer park, which she left abruptly years ago. She left behind her mess of a mother. She also left Dean Barclay.

Dean and Rachel were dating when she took off without even saying goodbye. Not long after Rachel's departure, Dean was arrested for armed robbery and sent to prison along with the other guys involved in the crime. Dean served eight years before being released.

When the story opens, Rachel and her best friend/fellow attorney are conducting interviews related to the lawsuit. During their lunch break, Rachel unexpectedly runs into Dean and the two awkwardly reconnect. Now an ex-con, Dean works in the warehouse of a grocery store and frequents a boxing gym when he needs to let off some steam. It's clear that Dean's still carrying an enormous chip on his shoulder--and why shouldn't he? Rachel left without explanation and didn't once visit him in prison. So it's understandable why he would still be angry and need closure.

The two reconnect sexually as well when it becomes obvious that they have even more of an attraction now than they did years ago. They're a bit older, certainly wiser, and their convoluted history only complicates their physical relationship.

Rachel and Dean both run hot and cold--at times pushing each other away, only to seek each other out, then repeat the cycle. Dean needs closure from the hurt Rachel inflicted, and Rachel feels she needs to atone in some way for the damage she caused. They're both living in their memories, in their own heads, and they each need to get out and live for now.

Rachel and Dean seem to communicate best when they're having sex, but the problem with that is they still need to work through their individual issues. Rachel thinks she knows what she wants out of life: job success, stability, and a comfortable existence. But is that all there is for her?

Dean isn't so clear on what he wants. He reconnects with Rachel thinking he'll use her and lose her, but he realizes that it's not that simple. He pushes her away, only to draw her back in over and over. Because of this, I had trouble warming up to Dean. Frankly, he's a big jerk to Rachel initially, but I think she puts up with him because she feels like she owes him that much. Over the course of the book, though, I really wanted to see Dean soften up and show his kinder side. We get the briefest glimpses of it, only to see him put on that hardened mask again.

There's also a scene where Dean reveals some pretty shocking feelings to Rachel, who's rightfully horrified. As a reader, I was troubled at first, until I reminded myself that there's a huge difference between feeling like you want to hurt someone and actually, intentionally hurting them. When I reconsidered this, I kind of understood where Dean was coming from.

As I mentioned, the relationship swings back and forth: they fight, they make up, they fight again. Making up usually involves quite a bit of sex, and eventually Rachel and Dean need to decide whether that's all they have, or if they could possibly have something more.

I really loved the epilogue and wish that Dean from the epilogue would have been more prominent in the second half of the story. Nevertheless, despite all my mixed feelings, I still enjoyed the book.
