Do Less, Get More: How to Work Smart and Live Life Your Way, by Shaa Wasmund

“When you stop trying to do so much, you get so much more done.”

According to Shaa Wasmund, “You can do anything...but you can’t do everything. At least not at the same time. Many (if not most) of the things that will create your best life are perfectly attainable when you are willing to stop doing what’s not important and start prioritizing what is.”

Our culture has made it a badge of honor to be stressed, frazzled, running on empty—but Wasmund is on a mission to change that. Her audiobook is for everyone who runs from task to task, trying to be all things to all people, never feeling like they have the time or energy to give anything their full attention. She shows that when we embrace a less is more attitude, we can appreciate all the good things we already have and find the courage to prune the nonessentials. And then we can find the space in which to pursue exciting new opportunities.

Often it’s fear that keeps us stuck in our patterns. If we’re super busy then no one can say we’re not working hard. But there’s another way that’s both more enjoyable and more productive, if only we can break those the patterns. Wasmund teaches us how to become experts in the things we’re truly passionate about, rather than mediocre jacks of all trades. Her productivity tools include some strange sounding ideas like using a digital sundown, eating frogs, and batch tasking. Above all, she can help us say NO to the wrong things, so we’ll have time to say YES to the things that really matter for our careers and personal lives.

CONCLUSION

INTRODUCTION

‘ Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple. ’

I’ve been known as the queen of multitasking for too long. Whether from a misguided sense of duty to ‘do everything’, a constant fear of ‘losing out’ or an innate need to be ‘in control’, I’ve tried to juggle more things than any sane person should attempt or want to do. My phone has been like an umbilical cord and email has ruled my life. Mindfulness was remembering to pick up my keys before I left the house.

Sound familiar? Have you ever found yourself checking your emails or texts while having dinner with your family or friends? Do you feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day, that you run around getting nowhere fast? Do you wish you could put what really matters first in your life, but struggle to figure out how?

It’s so easy to justify why we do the things we do, but when we take a closer look we begin to see and understand the true consequences of our constant ‘busyness’. Are we genuinely enjoying our lives, doing what we love and being with the people who matter? Or are we rushing from one task to the next, trying to be all things to all people, and not feeling like we have the time or energy to give anything or anyone the attention they deserve?

The comfort of being busy

Some time ago my world fell apart when my gorgeous, wonderful partner passed away. He wasn’t just my partner, he was my beautiful son’s dad, and he was an awesome dad. My coping mechanism was to occupy every minute of my time so that I would have none left to think. It helped me survive, but now I realize I let it possess me like an inner demon. I became trapped in a straitjacket of my own making; if my mind wandered I’d just pull the ties tighter with more responsibilities, more emails, projects, people, more, more, more . . .

And then my son said to me, ‘Mummy, you’re always busy.’ I looked back at him. It had taken the eyes of a child to show me what was happening. The light bulb went on. It was time for me to make some decisions about what was really important and start filtering out the noise to hear my own voice – and listen to what it was saying.

When I did that, I realized that the successful projects and relationships in my life – the ones I really connected with, the ones I really wanted – all had something in common: they worked because I gave them my attention at the right moments.

When I work with entrepreneurs and people starting up their own businesses, I always encourage them to identify the one thing they can do that day that will make the biggest difference. Not the five things or even the three things: the one thing.

Most people seem to believe they need to do more, when really they just need to do what matters. To filter out the distractions and focus on the things that make the difference between surviving and thriving, between playing catch-up and being in the lead.

To become world class at this, you have to give yourself a bit of time and space to let go, let the real you unfold. (Reading this book is perfect.) When you are thinking clearly, you can more easily discover what it is you really want, and then you need consciously to prioritize it; to discriminate between the things that help you grow and the things that set you back – or at least keep you standing still.

To make this a reality requires honest, deep thinking, and you must follow that with action. We all place limitations on ourselves, often subconsciously, and until you uncover them, face them and free yourself of them, you’ll be stuck on life’s hamster wheel.

It’s time to look your fears and excuses in the face and prepare to jump out of your comfort zone, to start taking control of your life and to forge time for yourself and the things that matter. Your destination is happiness, and you can enjoy every moment of the journey.

Why are you waiting to be truly happy?

According to recent research from the Royal Economic Society, most people’s lifetime happiness curve is U-shaped. Our happiness is high in our youth, starts to trail off by the time we are just twenty-five and doesn’t pick up again until we retire. Unsurprisingly, this research indicates that our happiest times are when our lives are simplest, and the pressures of expectation from work and family commitments are at their lowest. That leaves forty years in between – the period when we are considered to be in our mental and physical prime, but during which too many of us settle for being ‘crazy busy’ and just moderately happy. That’s scary. Do we really want to defer living life at its best until we retire?

Of course, this book isn’t a ‘how to find happiness’ manual, much though I’d like it to be. Sadly, there is no secret formula that will solve all life’s problems. The best we can do is help each other illuminate the dark corners. My aim is to provide a wake-up call to remind you that it’s possible to grab your own happiness and show you how to do it. This book is about living life to the fullest and not squandering it. It is for anyone who has something to change and the desire to do so. It’s particularly useful for those with short attention spans and tight schedules. People who want to know how, not just why.

I thought about calling this book How to Get More Out of Life, but it isn’t about ‘getting more stuff’. This book is about taking what you already have and making the most of it – and in order to do so you may need to let go of a few things in the process. It’s about squeezing every last drop out of life while you have the time to appreciate it. Getting the best from life is about digging down to the core of who you really are, what you really want and what makes you truly happy, then making the changes necessary to focus on those things.

It’s about reconnecting with the things that make you smile and your heart sing, the pursuits, the people and the work that give you lasting happiness, the dreams that linger unfulfilled, the adventures you’ve yet to set off on, the businesses you’ve always wanted to set up, the places you’ve wished you’d travelled to, the restaurants you’ve never eaten in, the lives you want to change, the house by the sea, the yoga at dawn, the book that’s never been written, the life you imagined. This isn’t a fairy tale, and neither is it wishful thinking. Many, if not most, of the things that will create your best life are perfectly attainable if you are willing to stop doing what’s not important and start prioritizing what is.

You can do anything . . . but you can’t do everything. At least not at the same time.

Relight your fire

This isn’t a book about time management either, but it will help you to prioritize how and where you invest your time to create a life you love.

I’m not going to suggest you sell everything you own and go backpacking around the world (although if that’s your dream, I’m certainly not going to advise against it). What I will teach you are practical ways to create change, now. It’s about appreciating the life you already have and making it better. We’re renovating here, not rebuilding.

Most of you reading this book already have a pretty decent life – you just might be so caught up in being busy you’ve forgotten what it looks like. You have a roof over your head, whether you rent or own; you go on holidays; perhaps you have kids and/or a partner; you definitely have friends and colleagues; you have a job or run your own business. Most of all, you have dreams.

This book is about how we resurrect those dreams and bring more of them to life, by spending less time doing the things we are conditioned to believe we ought to do and more time doing the things we love to do. It’s about relighting your fire and discovering your courage. It’s about knowing that you can’t please all of the people all of the time . . . and that’s OK.

ought: used to give advice, indicate duty or correctness; an expected state

There will be tough times, when you’re going to have to face up to your own culpability in holding yourself back (we all do it), but there will be plenty of eureka moments, too. Moments when you realize a few simple changes can make a big difference. That getting the best out of life is possible for everyone, not just a select few.

Common Law and English Jurisprudence 1760-1850, by Michael Lobban

Questioning accepted views of common law, this book attempts to clarify the nature of common-law practice and the way in which it was envisaged by its practitioners. It asserts that attempts--notably those by Blackstone and Bentham--to expound or criticize common law in essentially theoretical terms were mistaken, and examines the evolution and spread of judicial ideas which were grounded upon the work of moral and political philosophers. Covering important philosophical and political debates of the time and the development of legal theory over a period of 70 years, The Common Law and English Jurisprudence makes a valuable corrective contribution to our understanding of this critical period in English legal history.

"It is an important contribution to the history of legal theory in the common law world....Lobban's thesis is complex and highly original; he is persuasive in arguing for a wholesale revision in historical understanding of nineteenth-century legal evolution."--Journal of British Studies

Blackstone, Bentham, Austin and English Legal History
By Ronald H. Clark
With all the renewed attention being paid to William Blackstone and his commentaries, as reflected in the three recent books written or edited by Wilfrid Prest, it seemed like a good time to take another look at this fine study first published in 1991. The book covers the end of the 18th and half of the 19th century. The author focuses upon the deficiencies of the common law, the role of Blackstone's "Commentaries," Jeremy Bentham's criticisms of Blackstone and the common law, and an interesting synthesis of views employed by John Austin. The non-lawyer should not be reluctant to jump into the book as it is a work of legal history, not a legal text. While at points it can be a bit heavy going, the author is quite good at explaining the concepts and issues he is discussing in language the layman can understand.

The author tackles some very important issues in English legal history. Was the common law a system of rules, or remedies or what? What was the system of writs and did it help or hinder the common law from becoming an effective legal structure? Interestingly, from where did the common law derive its fundamental principles--eternal principles or pragmatic solutions? The author's chapter on Blackstone is quite effective, especially in explaining Blackstone's reliance upon an institutional structure in systematizing the common law. The chapter certainly affords a valuable perspective on what Blackstone accomplished and where he came up short. There are several chapters on writs and pleading and their role in common law development. With the exception of a few places, such as Virginia, complex common law pleading in America died out long ago, and so this chapter helps the reader to understand the key role it played.

The author's discussion of Bentham, his compaign to simplify the common law and procedure, and to place reliance upon codes, covers a lot of ground in a compact and efficient format. Bentham is a giant figure, but his writing is so extensive that it is unusual to find a compact, yet cogent, discussion of his ideas. The author also discusses the resulting debate of codification which the Benthamites lost, but did secure some of his other reforms. The author finishes up with a solid discussion of John Austin and what he was trying to accomplish: create a systematic view of legal concepts, with law being rules. The author sees Austin as combining elements from both Blackstone and Bentham as he fashions analytical jurisprudence. The final chapter looks at some specific areas of rules and remedies in 19th century legal development. The analysis is supported by ample footnotes (where they belong: at the base of each page) and a 17-page bibliography. We hear a lot about these giants of English jurisprudence--this book helps us begin the process of understanding their critical contributions.

Forrest Gump (Vintage Contemporaries), by Winston Groom

The modern classic that inspired the beloved movie starring Tom Hanks.

Six foot six, 242 pounds, and possessed of a scant IQ of 70, Forrest Gump is the lovable, surprisingly savvy hero of this classic comic tale. His early life may seem inauspicious, but when the University of Alabama’s football team drafts Forrest and makes him a star, it sets him on an unbelievable path that will transform him from Vietnam hero to world-class Ping-Pong player, from wrestler to entrepreneur. With a voice all his own, Forrest is telling all in a madcap romp through three decades of American history.

From Publishers Weekly
There is a joyously madcap feeling to the first half of this unusual novel, but then the absurdity gathers its own speed and begins to run dangerously amok. Groom's picaresque tale is told by an idiot, the Gump of the title, and follows his outrageous life from early stardom for Bear Bryant's Crimson Tide, through a tour in Vietnam and across the broad canvas of America during the '70s and '80s. Like most literary idiots, Forrest Gump is a lot smarter than the people he encounters. He is also no ordinary idiot. Instead, he is a mathematical idiot savant, capable of outperforming NASA's on-board computers, which is why Gump ends up on a space mission with an ape and the first woman astronauta mission that ends in the forests of New Guinea where Gump meets a Yale-tutored cannibal. All this takes place after Gump has met Lyndon Johnson and saved Chairman Mao from drowning, which is to say that this is a very broad satire. While there is much on-target humor here, Groom, author of Better Times Than These, has written better books than this.

From Library Journal
Forrest Gump provides social commentary in a light, humorous style. Gump's adventures range from shrimp farming and chess championships to space flight and capture by cannibals. Nixon, the military, Vietnam, college football, and other topics receive blunt and caustic comment from Gump. Throughout his experiences, Gump remains a likable fellow who views the world and notes his observations simply, straightforwardly, and truthfully. Author and narrator Groom uses inflections and intonations that capture Gump's character and personality. The recent feature film starring Academy AwardR winner Tom Hanks should help stir demand. This delightful and easy-to-listen-to audiobook is an appropriate addition to most collections.

This is one of the few times I have enjoyed the movie more than the book
By Amy M
This is one of the few times I have enjoyed the movie more than the book. I think everyone fell in love w/ Tom Hanks character and he did such a wonderful job (as usual). Even with that vision in my mind as I read the book, Forrest was not as lovable of a character. Being captured by the cannibals and then having the monkey as his companion for the rest of the story was just a bit too much even though I realize the story was fiction. I found myself laughing AT the story. The movie, while a bit of a stretch, was still done in a way that somehow made it believable...made the audience WANT to believe in the magic of the story. I was curious about the book so was still glad I read it but it was kind of disappointing. I think I'll pass on the sequel (Gump & Co.)

The movie is so much better
By Mark Altizer
I have a new-found respect for movie screenwriters after reading this book.I give director Robert Zemeckis and screenwriter Eric Roth huge credit for taking this halfway decent book and turning it into a fantastic movie. Groom's story is so full of far-out, unbelievable schlock that I have to believe it was written as a joke. I get it that the story is intended to be unbelievable and wacky, but still, the whole NASA astronaut section is just so over-the-top that it sounds like the fantasies of a ten-year old. I think that if I had read the book before I saw the movie, 1) I wouldn't have finished it, and 2) I would not have seen the movie.

No. Just no.
By Mrs Couchman
I am a ridiculous bookworm, and I read literally anything I can get my hands on. I only recently discovered that the movie was based on this novel, and as a huge Forrest Gump fan, I was very excited to read it.
For the first time ever, I can absolutely guarantee that I will never read this book again, nor will I be able to recommend it to a friend.
Usually, I'm upset when a movie adaptation changes the flow of the plot, omits certain scenes, or changes characters or their roles in the story. I can honestly say that if the movie had been any more like this novel, it would have been a terrible film.
First off, this novel is far-fetched to the point of being absolutely ridiculous. Forrest Gump getting coerced into a mission on a spaceship, which then crash-lands in New Guinea where he spends four years with a cannibalistic tribe lead by a Yale-educated man who plays chess? Forrest Gump becoming a professional wrestler who goes by the name The Dunce and wrestles matches in a diaper? Forrest Gump befriending a male orangutan named Sue who becomes his side-kick and proceeds to partake in laughably outlandish shenanigans, up to and including a foray on Rodeo Drive with a naked starlet from a movie Forrest is starring in? The plot of this novel reads like the unchecked ramblings of a compulsive liar having an identity crisis.
The characters in this novel are equally ridiculous to the point of not being at all likeable, namely Forrest himself. The Forrest Gump portrayed in this novel is obnoxious, lewd, boorish and vulgar in ways that are inexcusable even by his low IQ. Indeed, this novel stops just short of having Forrest do nothing at all but drool on himself and repeatedly run into walls while making "derrrrr" noises. The loveable, innocent, decent man portrayed in the film would be absolutely disgusted and annoyed with the novel character he is based on. Rather than the Forrest Gump we've all come to love, the novel version of him is truly a danger to himself and others, unable to function in even the simplest of settings and repeatedly making an ass out of himself. Lt. Dan and Bubba, on the other hand, have such a shallow character depth that you could probably rip out the pages that mention them at all and the story wouldn't lose anything except word count.
Please, for the love of God, don't bother reading this. It was a terrible, terrible book.
